I greatly enjoy the old WH40k lore stories. "Deathwing" is one of the earliest Black Library books, if I recall correctly, and I am very grateful that you are giving it voice. Thank you!
Predates Black Library, it came out during GW´s first forage into paperback publishing, c.1989-1993, after which it was put on hold until 1998 I think, when Black Library proper was launched.

I don't remember this story, but then it was many years ago I read the anthology. Had to look it up if it was one of the added ones in the 2001 re-print of the book, but it was in the original 1990 edition as well (the book I owned).
Probably will remember it a bit in...
It is very much a Rogue Trader-era story... The kind of small scale scenarios suggested in the rulebook, before we really had armylists and codexes... One judge, one Inquisitor and one Assassin the latter more of an allround agent, before they became the specialized temples we have known them as during 2nd edition (although the Callidus was established early on, I think, there is one other story in the book, and I think her temple is mentioned by name in it? I remember mostly the unorthodox use of a certain bit of equipment as a desperate weapon in the final fight... and that they added the then just introduced to game T'au and Kroot to the list of creatures the assasins could morph into, in the 2001 edition, right? )
(And, yeah, I remembered what the "twist" was there... Story is btw obviously fairly inspired by the classic 1950's sci fi novel "A canticle for Liebowich"... )

It's not your fault if you are unaware of the meaning of the word religion. It comes from Latin for "to link" (religo, religere...) and refers to a) social bonding through exoteric practices (examples : going to Church on sunday ; partaking into Matsuri with the Yakuza shopkeepers et all) and b) to the corpus of rites which links to the Metaphysical (Rite means the correct manner to do something ; it is determined through metaphysical ken in normal societies, contrary to what modernists believe).
Hence, no actual religion is "made up" (unlike the average japanese trivia group, or Protestantism, which is in essence denial of Rites, Sacrifice and Contemplation) but id Traditional inasmuch as it is handed fown from a primordial / atemporal sacred source. One meaning of holiness is "unsullied, wholesome", conferre Seneca's words to Lucillius on God (contact me latter, I might bother to search for the reference if you are interested to know) thus if you claim that all Religions have as much legitimacy to determine the holiness and purity of something then you are correct in the limits of their factual lore if their priests, especially when it comes to Rites since methodology is involved ; for instance, post-Toya Kannushi do studies and are delivered a professional licence, but even if they have knowledge on Christianity they can't celebrate the Eucharist or determine the ideal place to build a Church or Cathedral unless they destroy a shrine of Shintoism to free a known sacred space, of course.
However, if you claim that religions are simply Fake, superstitions, etc. Then what about Scientisme's impostures ? Just like Christianity from where it came, it has priests (scientists), bishops to decide who gets to be one, monks (researchers) contemplating their "God" (Physic, Nature, i.e. Naturalism), "saints" (such as Einstein and Galileo, both dubbious figures of course), prophets (journalists and futurologists) and so on, it only misses a Pope.
But let's cut to the chase, shall we ?
In traditional societies, for instance, initiation (diksha in Sanskrit) is of paramount import... The ritual of puberty initiation was seen as the preliminary condition to become an adult man, but not so for women, because they do not need such addendum to their education in order to ensure their growth to womanhood, true virility however has a fundamentally different character as it is acquired in metaphysical endeavour and put to use in them also, not in naturalistic behaviours. Puberty initiation was however but a preliminary step ; qualitatively, hierarchically, it is not on the same level as those that lead to higher states of consciousness.
Initiation was practiced in all societies... Except Christianity and - sort of - Judaism ; and modernists societies which following the barbarous manners inherited from them, made to cease almost entirely all initiatory institutions' operations, at least on a widely relevant level.

I tripped and injured my knee ending up with 19 stitches as I was still a young scout and packed my hiking backpack top-heavy......I hiked out just fine as our scoutmaster patched me up real good and I healed up just fine.....though I will NEVER forget that experience I still love hiking the AT and other trails on the East coast.

You jump from one group to the next without pause, warning, or similar, and you presume, we just hop along without any issues.
I, myself, have severe Asperger's and severe ADHD.
To me, all this wild branche-hopping in that tree that is the story, is not that clear.
And I can assume, there are others with the same issue.
I therefore ask you, to either implement a brief pause so we become aware you venture to a different section or group, or even better, literally warn us, that you do.

A simple wisdom which that idiotic Chaos-Empire of "Uu-Maans" would surely benefit from.
Simplicity is the "true god", I would say.
Life is dead simple.
One does not need to think to make his heart beat, or to have his lungs breath.
It is nigh totally automatically.
Life IS that simple.
But them "Uu-Maans" cannot accept that what is simple, can they.
They have this innate need, to always overcomplicate things.
A need, based in their emotional asylum.
For, indeed so, an asylum their emotional being is.
An intelligent and wise one, would see, that emotion, or, what they call "feelings" (snortingly and with a grinning smile said, followed by a pause to let that insult sink in) ... is the absolute nemesis of intelligence and intellect.
"Uu-Maans", led by silly things as Greed, Lust, Power-hunger, and other very, VERY good evil emotions, which I then, prefer not to dwell upon myself, but, DARN GOOD for them "Uu-Maans", as it ensures their own undoing, and thereby proving my enlightenment in the matter I am speaking of, for which I thank these "Uu-Maans" for providing this simple truth with undeniable fact with all proof (Now with an ear-to-ear smile speaking), cursing not just their "Uu-Maan" underlings, but, equally so, even themselves, with a life so bleak, violent, deprived of any true value.
But then, dear speaker, and yes, I am still addressing you, oh, @A Border Prince, I thought, you were above all this?
And still, you too, seem to prefer this strangely bizarre ""Uu-Maan" format of odd complicating of all things simple?
