DON'T BUY PETS FROM CHAIN PET STORES

- Hi guys! I feel like this is a very important video, specifically for beginners to the trade, as not everyone knows this stuff. And if anything, I want to try to encourage people to BUY LOCAL. Also, I think it's perfectly fine to buy pet supplies from these stores, just not live animals (unless it's an adoption event, that's different).
Just to reiterate:
I'm definitely not saying that all of this is the case for all chain pet stores. My local PetSmart does a great job with animal care/knowledgeable employees. They also adopt out cats from local shelters as opposed to selling them from mills.
Please don't blame the employees. Most of the time it's not their fault. Please don't go and yell at/harass pet store employees.
Unfortunately, even if you are buying a pet to "rescue" it, you're still encouraging the pet stores to continue to buy from reptile mills. Corporate offices only see numbers, they don't care that you only bought it because it was sick.
A quick google search will bring back so many results for everything I covered, and it will also bring back some disturbing reptile mill pictures. I did not include these images, but feel free to take a look if you're curious.
ALSO, I said in the video that bearded dragons lose their toes/tails from being nipped. I didn't mean that this is the only way, it can also be from bad sheds not being paid attention to, among other things.
A few places where you can buy reptiles (Please research these yourself to see if you feel they're good options. Also, know that these are by no means your only options):
Local/family owned pet stores in your area! Often times, these kinds of stores buy local/directly from breeders.
Reptile Expos - repticon.com will show you when Repticon will be in your area.
Local Breeders - you can connect with these via local reptile shows or local reptile facebook groups
Adopt an animal who's being rehomed from Craigslist! Just keep in mind that there are a lot of animals on there who aren't in the best condition. If adopting becomes rescuing, there will be vet bills, but these animals need homes, too!

I have purchased from undergroundreptiles.com as well. After watching a few videos on their UA-cam, I thought they seemed like a great company. My fire skink arrived happy and healthy (and still is); however, a few viewers told me about their bad reputation, and after doing some research online, they might not be the best choice. It seems a lot of animals from them are DOA or very sick. So while I personally don't have any bad experience with them, there are a large number of people who have.

Great Video Elle, sadly not too many people are aware of what happens behind closed doors at (not all, but a pretty big number of them) chain Pet Stores and I am always grateful when people like you bring it to the attention of you're followers. My parents worked as Humane Officers for many many years, and while their work did not revolve around Reptiles, they have seen a thing or two when doing undercover Pet Store jobs. Reptiles and small Fuzzy animals (rabbits, hamsters, mice) being euthanized very inhumanely (being bagged up and hit off the wall/countertops, or just thrown in the freezer while still 100% aware of what is happening to them) It really is horrible, and no matter how hard it is for people to come to realization that there might be some REALLY horrible things going on in the back of their local Petco/Petsmart, they need to consider it, and maybe think about finding a new source for Pet Supplies to support. If you ever decide to do a part 2 to this video I am sure that one of my parents would really love to contribute some information/details for you that they experienced. Great video!!! Could not say enough on this topic! Personally i was only a big supporter of the reptile world then events happen where i got left with a dragon baby & a few tarantula slings! Haha yea imagine my surprise! But i couldn't just ditch them even thou i was the level b4 beginner 😰 so study study study. Absolutely will NOT support or give business to Petco/PetSmart! If they wanna be a business targeting pets thats fine, sell the food, tanks, toys etc. Don't sell the animals!!
This video only got 100x better with your humbleness(hope thats right) met alot of cocky/arrogant breeders that unfortunately instead of educating they seem to have the opposite effect & make you not wanna ask anything simply cuz they make you feel stupid "how do you not know that?" So HUGE thank you once again.

I agree, we all were beginners at some point, so the "how do you not know this?" attitude is always irritating haha.
@@ellesreptiles haha YES! Had a tennant up & leave so i discovered the enclosures on a desk in a empty room. I'm like "uhh y'all were NOT listed on his residents list" haha no labels, names, dates, NADA! Soo i actually got lucky & was attending a reptile expo that weekend i took ALL of them with me there & explained best i could w/o looking dumb to breeders i could find to see if we could first get list of what they needed asap then fig out what kind of T's i was dealing with? Haha still have my beardie Red she's officially 1yr old now & lost 1 of the T's but still have the other 2. Putting me at 5 T's today! Haha some things just are meant to be.

How do I let people know about the sick animals Pet Co sells?My precious Guinea Pig that I adopted there has cost me almost $1000 dollars ( yea, effn no kidding ) on Vet bills since last Oct. 1 st 2021! 😡, when I adopted him.. They sell unhealthy animals for profit.My sweet baby will be OK I pray, but he should not be having these health issues as I do my homework and am an experienced pet handler professionally and am an animal communicater. I take really good care of him. He is active and loves me and gets the best of hygiene and food and bedding and cleanliness etc. It’s just so sad and heartbreaking for me to deal with his health issues. Do Vets REALLY have to charge the average person ( not a millionaire ) so much money to just do minor things for my Piggie? I don’t get it.

I got my ball python from a pet chain store earlier this week. I know I shouldnt give them business but I felt like had to save this little guy since I have experience. But I asked if they had sexed it and they said "were not gonna tell you a gender because we cant be sure but if you check in 6 months and theres 2 bumps on the snakes anal area then it's a boy. I couldn't help but to laugh
