  • This is how I built a multi purpose dog kennel that doubles as a console table. This kennel not only looks great but doubles as a media table or sofa table. Perfect for housing your dogs or puppies while you are away from home. This makes a great diy project and an awesome doggie den. This video can be used for DIY kennel ideas. had one idea for you about the bars which has helped me out alot when i paint them instead of stain when drilling your holes for the rebar. drill all the way through on the top piece that way you can build the entire thing except the top and paint it before you put the bars in you can then slide the bars in and a wood dowl which your gonna cover up with the top any way and it also reduces the bars rattling around as much

    Tongue oil, Lind seed oil makes a good pre-stain. Multiple coats can be used as a stain plus sealing protection. Came across your videos by chance. This is really nice work. I love the simplicity of it and I really love the distressed finish, which is really in. I have been looking for a side job project and you helped me nail it down, (pun intended). Rebar is cool and particularly good for large dogs, but I’ll try my hand with hog wire. It’s attractive, modern and is really hot for city as well as country designs. Like rebar, it’s fairly inexpensive and readily available in any farming Co-Op. Depending on the gauge and spacing, you can get it for large or small dogs.

    That’s an awesome looking kennel! I may attempt one of these soon as a side project. Been looking for something to build with spare material. One thing’s for certain, people don’t mind spending $$$ on their pets so I’m sure these sell well! Only one thing I may do differently is leave the bottom surface unglued…that way, if you have a pup or older dog that has bladder control issues, you can easily replace the bottom board if necessary down the road if they become urine damaged. when using tape to make the depth on a drill bit, leave a length of tape sticking off of the drill (like a flag). It will start to "sweep" around the hole when it reaches the depth you need. Makes it easier to know when you are at the correct depth.

      My dog, my daughter's dog, and son's dog all sleep in crates. None of them EVER relieve themselves in their crates.....I suppose a non-housetrained dog might though. But our dogs all treat their crates like their own private spot where they go to be left alone from the kids, etc.

      I was wondering about this. I built a double dog crate similar to this a while back and used replacement plastic trays from Amazon that are used in those metal dog crates. I built the dog crate around the size of those trays. Our dogs don't have accidents anymore, but we do get the occasional throwup. Not to mention muddy wet dogs after rain or snow. I'd worry about warping too if it gets wet. Although if you have to buy those trays from Amazon, your cost goes up.

      731 Woodworks Yes I am. Mine is for a Cane Corso so it will need to be big. My plan is to paint it white with a stained top. I also may put some decorative trim on it. We’ll see how motivated I am once I get moving. I really like the idea of the painted rebar. I may make mine all the way around. This will be a good project to have my kids help me. Lots of things for them to do.
      I am new to wood working so that’s another reason this is a good project for me. It isn’t super complicated with a ton on intricate cuts. What do you use to make your angled holes for the screws?

    • @731Woodworks
      @731Woodworks  6 років тому

      It’s a pocket hole jig. They work very well and make a good strong joint. I recommend the Kreg K5 amzn.to/2FnxItA or Kreg K4 amzn.to/2CEW5Qt and you’ll need 2 1/2” pocket hole screws for 1x5” (2x4) material amzn.to/2EWCe4B . If you want to save some money getting started you can get the Kreg R3 jig amzn.to/2sQ3DjM but you’ll need a clamp to clap it everywhere you want pocket holes. If you can afford it, I would recommend getting the K4 or K5 instead of the R3. Hope that helps! (Amazon affiliate links included in comment)

    We are planning to get a golden retriever puppy in two weeks. My wife wants me to build a kennel furniture like. This will be my first time building one. I think i can do it. I been watching many videos to get some ideas
    I really like yours the most. You explained it very well. All it did was Encourage, and Motivate me to do this even more. I do have most of the tools.
    Thanks a lot.

      @@731Woodworks Hi i have a question. Do you think it would be okay to build my kennel out of 3/4 pine? My face frame pine will probably be 3 1/2 0r 4 inches wide.
      My rebar will be 3/8. I want to make sure this will work. Thanks

      @@jorrba3934 3/4" thick? If so that's only going ot leave you with about 3/16" space on each side of the rebar. I'd only try it if I had a drill press so I could ensure the holes for the rebar were perfectly centered.

    You can cover the pocket holes by inserting a dowel with a little wood glue and cutting off the excess with a flush cut saw. If you paint it, you’ll never know the pocket hole is there.

    if the boards for the top are jointed, you don't need to use pocket screws to hold them together. just the wood glue and parallel clamps would be sufficient to keep the boards together. the glue is actually stronger than the wood itself. that's how they make laminate wood boards, cutting boards, etc.

    Very nice job. You show great attention to detail. I’m new to your channel. I just found you a few days ago after I was searching for woodworking projects to make money as I’m planning on starting a side business doing things like this on my off days. I’ve watched a lot of your build videos and videos giving business advice. I was curious if you would mind keeping up with the amount of hours you have in projects that you’re making a video on and at the end of your videos tell us how many hours it took you to complete. That would help those of us thinking about doing this on the side guesstimate how many hours a project will take so we can give a semi accurate quote to our customers. For example, this project I wouldn’t have a clue how long it would take me to build, but if I knew how long it took you to build it then I could guesstimate roughly how many hours it would take me. Keep the videos coming brother. You’re an inspiration to novice carpenters.

    • @stonecrazy3
      @stonecrazy3 6 років тому +1

      Shandi Scott Hi, don’t mind sharing at all. I based mine off the size of the dog crates we had our boxers in. We had them in the large 42” crates, so I tried to get it as close to possible as that. However, I used 2 by material as in this video and with it being a larger kennel it is extremely heavy! The top is 30”x88” the enclosure outer dimensions are 28”x85” the height with feet and top is 33”. So it gives each dog an interior size of 25”x40.25”x27”tall. The only thing I did different on mine from Matt’s other than size for 2 dogs, is use plywood for the floor and I made wooden balusters for the side panels and divider instead of using the metal bars. We stained it rustic gray then went over it with a white glaze to give it a weathered look. It came out really nice!

    What kind of gymnastics did you have to do to attach the top once bars and top frame was in place?
