grand funk's body of work is amazing, and a great live band as this shows. they were massively popular who sold out shea stadium faster than the beatles. and they're still the only real "funk and hard rock" band. their first "live album" is a classic and literally started the live rock album genre. grand funk railroad is by far the most glaring omission by the hall of shame, it delegitimizes what they pretend to stand for, putting people like johnny cash, madonna, and dolly parton in is ridiculous, you can tell all they want is big names and the money that comes with it.
The sheer power of this performance is beyond amazing! Marks blistering guitar playing, Mel’s thunderous bass line and the pounding of Don on the drums is epic on the grandest scale!!! Long Live Their Music!!!
Just so you know ... Caught in the act ( live of course is great ) .... Craig Frost was on Keyboards making him the 4 th member of Grand Funk Railroad !!!!

What I admired about Mark Farner was that he was one of the very few guitar players worldwide that never had to have his eyes on his fingers and guitar while playing. Mark the extraordinaire guitarist doing his this thing. Millions of guitar player's past, present and future have to ALWAYS keep their eyes on the guitar and their fingers while they play. Mark Farner Was Grand Funk Railroad With A Style All His Own.
There are many guitarist that don't look at their hands so wrong ! But Mark and Grand Funk was one of the down and dirty rock bands that stood their ground they was bad ass !!! Once Mark left them Grand Funk didn't exist 🎵🎶🎸👍
Sure, my buddy, I could notice that deed when catching the video, great, magnificent, admirable, noticeable, remarkable AND one of a kind, but I think you should say " doing this His thing" instead of what you say. Anyway, that's a super observation I' ve never seen in a guitar player, AND you are right. Congrats.

How lucky were you! I was only 10 years old in 1970, but I wish I had been born 5-10 years earlier because I tell you what, I would have gone to these live concerts and Woodstock!
By far favorite band. I had all the 8 tracks. I would be blasting GFR through those Cricket Box speakers that sat in the backseat of my 1970 two tone baby blue Toyota Celica. Thank you Mark Farner for the memories. God Bless you Brother.
OMG!!! If we just had a time machine 2 go back to these awesome times in rock history. GFR is one of the best bands ever..& SO deserving of being inducted into the R&R HofF..if any band ever was! ....
I still can't believe that GFR isn't in the so called, Hall of Fame. Take the majority of the bands that are in and put them and Grand Funk in a venue and you'll see which one fills up the fastest. GFR sold out faster than anybody. Get your crap together Rock & Roll HOF.
Wow! What a performance! I was only 15 years old when this concert was held. I missed a lot of good concerts because of my age. But I'm glad I found this song live. This has got to be the best live performance of Inside Looking Out. I wonder what the policemen in the background thought of this concert. Wish I were there during that period of time. Great performance guys. Grand Funk Railroad Rocks!
I was 14 when I seen Grand Funk at Cobo hall in Detroit. My ears rang for 3 days. My first concert was the Animals I was only 10. By the time I was 15 I'd seen tons of concerts including Jimi when I was 13:) Peace
It's actually the Live Album audio version overdubbed on the video performance. Nonetheless, it shows what they were about in concert and the size of the crowd and the reaction are brilliant
I purchased this album 2nd hand in the UK in 1973 at the age of 10 and I still consider it to be an absolute treasure of my collection. The ultimate power trio of all time. I actually have a German pressing of it as well!
I would have to disagree on at least one point. Santana played at Woodstock in the 60's I saw Santana two years ago, and he hasn't missed a note in 50 years. It was just like hearing a studio album all over again. CARLOS SANTANA, YOU STILL ROCK.
so true brother. Pure sound and performance. No electronics. No laser lights. Just full blown get down and work. Bands in those days were exhausted after a show> Farner's shirt would've been soaked ... if he'd worn one
The best live band of all times, grand funk brought to their live shows pure energy of their music, the fans of the band understood it better than the critics, janis joplin came to their shows, jimi hendrix came once when the band of noel reading opened for grand funk and frank zappa loved them because they were down to earth people and good musicians so he produced for them the album from 1976, thanks for sharing this historic film.
Without a doubt, one of the best bands ever. During the 60's and 70's I saw Led Zeppelin, Steppenwolf, Jimi Hendrix, CCR, Earth Wind & Fire, Chicago, Santana, Three Dog Night and the best of the best of those times. Grand Funk Railroad was as good or better than the bands I named and saw in person. Truly a SHAME this Great band is not in the Hall Of Fame.
They AREN'T in the Hall of Fame? That is a mistake. How can rock and roll development even start to exclude Grand Funk Railroad? They were pioneers with their sounds and music. I listened to them when I was in the 7th grade with the headphones my brother had. I STILL listen, rock, and roll back into time...the early 70's, for example...wow. pure rock and roll
The Hall of Fame personnel suck there should be people running it that understand rock and roll from the gut the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame now is a farce a fucking truck of shit that is crock of shit and that's about it man
I remember buying this album in 1973 when I was 11. It was the first album I truly LOVED. It never got old. I still play it from time to time even in my 60's. Just raw in your face pure rock. I had no idea there was actual footage of this album. What a hoot! Man those were the days. GFR was my first real love and I had every one of their albums. Unfortunately, they were pressured to get a more pop sound in the mid 70's. In my opinion, this is them at their peak. They fricking rocked it.
This is killer.. I used to watch these guys on my bike 3 houses down as a kid as they jammed on the porch here in flint Michigan. Craig frost the keyboard player was our neighbor. He was a real nice guy and now plays with bob segar…
Great Story! I grew up in Detroit loving these guys. Seen them at the Olympia in Detroit on the Closer to Home Tour. Ten tier A Mail Order and went with a bunch of Highwaymen and Zulu's. Not the kind of people you want to Scalp 🤓
Saw them in 1971... They were my FAVE band of all!! Insane musical prowess all the way around 🌹🌹🌹 Wore out TWO vinyl copies of this album before college
Not only that the beatles had to hire young girls from a girls school to scream at the airport , but they were a good band but hardly the great rock band they pushed . On the other hand GFR smoked so much in the early 70s , they were rated the #1 live rock band in the world , cause the people have spoke.
Awesome! All three of them. The bassist, Mel Schacher could make that bass growl at ya! He is the first one I had seen that could bring that heavy funk, rock sound playing with a guitar pick! Music never dies here. Legendary!👌👌
@@jefferyfunk6819 I was a little younger. I was listening to them when I was 13 years old. I know Mel had to be 19 or barely 20. He was the youngest of the three. He had talent and still got it!
@@jefferyfunk6819 Well at 19 Teen I was learning how to destroy Soviet Tanks in West Germany. But I seen Grand Funk Railroad when they did a show in Frankfurt in 74!
Con su álbum "We Are an American Band" todas sus piezas increíbles incluyendo los punteos de Mark en "Walk like a man", "The Railroad".
Mark farmer, and gran Funk, one of My favoritesperformerd, i remember the first times i Heard footstomping mudic, black licorice, increíble music, me farmer so charismatic, im so sad when i realize that this music Will never be Made again!!
A few years ago I met a girl in Mexico and this song came on. I was shocked that she knew every word - we both sang along to it. A magical moment. Thank God somebody UA-camd the 70s!
And The James Gang (with Joe Walsh) also gave Zeppelin a serious run for their money on tour. Peter Grant wasn't happy about other bands stealing Zep's thunder.
Grand Funk Railroad is a Real Grand Funk Railroad. I love your music since many time ago and GOD loves you more. Do not 4get HIM. Take care and be safer at home. Blessings plus greetings !
Mark Farner is a beast of a front-man 😎🎸 A bad night for GFR is 110% .....the greatest live band ever ! They sound so good everytime ! Ask Led Zeppelin's manager.... GFR opened for Led Zeppelin and they were bringing down the house as usual and he pulled the plug so they wouldn't upstage Led Zeppelin...... Sorry he should've pulled before they hit the stage ✌😎 Also GFR sold out Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles and stopped the British invasion ! Eat that mop top heads 😉
Totally Agree. Many people don't that. But that what. Peter Grant knew that when GFR tooked the stage on tour with Zeppelin ( 1969 or 1970). They got smoked out by an epic song like this. Classic Timepiece from way back
That incident happened at the Olympia Stadium in Detroit Michigan...Peter Grant picked Terry Knight up by his throat and ordered him to get GFR off the stage for having too much "crowd control". Look it up...the truth is out there.
@@MrWhoevr Yep and his greatest work was as Joe Walsh , that shit was stellar . My god man Grand Funk had 2 killer vocalists , one of THE greatest rock bass players . One song does not make The James Gang the pinnacle of power trio .
If Grand funk is not in the Rock and roll Hall of Fame something is wrong
That's because Jann Wenner is corrupt so the hall of shame is also.
They aren't because they are not that good.

My man Mark walks up, plugs in, and brings the pain...he just oozes charisma and talent.. a real showman!
GFR is one of the best bands ever..& SO deserving of being inducted into the R&R HofF..if any band ever was! ....
They actually have a song called "Time Machine" - Debut album- great song !!

The Best concert in my life
How can this great band not be in the Rock-N-Roll hall of fame, just don’t understand
The biggest selling and most influential band of the early 70s. RRHF is lame. Kiss(biggest in the late 70s) isn't in it either.

So damn good, every time!!!

Mark Farner still sounds great so many decades later.
This may just be the single greatest rock @ roll song ever 😘🙏💜✌
It’s Rock/Funk Fusion. Teens and Black folks where onto them while uppity types pooh poohed them and unfortunately still do .
Many bands can't sound the same live as in the studio. These guys could really play.
No one can sound the same live as in studio xD
You missed my point, which is many bands can't play at all without the help available in a studio
Deep purple was another one. Led Zeppelin not so much.
I would have to disagree on at least one point. Santana played at Woodstock in the 60's I saw Santana two years ago, and he hasn't missed a note in 50 years. It was just like hearing a studio album all over again. CARLOS SANTANA, YOU STILL ROCK.

One great band for sure! I still listen to them! I also love TNUC! Great drum solo! Don Brewer!
The hall of fame is a JOKE!!! They will put kayne west in before Grand Funk!!

Raw energy, as real as it gets
I'm from Peru we really missed Gran funk touring my country.
They fricking rocked it.
filmed at Crosley Field in Cincinnati OH, same tour 1970, loved seeing the concert goers rushing the stage at the beginning, no stopping them.
I cannot even describe the feeling when listening GFR - Inside looking out
bass solo in this song is something out of space.

Con su álbum "We Are an American Band" todas sus piezas increíbles incluyendo los punteos de Mark en "Walk like a man", "The Railroad".

The only band ever kicked off of Led Zeppelin's tour as an opener, for being better received than the headliner. Mark, Don, & Mel Rock & Roll Icons!
And The James Gang (with Joe Walsh) also gave Zeppelin a serious run for their money on tour. Peter Grant wasn't happy about other bands stealing Zep's thunder.
And axed from the rest of the tour dates zeppelin manager was thinking of putting them on
wonder what year that was. I think my mom saw them in '77 in Chicago.
