After you've felled your opponent with soto makikomi , always look for a wrist lock on the trapped arm - people are trying to cope with just having been thrown and they forget to protect their wrist .
Please don't listen to the people who want "less talking". You're the goddamn authority here - the stuff you're saying is stuff that people watching this don't know and need to hear. It provides context and fleshes out the tutorial. Great stuff by the way.
The hari and osoto do look the same with no gi, and it's cool to see the changes you have to make from gi to no gi, we offten practice no gi and everyone has a small but different no gi set ups and grips good stuff man
This comment isn't about the name, but rather the way in which you do it. When i wrestled in high school, coach always told us to just bring our left leg to it's knee, and drive the right foot all the way through in that direction. They still fall, and you're more protected from him regaining guard. Of course this way is correct also, just telling you what i was told. Love and respect what you guys are doing here. :)
Yeah good job brother. I know ALL about being hated on and it happens on almost every video I view. I'm looking forward to trying them out tomorrow and thanks!
you guys did a good job dont worry about the haters most of them dont even train at all just tapout shirt weares that think know know everything but dont even know how to show respect to others
Exactly my first thought too Timoth. For very, very long time ago, I`ve learned this technic, very similar, from a big judoinstructor in Europé and this is more like Harai Goshi than O-Soto-Gari. Anyway, but most important is that`s work. Good video-lesson!
Nice. I use these pretty much as you have shown them with good results. I'd call the first one harai goshi too, but names don't matter. Only results matter. Good video.
thats why i said beside bejing style which uses the coat. there are others styles many not related to the evolution of the bejing as it is manchurian influenced. there is a video that shows the rarely seen shanxi and henan styl. one of them resembles freestyle with out the shots.
Judo is for sure one of the hardest to learn , its why I'm obsessed with it my very first day of judo I seriously considered not training mma at all and devoting all my time to judo , because judo is tough it does not come easy my instructor is a 5th dan kodokan from japan and he told me anybody that wants fast results should not take judo, you should take karate. In my opinion its the superior grappling art in any situation but the fact is you will not be able to do these moves without practice
Agreed Tim, it really is something you'd have to experience or see live. The 2D takes away from my actual angles and where I place my leg. I've gotten a better camera and set up and I've been thinking about readdressing this issue.
@illonebaby That's fine. It's one of those things it makes more sense when seen or performed live. When you see the angle I'm coming in at. If you can't tell I'm chest to chest. The way I've learned the throws everybody is pointing out is to change your profile so that you facing away. Not only that but the way I'm driving the leg is towards the hamstring. I appreciate the comment though.
If he slips his right arm under the other guys arm as opposed to above it, the other guy's just going to clamp down on it, rendering it useless. The shoulder shrugging movement won't do anything. (Around the 3:00 mark)
I think many would argue that because of the Makikomi that you can't technically do Tai Otoshi. That being said I think the Tai Otoshi foot work would be a fine follow up as long you have good back defense.
You've got the right idea. It's hard for me to explain in the written word. Essentially you never reach backwards throughout the entire process. Your arms are always in front of you. If their heels are on the ground they are not off balance. Did you see the video of my daughter throwing?
Very cool stuff, I am trying to get into MMA found a great gym close by just waiting on money lol. On the head throw it is similar to what I did in Highschool wrestling but I locked hands and tryed to push the arm to the head, is the way you showed better? I usually tryed to muscle the guy over and I know technique is better from my recent roll sesion. And by accident I did the throw with just the arm, not as good as you lol, helped that I am a heavy and the guy was much lighter lol :D
Thanks for the reply. Tai Otoshi is kinda one of my "signature" moves, so I was really hoping I could adopt it to MMA...I just wanted another trustworthy opinon :)
When you set up any throw you need to unbalance your opponent. Unbalance opponent, then enter, then execute. This is known as Kuzushi in Judo. The hard part is maintaining this unbalance during the execution. This simply takes practice.
Do you think a Tai Otoshi would be possible from that Makikomi setup? As in right as he is going for that duck under, you pull a drop Tai Otoshi. Im guessing its too risky to give up the back on reversal though...just curious about your thoughts on it. Great vid btw. And some angles of your Osoto Gari looks an awful lot like a Hirai Goshi =P
Have you ever considered doing 'ken-ken' style Osoto? Putting this type of video on the internet takes cajones. Best of luck spreading Judo to the MMA world, I would love to see more professional fighters incorperate Judo into the clinch.
As a person who loves the suplex I'm very much aware of this. As per your other comment this is the maneuvers I set up for by doing this entry. Like I tell many people if you don't like don't use it. I would rather know it than not know it. I've caught a few people asleep with this during grappling tournaments and MMA. I think I've got to do a suplex video next.
Yeah, mixed feelings on that. While I would normally agree, you can see that some wanted more. What do you think? Do the throws and offer explanation later?
i wasnt saying dont use it if your in that position. i was saying i wouldnt put my self in that position as my go to move plan a etc. nothing wrong with the tech. i was also answering heyeho honestly yes they can take your back, suplex, back hip drop they could also roll under for a reverse heal hook, they are the things to be aware of when in this postion.
I asked because I was curious. Usually instructors list these things on their websites and since his weren't I thought I'd ask. And yeah, it actually does matter what rank people have if they're teaching. Sure, guys might be badasses who don't have ranks, but between someone who hasn't got a rank and someone who does I'd probably go with the ranked person.
Thank you great man! I need to learn a few throws because apparently schools don't consider Jiu Jitsu as extra curricular so I'm gonna have to join wrestling :\ And in wrestling I can't pull these guys to guard and sweep, I'm gonna get pinned :(
@MrProwner It's simply stating a fact. If you want to argue semantics the fact is I don't use my hip as the fulcrum or the main leverage in that throw. Look at your argument for a second. You're arguing that it would be easier to do "x" throw. It doesn't matter if it was easier in your opinion. It wasn't the throw I showed. It's not the throw I use in that sequence. You're arguing just to argue. If you want to discuss something that's one thing but this is ridiculous.
I like to learn both Gi and Non Gi Throws. Basically Gi Throws preps you for grabbing clothing like a Jacket or Shirt. Were could I learn Abu Dhabi Wrestling? I looked in my State and nothing! I got down Muy Thai, BJJ, I want to also add Tae Kwon Do for good switch kicks
I am not trying to be arrogant. I just think that if you give people too much detail it can be overwhelming and they will miss the fundamentals. Like you stated the importance of any take down is setup, level change, and penetration. Also, I am a BJJ/judo guy so I am speaking from that perspective. I just think that, in this case, less is more. Try thinking of your audience...you are an expert they may not be. Peace.
if you realize, he stuffs any back taking techniques away from him. he leans forward knowing hes going to take his back. unless you want to get a hurnia, your not gunna be able to suplex a guy from that position
Yeah I'm not getting my opponent off balanced. Today I got the guy's back and I couldn't trip him because he was balanced on both of his feet... :\ And I did see the video! So with your right arm you push them to the right to get their left foot off the mat, then pull down on them to lift them up and sweep with the inside right leg once they're on air?
1. We weren't addressing head movement and direct entry, but I would agree. 2. Please don't be passive aggressive with your comments. We're not comparing penis's here. This is a video to give people some ideas on some throws. Not who does this throw more fluid. Try to be a bit more constructive next time; there are a lot of wrong things in that video. That are a lot more things I could have addressed. I thought they would come up in discussion. I guess I was wrong about that too.
What do you do with the hips? I don't get it? I need strength to do throws and I can't throw bigger guys, I'm assuming I'm doing something wrong! What do you do with your hips? Do you just like pull him down on your back? Help meehhhh!
Internet is a funny monster. I believe we're both just pointing out things as a matter of conversation. Not really thinking we're arguing, at least I wasn't. The only thing I'd disagree with you on that last post is the reverse heel hook. You have to have the arm free to be able to maneuver to it.
I know you're not trying to come off as arrogant. I also realize I can't please everybody. I took your comment as constructive. I've got to figure out the balance on too much rhetoric and not enough.
Do you guys realize I'm not using my hip at all on that throw? There are several other throws on that video including Harai Goshi. This is the reason I don't do Judo anymore. To much trolling and too much bickering. For the record anybody that comments on this from now on I want video, rank and experience if you're going to tell me what throw is what or it gets deleted.
Great vid thanks! to everyone else, who the hell cares what they are called. You can call it the super puppy smasher for all i care. Just do the move. What a stupid thing to argue about. Thanks again for the vid!
+kevin s. Exactly what I've been trying to say. On the video it looks like I'm going backwards. If I were to take a different angle You'd see that I was actually moving sideway and forward.
@valhallaetc I'm not trying to be an asshole or anything cause I know this isn't harai goshi or a hip throw even, but the first throw looks more like ashi guruma than osoto gari. Like you said its a foot reap but I thought osoto gari was a leg reap and osotos minor version kosoto gari uses feet. I'm not a keyboard warrior like some other people or anything. I'm just a little confused. I hold no rank or anything like that I just read and study in my spare time alot. Thanks.
I shall lay a bet that you're not off balancing your partner. This is easily addressed with entrance foot work. Probably need a separate video for that. If you shot a video showing me what you are doing, this would probably be the easiest approach.
Ranking means nothing, results do. This video shows a level of skill and I'd expect from a no gi instructor. Being able to throw someone that slowly with that much control is not an easy task. These throws are not that easy to learn. Black Belt is a meaningless buzz word 95% of the time.
yes he can also suplex the shit out of you. watch fedor vs randalman. this is an option but i wouldnt have it as my go 2 position when throwing. you could also look for a switch or sakuraba style rev fig 4.
Did anyone ever think that the throws wouldn't work without a Gi? Unless someone is wearing no clothes in public, the throws will work. Most people wear a jacket anyway which is perfect for it.
The difference is how you control the body. Learning how to work underhooks and clinch is different than grip fighting from distance. If you try to reach for a lapel in a fight, there's a big chance you're eating a knuckle sandwich
I don't cater to females per se (we have a women's kickboxing class). I think that's what most women like about our facility. We have a good percentage of female members.
Not if you know what you're doing. Lock the elbow in place and they can't maneuver around. I have the same question asked seminar after seminar. I believe I have it on another video here on youtube, I just can't remember where it is.
Right. I am being very specific here. Thank you I've been debating on what video I wanted to do next and if you guys want I can explore the variations and choices.

Great stuff by the way.
That first throw is more like harai goshi rather than osoto gari
Exactly what I was looking for. Ima practice this and hopefully use it in my amateur fights (:
imo this has been one of my favorite no-gi judo throws. thank you so much for your uploads.
The hari and osoto do look the same with no gi, and it's cool to see the changes you have to make from gi to no gi, we offten practice no gi and everyone has a small but different no gi set ups and grips good stuff man
Thank you, this is the most useful takedown very tutorial I've seen to date. Ty again
Very good work here. Thank you for posting.

Great instructional! Keep up the good work.
Throwing with that much control is awesome! At full speed using your full speed hip rotation it would devastate!
Yeah good job brother. I know ALL about being hated on and it happens on almost every video I view. I'm looking forward to trying them out tomorrow and thanks!
Great simple, very dominant throws. My only suggestion is for you to step big. This will make the throws even more dominating and easier to execute.
great job!!
you guys did a good job dont worry about the haters most of them dont even train at all just tapout shirt weares that think know know everything but dont even know how to show respect to others

good throw thanks
Yes; shirts, bags, rash guards, shorts....various associated uniforms.
It's perfect
very helpful

Look forward to more vids.
Not a problem; coincidentally we were going over Tai Otoshi the night you asked that question.
You must be in really good shape to do such moves. I grappled recently and i was not succesful using this throws
@rangedat it helps for reference... others like to be technical for the sake of there egos.
If he slips his right arm under the other guys arm as opposed to above it, the other guy's just going to clamp down on it, rendering it useless. The shoulder shrugging movement won't do anything. (Around the 3:00 mark)

Yes, it's a general instruction not a highlight video. I will take this into account for my next throwing video.
You've got the right idea. It's hard for me to explain in the written word. Essentially you never reach backwards throughout the entire process. Your arms are always in front of you. If their heels are on the ground they are not off balance. Did you see the video of my daughter throwing?
Hey, call it what you will, if it gets the job done, it gets the job done.
I see this last throw by fedor, he doit everytime...its a good move, because the opponent already got the back(in Stand)
I don't care for rank or names. does it work? Yes. It's good so keep posting dude
Very cool stuff, I am trying to get into MMA found a great gym close by just waiting on money lol. Holy cow that's a lot

👌👌👌👍👍👍
*edit: apparently youtube won't let me put up the link. I'll ask the owner of the video to put up the response.
Does it take much leg strength to sweep like that? or is it more of just moving the right leg quicker
Grappling ones.
could san shou throws be catagorized as shai jiao. meaning in general no just the bejing style.
Thank you great man! I need to learn a few throws because apparently schools don't consider Jiu Jitsu as extra curricular so I'm gonna have to join wrestling :\

@OVERCAPITALIZE No, you're looking at it two dimensionally. Let's not try getting into the typical Judo naming wars. I even state that in the video.
I am not trying to be arrogant. I just think that if you give people too much detail it can be overwhelming and they will miss the fundamentals. Like you stated the importance of any take down is setup, level change, and penetration. Also, I am a BJJ/judo guy so I am speaking from that perspective. That dude looks like Gabriel Gonzaga
3:18 opening for arm bar.
if you realize, he stuffs any back taking techniques away from him. he leans forward knowing hes going to take his back. unless you want to get a hurnia, your not gunna be able to suplex a guy from that position
Sure, I can make a video on this too. We're just busy moving into our new facility.
i'm good at gi judo throws, but i have no idea how to do it in no gi!
So I just put a video of my daughter throwing me with a hip throw if you look at our new videos.
do u have any shuai jiao san shou throws for mma?
Yeah I'm not getting my opponent off balanced. Today I got the guy's back and I couldn't trip him because he was balanced on both of his feet... :\ And I did see the video! Internet is a funny monster. I believe we're both just pointing out things as a matter of conversation. Not really thinking we're arguing, at least I wasn't. The only thing I'd disagree with you on that last post is the reverse heel hook. You have to have the arm free to be able to maneuver to it.
I don't display personal information online
I know you're not trying to come off as arrogant. I also realize I can't please everybody. I took your comment as constructive. I've got to figure out the balance on too much rhetoric and not enough.
can u help me by answering some martial arts questions
I'll tell you what. If any of you guys out rank the guy who told me what this throw is I'll let you correct me.
370? Wow. Were you the thrower or the thrown?
Great vid thanks!
to everyone else, who the hell cares what they are called. You can call it the super puppy smasher for all i care. Just do the move. What a stupid thing to argue about.
Thanks again for the vid!
by ajj do you mean aikijujutsu?
Except osoto gari is forward/sideway if its backwards its harai goshi or ashi guruma
+kevin s. Exactly what I've been trying to say. On the video it looks like I'm going backwards. If I were to take a different angle You'd see that I was actually moving sideway and forward.
All of them?

I'm the head coach.
@valhallaetc Just google Tony Raven Judoka
yes he can also suplex the shit out of you. watch fedor vs randalman. this is an option but i wouldnt have it as my go 2 position when throwing. you could also look for a switch or sakuraba style rev fig 4.
Did anyone ever think that the throws wouldn't work without a Gi? Unless someone is wearing no clothes in public, the throws will work. Most people wear a jacket anyway which is perfect for it.
regular shirts tear under that type of force and jackets are usually taken off
The difference is how you control the body.
I'm no expert but if we're gonna use japanese I'd say it looks more of a 'harai goshi' than 'osoto gari'. It's a nice throw nevertheless.
Not if you know what you're doing. Lock the elbow in place and they can't maneuver around. I have the same question asked seminar after seminar. I believe I have it on another video here on youtube, I just can't remember where it is.
what is the last throw called?
Soto Makikomi
Can't he take your back on the last throw? that's pretty risky maneuver!
Video*
looks more like harai goshi
Is this a point you really want to discuss?
Right. I am being very specific here. Thank you I've been debating on what video I wanted to do next and if you guys want I can explore the variations and choices.
What state are you in some of Judo clubs teach NO GI Judo now.
