The polyphonic organ solo sounds SOOOOOOO much better with a Hammond & a Leslie! Bravo & well done Mr. Ingle. You were one of my strongest & earliest mentors in music. You are dearly missed. RIP, man. You were so original.
This is an historic video.. how come I never seen it before? Thank you very much… I was fortunate enough to have seen them in Chicago in 1970, I was in high school at the time…. It was THE GO TO SONG, for a long time….
I must have heard this 5000 times by now. I wore out my original album as a kid. A man singing like a man. A drummer drumming like an animal... and the whole band... into it. No coreography, none needed. Just raw rock and roll delivered.
I saw Iron Butterfly and The Chamber Brothers at the Hollywood Palladium in 1980! Can you imagine how incredible it was hearing In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida and "Time" at the same show-front row!?

@@kathyneville9768 Kathy, what a great birthday! 5-10-20! We are very fortunate to have the internet now. We can see all the shows we went to, and the ones we missed- like Led Zeppelin at Madison Square Garden, 1973. Now that was a concert for all the Universe to enjoy. Aliens, light years away from us probably think the same thing! Come on- Jimmy Page, Stairway to Heaven, live? It just doesn't get any better than that- well, maybe Jimi live at Woodstock, August, 1969. We sure have had a great life. Cheers from sunny Mexico!

We were in the club that night.....just a small club which I can't remember the name. The band show up unannounced and played that song.....we didn't know it was going to be them until they were invited up to the stage.....we freaked. So long ago......LA/Pasadena area....can't remember which.....but it was a great night. Had it been announced prior to that night the place would have been jammed to the rafters. They brought their own guitars but if I remember right, which I might not, but I believed the drummer (Ron) used the house band's drum kit. From what we found out later they were getting ready to do a tour.....a lot of well known bands would do that prior to going on tour......just come to small clubs and do small sets. Great night. We were high as a kite.....great frame of mind to listen to this group.....loved it. Frankly I had no idea it was filmed or on UA-cam until tonight.
Got to see them perform this at their Austin Civic Center concert in 1970, on a barrel of Orange Sunshine. Words can't really describe the ecstatic spiritual event that it was. The concert was a Cosmic Church experience. We all processed down the isles slowly, reverently, in perfect step with the driving rhythm. Our minds and hearts immersed in spectacular lights and Love. Everyone in that hall was one with each other, one with the band and the band was one with us.
In human history it would be impossible to have such expanse of musical sounds & lyrics as we've had in the past... WOW, now 70 YEARS! Granted every genre has their followers, but in general, Rock is so vast and entertaining. _ _ _ I'm so blessed to have been born when it started. 😎👍
How I love this song from the Iron Butterfly, especially the longer version, it’s one of my favorites from them. I love the instrumental solos, and drums and drummer, lot of rhythm and resonance here. I’m glad I grew up in this era of music, from the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s rock n roll era, a time when music was fun and enjoyable to listen to, and especially to dance to, and which I did a lot of it, including live performances without all the technical crap with today’s music. It was more simple, natural to hear each instrument, than today’s music with the technological advances involved. I had many records from many artists/musicians then and I sure wish I had them now, lost them while moving to another town….they always helped chase the blues away. I’m 74, and still listen to many of these songs whenever I can find them. I thank you for sharing this, and I’m grateful to have found this one here with the longer version….thank you….👍❤️🥰
What a live performance!! I didn't even know this existed. This is what live music from that era and any era is all about!! This performance was filmed almost exactly fifty years ago (today is 3/20/21), when I was six years old. Little did I know. Even if a couple of these guys are no longer with us, long live the music of Iron Butterfly!!
Mike Pinera & Rhino Reinhardt (seen here in this video) were good guitarists & were in the group for Butterfly's 4th album, Metamorphosis. But it was Eric Brann that did the iconic guitar work for In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida. Brann left the band in late 1969 over creative differences. He was amazing!
Great band and they're gonna still be playing this in 2067. Whatever became of Erik Brahnn? He was a classically trained violinist. And Mike Pinera went on to play with April Lawton in Ramatam. Rhino went with the original singer of Deep Purple Rod Evans and formed Captain Beyond with Bobby Caldwell.
The most innovative, compelling and legendary drum solo in all of rock history. You could fill stadiums with people who were inspired by and swept away by Ron's epic studio version of this classic. Met him after the Houston show in 1994 and told him so in person. A classy gentleman.
If you never did LSD in the 60's you will never get the FULL EFFECT of this genre of music period, psychedelics takes it to a whole new level, long live Purple Microdot and Orange Double Barrel, thank you I.B. for the memories what a trip it was.
What impresses me about the drummer is the restraint he has !!! It's not what he plays but what he doesn't play and the way he keeps perfect time during the entire tune !!!!!!!! Being a drummer myself that is difficult to pull off especially for 22:40 !!!!!! Bravo !!!!!!!!!!
oh man!...sure us boomers just take all the hits now being all old blah blah blah....well hey kids u know wat else about us boomers?....we had THE GOOD SHIT....in all things....
Hah! I was in a band in high school & we played about 4 tunes from Iron Butterfly. The drummer picked up tickets for us to see them at the Filmore East in NYC. We made fun of the name of the opening act because it was similar to Iron Butterfly-iron is heavy, a butterfly is light, we thought it was a cover band or something! When "Led Zeppelin" took the stage, we freaked out. We had never heard anything like it. We had great seats, we enjoyed Iron Butterfly, but we had our minds blown away by that opening band.
loved the Doors since i was a pup back in the 60s. No one will ever write the powerful cryptic lyrics like lizard king. The 60s into very early 70s, best era of music ever!! More rock talent in that decade than ever, before or after!!
Takes me back to senior year in high school when I was obsessed with Iron Butterfly Grand Funk,, Queen.... movie “go ask Alice,” Beautiful memories thank you
OMG loved Grand Funk, just a shame they broke up the way they did, Mark has his side of the story and Mel & Don who tour as GFR currently have there side of the story. Mark I feel was the driving force of it, that boy could sing
Love love love Grand Funk. But without Mark in the band, no way I would see them now. Not even for free. Also Iron Butterfly was the bomb. I never get tired of listening to music from that era.
That drummer rocks- has the same sort of primal animal appeal as James Brown. Turned 70 on 4/16 & still jammin' to this eternal hit.. still have a copy of the original vinyl packed away.
Took me right back to Strawberry Hill, Boone's Farm, School friends and young servicemen, a bon fire, boombox, four finger baggie $10, pink and yellow papers, a guy in a felt hat with a guitar, laughter, dancing, peace and love.

I remember those colored papers, tho - weren't some like flavored or something? did you ever see Esmerelda papers? As a drummer, I can say for myself that you will never feel more naked than doing a long drum solo. This solo was sensational, well thought-out, with a plan of attack. You can do a long solo if you plan it. Doing it live, and keeping it under control, is difficult live, because you have adrenaline unlike what you have in the studio. I love this tune, and this solo. It was the first solo I ever tried at age 13...it wasn't as good...
Saw them live in Toronto in the 70’s at Massey Hall. You will never guess who opened for them and where booed off the stage ‘The Turtles’. How nuts. In a Gadda da Vida was the first long play rock single ( 17 min ). It was a great concert, they say I had a great time. So glad I could spend my youth listening to the best rock music ever. But you know what they say” if you remember the 6 p’s ,you weren’t there, and I have 15 years of grey haze that is but a vague memory of great sounds. Thanks, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Van Morrison, King Crimson, Grand Funk Railroad, Joe Cooker , The Doobie Brothers , Canned Heat and Jrthro Tull to menti on a few.
I was like 16, n I was just getting in to smoking weed, my friend uncle came up to us n asked have you ever heard of the group Iron butterfly, to our delight, we all laugh about it, cause we were into R&B bands, reminds u we were heavy weed smokers , n love our music, but he said try it , u will like it. So we went up to the smoke room, lit some is n drank some beer, put on In the Godda of Vida , an was completely blown away 💯🎶🎶🎶🎶 by them that day , we must’ve played that song aleast 3 times in a row, an I will never forget that beat n song I’m n my 60s n still remember that special day and moment, that changed the way I listen to different kinds of music, I thought at first it was satanic music at first, but as I listen to the words a changed my perspectives of the song and the music, absolutely fantastic sounds n musicians, watched this video n was blown away again 💯 thanks for the mind reboot 😊🎶🎶 long live Iron Butterfly 🦋
MAN I love the way those drums sound. And I love the groove he gets in during his solo. I think it's really hard to make a drum solo interesting and this guy certainly did that. Awesome video
In 72, at 16, I drive through L.A. en route to Mexico listening to this tune ... while most of my family was asleep. Thank God my inexperience driving didn’t result in a tragedy. Some things you never forget.
I went to hear these guy’s when I was 13yrs, they never stopped jammin’...... kinda long songs, acid music crowds having a blast...........what a memory for me.........
...loved this incarnation of Iron Butterfly. The musicianship is pure delight. From Ball, to Metamorphosis, the transition is an excellent study in how incorporating two guitarists could really extend the band's already expansive repertoire. This rendition is probably the best captured on film, in an intimate environment. I'm knocking 70 now, but my heart still beats to the steady rhythm of Ron Bushy's solo. When it ceases to do so, I would have lived a better life because of bands like Iron Butterfly. To my fellow soldiers in our town, and the freedom seeking ezy riders, rest easy in the garden of eden when the journey ends. Peace out.

Aye, truly incredible. Bought the album about 1977. I remember dancing to this on the lawn outside a friend's house. We rocked up and, fellow music freak he was, he was BLASTING it out. We started dancing and he looked out the window and saw us.

@lizzy rosario Yes to Mind Flowers!!! HP Lovecraft II also.
@@harveycan5820 for that matter Wooden Ships, Plastic Fantastic Lover, and Peace Frog aren't exactly psychedelic.
Loved Iron Butterfly as a kid, finally got to see them at Cahuilla casino near Temecula in 2002 or 3. Awesome to see these gray hairs rock!
Completely Agree. First time I ever found this live version, quality is great.
In '69 I was 16. Originally from Tucson AZ but living in LA. Steppenwolf, The Doors, and of course......Iron Butterfly ruled the airwaves! My God...........heaven!
The polyphonic organ solo sounds SOOOOOOO much better with a Hammond & a Leslie! Bravo & well done Mr. Ingle. You were one of my strongest & earliest mentors in music. You are dearly missed. RIP, man. You were so original.
I’m 71 years old. It’s still kicks ass just like it was yesterday because new music today. Totally sucks.
I'm 65 and it's still the best song ever
Thank you so much for this song. It changed our young lives back then and opened the rock hiway for us. Peace!!!
Back when a record company would let you fill the whole 20+ minute side of an LP (that’s a vinyl for you youngsters) with 1 song. 😎👍
This is an historic video.. how come I never seen it before? Thank you very much…
I was fortunate enough to have seen them in Chicago in 1970, I was in high school at the time…. It was THE GO TO SONG, for a long time….
I must have heard this 5000 times by now. I wore out my original album as a kid. A man singing like a man. A drummer drumming like an animal... and the whole band... into it. No coreography, none needed. Just raw rock and roll delivered.
I’m 71 and still have the album!!
When music was real and raw my friends it touch’s your soul I’m 66 and will listen to these great musicians until I’m out of here.
I saw Iron Butterfly and The Chamber Brothers at the Hollywood Palladium in 1980! Can you imagine how incredible it was hearing In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida and "Time" at the same show-front row!?
Love imagining now. Time, my favorite of all. Saw Iron Butterfly in Philadelphia 1971. I turned 73 May 10 2020. Still listening to the best music ever.

Kathy, what a great birthday!
I also loved The Chamber Brothers
Gregorio Palofuego: That reminds me of when I saw the premiers of 2001: Space Odyssey in 1968 and Easy Rider in 1969 @ Cinema 19 in Philly doing acid. Still my 2 favorite movies.

Pearl Jam - Black
Yea those pop up sessions were the best ever.
Tend to think maybe the (bus) driver did most of the filming. Who knows.
Hey if ya see this post...
Check out DOVADYS. I swear the deceased musicians are in this kids soul , he sure acts like them, body language!
Insane version ! The drumming was nuts. WOW. Worth every minute .
Still have my “45 rpm”. This is real music, no flash, no autotune, no tech, just pure unadulterated music/talent
Back in the day when you needed talent to make good music
While i was in Vietnam no band in a USO show could leave the stage without playing this song.
Had the opportunity of a lifetime to see Iron Butterfly perform with Steppinwolf ...WoW , WOW , W O W
The most innovative, compelling and legendary drum solo in all of rock history. You could fill stadiums with people who were inspired by and swept away by Ron's epic studio version of this classic. Met him after the Houston show in 1994 and told him so in person. A classy gentleman.
he definitely was a jazz drummer lol
Doug Ingle's father was a church organist, and you can hear the influence of classical pipe organ in parts of this song.
Sina and other international musicians did one of the best covers of this song I've ever heard!
Farout! ❤
If you never did LSD in the 60's you will never get the FULL EFFECT of this genre of music period, psychedelics takes it to a whole new level, long live Purple Microdot and Orange Double Barrel, thank you I.B. for the memories what a trip it was.
Don't for get white lightning...
Yep! Don't need it now but loved it then. 77 years and still kicking. Those were the daze! FAR OUT MAN! ✌
I never took drugs, but liked the music though. RIP Doug Ingle May 24th 2024
What impresses me about the drummer is the restraint he has !!! It's not what he plays but what he doesn't play and the way he keeps perfect time during the entire tune !!!!!!!! Being a drummer myself that is difficult to pull off especially for 22:40 !!!!!! Bravo !!!!!!!!!!
hummm..pass the angel dust...
Absolutely the best rock anthem ever written! And of course the "Drum Solo" is over the top!
This drum solo is not fast, not Tommy Lee flipping over, and yet it's the best i've ever heard, It's like crack on the brain.
Every respectable High School drum line is required to perform this flawlessly
LOL. Omg
I remember playing this album at our teen parties we had every weekend when I was in junior high! I had very cool parents! ❤
ME ALSO 😅
In our era, we had the best music of all time.
oh man!...sure us boomers just take all the hits now being all old blah blah blah....well hey kids u know wat else about us boomers?....we had THE GOOD SHIT....in all things....
I was 9 years old when this song was released. I didn't hear it for another 3 years but when I did it bowled me over. Love it!
We had some great musicians and music back then. We'll never see the likes again.
Iron butterfly and the doors were two great bands and their music is being accepted by young people every day
loved the Doors since i was a pup back in the 60s. No one will ever write the powerful cryptic lyrics like lizard king. The 60s into very early 70s, best era of music ever!! More rock talent in that decade than ever, before or after!!
Love them also, among a lat others
because they were thought to inspire metal along with led zeppelin

Takes me back to senior year in high school when I was obsessed with Iron Butterfly Grand Funk,, Queen.... movie “go ask Alice,” Beautiful memories thank you
Grand Funk Railroad. LOL. I have not thought of that band in YEARS. lovin it. I remember that Go As Alice movie about drugs and teenagers, right?
OMG loved Grand Funk, just a shame they broke up the way they did, Mark has his side of the story and Mel & Don who tour as GFR currently have there side of the story. Mark I feel was the driving force of it, that boy could sing
Nothing beats Grand Funk! They are one of the greatest rock bands in my opinion, rock on brother!
Love love love Grand Funk. But without Mark in the band, no way I would see them now. Not even for free. Also Iron Butterfly was the bomb. I never get tired of listening to music from that era.
The Sweet too as they hugely influenced Queen
That drummer rocks- has the same sort of primal animal appeal as James Brown. Turned 70 on 4/16 & still jammin' to this eternal hit.. still have a copy of the original vinyl packed away.
The best drum solo ever, then comes wipe out. I am 71 and still loves this song.

Kim Perrin lol. Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill. I swear everybody has forgotten about it - I keep trying to bring it up and no one remembers - but yes, balmy summer nights at the park before the police figured out what we were really up to lol :) four finger bag - shit, it took that much to get high off it compared to today's skunkweed. lol. You were lucky to see them
Welcome home
My friend had just gotten a stereo system and I sat in front it listening to this ..no weed needed
But you know what they say” if you remember the 6 p’s ,you weren’t there, and I have 15 years of grey haze that is but a vague memory of
great sounds. Thanks, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Van Morrison, King Crimson, Grand Funk Railroad, Joe Cooker , The Doobie Brothers , Canned Heat and Jrthro Tull to menti on a few.
De aquella época en la que de verdad había músicos y realizan obras maestras
My first concert was Iron Butterfly with Blues Image ("Ride Captain, Ride") at the old Seattle Center Arena. It was a great one. RIP
Holy fuck, this is the very best version I've ever heard!

It never ceases to amaze me to see just how many legendary songs come about by accident.
So long, Doug Ingle at 78. The last living member of the classic lineup.
MAN I love the way those drums sound. And I love the groove he gets in during his solo. I think it's really hard to make a drum solo interesting and this guy certainly did that. Awesome video
He took the bottoms out of his floor toms to make that sound
The solo of each instrument is great and it all melds together to sheer beauty.
Usually when bands would improvise and jam, it'd bore me to tears. But, this band somehow got me asking for more.
Damn this is such a great rendition of this song, the best I have heard.
Pinera and Rhino resurrected this band! Thanks guys!
Amen...
Easy to forget that these guys were players!
...loved this incarnation of Iron Butterfly. Peace out.

I always thought Doug Ingle is highly underrated as a singer. He's like an expressive primal semi-operatic poto-Dio. "Hehyah! Hoo! Hohhh-rat!" Nobody else sounds like that.

Arthur Brown likewise: in fact when I first heard IAGDV I thought it was him! Jack Bruce also had a similar set of pipes
That's not Doug Ingle singing on this video. Might be Mike Pinera...
So Mike Pinera is playing the organ then? Don't think so.

don't really understand your premise, l'm a musician and play odd music, from jazz to classical and some rock. but when l heard this tune for the first time, it blew my fucking mind, this tune has depth in originality, it's complex and above everything else, that sound! that church organ sound with the low voice of the lead singer and of course the amazing drum solo...l could go on and on. but l'll leave it at that.
agreed, the church organ sound, to heavy metal . . . .back then, no one did such things, and then, back then, a lot of experiments were tried, and many worked
Doug Ingle played the organ in church.
