.....well done David!....sounded like one of those typical quick jobs that ended up going down a rabbit hole! I had that recently when I tracked down an oil leak coming from the old redundant X1/9 mechanical fuel pump. The previous owner had installed an electric fuel pump but left the old mechanical one on the engine block. Fitting the blank plate turned into a faff because the new gasket didn't quite cover the hole, then I needed additional washers that I didn't have to space off the nuts as the bolts weren't fully threaded....it goes on! Still, all done now! Gaz.
Sounds like the crunch moment is still to come...best of luck with that! Sounds like a two cups of tea and a chunk of Xmas cake job to me...bash on and so forth...
