Today I drive a rather rare Volvo - an XC70 equipped with the six cylinder T6 engine - but what makes it special, and is it enough to make this a car worth buying?

Hey there! That is some really entertaining stuff you making mate! I was wasted after long working day,but couldn't resist to watch your video till the very end! Respect! Now,as for that Volvo. I live in Finland and always had that weak spot on these XC's. They look solid, very well put together and practical at the same time. Add that power, and the package becomes very tempting. About 6 years ago I had the chance to test drive one of these T6s for a weekend. I am a spirited driver and although on my 49s I prefer relaxing driving most of the time,I do like to play with the steering sometimes too. That car does not inspire drivers like me. Although on a moderately twisty roads it feels alright, sharp maneuvers are something the car hates to do. Any time I sharply move the steering,I could feel the heavy 6 cylinder sitting above the front axle. Massive torque steer on wet, numb steering, unbalanced suspension and gearbox. My previous car was E39 528 and I wanted to go for something different and better, but even the E39 was about 6 years older,it felt universe ahead of that Volvo in terms of handling, road feel and overall put together. Sadly. Good, bit just not good enough.
"Every single birthday I have, wooden interiors become a bit more appealing" 😂😂 couldn't have said it better myself
I think I want to cut straight to it and buy a Morgan for good. However I'm afraid it may break down way quicker than I will 😅
the older one gets, the more one misses the morning wood...
Watching this in my broken down V70 D5 waiting for the AA. 😂
Haha, good luck mate!
@@volvo09Thanks! He's here now. Broken parking brake motor. Apparently it's quite a common fault.
What went wrong????
@AWMJoeyjoejoe did the AA guy diagnose the issue straight away using the onboard computer but still insisted on looking in the engine bay, losing a few screws around the engine, then taking a wheel off to put it back on again, before saying it needs to go to a garage to be fixed?
@@Spenny909I was actually very impressed. He arrived within half an hour, knew immediately what had happened, removed the dodgy parking brake actuator, wound back the caliper and sent me on my way. It's going for its MOT and service on Monday so I'll just get them to stick a new actuator on it then. First time I've ever used the AA but like I said, I was impressed.
I having watched your video of your Accountants XC70.
I bought a XC70 D5 SE Sport, auto with AWD 2008 with 18,000 miles on the clock, in Oct 2023.
I’ve subsequently had her tinted and Polestar installed.
Love it.
18,000 miles? Wow! What a find!
@@AWMJoeyjoejoe
Yeah 👍🏻 I ended up paying £12k but love it.
@@YorkshiremadmickCan I ask where you got the Polestar map done? I've been scouring the internet trying to find out but no one seems to offer it anymore.
@@AWMJoeyjoejoe Various Volvo dealers keep offering, keep an eye out or ring one !
If You MUST Have a Volvo, Do It Right. And buy a 240 😁
240 740 940 are real volvos
That’s the one!
Facts
And VQ swap it.
@volvo09 the 850 and v70 are proper volvo too, just not rwd, still very stout build quality and lasting a lot better than many 90s and early 2000s cars
I’ve had my XC70 for 4 years now and it’s been a fantastic all rounder and reliable. I do get funny looks being in my 20’s driving a big Volvo estate but who cares!
Get the same odd looks in a 97' V70r, couldn't care less!
love a volvo on stilts, they always seem cool
If UA-cam shuts down one day Jay will be the best car salesman 😂. Honestly this channel is not just a car review channel every time i click of a video it feels like one of your mates bought a new car and is not just him telling you about his car, it feels more like a good chat and driving pleasure. Keep up doing you pal sending love for Cyprus
Well put 👍
Sending love to Cyprus myself - I made a few videos there earlier this year with PCVC, a lovely bunch
This car single handedly proves that SUVs are not necessary
"Necessary" has not been a watchword of either the car industry or the buying public for a very long time sadly. If we drove what was necessary, the vast majority would be in Fiestas or similar.
The 240 proved that.
Oh my god Jay you have given me a semi here.
Genuinely want one of these so so much. The Japanese imports are beautiful, especially with walnut on tan interior.
I missed out on a mint, brown 2014 D5 manual with with walnut interior on 212k miles for £1,700 last week and I’m still pissed about it. SB14 SPV if anyone cares 😭
@@9wowable i recently missed out on a first gen volvo c70 t5… it was a very beautiful car
I think this is the best car you have ever reviewed! I plan on getting one in the new year!
I've had two XC70s it's such a great car very practical - huge boot (bigger than Audi A6 Merc E-Class and even the new V90 XC). I'm loathed to part with it. Sure it 'leans' a bit but you can hustle it a bit over lumpy ground due to that long suspension travel. Good breaks and those seats are really comfortable on long journey's.
The seats man, just wonderful
I actually want one of these at some point.
I have a Volvo S80 3.2. Brilliant car.
It is a twin-scroll turbo as well :-). The car is very nose heavy and understeers relentlessly, but it has fantastic power. The wheels look amazing on the car.
In Norway, the definition of an SUV is any car taller than an xc70!
Morning James. I have a 2011 XC70 3.2 with 138,000 km. As in the UK these cars are keepers. I grew up on a couple of Ford 351 V8s but nowadays really enjoy the 3.2. My wife has an XC60 3.0 turbo which absolutely flys - and for that reason I enjoy my 3.2 as the power is solid without the need to enjoy myself too much. Really enjoy your work!!! 😀😀
Love my 09 XC70 T6. Everything mentioned here is pretty spot on too from comfort, MPG, resale, etc. Great job 👍
I've had a XC70 2006 D5, XC70 2009 3.2 and a 2016 D5 which was remapped, sadly a deer met its forever home on the bumper and wrote it off. Now I have a V90 cc D5
I remember reading Volvo Xc60s haven’t got a fatal accident to their drivers yet . When I think of a proper Volvo I think pre-China owned and even pre-Ford Volvo cars ie a Volvo XC70 early 2000s proper tank of a car
Fantastic review - it's always great to see Volvos featured on your channel. My first and current Volvo, a lowly 2014 V40 T4 hatchback, has given me an appreciation of Volvos of that era. Yes is may be a typical 1.6 litre 4 cylinder like well, most other cars in its class, but it certainly moves considering there are two engine specifications above it. It also has those luxurious leather seats, which I agree, are almost certainly best-in-class. Mine also has the same digital dash as the XC70 in your video here and it gives you everything you need, and nothing you don't. I'm considering upgrading to a V60 T5 or T6 (if I can get my hands on one) at some point in the near future.
We have a 2015 d5 version your friend had in previous video. I've never regretted buying it because in terms of practical reliability it has been great. I wanted a l322 range rover 3.6 but think this was the sensible choice.
Hi James, thank you so much for this review, this really hit very close to the heart! We had a black XC70 T6 Polestar with my parents, bought new in 2013, very shortly before I left home. This was the last car that me and my dad specced together and a very special spec it was! Every time I visited, I wanted to drive to places, just to enjoy it. Totally agree with all your points. To this day it's probably still my favourite car. I was very sad when my dad got wowed by a V90 of the next generation and sold the 70, the new one being a major letdown. I still have a lot of pictures of the XC70 and they bring up a lot of memories! Last real Volvo. Thanks again.
HubNut very recently uploaded a drive in a XC60 and then this. My double daily dose of Volvo.
I had an S50, V60, and XC60 Redesign. The motor is fantastic.
One of these would be my dad's dream car if they were still made. He always wanted one, but most of them being over 10 years old has put him off. I liked these too.
Love my V70 D5, even more so because its a manual with polestar tune, 230bhp and 50mpg, kids love the integrated dvd screens and the car also has integrated booster seats, Volvo knew what they were doing with family cars!
i bought one of these out of the blue when i needed a family hauler years ago. a 08 d5, this thing has turned out to be the best family hauler we have ever had.. i am a merc/bmw dude, so the comparison is fun for a nerd like me.
the volvo is not a bmw, its not a drivers car.. its a users car, when you start shoveling kids, dogs, luggage and what not, you constantly realise how well they thought of something that makes the car more usable,
i have never had a car, that filters out what ever its driving on, on 18" tires it barely feels the difference when you drive from tarmac on to a gravel road. where i live everything is covered with ice at least half the year, with chainmarks in it. while other cars feel like they are being shaken apart, the old tank does not care
its REALLY capable in snow.. surprisingly so, mine sees alot of it, and the cladded lowerpart ables you to drag the sills and lower part of the doors through it w/o having to think about paint.
its is based on a for platform, that is true, all car nerds have heard the stories of how both saab and volvo tended to modifie everything ford and gm forced them to use so much that they ended up saving no money.. that you can see on those p3's, just look at the weight difference between a xc70 and a mondeo wagon. mine weights 1940kg with less than 1/4 tank.
i did not plan to own this car for long, i just needed it to fill in between cars, i want to have new ish cars for this job, but i still have the old tank, and will probably do so for at least 1-2 years
I have a P3 V70 D5. Hands down the best car I've ever owned. Had it for nearly 10 years now, and it was 2 when I bought it. 93K, overall average 46.8 mpg, with 73 on a run, 1000 miles on a full tank. 6 speed manual, 215 bhp and two stage turbo. I didn't consider the XC - more to go wrong. The T6 has a chain driven gearbox.
I had a pet ex main dealer mechanic who looked after it until age and arthritis got the better of him. He didn't like the chain driven box. The service manager at one main dealer said leave the Tiptronic boxes alone, they can dump themselves at 100K and it was 4-5 grand for a rebuild. Looked at a V90. Again, different main dealer said no, stick with what you have - far less to go wrong. So I intend to drive it or myself into the ground. The V90 has 2/3 the cargo volume of the V70, and waaaay less than my old 740s, and the horrid touch screen for everything.
Volvo owner for over 40 years, and a nice T5 ragtop for the sunshine.
Reminds me of the Allroad Audi A6 (as you mentioned ) only the Volvo isn't an absolute dog!
Except Volvos are relaiable. Check average milage for example
And more importantly Subaru Outback.
The og allroad was a car ahead of it's time, now we wish we could get a car that only has 3 major issues (two of which can be avoided can be avoided if you go for the right version). Also as much as I like the xc70 the capabilities and hardware of the original allroad (including low range on the manuals) are rather impressive, supposedly it's the only non suv that has completed a land rover off road course.
No matter how anyone tries to argue ....post 2014 4 cylinder pandemic is absurd ....imagine spending 100k on a 4 cylinder xc 90
A few people have used the S80/XC90 V8 in these, a Yamaha design apparently. If I was younger I might be tempted to do a similar conversion. A factor to consider with these cars of course is ULEZ compliance, many of the T6 imports are fine. My D5 is registered for the ULEZ zone "just in case" but I have not been billed for it. (Though I have driven around the perimeter). Certainly not a traditional driver's car, the feedback is not on the same level as a light car with stiff suspension. I have had mine a while now, just a D5 automatic , parked amongst later SUVs it is positively elegant looking. They are a complex car, and getting old, I try to stay ahead of maintenance, IE to make the car better this year than it was last year. Passengers always praise the car for comfort. To put the performance into perspective, an old school 3 litre Capri (manual) could not beat this lazy arse diesel automatic to 60mph and would be spanked for top speed too.
After more than 10 years since it's introduction a well speced bitdi a6 allroad c6 is still for me the best all round car. The amount of bases these off road estates have covered is astonishing. Also, according to audi, the a6 allroad had more affluent drivers than the a8 and even the r8, something to be said about the allroad 's inconspicuous nature
I was lucky 18 months ago to stumble across a 2016 model with a D5 in black 6 miles away from my house with 56K on the clock, at the time I was searching around and looking for XC 60s And felt deflated about the condition and space when looking at the hundred on the used market because they were primarily family wagons and ex-motorbility vehicles with it being the latest one made the LCD display and satnav is usable. The 220 hp is amazing for towing a caravan and if I play nice it will do 40 - 45 MPG on longer runs?
It’s almost a unicorn, my love for it comes from seeing them as roads policing cars and paramedics vehicles and realising how capable and durable they were during their time in service, luckily mine was privately owned and hadn’t had a particularly hard life
Well done, James for featuring a great car , possibly upping the values on the used market as they become scarce 😂😂
Back in 2019, I picked up a 2018 Volvo V60 Cross Country. I got it because I couldn't find a good example of an XC70 within my price range. The V60 is a very good car, but it is still a poor substitute for the XC70, mainly due to the size. I really regret not paying the premium and getting the bigger car.
Now this is a rare breed of Volvo. A T6 XC70. You don't see these everyday. What an awesome car.
I was unaware of the T6, the T5 yeah! Definitely.
But also that number plate. Very cool.
Great video. Good car. My V50 T5 AWD Man is great and if looked after, reliable, with a hint of mischief thrown in.
What's the milage on yours? I find my FWD 2005 quite garbage tbh, 22000 Swedish miles (137000 Queens miles) on mine.
Driveshafts to name one (sorted 2007 and on), ALL chassis bushes perish around the milage (275 HP 450Nm upgrade of course helps killing the engine/gearbox bushes) . CEM-box is genuinly positioned by a pre-schooler. Drivetrain is nice though.
@@aquinamedia4508 About 140,000. Not cheap to maintain though but looked after and pampered early in its life. Had the suspension bush issues and arms etc and not cheap to keep up to spec. Just like the sleeper element. I know it's not fast by today's standards but still ok. I bet yours is nice with the upgrade.
Lovely car and so comfortable to drive. I borrowed a friends one for two weeks years ago. The T6 is a silky smooth motor and gives mote than enough power. Fuel economy was terrible however, getting me at best 14-16 L/100 in light short trip driving around town! And it only drank premium fuel. That said, I would seriously consider buying one today. Unlike modern cars, The T6 is NOT a direct injection design, meaning carbon buildup is a non issue and long term lifespan is much more assured. And Volvos from this era were still well built, using good materials and outstanding rust protection. With and average amount of care one of these should last for 100’s of thousands of KM.
Looks amazing (and well edited btw).
Only reason I parted with mine was the gearbox went at 158 miles. To sort the gearbox out was more than its value, not that the value was very high. Nothing quite like them, wish something as similar was still made.
That was a really good review. Quite a nice car, not surprised that they have a following
"High Performance Sound" is an upgrade from the basic stereo indeed! There's another tier above that though I can't remember what it's called.
That car is cool, end of discussion
ah yes the Volvo XC70, nature's only rival to the Subaru Outback.
Given that V/XC70 is basically a S80 with a wagon body, I'm really wondering would that 4.4 v8 fit in there... Would be really cool in a XC70
It fits, there's actually a video on youtube, where somebody has done it. If I remember correctly it was in Czechia and in collaboration with Vdash (unofficial volvo programming software suite).
Absolutely it would and I'd love to make one
That wood trim does look nice
Friend sold his XC70 of this generation recently. He drove it for 500.000kms from new, what replaced it? A V90 Cross Country of course. Lovely things these
I currently have a very clean low miles P2 XC70, a fishing truck and winter weapon. Also have a XC60 D5 R Design with all the buttons. If you want cool you buy P2 the last of the Swedish built cars before Ford started meddling. That said the appeal of the 3.0 litre engine appeals a lot
SERIOUS SHIRT THERE MATE!!!!❤
It’s a great car. I’d love to own one, but they are very expensive here in the Netherlands. Not only to buy (a decent one will cost at least 25000 euro), but the tax, insurance, fuel and maintenance costs are significantly higher than for a brand new car. I did a quick calculation and a car like this costs 1000 euro per month to drive. So I think I will keep dreaming :)
Theses are less comfortable in seating and bump absorption on the road. Kinda small inside for the size of the vehicle too. For a Volvo I expected more like skoda Superb room. I’d still take a discovery over the XC cars and we’ve had 3 P3 XC70 and 2 P3 XC70.
I do, however, love the low end torque of the D5 motors. Fantastic for towing, overtaking and just slotting into gaps in the traffic. Surprisingly good economy in the P3 too considering it’s a 2 ton lump.
I love wood in cars. I viewed a 996 C4s that was a Porsche dealer owners personal car and it had so much wood inside it. I had never seen a 996 with wood trim. I was seriously jealous of it. It would of looked amazing in my 996 turbo cab
Wood trim in sports cars needs to be more of a thing
He’s retrofitted the TFT 2014 onwards instruments.
I have had quite a few volvos, including the facelifted xc70 d5. I miss that car, towing, getting across a field when needed, and demolishing motorway miles. But it alway felt a bit vague and never ever returned more than 37 mpg, and I only got that once. One thing I noted across the various models, the P3 platform was more modern, and there are more features, but the P2 just seemed more solid. And I'm sure someone will be along to correct me and state that the 240s and 850s were better than any if those!
Very nice. A travelling armchair with a huge rucksack on its back.
Had two of these first I did 270k miles second only 148k great cars
Good to know what the owner did with the wood. I kept thinking man that looks nice
Super cool car. Prefer it to most super cars. Major reliability issues with that gearbox unfortunately
@@cool_training_tips I thought the Volvo auto box was one of the better ones? Can you please explain? I'm interested in getting one
@@CJD1984I had an immaculate C70 D5 and the gearbox failed at 77k with over £2k for a rebuild. Had V50 D5 with same gearbox that failed at 118k.
A mate had a V60 D4 and drove to 150k with no issues!
I wouldn’t have another Volvo auto.
I’m a fellow v50 owner, manual :D
I heard the Geartronic is as good as any other from the era, maybe a bit more reliable but any Powershift is powershit
@@CJD1984yes had a V70 auto from this generation and the gearbox failed at 140k. Had a fairly easy life too. Id have another if it was a manual though
I always go to bed at night wondering if I maybe should have just bought a T5/T6 Volvo... feels like a mistake I'll never let go.
Anno t8 or b5d your point of doing it right relates to many cars were many customers done it wrong.
For instance the f10 520d ffs a 1 series has a 20d in it
I have a 2016 XC70 diesel and it us ULEZ compliant (I live right on the London Boundary) but I believe it is because they upgraded the engine to a tier 6 engine a year or 2 before phasing out the car.? It is a great car though I dont use it that much (1700 miles in last 6 months) as work from home .However it is frankly probably the last proper car I will have till I get carried out in a box .its only done 63k miles .One thing I would say is that its cross country ability(like all cars) is dependent on the right tyres ,and mine for instance are for tarmac and frankly useless anywhere else.
Re the test car I did think it looked raised ,and frankly the upgrades make it look fantastic (esp the wood and lifts) .The great thing about these cars is that they are pretty classless, and you are far more likely to be let out at a junction than if driving an Audi or BMW!
The real bugbear of the Ford era P3 cars is the dismal Group parts bin electronics hidden about the body - just done the NSR door lock on my 2014 V60, and the OSF front is logging faults so that'll need doing.
Ref the P2 V70R AWD - I had one for 8 years, and it was utterly bombproof. The steering was actually pretty good but you had to be driving the door handles off it to get any real feedback. 4C suspension I found mostly pointless - comfort was fine 99% of the time, sport was too crashy, advanced was just 'suspension off' mode. Rarely touched it, and then a shock went and I was presented with a gigantic bill.
I am seriously considering buying one of these or something similar very soon. Either this or an outback or forester or allroad. Very interested to hear your thoughts!
Very reliable cars the P3s. Coming from the volvo community here in russia, i don't know of anyone who's dissatisfied with them. The only thing is that if, say, you have to take the engine apart, it's properly expensive, but happens rarely. Gotta go for the best one you can afford, like with most things. Bear in mind, volvo interiors are not the best in terms of quality, with age everything starts making noises, and these cars are getting on a bit now.
A much better proposition is a late V70 D5 AWD. With bigger intercooler, intake, remap, will do 330hp and tons of torque.
I agree that the t6 is the way to go, but the high tax band is somewhat off putting. Ulez has made the excellent diesels redundant too
12:45 dangit I can relate with that James. I used to love carbon and metal trim on cars. But I don't know when it started (I think I have one of your video review to blame for that, probably either the Brooklands or the Vantage V550) I thought 'Eh, wood and leather interior is a better combo anyway than carbon and alcantara'. I was disappointed when Aston no longer offered ash trim for DB12. But at least they do in new Vanquish and oh it's just so good-looking.
I'm 31 going on 32 btw so maybe I'm old now.
I have a 2011 D5, also black, but on 18" wheels. The moment this video started I noticed the awesome stance and ride height of the car.
But since I dont have the drive mode selector I'm curious how my car would drive with this lift kit.
And those Erakir wheels, they just look fantastic dont they.
Good car. If you don't need the power or the 4 wheel drive bit (accompanied by the potentially troublesome Haldex rear axle, shared with some Landrovers) then the standard V70 D5 (250k to 300k miles, anyway), engine is the way to go.
You can also get the 2WD version of the XC70 fairly regularly on Autotrader. I like both cars but for me the slightly higher ride and overall look of the XC just nudges it.
TY J! 🙏🙏 A good looking car.
Love it. I’m on my second XC70 - altho only the D5’s. Still hard to replace. The space the solidity etc etc. quick question… just wondering what happened to the ignition key @9mins 07seconds?!?
Also available on the freelander 2
Awesome shirt!
A transverse inline 6 is hilarious!
XC70, the only car you'll ever need. I have a Japanese import T6 too - a 2011 one, a superb car, currently just over 60k miles, everything standard so far. The Japanese look after their vehicles, like new underneath. Just applied Lanoguard last weekend to protect the car from our salt. If you are ever in the Dundee area again, give me a wave... I drove an Audi A4 quattro for 12+ years before buying the Volvo - no plans to go back to Audi, the Volvo is better in every way with the exception of fuel economy (around 30 mpg taking it easy, the Audi diesel could return 40+mpg).
I have had an unhealthy number of Volvo products……. and as a child, high speed runs up the M1 in a glorious 164e………. driving a friends 164te manual on a driver training course 😊
My current (now old) XC90 d5 SE 185 is awesome….. and my wish is a chipped d5 C30
As regards an increasing desire for wood in your conveyance, I feel, is a reference to your final carriage being made entirely from wood 🎉🇬🇧🙂
Looks like a Japanese import.
The digital speedo is from a newer facelift model. Interesting.
It is possible to fit the TFT screen yourself, but it's not plug & play.
You should try to get a hold of a C70 T5 Coupe from 2000.
Absolutely no t6's in Ireland either, only the 2L and 2.4L models, which is sad tbf though we seem to get the stick with models
Had one, terrible brakes & gas mileage, but dead reliable and very, very good off-road. The F-Pace that replaced it has spent more time in the shop than on the road..... but is much nicer to drive.
The easily forgettable Chevrolet Epica of 2006ish was also offered with a transverse inline 6. Maybe one to try, if you can even find one?!
The trim wasn't the only wood in that car.... 🤔
Two Volvo reviews in one day!
My dream car
Watching this in my V70 D2
>The older you get the higher percent of wood you want in a car.
Wood is much better than cheap looking shiny black plastic that's now the norm in modern cars.
Hi, XC 70? I know it as a V 70 XC CrossCountry in Germany. Oh, it was renamed for series two to XC 70!
As you get older wood in a car becomes more desirable as it sort of makes up for the wood you cant get elsewhere. If you see what I mean.
2:30 it was again facelifted in 2014, this time much more.
Over here 3.2 is rare and T6 is very rare. Including s80 v70 or xc70 especially xc60.
This engine configuration is going to be rare for sure...
There was also a 3.2litre n/a inline6 that was also used in the Land Rover Freelander 2 which is probably a rarer engine as the T6 was the top model
It's not very pokey. Had a chance to drive an s80 with that, and i'd probably prefer any turbo lump over it.
@zloychechen5150 I've only experienced it in the Freelander and it was silky smooth and effortless compared with the normal diesels but it's definitely not a sporty engine
A turbocharged supercharged four cylinder hybrid sounds tempting but….i wouldn’t ☹️
I too have found a distinct reduction of wood the older I get. Wait, am I turning into a Volvo driver?
I was in a better mood before i read your comment((
Will we ever see an Alfa Crosswagon, on the channel? Similar car to xc70 and the most important not a suv)
VW was Volvo partner once so both are similar in some ways
What Volvo, the shirt is the real star.
Does the T6 have that gearbox because it's the best? Or the only one that fits?
I've known dozens of the T6 XC cars die spectacularly. Wouldn't give one to my worst enemy
The wheels are massive! Why I wonder?
Would love a lifted wagon. Sadly no good options hear in the states. Maybe a Outback but idk. Anything from Europe is a absolute negative because of high maintenance costs and low quality and dependability.
So its CUVs and SUVs unfortunately
Thinks ...
Volvo solidity, decent oomph, and can carry the odd fish tank too?
I'll take mine in sapphire blue please :D
Though the economical ones might be the wiser choice, the T6 makes me smile. Not least because it makes Jay smile in a manner that suggests he might buy one sometime ... :)
3.2 and 3.0 T6 were proper engines. Unlike the 2.5T and 2.4D in its 2 gen.
