Deck+Dock is better than Switch but the real star of Steam is cloud saves. Hook up a powerful PC to your TV or monitor and go back and forth between portable and couch/desk using cloud saves. Now you really have the best of all worlds.
@@FanTheDeck Please highlight Steam Cloud too. The ability to play the latest games on a console like portable, but also in 4k/120 on a huge screen, with a seamless hassle free transition, is uniquely Steam Deck+PC. The money you put towards a dock could be put towards a PC instead. This is the direction I took and so I feel no need to get the dock. I go from portable to TV via Steam cloud.
So you mean a €400 device, and a €1000 or more pc, is better than a €350 Switch? Go figure. Don’t get me wrong, a Deck is great, and so is a gaming PC and a Deck combined. But at that point, you really do have to compare apples to apples.
The Deck is something completely different than what I though it would be... I purchased it because I'm a retro portable geek and have too many mobile devices in the house. I wanted the deck to replace them all with emulation. But I have yet to play emulated games seriously on the deck so far, I'm playing mainly steam games and have not been bored enough yet to play emulated consoles. I have batocera on an SD card and only booted into it twice so far. Things might change later but for the moment, just plain Steam does it for me and I'm loving it.
Oh I really hope that other retro gamers have the same experience you do. I love retro gaming but I think that modern, retro-styled, indies on Steam should have a lot more attention from the retro community.
I think I got a 512 model and I ordered a 256 lmao I’m not complaining I have like 4 or 5 games and I was expecting to see like 156 or 200 gigs left I have 414 holy shit
As an addition to the desktop controls, I always like to add that I prefer to set the triggers to click (left click to right trigger, right click to left trigger), and to bind the middle mouse click to R1, and the left track pad to act as a scroll wheel. This does several things. 1) The trigger click doesn't drift off when pressed like the track pads do. 2) The middle mouse click is used in Linux to perform a paste action of selected text. I.E. If you highlight text, and center mouse click on a text entry box, it will paste the highlighted text. Very helpful on desktop Linux and in desktop mode on the Deck. 3) Having the scroll wheel bound to the left track pad will let you scroll easily through web pages etc, without having to find the scroll bar or plug in a mouse. I think all of these should be set by default, but that is me.
I ordered my deck during spring sale. Currently skiing in Utah and it’s waiting for me at home 😍😭 I only wanted to comment to say I think it’s really admirable that you promoted other SD channels for seemingly no other reason than being a fan of the deck and the greater community. Keep doing what you’re doing!
I just sent me ROG Ally back because it was too confusing and im not a PC gamer. I want something like a console, where i can buy a big AAA game like COD or EA games or whatever and just click on it snd start playing. No tinkering, no need to adjust anything. Can i do that with the steam deck? I plan on getting the 512GB OLED because i already have a 2TB SSD ready to install. However, if i have tinker and create specific settings for it to be able to play the most demanding games, idk if ill be getting one. Does anyone know if I'd have to do any tinkering in order to play the most demanding games?
My steam deck has not arrived yet but I have asked a few questions on the subreddit and it already seems like one of the most active and helpful communities I've seen
Steam deck was a good fit for me because I wanted to branch out of the console gaming market and dip my toe into the pc gaming market. While saving up for a PC and struggling to find a good cheap ish pre built PC the Steam Deck was announced, after further research I found out how good it was expected to be and the 512gb model was around the budget I was going to save for anyway. And it just saved me a lot of hassle with building your own PC as your first PC or finding a good enough pre-built that wasn't too overpriced for the parts.
The Steam Deck is legit the best gateway to PC gaming since devs can use it as the minimal spec for their games since they'd love that FREE verified status on Steam when consumers want portability and power in compromised harmony, since Nintendo never likes playing catch up with the bigger consoles.
Ive never been able to afford a decent gaming rig and I dont know enough to build my own. Its insane how user friendly the deck is especially with EmuDeck. Its the best purchase ive ever made.
Thank you so much for this video. I am a generational Xbox player with 0 pc experience. My steam Deck Oled just came in yesterday and I am baffled at how much you can do and scared and excited. I appreciate this greatly.
This is a very complete video for those of us whom have been trying to decide between getting the Nintendo Switch Oled vs getting the Steam Deck. Yes, I'd like to have the handheld with the huge library of games, possibilities for emulation, huge retro collection, and sounds great! Besides, I already played more than enough Mario, Zelda and other Nintendo titles. It's time to move forward.
I bought the Tomtoc bag thanks to your videos and I couldn't be happier. It's a GREAT bag, holds all of my accessories well, looks great... can't speak any more highly about it. Thank you.
I'm waiting for my base model to arrive. For me the base model with a 512 GB SD-card bought on Blackfriday sale around $60 and the option to upgrade in the future seemed like the best deal!

I bought thw original 512gb, anti reflective model, loved it. So decided to pick up the 512gb oled model yesterday. On order now. Also, just as a side note. The Steam Deck is also the ultimate steam link device. I use it all the time.
The thing I like best about Steam Deck is the controller experience. Withe the ease and precision of control and the comfortable grip, I've been able to finish games I shelved for years 'cause I couldn't get past one spot or another. It's like a cybernetic enhancement to gameplay. ;^)
One thing I don't see anyone mention is that quality control issues definitely exist with the Steam Deck. Most are fine, but I have already had to return 2. The first one I got had a sticky right trigger, and the second one had the worst backlight bleed on any screen I have ever had. Just went to order my third, and now there are reservations again because the 64gb model is out of stock. Keep in mind your deck almost certainly will have some level of backlight bleed, and may have other issues as well. It is very important to test as much as possible within the 2 week return window to make sure everything works.
Unfortunately, the Valve Index has suffered quality control issues it's entire life as well, ranging from dying cables and drifting sticks to dying base stations and exploding straps... They have proven that they will replace almost any defective hardware, even out of warranty in many cases. I imagine the steam deck is the same. Idk why their QC is so bad, but atleast they don't screw you over.
I bought the 64GB model Steam Deck($400) and a 1TB Micron 2230 SSD ($240). While the 2230 drives do cost a lot more than the larger sized drives this was a good deal in my opinion, as I got a Steam Deck and a 1TB drive for the price of the 512GB model.. I didn't want the Anti Glare screen the colors look washed out and I'm never going to play my Steam Deck outside the house.

I’m late to the party but ordered one yesterday. Due to the release of the oled model the lcd models are dirt cheap. Got a 512 in like new condition for 275. The only reason I really wanted one was purely so I could emulate the Star Wars rogue squadron games on a handheld without having issues. I’m only just finding out how stupidly versatile this thing is. My series x is my primary system and I’ve got an old gaming laptop with a 1050 in it which is my old emulation station but nowhere near as portable. I’m so excited to get it and mess around.
Well I'm even later haha since I just got one yesterday. Same exact model (512) on sale for $336 out the door. So far it's been,,,,, intimidating hence the reason I'm here watching this vid.
You want the matte anti glare screen but dont want to buy the 512gb model. Get a Matte Screen protector and it does the very same thing. Great video. You are the biggest reason why I am buying a stream deck.
Thank you so much for this video, looking to get a steam deck in the near future and all of this info will be so useful to me once I do My plan though is to not just use my deck as a handheld game console but also as a desktop replacement with a keyboard and mouse. Managed to find a couple of videos on the topic so far but I'd love your take on it too
So I think the security right now is "fine". I think the main thing is that their _priority_ is not security so they may have dependencies that take them some time to update. It's not insecure, you just have to be more aware, but you sound like you would absolutely fit in that camp. Hope that makes sense and good luck! (And thank you!!!)
Didnt know who you were man but im into tech and ive been buying game stuff lately and for some reason i always find myself on your channel. I finally gave in and clicked subscribe and ill come here first going forward. Keep up the good work your videos are both entertaining and informative and I hope you kill it in the youtube world. Thanks for doing this video. I ordered a steam deck. I figure why not preemptively learn some tips and tricks. This led me to your channel. Super helpful, man! Appreciate it!
Just found your channel and I am blown away by this guide! Saving for a steam deck myself and I feel more confident about buying base model thank you 😊 I’ll just slap a 1TB SD and call it a day!!!
It's a tiny Linux box with all the tweaks that comes with. Upgrading your HDD is NOT difficult. Actually, looking forward, upgrading all the hardware won't be difficult as compatible hardware becomes available. Game library is infinite. As I said, it's a Linux box. It does all the linux things. The steam menus to control your hardware are fast, intuitive, and effective. I have a gaming PC and 4 consoles that have been basically ignored for the months that I've had the steam deck. You can even play that wizard game on it. Runs great.
@@cubanallstars81 I don't see any glare but I usually use it in the same place, sitting at my PC. Much of the time I'm connected to my 27" monitor. I know that defeats the purpose of owning a hand held gaming unit and I bought it for doctor's office waiting rooms but haven't used it for that yet. I did play some Resident Evil 4 from my sofa and experienced no glare. To give you an answer I turned it on and started playing Lego The Hobbit. I saw some glare while on the desktop but not in the game. Sorry I couldn't give you a better answer.
i don't want or need a deck. But thanks for trying to get people so excited about steam input. All the deck configurations are making my Steam Controller life so much better. :D
Steam deck is better than my oled switch, ps5, or gaming laptop. Playing all the games I want wherever I want is amazing. It runs games so beautifully. I have never been so happy with any purchase. Not even my bmw. I cannot tell you guys enough, go BUY A DECK!!!!!
Basically the only thing stopping me from getting a deck at this point is either GOG and Gamepass getting support in SteamOS or being able to seamlessly dual boot windows with similar performance to SteamOS
I play most of my games on Steam. I had bought Uncharted last year and it wouldn’t play on my gaming laptop. I got my money back. There was at least one other game that wouldn’t play on my laptop so I’ve been a bit gun shy when buying games, but I bought Hogwarts Legacy and it did play fine. I have The Last of Us on preorder and have been nervous that it won’t play so I ordered a Steam Deck and it’s arriving today along with the hub 🤗 I’ll repurchase Uncharted eventually too.
Honestly I think the steam cloud ppl need to chill, half the comments make it seem like you need a gaming PC if you get a steam deck. NO I personally say the steam deck is the best option to bring console players (me) to PC. I've been dabbing into cloud gaming via xcloud and Nvidia but I kept seeing the steam deck and a few months later I've bought a bunch of games on steam and am now building a PC. This is the ideal gaming starter PC you buy 1 thing monitor/pwrsply/ram/mthrbrd/gpu all in one@400$ and gtg everyone has a TV if they want to try a bigger screen and it can run anything smoothly on any size screen at 1080p. I just see too many of y'all going on about it's pairing with a PC... No shit lol stop scaring other joystick jockeys away this is amazing standalone
Oh and if you are a Xbox or playstation guy,I have xcloud in my app Library and can seamlessly go from my console to steam deck or my phone or my fridge
I just got mine last Friday with the dock, I haven't done much with it other than take it out of the case 😅 been too busy with life. Wish I was still a teenager in high school sometimes! I do plan to upgrade the internal storage to 1tb (I got the 64gb version), but for now I'm good with a 512gb micro SD card.
So I don't want to play triple A titles. I want to play older games, emulate retro games on it, and play indie games. Am I fine to do the 64gb model with an external sd card, or should I just spend more on one of the better models? If so, which model? I don't mind saving and getting the big storage one
Ive been on xbox always but i was thinking about getting a ps5 because i missed out on some great games like spiderman god of war last of us to name a few . I was gonna make the purchase and then i saw a steam deck and was intruiged . Can i really play forza and spiderman on the same console anywhere. Sold!! waiting for delivery 😊😊😊
Just ordered my 512GB model today. Looking forward to emulating some of my old faves and playing through my PC backlog on it while I relax away from the computer desk
I have a sweet ass gaming pc but dammit am I excited for my steam deck to get here…and almost 3x as excited to be able to fool around with Linux gaming.
Why am I watching this?? I already have one 😂 I guess it's that exciting to me still. I've been watching your channel since you had less than 200 subs while saving up for one of my own. Now I love watching your update videos
Thank you this has been very helpful in my decision on either getting a a Nintendo switch or a steam deck. My follow-up question is is the price for the games is the same as in-store purchase.
@ChimpPunck typically they are around the same price. Although there definitely are situations where certain digital games are cheaper and certain physical games are. I'm not sure what platform you would buy games on, but the steam summer sale starts in a couple of days! There are also some reliable secondhand sites like ggdeals and isthereanydeal that will tell you the all-time low price of a game and the cheapest place you can get it (digitally). That way, you can decide if the game is worth that price or if it will go lower soon! :)
If you are just buying from steam, then they'll usually sell for their regular retail price that the publisher has set for them. Luckily, Steam does really great sales and there is a really big one coming up this week. Great way to save on games. Alternatively, you can always check official keyshops by checking out a game you are interested in on ggdeals. Great place to see where you can get a steam key for a good price. Just stay way from unofficial stores if you are a pc gaming beginner. They usually are fine but they are sketchy.

Thanks nan! And yeah Matte screen protector is def a good idea
“Stream deck”
Thanks for this! There are several "X things to know/do with your new deck", but very few have turned out to be this informative and helpful.
Thank you so much for this video, looking to get a steam deck in the near future and all of this info will be so useful to me once I do
My plan though is to not just use my deck as a handheld game console but also as a desktop replacement with a keyboard and mouse.
@@FanTheDeck Alright! Thank yiu for that
10:41 Picross 3d!!! What a great title, definitely gonna get it running on my deck
Ordered mine from Amazon.. It's coming tomorrow and I've been watching Aaalll the videos related to it on UA-cam.
Sincerely- An aging gamer with a new steam deck.
Thanks for the kind words Michael! Glad to hear you're enjoying the channel and glad the Steam Deck has brought you enjoyment too!
Brilliant overview, many thanks! Also thanks for tip on running using Edge of joystick setting that really helpful.
Thanks for doing this video. I ordered a steam deck. I figure why not preemptively learn some tips and tricks. This led me to your channel. Super helpful, man! Appreciate it!
I've got the 64gb and purchased a 256gb
I got to say I love it. I've tried windows on it as Wel but I think it's not quite ready yet for steam deck
I need to try Windows again but it definitely wasn't ready
Just found your channel and I am blown away by this guide! Saving for a steam deck myself and I feel more confident about buying base model thank you 😊 I’ll just slap a 1TB SD and call it a day!!!
Just got 1 yesterday, great device 👍
The steam deck is the only console/pc i will wholeheartedly reccomend to the majority of gamers. Its a dream come true.
FINALLY!!! A SIMPLE REVIEW!!! Thank you!!!
Loved your camouflage delivery lol
It's a tiny Linux box with all the tweaks that comes with. Upgrading your HDD is NOT difficult. Actually, looking forward, upgrading all the hardware won't be difficult as compatible hardware becomes available. Game library is infinite. As I said, it's a Linux box. It does all the linux things. The steam menus to control your hardware are fast, intuitive, and effective. I have a gaming PC and 4 consoles that have been basically ignored for the months that I've had the steam deck. You can even play that wizard game on it. Runs great.
I upgraded my 64GB Deck to 512GB for roughly $60.00. A savings of about $200.00 over the 512GB model. My games run perfectly from a 1TB SD card.
Beaiutiful!
How about the screen glare though? The etched glass is the thing that draws me to the 512GB…
Which Sd card did you buy?
@@Aeyolev If you're asking me I bought the Lexar PLAY 1TB microSDXC UHS-I-Card from Amazon.
I'm getting a steam deck as a birthday gift December 7 this is really useful wish me a happy birthday!
What FPS are you playing at 0:18 seconds? Thanks
Cultic 👍🏼
Bought it today with a 20% discount. Had some vacation money left unspend and went for it. Hope it's worth it haha!
Unfortunately for me steam deck isn't available in my country but I'm still really interested in it and in steam OS
Do you have any plans to get any other handheld PC while you wait?
Nah, I'm too broke and busy. Besides, I'm saving up for a potential steam deck 2. I just want a solid HD 60fps machine
@@poyobotyahoo7494 That makes sense!
I cannot wait to get my deck! I CANNOT WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ❤❤❤
Yeaaaaah baby that’s what I have been waiting for 🤩
Let's go!
i don't want or need a deck. But thanks for trying to get people so excited about steam input. All the deck configurations are making my Steam Controller life so much better. :D
Love my steam deck one of my favourite gaming purchases in a while!
Has anybody tried the smaller model steam deck with an anti-glare screen protector? If so, how does it look?
Navy Camo Guile was always my go to color in MVC2
Twins!!!!
Nice video!! What game are you playing at 6:26?
ordered my steamdeck on tue , was here by friday regular delivery
Basically the only thing stopping me from getting a deck at this point is either GOG and Gamepass getting support in SteamOS or being able to seamlessly dual boot windows with similar performance to SteamOS
GOG is p decent with Heroic Launcher but yeah we need Gamepass ASAP
@@FanTheDeck yeah I commented before I finished the video so I didn't know about Heroic. Definitely considering one more seriously now.
No need to add Windows when there's already a full Linux OS
I don't have a "Model/Serial Numbers" link in my system settings :{
Are you on Beta?
@@FanTheDeck stable.. also your storage is 8 gigs smaller than mine did you do something with your partitions or just a different hd?
@6:18 What is the name & brand of that yellow shell???
I play most of my games on Steam. I had bought Uncharted last year and it wouldn’t play on my gaming laptop. I got my money back. There was at least one other game that wouldn’t play on my laptop so I’ve been a bit gun shy when buying games, but I bought Hogwarts Legacy and it did play fine.
I have The Last of Us on preorder and have been nervous that it won’t play so I ordered a Steam Deck and it’s arriving today along with the hub 🤗
I’ll repurchase Uncharted eventually too.
Noice!
I looking get a steam deck what version do you guys recommend for my first one
The 256 gb one
Also for sure buy the cheapest one install an SSD yourself literally took less then 10 minutes
I'm lucky, I've got my steam deck and love it to bits
It's really the best
I just got mine last Friday with the dock, I haven't done much with it other than take it out of the case 😅 been too busy with life. Wish I was still a teenager in high school sometimes! I do plan to upgrade the internal storage to 1tb (I got the 64gb version), but for now I'm good with a 512gb micro SD card.
So I don't want to play triple A titles. I want to play older games, emulate retro games on it, and play indie games. Am I fine to do the 64gb model with an external sd card, or should I just spend more on one of the better models? If so, which model? I don't mind saving and getting the big storage one
You will be fine with the 64 gb
Can somebody please tell me what game he’s playing at 1:32 please?
Jitsu Squad
@@FanTheDeck thanks man!!!
Love the music you chose this video, really adds to the production. Could you please include or share links/titles of the tracks you used?
Darude Sandstorm
Ive been on xbox always but i was thinking about getting a ps5 because i missed out on some great games like spiderman god of war last of us to name a few . I was gonna make the purchase and then i saw a steam deck and was intruiged . Can i really play forza and spiderman on the same console anywhere. Sold!! waiting for delivery 😊😊😊
This video it's dope, thanks for all the resources, I will get my Deck tomorrow bad luck cause it's Monday lol
Just ordered my 512GB model today. Looking forward to emulating some of my old faves and playing through my PC backlog on it while I relax away from the computer desk
My mans was playing God Hand! Such an underrated game and hardly anyone talks about it lol
5:29 time to release an updated steam controller Valve!
I have a sweet ass gaming pc but dammit am I excited for my steam deck to get here…and almost 3x as excited to be able to fool around with Linux gaming.
i want black and white 2 on steam deck , that game is made for it
I have fond memories of watching my friends play B&W and figure out all the dumb stuff you could do.
Why am I watching this?? I already have one 😂 I guess it's that exciting to me still. I've been watching your channel since you had less than 200 subs while saving up for one of my own. Now I love watching your update videos
That navy camo reminds me of the blue camo neo geo color pocket I had as a kid. I might have to get that skin when I buy the kill switch now
I didn't know this was a thing! It's beautiful!!
My number one question is can I get the steam deck and play these games completely offline?
As long as it isn't an online game. Super convenient for traveling!
If it's an offline game except for cloud saves, will it just save locally until you get back to an Internet connection?
Just bought myself a steam deck, thanks man. As a self-employed person. This is one of my best investments
One thing to note is JSAUX dock allows room for cases versus the official steam deck dock is fitted for the steam deck out of the box. So I've heard.
Emulation on the steam deck is incredible! Loving mine !!
same!
Everything I need to know is when will it be for sale in new Zealand
Ugh, wish I knew too
Now?
I love my deck!!!!!! Ace Combat 7 runs very well on the deck !!!
🔥🔥🔥 That's sick
Love that digi cami skin! Thanks for this video doing allot of research before I buy!
Hey I have Astro a50 gaming headset and base station I’m having trouble with mic quality and sound quality while using it on the steam deck docked can anyone help me?
Wow, what a mouth full. Amazing tips.
Thanks Ken! I tried my best 💪🏼
