People in the US capital Washington DC awoke to the news that had already shocked the world - the news that Britain's Princess Diana was dead.
Princess Diana and her friend Dodi Al Fayad were killed along with the driver of their car during a high speed car chase as they tried to escape photographers in Paris.
People over the country rushed to British Embassies to pay tribute to their favourite princess.
Major city newspapers splashed grim headlines on front pages, telling the tragic story.
On the final summer holiday weekend in America tourists were gathering as usual outside one of Washington's most familiar landmarks, The White House.
And in front of the US president's home, there was, as elsewhere, shock and disbelief.
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
'You know I've always considered her to be kind of a victim throughout her adult life and this just seems so unfair for this to happen and just a bad state for everybody I think because she was just such a good person'.
    SUPER CAPTION: Washington resident
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
'She knew better what she was doing and what she was good at and she insisted in the interview on the fact that now she wanted to well, to give a lot of love to people and to take care of people all over the world'.
SUPER CAPTION: Annick Cojean, Correspondent, "Le Monde".
(Conducted the last interview with Princess Diana)
In the city of New York, often visited by Princess Diana, people were reacting with equal shock and disbelief at the news of her death.
The news was splashed across the front pages of papers in languages from across the world.
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
'It's a terrible loss to the world, I think that Princess Diana was a wonderful humanitarian who did so much for so many charities and so many people and I think that not only Great Britain at a terrible loss, I think we all are.'
    SUPER CAPTION: New York Resident
Disbelief was also turning to sadness, anger and even guilt over the way Diana lost her life.

As a Brit, it's touching to see that this happened in America.

She impacted my parents. My dad remembers the first thing he watched on TV when he migrated from Mexico to the states was princess Diana marrying Charles. He said that for some reason he felt something positive and beautiful from her. They were the same age actually. She died months before I was born, he ended up convincing my mom to change my name from what they originally had to Diana. In honor of Lady D, which is how he refers to her to this day. Such a beautiful soul taken from us.

My grandmother in El Salvador was a fan of her. I would read the newspaper and magazines she had saved from the 1980’s and the 90’s about her. She used to have a portrait of Diana next to ours and surprisingly I went to visit her this year and she still has all of it.

We ask governments in all countries to unite bridge pillars as high as one or two meters so that if a car hits a bridge support it can still slide not as badly as a car hits a bridge pillar so that an accident hitting pillar like what happened to princess Diana does not happen again sorry and thank you

I wonder if Clinton would still have bent on education testing if this hadn't happened.
