    I am one of those disgruntled pet store employees, animal advocate, and a reptile owner.
    It is a struggle for me, mentally and morally. But I just try to provide the best care for those animals and educate buyers on PROPER care. Not care guide care.
    From one Elle to another, Thank you for touching on this!

    I spent about $400 on things that were recommended for my bearded dragon from pets Mart. Then I did my own research like I should have done in the beginning instead of trusting everyone at PetSmart. I started watching your UA-cam channel and others and then speaking to a couple vets and I had to get an all new set up for my bearded dragon because literally everything was wrong and he was sick, not eating and then a little bit of stool he did pass was not right. I'm so grateful that I found your channel and that I talked with many other educated people so I could correct the mistake and now Greg are bearded dragon is eating so much and I can tell he's much happier!! So thank you!!!

      Awww I'm so sorry you had to go through that. But I'm happy he's doing well now! I had to do the same thing with Zsasz - got everything and it was all wrong, then had to essentially start over once I started doing research. Zsasz is now almost 8 years old.
      Also, I love that his name is Greg - my favorite pet dinosaur in the game Ark was named Gregory haha 🥰

      I did the same. At this point I have nothing left that came with the $300 I spent on a set up (sale). It either wasn't sufficient, dangerous, has broken, or was impractical. My girl came with parasites my vet said was usual with pets that come from stores like that. If I had followed Pet Smart's advice she'd probably haven't made it her first year of life. They really told me she only needed something like 6 mealworms or 10 crickets a week as a hatchling. 🤦‍♀️

I honestly thought their word was gold since their job is to give you good advice and help set you up for the pets they are selling

    Hey Elle! I totally agree with you 100% absolutely BUT when I’m in big chain stores and I see these animals in such poor sad conditions it just crushes my heart to walk out and leave them there because of the compassion we have for these animals. I’m a tarantula owner and those babies are set up so poorly, I got tears in my eyes one time. It’s just a subject that you ask yourself ‘what in the world do I do?’ 😢 Anyway, much love to you! ❤️

    My beardie eggs just hatched. So adorable. These guys were bred with homes mostly lined up before we incubated them. If possible always great to get them from another herper. We’re not sending them out until they’re at least 2 months, even though they’re going to competent homes.

      @@worthwhilereptiles6238 It took us some fiddling with our incubator once we got it. We lost a clutch by trusting the sensors that came on it. I run a 501c3 rescue in Virginia (Central Virginia Reptile Rescue). We had over 80 surrender requests from 10/1-10/9. Most of the rescues are swamped with animals. Many of our animals are coming originally from chain pet stores, but a lot of them are also coming from people who bought them from breeders. I had some pretty notably bred expensive animals come through my doors that were very healthy, the owner just didn't have the time, was moving, etc, etc. While I cannot guarantee what the animals' future health looks like, they are given vet care while with us, and we know what their temperament is like since we interact with them frequently, so finding the right pet for your situation can be easier. Also, we have a flat $50 adoption fee for all of our animals unless they need special care, doesn't matter if the animal is a special morph or not, we just want the animals in good homes. So, check out the rescues, you really never know what they have to offer.

    • @chibicricket
      @chibicricket 8 місяців тому

      The biggest problem we are seeing right now are impulse bought animals from Petco/Petsmart, mostly bearded dragons, they only stay in the home for 6 months to a year before we are contacted to take them. Or the expos, I usually expect a ton of calls the month following the local reptile expo.

  • @HeartsScales
    @HeartsScales 9 місяців тому

    I used to work at a big chain pet store in my early twenties, and from my experience staff definitely lacks a lot of knowledge on even basic animal care, especially when it comes to exotics. Some staff may have their own personal experience with animal care to draw upon, but pet care training is either not provided at all, or such a small, barebones training is provided that they are basically given just enough information to keep the animals at the store alive until they are purchased.
    Many people who work at pet stores love animals, are passionate about their well-being, but regrettably still lack knowledge on reptile husbandry, avian care, aquaculture, and even canine and feline best practices (such as how to discern high quality foods from poor quality foods). The information they do receive is most often provided by the company itself or reps from the companies they sell products for, and of course there is a big conflict of interest in that regard.
    So I agree with Elle that we absolutely should not be harassing or bothering pet store workers for any reason, but if you notice a local pet store is taking poor care of an animal, let the manager know. Reach out to HQ. Write a letter. Make a video and share it. But focus on the source of the issue, because it's not the pet-loving folks working on the floor who make decisions like where to get their reptiles from. Great video as always, Elle! Love from afar!

    I recently discovered Reddit. I am on r/Herpatology, r/snakes, r/turtles, r/whats this snake and r/ what snake is this. Everyone who finds themselves with a surprise pet and not sure how to care for it I have been referring your channel for tips and tricks. I find your videos educational and entertaining. Some people "find" their pets in the wild and most times they are told to put the animal back where it was found. In some cases, the found animal is an invasive species and the animal has to be killed or kept as a pet. I feel so bad that innocent animals are being killed. To date I've seen Cuban tree frogs and Iguanas being labeled as invasive. I don't know if this is something you would want to do a video on or not. Sorry for the long post!

    Thank you for this video. It's so important for people to understand that buying a sick animal might feel like a good deed at the time, but it just makes space for another animal to get the same poor treatment. Buy from a private breeder or, even better, rescue an animal that has been surrendered. Snake Discovery's recent video where they were rehoming surrendered animals, and their mentions of getting a dozen or more surrenders just about every day, was heartbreaking. I hope more UA-camrs will address the topic of rescuing and adopting.

    I almost bought my bearded dragon from a breeder best decision. Rhaegal is just the cutest bearded dragon my 1st leatherback. I just now finished making his enclosure bioactive. The moment his feet stepped on the soil he just tasted dirt 🤦🏾‍♀. My next reptile will be a leopard gecko and I already have a breeder in mind already. I saw that video with Alex calling the store that was a lot of work.

    I actually don't know where my bearded dragon came from. I only know the person who gave it to me. My daughters boyfriend gave me my bearded dragon( luckily she was already an adult at a year old) anyway I got the biggest enclosure (which at the time you and everyone else were recommending 40 gallon terrariums) and set it up as best I could with what the kit had and gradually changed it to yours and Adam's recommendations. I then when I got the money increased the size to a 4ftx2ftx2ft enclosure. I then used a lot of spray foam paint grout and styrofoam insulation from Lowe's. I also made climbing ledges from tile and dowel rods. It really turned out nice. Anyway my point is I got my bearded dragon handed over to me from an individual who wanted me to take her and care for her because he knew I would research her species and give her a good home. I was really lucky she was not ill and is thriving but she is still a really finicky eater. She is also a really chill bearded dragon. Extremely handleable.

    I have bought many reptiles in my life. A few from breeders, but most from pets Mart. When I was a child we had a local pet store in the mall I would buy from. I would say 99 percent of the pets I bought in pet stores were healthy and they lived their lives. I currently have a sassy and spunky bearded dragon I bought from pets marts in Marquette Michigan. The workers were very helpful. They urged me to go with a bigger tank without sand. They pointed me to the proper heating and proper lights. I knew all of this because I did my research. Two animals I bought from breeders were both sick. Turns out the breeders were local but they were breeding mills. They were investigated and shut down.
    It is sad that animals are born and raised in a mill. Have you guys seen how the vast majority of our meat and eggs are produced. Full grown live stalk raised in pens where they can’t even turn around.
    So what’s the answer here. Even if every body here stops going to a pet store to buy an animals the amount of people buying pets will always keep these breeding mills alive
    I think there needs to be regulation forcing certain standards be put in place to ensure animals bought are pet stores and born in places of safety and places where they will grow healthy. This in turn will raise the cost of the animal.

I bought and set up everything so that when I brought him home he would be as comfortable as possible. I still do a lot of research. I have 6 of them now and want to get into breading them. Whatever you do do not impulse buy and reptile or any animal for that matter before you do your research. It will make everything so much easier.

    May I ask an off topic question....
    If I put a heat mat in my new wooden ball python enclosure but put a piece of tempered glass over it?
    And is there such a thing as a duo temp probe for both the heat mat and the ceramic heat source...
    Wishing you continued health...I'm new to your channel and have been catching up..

      I know you asked Elle but I want to share my recent experience with a similar scenario. I had a heat mat under a glass enclosure that was on a wooden shelf. It was attached to a thermostat, so it's not like it was heating uncontrollably all the time. When I recently replaced that enclosure the heat mat was badly scorched and warped. The insulation around the electrical wires was starting to pull away. I will never use an under-tank heat mat again.

As soon as you buy one thinking youre going to rescue a new one will be there in a week. The cycle repeats. Buy your supplies from them and your food from them. Don't buy animals from them. There are so many breeders that you can buy from. You should see how bad of shape these animals are when they come in from the mills. Never been a fan of petsmart and petco, so many people who buy pets from them have no idea on how to take care of them, especially pets like hamsters and Guinea Pigs who are often victims of impulse buys from people who treat them like toys as opposed to living animals. I’ll always support my local reptile shops, especially since Petsmart and petco has banned live rodent feeders and the people who work there very likely aren’t reptile experts like the owners of local shops.
