- Reviewing the Sony Xperia 1 V after using it as my full time phone, including a real life camera test, gaming performance, battery life and beyond. The Sony Xperia 1 V is a big improvement vs the Mark IV, offering a proper point and shoot photo experience, cooler running and general upgrades. But is it the best phone for you in 2023, over the Samsung S23 Ultra, iPhone 14 Pro etc?
If you want a smartphone camera that can boost your pics to make them look stunning with zero effort, the Sony Xperia 1 V isn't your best choice. I found that Galaxy S23 family was easier to use for good looking photos, but this phone offers an impressive DSLR style experience. And the auto mode is much improved, dealing with trickier conditions quite happily.
The Sony Xperia 1 V is also much improved vs the Mark IV when it comes to performance. No overheating issues, unless you try using it non-stop in scorching sunshine, plus a fantastic gaming mode to give you the edge. Battery life is also good, as long as you aren't constantly whipping out the Xperia 1 V to use that camera.
So are you tempted by this Sony smartphone? It'll hit the UK in June for £1299.

Thanks for checking out my Sony Xperia 1 V review! Are you tempted to lay down some mega-quids on this clever flagship? Let us know your feelings below!
nice tan btw lol :D
Hell yeh! Can't wait to upgrade from my Xperia XZ Premium now that the main camera sensor has been upgraded from 12MP
I'd love to! There's only one teeeny, slight, ickle problem..... ££££

Raising a glass to you, Uncle Spurt, as the only tech reviewer not wetting himself over Apple's shenanigans this week. Some of us haven't joined the iCult.
Ha, I did wee a little bit, when they announced the price of them goggles...
But.. but... MULTIPLE CLOCK WIDGETS!!!!
@@TechSpurt The appleinati will forego food and shelter to afford them.
@@TechSpurt it's nor for the average joe tbh.

I'll be having this on launch day. Nothing else like it and I appreciate Sony doing something different and sticking to their guns.
I just got mine last week. It's beautiful
Thank Christ for o2 switch up!! Hope you managed to get yours sorted out mate! Wonder what the contract price will be on this bad boy on day 1...
@@MJ-85 Right! I did get it sorted so I'm swapping my 1 IV for it. Exclusive green colour on O2 as well 😁
@@GroundedTech Nice one mate! too will give it a go i think and see how I get on. I`m no creator or anything but do love the feel and look of the xperia`s. Just something about Sony`s that scream class tbh
I love my 1 iii will this be worth blowing 1.3k to upgrade? I dunno
I don't understand why people keep saying this is too expensive. It's similar price to other flagships and offers so much more. Is it because it isn't mainstream enough?
Because at that price people would buy iPhone or Samsung instead
Sony's marketing sucks. Quality-wise Sony's phones trump both Apple and Samsung
They really don't
It’s such a shame Sony smartphones aren’t widely sold here anymore. My first ever smartphone was an Xperia arc and while I ended up selling it (financial reasons at the time), I never looked back and have since used smartphones ever since. I love how they still have a shutter button and dual front facing speakers, such underrated features but I would love it if my phones had them.
i kinda like being the only one who has a sony. best smart phones there are in my experience, and it blows away everything else i've tried.
i still have the xperia 1 and it's still running like new and doing everything i need without a problem.
i have felt no need to upgrade yet, especially since the last couple models apparently had overheating issues. i heard the 1 v was supposed to have a new cooling system to solve the overheating problem, so it seems this new sony is what i've been waiting for. i'll probably wait a couple years until it drops in price.
i bought my xoeria 1 a year or so after it came out for $800, and i'd like to get this new phone for around the same price, even if i have to wait a couple years. like i said, the phone i have is still working like new and it still amazes me how good it is, so i'm in no rush to replace it.
Result of everyone making fun of their design for not adapting the notch or hole punch. I remember hating Sony for this reason was a trend back then.
And to be honest, Sony is also at fault for making the phones expensive while providing software support for just a year and half. They wouldn't be able to compete in many countries that way, especially when the Chinese phones are dominating.
Incredibly gorgeous photos. I had a very pleasant feeling from their natural presentation of colors. Amazing device. No cutout for camera. Amazing looking device. Great job Sony
Dynamic range is garbage, and the noise control is terrible.
@@carver9312 it is a question of preferences. They look like natural photos to me, rather than computational recreation of reality which look amazing, but seldom is what eyes see. I am sure there is a HDR mode anyway.
@@ReinoldFZ the failure in dynamic range ruins the photos.
@@ReinoldFZ the sad part is the computational photography only looks good on phone displays, its terrible as they get bigger and they are default at jpeg quality, you can't use apple and Samsung results for business.
Does it overheat?
Finally a UK tech reviewer has got their mitts on the Sony Xperia 1 V and reviewing it!
Sony making the only phone I'd purchase in 2023.
But didn’t lol.
its crazy how a phone with headphone jack, SD card and stock android is called niche by tech reviewers because it has manual mode camera with basic auto. A phone with a hole in display is called a mainstream phone haha....its funny how most people are obsessed with social media camera filters but tech reviewers promote phones with basic camera futures...this culture of generation are a walking hypocrites.
Exactly. And this continue for 4 years since first Xperia 1 was launched.
One has to be very unfamiliar with tech overall for not knowing how to set up PhotoPro and VideoPro in full auto, where it produces great photos and videos, comparable to other competitors.
The people on ShitTube who called themself as "tech reviewer" actually aren't tech reviewer but paid shills who only praise the products if they are paid or sponsored for it. Those big channel is as honest as scammer. They are bunch of liars who fooled many people but sadly only smart people notice it
@@peterdurum434 they act like it's illegal to learn how to use a camera lol. It has become a taboo haha....

The one phone review I've been waiting for since a while !! Thanks Chris .
And now for the Xperia 5 V............
Sony is my favourite phone all of time, this is fact to mine!
I take your fact to myself too thanks
Same here already had two generations I think go for this one too
I've had a 1ii and currently have a 1iv and they're fantasic phones, it's really great to see Sony putting more effort into Xperia these days. I recently saw a carrier store in South-West London advertising the 1iv front and centre into their doorway.
Same bro :) ii and iV here too. Advice on what to do with the II is appreciated
Is there any difference in display between Mark ii vs Mark iv for watching 4k movies
Great phone, I have ordered it. 👍
Writing this comment on my XZ1 and absolutely in love with this new one. Nobody builds phones like Sony, still have decent battery life and software is still slick and snappy. But man, they nailed this compared to the Mk4
ayy I'm still using the xz1. But after 6 years its starting to show its age :( I love the xz 1 man, the design is simple yet classy.
Super excited for that s-cinetone filter. Also the less overheating as well.
Happy to see that they've sorted out the overheating. That was the main issue holding me back buying the last few models. I'm still going to wait for the Xperia 5 tho...and hope for a more sensible pricing.
I saw one review who mounted an xperia 1 mk V on a 4x4 Ranger and went offroad. No gimbal. I never been amazed in my life when I saw the result. the vid was stable AF and the quality is already good. that 4K @ 120 fps is a steal for video bloggers.
Finally, been waiting for your review. 😎
Great review! You hit all the points and answered my questions with it!!
I already bought it, waiting for it... It was expensive yeah but I know is gonna totally worth it, not gonna change phones por at least 5 years. Still using the XZ2 Premium since 2018
It most certainly will be worth it. A Sony device with these specs and the ability to record an hour of (high bitrate) 4K 60 video without an overheating problem in sight is exactly what I have been waiting for. It ain't cheap, but this kind of quality costs.
@_yap99_ Who said I didn't? I've already bought it, in Asia Market is already available, but not in the US Market... I pre-orderer 3 weeks ago. So I'm not sure what is your point. PS Actually there is a video here in youtube that show the guy who bought the same way as I did... It comes with the Linkbuds, Case and Glass
Great nuanced review. Thank you
Wow what a toon 'I've got a hangover whoaah' looks like you finally unleashing that hidden talent 😅

Hands down my favourite reviewer on UA-cam. The humour is the cherry on top
Great review!
This is the best phone available right now. They put so much thought into the design. Only downside is probably the software updates I think, the rest is great
@@AmirulMokhrisYea, the price too
@@AmirulMokhris still got enough features tbh
@@AmirulMokhris
Well, the price is similar to flagship offers from other manufacturers. So...
I had the xperia 5ii awhile back. Great phone but just know that sony phones are not very future proof as they have terrible resale/trade in value.
Also fixing a cracked screen will be extremely expensive as you need to replace the entire assembly. Only recommend for die hard sony fans.
@@raze_6474 i had the Xperia 1 and currently use the 1iii. I had both phones for about 2 years. I dropped them a couple of times during that time period and they never broke down on me. Its build is quite sturdy its not 2013 anymore...
Hey Chris - love your videos, I was wondering are you going to review the Urbanista Atlanta earbuds anytime soon?
Tech spurt, you are one of my favorite youtuber for mobile phone reviews, as your reviews are quite informative, and your humor always makes me watch them till the end.
Keep up the great work 👍
Cheers Samad, much appreciated!
Same. I've come to look forward to his humor in every video but it's always a surprise on which part of the video it happens (something serious that makes you concentrate on the info and make your own assessment at the same time, like how he ended that ghost touch issue haha) and that makes it even better!
Really love the fact that it doesn't have a cut out hole in the front screen.
Chris. Having been rocking the Sony Xperia mk1 ii for the last three years. Not had any issues, phone, camera have just worked as intended. Along with very little bloat apps. Looking forward to trying out the Sony Xperia mk1 V. Yay, for sd card and headphone jack. Pre order it with the xmb mk V headphones.
It's durability is underated too caseless it was rad outside of it sliding off my lap in the car
Your Hangover song is great 👍. I hope you manage to release the song. The Music Charts will get all jiggly for it. Your the next music legend Chris.
Audio quality is the reason I am curious. Sony has consistently released fantastic Hi-Res Audio products. So, fingers crossed, this will be no let down.
I currently have an LG V60 for the "Quad-Dac". And since LG is no longer in the cellphone game, I had to upgrade to something that still has a headphone jack. This sounds like it's a worthy upgrade.
Wow, I love this review!
Great review as I’d like something different when my current iPhone SE 2020 needs replacing sometime in Q4 this year. I love listening to the music I ripped from my CD collection, so a headphone jack and SD storage are both key features for me.
I tried a Sony Walkman a few years ago and it’s digital upscaling for some poorly recorded music was amazing (I mean the original recordings in the studio were poor). If this phone has the same upscaling software codec, it could persuade me to buy this phone later this year.
Thanks for a great review. As a longtime Apple customer, I’ve just got to the point where I want something different, even though all of my mid-range iPhones have generally been very good.
If you can get away from Apple's walled garden, you'll then appreciate the Sony phone. Best camera for those who know how to shoot photos. And the headphone jack is very welcoming. It's a true multi media device on a phone.
Smh...it seems like reviewers make it a point of making remarks about the price...I guess saying the "heafty price of £1299" just under 30 seconds from the start isn't as bad as some others I've seen lol!
But I wonder no one does that when the S23U base model was $1199 or the 256gb iPhone 14 Pro Max for $1199 gets released, yet neither have a 4K display, headphone jack, front facing stereo speakers, expandable storage and a killer camera system lol!
My suggestion would be save the price shade til the end lol!
Looks good although I can't help but notice your sunburn . I can't tell when your phones orange wallpaper ends & you begin 😂
Ha aye, the perils of travelling abroad where the sun isn't safely shrouded by a nice thick layer of raincloud...
Great review Uncle Spurt!
Can tell we have had some sunshine in blighty 😂 great review as always pal
First time watching a phone review video. Witty and useful. Thank you 🦸♂️
love sony always!!! they always do innovations before the others!!!
wow amazing! im very curios about this phone
Currently using Sharp..checking online i think Japanese phone makers are the only manufacturer that still made a smartphone that supports the micro SD feature.. don't know yet if my next purchase is old Sony flagship or not..because old Sony flagship got the heat management problem..probably will be stuck using the Sharp as it still going good even in 2023..and maybe for a couple of years in the future..
i got an iPhone 12 as a present back when it was a new thing, and i must say, its just a tool... i don't enjoy using it at all, its like a vw golf or a smart car.... i miss my Xperia who was pushing me to do things , i will get this one definitely, i miss being excited by the idea of watching something on the phone or shooting a photo, not to mention editing raw from my full frame camera on the go with the microSD card, swap and edit instantly, then post, i also started to use less the camera because I always have to get home, put the file on computer edit then the Instagram on computer sucks compared to android or iOS, basically, the iPhone sucked the hobby out of me...
Very good review..thinking to switch from Samsung fold to this..what you think? I really appreciate camera phone like this
I e had 4 Xperia phones loved them all ,im on Xperia 1iii at present,i may be tempted on the mark 5 if price comes down, imo you cant beat the build quality on Sony phones.
Gorgeous
May I ask what software you are using for labeling your videos like where you label the camera later on in the video... please sir?
I'm happy to see that you found the anime on 05:44, which is a hidden gem. While the ending may be polarizing to put it mildly, the fight sequence animation is up there with the GOATs imho

3:16 that was surprisingly specific
All the pro photographers/videographers I've seen reviewing this phone have loved it... It's a shame Sony hasn't done more work on the basic mode for the average phone user

Hey, so I wanted to fire off a comment, because I bought this phone after seeing your review. I do genuinely think your review is excellent, but I wanted to say, that since you've uploaded it I'd say that either the firmware you were running on, or maybe your procedure didn't do the camera enough justice. The current version of this phone is outstanding, and I've been dailying it for a week, coming from a Pixel 6 Pro, and I genuinely really, really like this phone. My main point though, the point and shootability of the camera in this phone has been vastly improved, and off the line, the camera is outstanding, especially in comparison to the 6 Pro. The basic mode is excellent, and I've gotten really great photos out of the basic mode. It's point, and shoot, and you can do a little bit of color grading, and manual exposure, focus, and even bokeh in basic. Now, I spent some time in Photo Pro, and running it through full manual settings, and found it's a real rival to my Canon 6D, with a 17-70mm L lens. Which blew my mind, since ya know, full frame sensor usually means outstanding quality and pixel density, and well... Canon L lenses, are ya know, the pinnacle of lenses for Canon cameras. I've found that, yeah the Canon beats the Xperia 1 V in night shooting, but that's a little bit obvious, you're going to have a real hard time beating a full frame sensor in night shooting. But boy did it really give it a run for it's money.
All said and done, I never thought phones would beat DSLRs, and then they did for general application. Then I figured, well they'll never beat them for more specific stuff, like lens changeability going from wide angle, to medium telephoto, to telephoto. But then they did. Then, I figured, well, night photography, and astrophotography (My personal favorites) will be safe. I honestly don't think they're safe anymore lol. This phone does excellent in night photography, and the AI enhancements for telephoto shots are unreal. It almost pisses me off, because my 6D kit has a 14mm prime f/2.8 lens, my 17-70mm f/2.8 L lens, and my 85mm f/1.4 prime lens, and this phone basically replaced all of them. I mean the 6D is still a little bit better with the medium telephoto stuff, but no image stabilization, or AI touch up, so the quality is almost negligible.
So, all in all, outstanding phone, outstanding camera quality. Sony really did good with this phone. I wouldn't go all the way in saying this is a full replacement to DSLRs, but damn it's like 95-99% of the way there.
Thanks for the comment. How will it stand up when you have to do large format pictures that you want to print? With large I talk about from 2 meters pictures.
I'm sorry but I've used the pixel 6 pro and Sony Xperia 1 ii and I can tell you the Google pixel cameras are much better I would expect the pixel 8 pro to be better than the Xperia 1 v but I'm getting the 1 v because I can use it one handed without dropping it it's lighter and it fits comfortably in the pocket. I'd probably get the s23 ultra over the pixel 8 pro because of battery life but cameras are good on both. I'm sure I will like it when it arrives but in all honesty if I could afford it and was willing to turn to the dark side I'd get an iPhone 15proMax 512gb it's just the best and that's the facts 🤣 f*cking fruit phone 🍓🥭🍒🍎 😂😂
Love my Xperia 1 iii - think this sounds like a great upgrade and the basic camera mode seems to have got a bit of a polish too (although I do hear that they've binned the notification light.... Nooooooooo!!). However, in the current financial climate I may well be dragging out the life of my 1iii with a very cheap SIM only deal at the end of my contract....... 😞
I'm the exact same. Have the 1 iii and it's going great.. This looks fantastic but not 1.3k fantastic compared to the 1 iii. I think I'll wait another year
Man! I've been tempted to upgrade to the newest Sony Xperia 1 V, I've been happily rocking the Xperia 5 II since release day and it's been one of the best phones ever.
Oh man, an Alestorm cover!? Nice
ThanksMuch!..yes sir..
Just received my green version. It's well worth it's price and much more polished than the previous versions. I like that they still offer options to users like 3.5mm headphone jack and expandable memory. Makes the excuses of other manufacturers taking out these features in their flagships a joke.
Mark 5 is live now!
Cant wait to see 5 v
Would love one of these but can't justify paying out that kind of money. When is the 5V due to be released and any idea what sort of price tag that will come with?
I will buy but need to be 6 inch max, much thicker for bigger battery, much better camera automode - most of my photos are done very fast no time for manual settings, good quality plastic at the back no glass and lower price.
Where are the picks from? it looks great!
Finally sony xperia 1V review from you. 😎 Sony fans assembled 😎😎
Headphone jack? Expandable memory? God I'm in love.
How does this phone compare to social media? Does it take better than the iphone pics and videos, on stories? Thanks
Is this good as a point and shoot or is the camera a pro setup only, with lots of faffing needed?
Huge Sony fan but I prefer smaller mobiles. Looking forward to xperia 5 v even though I will still find that a little large for my hands thats the only option I have for a smaller Sony mobile. Currently have xperia 5 and for my small hands its still a little big 😂🤣 Love your vids. Keep up the great content 👍🏾
Good stroking hands
want a smaller phone too, that’s why i still rock an Xperia xz1c
At least they made the 5V quite a bit shorter compared to the original 5, while keeping the same display :)
I don’t know if the screen not being LTPO has helped, but I am sensitive to all oLED screens nowadays, except Sony’s. Mark 3, Pro-I, they are all ok for my eyes, as long as the brightness is 70%+, or lower with Extra Dim active. No more nausea, sand eyes or carousel sessions in my bed.

From where do you get your wallpapers backgrounds
I had Xperia Xz2 Compact..is it possible to get Creative Effects from it onto my Samsung phone..I loved using those while making videos.Or are Creative Effects baked into Sony phones? Thanks.
I am thinking of getting this phone but does it suffer from the fingerprint sensor issue (the sensor completely stops working after a period of time)? I have a 5 iii which works brilliantly except for the fingerprint sensor....the sensor was completely dead after 14 month's of ownership. The fingerprint settings have disappeared from the menu too! 😥
Now that Black Friday 2023 has come i will be upgrading my Xperia 1 ii to this 1 v it could probably go on another year but i don't want to risk it and pay an extra £15-20 a month over 24 months. I will just say that i would really really like a 6.7 or 6.8 inch 21:9 screen as an Xperia 1 mk VI+ with a 5500mha battery too keep that extra screen realestate going and maybe a 1440p ltpo 1400 nits screen to differentiate between the models. Now that i would buy in a heartbeat.
On security updates, is iPhone 14 a good choice? As there’s no more blackberry in the market.

10:06 Did I hear correctly, that the photo only has 12 Megapixles even though the sensor has 52? Are you sure it is like this in all modes? Like the Pro apps too? Would be a bummer for me.

Hows Sony doing with the overheating battery issue now? I had the Xperia 1 and at times it got extremely hot. Recently bought a new phone and wanted to go for the 1 V , but ended up getting Galaxy S23 instead. Would like to get more Sony phones in the future but only if they fix the overheating..
I have been using Xperia 5 since 6 months and I loved it

Hey Uncle Spurt I wonder are Sony going too bring out the new Sony Xperia 5 mk5 because I loved the very first Sony Xperia 5 phone it was absolutely brilliant wee phone.
kinda curious how the 1/1.33" sensor in this will do against the 1/1" sensor in the mi 13 ultra
Have you got a protective case on your TV why is it so big around the bezel ???
Sony camera sensor is the best in DSLR or mirrorless alpha. Maybe that is the reason is not included on the phone to encourage buying the alpha.
Chris when you gonna have your hands on Huawei watch 4 ?
Does it come with a back pack to carry it.
I've been waiting for this phone to launch, I've had many Sony's in the past and loved their efforts despite sometimes their phones being like a Cortina next to a Cosworth (Samsung) phones but I love watching movies, taking pics and playing games but I'm torn between this, s23 ultra and z fold 4 now the prices have come down, which would you go for? It's a shame the Oppo find X6 pro isn't coming here!
For me personally, I'd rule out the Fold 4 out of those options. The camera just isn't as good as the S23 Ultra and imho the folding screen tech still isn't quite where it really needs to be yet. Then its between the Samsung S23U and Sony X 1 V. Should make the choice a bit easier.
@@chloebidwell228 thanks, I'll probably wait and see what deals are revealed on the Xperia and make my decision
