    With this Xperia Pro - I, Sony became the first company to use 0 plastic in their packaging and still manage to throw in a charger brick.
    This is truly eco friendly

    • @SHENRAR
      @SHENRAR 2 роки тому +118

      eco friendly is to keep using your existing, working, good enough phone for a couple more years until it dies, then send it out for recycling. To use no plastic on the packaging is nice, but it does not change the fact that Sony is a huge manufacturer that pollutes, consumes resources and generates tons of waste just in order to sell consumer products. Every step counts but maybe the truly revolutionary would be to make a new model every 2 years instead of every year, that would save more resources and help the planet more than any non-plastic wrap. ( I dont mean to be rude to your comment or anything, not trying to start a fight here XD)

    • @dimaztri19

      @@SHENRAR yeah true dat, but it's better than most manufacturer / company that says they did this kind of thing for the betterment of environment but took the charger out of the original set up so you have to buy it separately which will come in another packaging that most likely will waste another plastic thingy.
      Sony also limit their quick charge from 18-30 Watt to maintain the battery health so it will have a longer lifetime.
      But then again, it's a businesses. This company needs to produce and sell something new every year to keep the business running.

      @@SHENRAR That's why Sony doesn't have planned obsolescence. You can use their phones for a long time (4+ years) without any noticeable degradation to the phone's functionality unlike certain companies that I prefer not to name.
      Sony has all sorts of systems to prolong the lifespan of the battery like Qnovo adaptive charging and battery care that really helps in the long term.

      @@pixels_per_inch I have not mentioned programmed obsolescence, I talked about customers not buying a new phone when theirs still work. I am aware of the quality of Sony products, but to reduce consumption, we need to stop buying constantly, because we do whether we need it or not, and the responsible thing would be for us to slow down and for them to adapt to that.

    • @SHENRAR
      @SHENRAR 2 роки тому +10

      @@pixels_per_inch I am sorry for coming back to this conversation when it was clearly ended, but I got a notification and re-read your comment, and in the last part, where you say that "at the end is you who is causing damage to the environment" I cant disagree more. Of course we have a lot of responsibility with our consumption decisions, but you dont pollute, you dont go outsource to third world countries to save money on labor, you dont invest in a business model that deforest the world and transport goods twice around the world just to save some marginal profits, the companies you buy from do that, not you, you see the final product but not the process, and they are well aware of that and keep it to themselves. Does Nestle tell you in their ads that the chocolate you buy is responsible for slave labor? Does Zara tells you they use kids from Bangladesh to sew their clothes? they hide that and sell you lifestyle. The only way to get to know about that stuff is to dig deep into everything you buy and, they know only a minimal fraction of their clients will do that. the narrative that you are the one killing the planet is really good for the ones on top, damn, even the concept of "personal carbon footprint" was introduced by BP to make you think that you making toast for breakfast was what was heating up the planet. Again, I am not here to fight, just thought this was something worth said here.

      It's less bright and flashy, but more true to life... Maybe with some post processing or more careful adjustment of the controls, the Sony could produce as good or better results than the iPhone, but the iPhone, Samsung, and Pixel have that computational/AI advantage where it's a much more "one-click for great results" solution, just one that gives you less control for the results you want, even if they are great. So Sony is definitely targeting a niche here, but a niche that clearly exists.
      And as far as Sony phones go, I've gotta say this is the coolest one I've ever seen from them, so they're going in the right direction.

    Thanks for bringing this up, the whole computational photography thing is really the central point here.
    I do a lot of mirrorless photography so sometimes people ask me what phone they should get for the best photo quality. I usually tell them that we're now in the post-hardware-specs era where it doesn't really matter that much what the sensor is actually outputting, it only matters what the software then does with this image. If an image looks more appealing at first glance in a side-by-side comparison it's not because the sensor has some crazy stats that make the image look better, it's usually just because the processing adapts the colours and details to look more like whatever patterns some neural network has extracted from a huge dataset of aesthetically pleasing professionally edited images.

    • @greven182
      @greven182 2 роки тому +11

      I understand what you are getting at, but it is not really true and it is very evident by the quality of the photos that Marques showed here from the Sony compared to the iPhone. Any decent camera, event a point and shoot like the Sony RX will have way better quality than any phone camera can produce. Mobile photography always has that fake HDR look to it, even during the day, never enough contrast since the dynamic range is faked.
      Of course some shots do benefit a lot from that computational photography so out of the camera and to people that don't really understand post processing it is way easier to get a better photo on an iPhone or similar, but there is still no competition between a dedicated camera and a phone.
      With this said, the best camera is the one you got with you, so most times that is your phone! :)

    • @PascalSommerMovies
      @PascalSommerMovies 2 роки тому +8

      @@greven182 Yes, completely agree about that fake HDR look! We're nowhere near the point yet where I'd trade my Sony A7S II for a phone camera. Although as you point out, most people won't notice it that much under "normal" (i.e. whatever the algorithms have been optimized for) conditions.
      However I'd go even further and say that it's not just that non-photographers don't notice, it's rather that phones and cameras are competing in slightly different spaces. For someone creating photos that are to be viewed on a small screen, competing against over-saturated Instagram photos, while under time pressure to get content out immediately during some event, those iPhone/Samsung/Pixel phone cameras might just be the better tool for the job even for people heavily invested in all their proper camera gear.

      It's like he said in the vid, the vast majority of people (particularly average consumers) always pick the brighter more vibrant photos, even if they aren't as detailed or color accurate. The blind smartphone camera test he does every year kinda proves it too. Phones that have better cameras on paper generally lose to phones that do bright/vibrant photos.

      @@becomingfr33 Yeah, we'll see what happens in the next blind smartphone camera test. The audience for that is usually enthusiasts and techies and the bright vibrant pic phones usually won that over the accurate/detailed pics too. I guess the grander point is that while accurate it doesn't look impressive. Other phones ride the line better where it looks realistic but still has a little pop to it. Marques was just pointing out that the phone is doing little to no processing, almost to a fault. And even when it comes to enthusiasts and photographers, the phones catch of not actually using the full 1 inch sensor is an issue too. So I don't think it would sell well even among enthusiasts/photographers. The backgrounds were very detailed and beautifully blurred, the colors look natural, and the images look pleasing as they are as natural as our eyes see the world.

    It turns out that there was a good reason the whole sensor isn't used, and there are benefits from doing what they did versus using a smaller sensor. Has alot to do with noise/aberrations/clarity etc and shutter speed or something. Worth looking into before thinking Sony was trying to look impressive for no reason.

      @JC-XL 2 роки тому +16

      @@turbotaquitogoogle8095 It's based on old Video Camera Tubes - the "sensors" (cathode ray tubes) used in television cameras back in the days before the first "modern" CCD sensors in the 1980s.
      Of course marketing people always use the largest number they can claim, so these were marketed by the external physical diameter of the tube made of thick glass, so the useful diagonal was much smaller - a 1" tube (25mm) would only have about 16mm of useful diagonal sensitive area.
      When modern silicon CCD and CMOS sensors started replacing them, marketing people conveniently borrowed that old convention (that at least had some basis back in the day) to call 16mm diameter rectangular sensors 1" (25mm) sensors although there is nothing on the sensor that measures anywhere close to 25mm.

I prefer Sony's design, the headphone Jack is ok and the SD card reader is a plus. Video out is big for me and finding a phone that has it is challenging if you don't like Samsung and Apple products. The price is steep for what it is but that's been a Sony thing forever and I doubt they are going to change that. Yeah I recall the good old days where LG, HTC and Sony were fighting to bring the most unique features in their smartphones (like button in the back and tap to wake for LG, waterproof of fingerprint reader on the lock button for Sony, or the 2 face stereo speaker and the full aluminium body for HTC). Now it's only chinese phones with better camera and better battery than the previous year.

      Yeah , but the problem is , a single piece of glass does not on its own necessarily make it take a good camera shot , and even if it did , nor does it make a smart phone a compelling buy .
      LG got a lot right , but also got some things wrong , as an ex lg owner , this is why I never bought another Lg phone.

    Sony is starting to become my go-to for recommending higher end Android Smartphones. Now if they made some budget phones, they would get all of my recommendations.

      I highly doubt that Sony can make a good budget phone. The Xperia 10 line is maybe not really budget, but somewhat affordable. The problem is that the 10 is so inferior to the Xperia 5 and Xperia 1 and even other phones in that price range. It does have head phone jacket and a SD slot, but on all other aspects it is a mediocre phone. Even the camera on the Xperia 10 is not that good. It feels like they design the software for their high-end phones and it doesn't really work on the cheaper Xperia 10.

      Naahh, budget phone has been their Achilles heel, imo lol. I owned the Xperia C, Xperia E, and used the 1st-gen Xperia 10 for 2 months. They're pretty lackluster for the price. I'm more of the "they should just focus on building flagships" crowd, personally.

    I'm not an expert about the definition to the coverage of camera. What I love so much about Sony is they don't fake the result of the picture. For other brands of smartphone, they have too much brightness to that person you're taking is totally different when you see that person right there in front of you, while sony tells the truth, what you see is real in everything.

    The camera on the right I think is higher quality, it looks more honest and doesn't have the "processed" detail look. I use a sony alpha camera as a hobbyist so might be the reason i prefer it.

    I feel like Sony is just such a busy company they don't really care what their smartphone division does, it just seems like Sony approaches them and says "Look, we need a new phone here is X budget, just make something"
    Phone Division: "What do you want us to make?"
    Sony: "We don't care just make something cool, later"
    Phone division: "Hell yeah"
