Sony's new Xperia 1 V looks like a decent flagship offering with killer cameras, a slick design, and solid performance, but with past overheating issues and a price tag that could scare buyers away, does Bell think people should give this phone a chance or is this another big miss for the Xperia lineup?

I still want to move to Sony for my next phone. The camera isn't a huge selling point for me, just a nice to have. The headphone jack, SD card slot, front facing speakers, and no stupid hole in the screen for the selfie camera though? Absolutely reasons to buy it. Remember when all of those things were standard? I'm glad at least one company isn't dedicated to screwing you out of them so you'll buy a new set of wireless earbuds every year or sign up for their cloud storage.

That's the exact same with me! I'm typing this on my Xperia 1 mk3. It's a great phone! I do some photo/cinematography, so that's nice, but it's not the most important thing for me. The phone is really solid, feels nice, as an awesome screen, which is uhh... The only real bad thing, actually. I recently cracked it, and it SUCKS to replace. Apple and Samsung, even Google, it's pretty easy, since there are so many of the phones, shops can easily get their hands on replacement screens. Meanwhile, nobody has Xperia screens, so you have to send it off to a 3rd party company that Sony hires to handle everything for them. I haven't seen too good reviews for them, you'll be without the phone for around 3 weeks, and it's super expensive to replace! Like $300 plus shipping. Just something to be aware of, which you might not think about at first.

Exactly, I bought the Xperia 1 III as it was the first phone with a 4K 120hz display and also one of the first with a variable lens in a long time. Actually, the photos and videos were one of the main features I was looking for and I wasn't disappointed, in fact I was impressed. In a world where every phone uses AI to draw over the images you've captured, I was in awe when I saw how close it looked to real life. No frame stacking artifact, no AI overlay, just pure hardware. My pets no longer look like stuffed toys and texts wouldn't have a different font.

One of the only good phones left on the market. 3.5mm, SD slot, current Android, no STUPID front camera cutouts or gimmicks, and a great battery. A lack of any one of those is a deal breaker for me. Skinned Android used to be too, but given the alternatives?
I'm the type of person to keep a phone for 5 years or more; my last phone I ended up going to CyanogenMod for a closer-to-current Android version, before finally upgrading to my latest device. If I'm going to get a new phone, I'm gonna want something like this Xperia, where it has all the physical features that I want (read: that SHOULD BE THE STANDARD), and is brand new so has the longest possible service life.
Here's hoping that when I'm shopping for my NEXT next phone, it's in an era where Apple hasn't made it a trend to replace your phone's screen with a brain chip, or their new AR headset. I don't want to see what Samsung and Google's janky, slapped-together, bandwagon-chasing ripoffs of those look like 😬

Every iPhone user I know who kept their phone beyond 2.5 to 3 years carries a portable charger in their pocket everywhere they go haha.
Sony is not perfect, sure, but I'll take 3 years of updates any time + all the features they actually offer (such as micro SD card support, 3.5mm headphone jack, dual SIM, no notch / no hole punch display, dual stereo speakers, 4K HDR 600+ nits display at 21:9, and so on) ... and you know? I own the Xperia 1, mark 4. Here is a list of the things I don't like about it.
    1. The aluminum frame is painted, so every little dent or scratch it will turn silver and that makes it very noticeable.
    2. Xperia Z5 Had a dual sim and an extra SD card slot, so I wish this would be also available on the Xperia 1.
    3. It overheats
    4. The cameras, other than the wide lens one, needing more light and do deliver softer-blurry like photos
    5. The flash light is bloody weak. Useless
    6. U can't watch the slow mo effect of a 120fps recorded video on it. It plays super smooth regular motion vid. Unless I'm mistaking you need to interpret the video file as 120fps in a 24 fps sequence editing profile to get that smooth slow motion.

Let me add some as an owner of 1 IV (model CT72):
      8. It still overheats, despite the monthly software updates.
      9. Hella buggy software experience. I've had android ever since I got into smartphones and never has the various bugs annoyed/interfered my & the daily use of the phone as much as it has with this Xperia. Very disappointing & frustrating user experience.
      10. Can confirm, the cameras need a TON of light to really outperform/stand out amongst the Pixel/Galaxy/iPhone competition.
      11. The telephoto optical zoom lens is honestly more of a gimmick - it can look decent when you have a TON of light to work with, but even then it will look very soft/blurry.
      12. The cameras in general are much harder to get good quality photos compared to computational photography that Pixel/Galaxy/iPhone have, although the manual experience can be fun.

I have not had as many overheating problems with this phone. For context I am coming from Apple's iPhone. I used iPhones for the past 15 years. I frequently had crashing and shut downs in iOS due to overheating. I was nervous buying the Sony Xperia because so many UA-camrs talk down about how bad the overheating is on the Xperia line of phones. Then those same UA-camrs will talk about how great the iPhone line of phones are. I can confirm (at least anecdotally) that the Sony Xperia 5 mk III handles over heating better than all the iPhones that I've owned over the past 15 years.

Exactly! Even in mid range phones. My Samsung A72 got stolen last year and I replaced it with an A52s. Almost the same phone, with a slightly faster chipset too, but man, I sorely miss the 3X telephoto lens, it was my main choice, even for everyday photography.

Pretty much the Xperia 1 iii. I do think zoom could be improved and the 24mm can be narrowed a bit to 26mm or 28mm. But that's wishful thinking. I'll just wait for them to improve the sensor on the ultrawide and zoom for their next iterations.

To me, the Xperia 1s (and 5s) will always be a smartphone with Alpha abilities rather than a camera phone. They tend to be only a slightly processed while keeping image natural so it's easier for the user to edit later. Yes there's some overblown highlights here and there but that's the same with regular mirrorless on the market. It's just old school image capture. It basically replaced the RX100 in the long run. I hope Sony keep this smartphone for a while. It's definitely a handy tool if you prefer to take control of your shots.

A lot of people say this but you simply cannot get an alpha camera system and something as versatile as this, in your pocket, for 1400$.
Compared to other phones, this has 120fps HDR HLG 4k on all back sensors (now S-Cinetone is included too), object, human + animal eye AF for video and photo work which are all impeccably accurate and fast, a true optical zoom range on the telephoto (which is a decently far reaching one too, 125mm), the 30fps burst mode which no other smartphone has and 3 photo + video apps that give you way more control than any other brand's solutions.
These phones have higher specs than some full frame Alpha cameras, and they obviously beat the competition.
Couple that with the natural outputs, the lack of over-sharpening (which is, again, present in no other phone, which has resulted in some UA-camrs calling their results "blurry" because they're so used to gross camera processing) and other small goodies like the new stacked sensor or the uninterrupted screen and you have a package that's way more useful than anything else, readily available to you in a tiny box.
Yeah I don't regret my 5 III, and that's still missing newer features I detailed here. It depends on the choices you have. I don't have the money to build the system that I want even now, but I sure as hell could drop a couple of bucks for a slightly older flagship that opens up way more doors than other brands would let me.

I actually used it to shoot an internal training video for the workplace with a mic plugged it, instead of using the company dslr and it was just as good. I also went on a trip with some friends with iphone 14 pros, and we all agreed i got the better shots because of the flexibility the 1 V offered especially under low light conditions.
    Overheating is non-existent.
Fingerprint sensor is also extremely good, unequivocally the best on a Sony phone. (Sensor on power buttons can be hit and miss for Sony, my 5II for example wasn't very good).

Xperia 5 MkIII owner here. (That's the lower end model, two iterations ago for those of you keeping score. Sony's naming scheme doesn't make sense.) I can confirm that lots of things about Sony phones are great. I love the aspect ratio, and even the 1440p screen on my unit is very nice. Not as nice as the 1 series, but I can't imagine my battery life would be as good with a 4k display.
That said, the camera and video apps do cause overheating, and I have frequent issues with basic functionality such as GPS and WiFi. Also, although I appreciate the greater control Sony's camera app provides, if I'm honest I was probably getting more consistently better shots with my Pixel. I'm not a practiced-enough photographer to properly make use of the bells and whistles Sony included, and the lack of a proper computational "auto" mode is a definite minus for me.
I probably wouldn't pull the trigger on another Sony phone but for one thing - I bought a custom made leather wallet folio case for it, and it will never fit any other phone. I'm stuck with 21:9 aspect ratio units if I want to keep the folio, and these are some of the only ones. It'll make the decision more difficult when the time comes, certainly...
Great review - presenter did an excellent job!
