when they said this would hurt all of the people who knew anything about animals they were 100% right
As an environmental scientist who loves animals, I can confirm that this video is killing me, Pat.
I can't tell you how many times before, during, and after filming we were like "people are going to be SO MAD ABOUT THIS"
@@polygon Honestly you guys did pretty well though! You knew birds had hollow bones and many (but not all) knew what the Amazon River was. Also, I love imagining a tiny, cat-sized tapir gingerly traipsing through the forest as opposed to the big tank-like fellas that exist in real life.
As someone who does not live in the US, Liberia or Myanmar, the non-metric units are also killing me.
I swear I felt physical pain when you guys were doing the Tapir XD
@@EricAurumSkagg As someone that lives in the US, it kills me that we don't use the metric system like everyone else.
As a European this video is very funny to watch not because you know nothing about animals but because the numbers you are saying mean nothing to me
What gets me about Americans is they don't even commit properly to the imperial system.
If you're going to choose to measure things like you're in a fantasy novel, don't pretend like you're above using "stone" as a unit of weight.
Everything made way more sense when they were using iphones and subway sandwiches as units of measurement 😂
Yeah that’s a shame the game doesn’t include standard units as well 🤨
@@pegarange funny, I thought you were serious for a second 😄
apparently the other side of the board is in standard units of measurement
symone saying “clayton, search largest frog” like he’s a siri or alexa is top tier- but clayton actually knowing something about the frogs without even being asked is even better
clayton's blink-and-you'll-miss it "yeah" caption for pat's "is there a difference between a marsh and a bog?" after casually revealing that he is a Knower of Frogs is what keeps me coming back for more Overboard every time
The number of creative pronunciations of 'archipelago' is what's doing it for me.
i was fully expecting Polygon not to know what animals are, but the fact that none of them seem to know what a foot is has thoroughly killed me.
54 % of american have a literacy level of less than a 6th grader. 21% of americans are illiterate. These people know more than most of their peers.
1. Simone estimated the Red Howler monkey to be about the size of a Siamang, a species of gibbon native to Southeast Asia and known for their loud whooping vocalizations. At the largest zoo in the PNW (which Simone probably grew up visiting), they don't have howler monkeys, but they *do* have an enclosure of siamangs, which young visitors often colloquially refer to as "howler monkeys". I'm not saying that the seeds for her blunder had been planted since childhood, but it's /possible/.
2. You know this is a Very Old Game when they name one of the African regions "Rhodesia".
That, "Far East," and "Indochina" are... choices.
You'd think, but it's only from 2008! That makes "Rhodesia" still being there even weirder.
... The Woodland Park Zoo isn't it
Loved those siamangs almost as much as I loved explaining that they weren't howler monkeys to people. I believe they do have some actual howler monkeys too now though.
As someone who has actually witnessed a tapir with their own actual eyes, the dramatic irony of that round was fantastic; I was just sitting there like "y'all are not ready for this truth"
same! tapirs were always my favorite animals at the zoo, so hearing them talk about them like they were cat-sized was absolutely wild. like, those guys are bear-sized!
Stay tuned to learn which employee of Vox Media has never heard of the Amazon River.
oh my god i can't wait. i have a guess, but i cannot be confident
That's Amazon'!
And which employee knows how long a foot is.
okay i was right but i didn't want to say it
That was the quickest I'd ever gone from being attracted to a woman to being unattracted to her.
Comparing animals to the size of Pat's cat is very good, especially when the animal in question turns out not to be cat-sized. Also glad to know I wasn't the only 90s kid who was disproportionately worried about being attacked by piranhas.
The Polygon Tina (Tiktokus Mariospaghettus) grows up to six phones tall and is found everywhere on Earth (land *and* water) except for the Amazon River and/or all other rivers & lakes
that latin name lolus maximus
Y'know, I prefer animal rights over animal wrongs...
bad news michael
@@polygon Oh, deer.
Cannot believe they did not invite Brennan "I read animal fact cards under the lunch table as a kid" Lee Mulligan back to Overboard for this.
Exactly. He would have been far too good at it.
Looks like a fun game! EDIT: apparently the other side of the board is in standard units of measurement 🤗
When I heard the panther chameleon was only in one spot, I immediately assumed it had to be an isolated island biome like new zealand or madagascar. Whether this actually how animals worked or a lucky guess, I cannot say
As someone who lives in Australia, arguably the biggest isolated biome, this is absolutely how it works. We don't let you bring fruit over on planes because it might have bug eggs that could literally destroy our whole ecosystem
A mythology monster hunting version of this could be fun for kids in that awkward phase where they've temporarily aged out of thinking animals are cool.
If you were to spoooky up the map, change the weight, length, and tail length scales to something like how old the monster is, how dangerous it is, and what its weakness is, then I'd say you'd have a fun older kids game on your hands.
I was literally JUST thinking "gee when will the next overboard happen"
manifest!
I'm getting my master's degree in fisheries and wildlife science so this is going on our grad student game night roster IMMEDIATELY
not even half way through watching yet but already can tell this vid is gonna slot itself in the Top 3 Simone and Pat Dynamics of All Time for sure. the lack of usual chaos really does a lot to showcase excellent Shared Custody (of the Brain Cell) Power Struggle moments in a way that is truly art to me
This video is an exemple of "americans will use anything to measure but the metric system".
"Cat" is a perfectly valid unit of measurement, I support Patrick.
"how long is a foot?"
"This arm"
The ending was brutal, I was like "Oh, this is cool, I'm going to get it", and then Pat just destroys my joy.
I hope one of you makes a video on the Amazon Trail games? It would be informative, nostalgic, and a good redemption arc for the employee who had never heard of the Amazon River.
Talking about the "Nemo rule" at the start then not mentioning "I'm a piranha, they live in the am-a-zon" quote from the film was maddening to me.
Also, Eli's Butterfree tattoo looks awesome
"This week, we are playing ~fAuNa~"
tina was in the lead so they couldn’t divulge the truth of the amazon river, tina i’m sorry they sabotaged you like that
I love this so much, but it is so weird seeing only Pat and Simone left from when this series started
I miss Jenna and BDG, in general on Polygon, but especially in Overboard 😢
I was really surprised Polygon would partner with the Dodo because of their really problematic promotion of behaviors with animals and views in line with PETA (who has authorship to post articles on their site), but then I saw- the Dodo is owned by Vox, who also owns Polygon. Yeesh
I knew the dodo had videos with animals that shouldn't be pets & unsafe animal interaction but i didn't know they were also tied to peta, i am somehow more disappointed than I already was
Who would have thought that mega corporations own small groups of media that were initially made content independent from each other.
@@ameliaporto I know. It's just sad to see :/
the first animal after the explanation of how to guess an animal's habitat being a lionfish which is SUPER INVASIVE and they CANNOT GET RID OF IT is hilarious
Lionfish were my favourite fish as a child, so knowing I used to know all of those facts was truly something.
okay are they saying arch-a-pull-AH-go on purpose or do they not know
i think they really dont know 😨😨
as a wildlife biologist can confirm this video was equal parts delightful and infuriating
Simone is so quick with the jokes in this one, she's da best
After round 1, I realized this wasn't going to take into account where these species are invasive.
I, like Simone, was also fully convinced of Big Monkey. you are valid and seen
stellar Clayton visual bits in this one and I also really enjoyed the guests!
lastly, Frog.
Pat! Marshes and bogs are distinct types of wetlands! Marshes are dominated by herbaceous plants, rather than woody plants (like a swamp) or peat-forming plants (like bogs or fens)! Bogs are full of peat, and are fed primarily by rainwater and are therefore acidic and nutrient-poor environments, unlike fens which are fed primarily by ground water and exhibit a wider range of water qualities!
how to remember the difference:
*you can marshal a bog* _but you can't boggle a marsh_
Huh. The way this game works reminds me of "America" which unsurprisingly is by the same designer.
Except that game has countless different trivia topics, just all American.
When I played with my mom, we first played one round with trivia about pie. When we went to the next round, another topic, my mom was relieved and said "Oh, I thought this was a trivia game about pie!" and I said "No, it's many topics - they wouldn't make this game and just quiz you on the same topic over and over . . . " so now I'm seeing this game Fauna and my eyes are darting to the camera and back.
Can't blame Simone. Nice, candylike colors, stomach rumbling... Sometimes *anything* may prompt a (derailing) train of thought straight into "eat the thing".
honestly surprised it took her that long to get there, I know _my_ first, or sometimes second, thought when befriending a new type of board game piece is *put it in your mooooooooooouth*
v fun game, wish i could buy it! also always love an overboard video.
but also please tell me the mispronunciations of archipelago were A Joke And On Purpose.
Wow, this game of Fauna Florad me!
hey now.
@@polygon Hey now. Don't dream it's over?
Interesting fact about the red lionfish, while they are indeed native to the Indo-Pacific oceans, you can find them as an invasive species in the Bahamas, East Coast US, and even the eastern Mediterranean! They wreak havoc on aquatic flora outside of their native habitat, and they can get really out of control with no predators, and strip an entire area of seafloor clean of plant life! However, it's super easy to get a license to scuba spearfish them (at least in the Bahamas), and you can get some tasty fish while helping the local ecosystem!
Fun piranha fact: contrary to popular belief, piranhas only eat dead flesh! So if you stick your foot into the Amazon River basin, you won’t pull back a little skeleton nubbin :)
Bold of you to assume they could tell the difference with me
Pat refers to tapirs as "Cat sized"
me, someone who's local zoo has many tapirs and interacts with them in close quarters on the reg: oh... oh no.
"😯🧐😳 ... thats a really good frog. thats like.. a /classic/ frog." "*..ᴿᴵᴮᴮᴵᵀ..*"
(42:29 - 42:35)
the only honest and real and Correct and True responses anyone could ever have upon seeing this frog. i feel so represented
oh my god 44:24 - 44:36 too. Simone you are the realest mfer alive frfr
Me, a wildlife biologist that loves Overboard: oh boy I bet this will be great and not drive me crazy at all! oh. oh no.
Kind of fucked up that the map has an area named Rhodesia.
Also "Indochina"
babe wake up the polygon people are doing funny things to animals
YES PAT! Brazil was mentioned!
How to summon brazilians with a single guess.
@@ameliaporto sim
Incredible guests! Great video for a pretty hard game to get. Thanks, Polygon!
measuring things in subway footlongs and iphones is the most usa thing polygon has ever done i believe
One of my favorite board games!! I’m so excited you all played this!!
Simone calling Crazy Frog her friend...
Simone, do you consider Crazy Frog to be clown-coded?
I ADORE Simone's laugh
The largest living frog is the goliath frog. It measures up to 32cm/12.6in long and weighs up to 3.25kg/7.2lbs
Clayton, please bring the tape measure I'm sure you own to work and just film it. Easiest hour of content ever.
Obviously the Lion fish lives in space in Captain Picard's office.
So sad this game isn't in print anymore. It looks very fun. Thank you for sharing it with us.
how do NONE of you know how long a foot is
education
@@polygon Is that also why none of you can pronounce archipelago
@@polygon and the reason for your lack of geography knowlegde
I believe the pronunciation of archipelago in this is a pop culture reference
@@relzyn5545 ah, then it is i who am the ignorant
I love to watch you all play board games! I hope you will give Blood on the Clocktower a try soon! It seems like such a perfect game for your group :D
It is pretty funny how they got people from a news-site about animals with dubious credibility at best and showed how bad they are at knowing animals
I’ve wanted to buy this game for so long and got so excited when I saw this pop up with the hopes it was back in print 😢
I'm just going to go ahead and pretend that Mario stole Tina's entire Amazon knowledge.
Does this game come in metric?
"Is there a lake in Amazon Basin?" God bless Tina.
Everything I know about the lionfish is from that one episode of New Girl
I can see this being a great game for, like, being an activity for middle schoolers in an interpretive center at a zoo or nature center.
frogs.
The thing I enjoy most as a metric system user is watching you guys ALSO have no idea how to estimate imperial units
The editor is so underrated. At 44:10- oh I already knew about the Goliath frog fr
Oh my god Tina using her phone that's presumably 6 inches to guess feet lmao
Also thanks for shouting out my home state Tasmania
Ooh, this is great! I want this game!
Also very funny that the map has "great Britain" and also "all of Western Europe" as two places of equal size
Also California (one state) and Canada (a huge country). Also, really weird that Canada was like horseshoe shaped and included places as different as Vancouver Island, the arctic circle, and the Great Lakes.
And Ireland is included in Great Britain for some reason, probably too small otherwise
@@Non-binaryCup too small and not sufficiently distinct in terms of fauna, I'd say
The obvious (maybe not to a non-Irish person though) solution is to label them "Britain and Ireland"
But even :shudder: "The British Isles" is better than just "GB"
this is such a good crew and a good game
Collective himbo energy
This game looks delightful, why did you tell me it's out of print?
It's Spreadsheet: The Game! All the fun of filling out a lengthy form, combined with the thrills of a committee meeting!
The Goliath frog is the largest frog, it's the size of a dinner plate and weighs over 3 kilos. :)
Dolphins truly are the great apes of the sea
The game just got a new edition in France few months ago so it will certainly got a reprint in english also :)
OOOOH!
Ooh, I'm early! Love these boardgames :)
Interesting they didn't include the location they are invasive in for the lion fish (it's definitely for the best not includeing)
And this is why you should use the metric system
37:07 Simone, HR wants a word with you
You guys should play Exploding Kittens!
That’s one hell of a pull, love the designer but haven’t played this one yet
nice green background gang, Friedmann Friese would approve
But now I wanna play it!!!! I love animal facts!
This animal is 2 wigs, one pig and 1/4 of a playstation3 long
I recently re-investigated where lionfish's habitats were now (since they're invasive) because they're a big fear of mine, despite loving the ocean, and it full freaked me out their habitat is so big now
audibly went "oh, honey..." when Pat put down the 20-40lb for the Tapir
The better fauna is Haken's album
Wait how old is this game? Cause one of the parts of Africa is called Rhodesia!? xD
2008, we cringed hard at that as well.
It's also got "Indochina"
32:50 Totally missed the opportunity to make a sea monkey joke ;p
That group wince at “Faũna” 🥴
"Quick, get some more people in to replace all the ones Vox Media has fired!"
Kinda weird to have a region called Rhodesia on the map in your cute animal trivia game...
oh the geography of the game is a disaster
but to be fair, geographical divisions are very much a minefield (if not always literally)
@@MiseFreisin I mean literally, calling a subregion of Africa after an apartheid colonial state that only existed for about 50 years is pretty loaded. They could go for Zimbabwe if they wanted that region to be separate so badly. Indochina is iffy too, but I guess some people still call it that. But using Rhodesia is like labeling the Arabian peninsula Transjordan, or calling Sri Lanka Ceylon. Like most people don’t know these names at all, and the ones who use them are immediately sus
Finally, another thing where close counts.
YESSSSSSS OVERBOARD!!!!!!!
lion fish in the caribbean shouldve counted theyre invasive in florida according to some guy who hunts them on tiktok
Would love a version of this, but with Pokémon
The height/weight scale would be insane though
