@@kellyvaters1689 I'm guessing he considered defeating Nazis a greater achievement than getting more votes than the other guy when he was elected. At request of President Johnson, General Eisenhower played a prominent role in President Kennedy's memorials. I recall on day of Assassination, reporters were interviewing him and addressing him as "General," as opposed to "Mr. President," like former presidents are usually addressed.
@@jamescook6564 That is incorrect. Ike relinquished his military rank when he entered the race for president in 1952, as he was required to do. After he left office in January 1961, he submitted a request to have his rank restored and Congress acted upon it by March 1961. President Kennedy promptly notified Eisenhower by letter that his request had been granted. That is why you hear Kennedy address Eisenhower as "General" in their phone conversations during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1963.
I get your point. President de Gaulle, one of his comrades-in-arms from world war 2, represented France as general Eisenhower's funeral. It was one of the last things he did as France's president.
A real hero, he helped save the world. I liked how four of the eight military pall bearers into the National Cathedral are African American. For some, that's not significant, but for all the black youth to see that inclusion honoring a great man, and also for any racists to see their view won't stand. Ike was the Supreme Allied Commander and recognized his fellow soldiers regardless of the construct of 'race'. He was just a good person.
It's interesting to me how much General Eisenhower's state funeral mirrors what I've been seeing in the funeral of Queen Elizabeth. Both of them were excellent leaders and well deserving of such a grand send-off.
@@eddiegaltek In scale, no, but that was not the point. As far as the elements of the funeral, yes. The formal procession, the coffin draped with the flag, the lying-in-state...these are probably elements common to the funerals of leaders all around the world, but before now I only ever saw Presidential funerals.
I didn't know this until a while ago, but apparently his son passed away back in 2013. I wouldn't have thought a president's offspring from back then would've still been alive at that time.
Dwight Eisenhower's son John graduated from West Point on June 6, 1944. D-Day. In the movie "Ike: Countdown to D-Day" there is a scene where General Walter S. "Beetle" Smith, Eisenhower's Chief-of Staff, is momentarily speechless when he realizes that John will be graduating on D-Day.
I remember watching his funeral. I was quit young but he was the first president I remember. Also, I found it heart warming not too long later That Eisenhower's grandson Davif, married Nixon's daughter, Julie.
He is the first president I remember - the Republican convention of 1956 - he first convention my parents watched on their first television. I was 6 years old.
Former U.S. President. Harry S. Truman was unable to attend the funeral service for his successor, because he's at Key West for vacation with his family, He sent a condolence message to General's widow Mamie Eisenhower and President Richard Nixon.
A lot of people may not know this but President Eisenhower had an older brother named Edgar. When this older brother was a senior in high school, his classmates voted him most likely to become President of the United States. Talk about a spooky near miss.

Humble patriot..
Ike was the Prez when I was born.
De Gaulle made it to Sir Winston's funeral...
Beautiful. God rest his soul.
The era of great men, has been passed ...
We all still like ike
The U.S became the global superpower under his leadership
Yep can agree with your comment… The US took the mantle of world policeman… And keeping the Soviet Union at bay. A great President and General

What is the title of the song that the choir sings at the very beginning of the video ?
Even after he was president he was still referred to as General, never Mr. President.
He would have been addressed as President Eisenhower, as opposed to as Mr. President, as he would have been while in office.
@@kellyvaters1689 He was addressed as General even when he was president. Don't take my word for it look it up. Look up some of his speeches or the debate.

That is incorrect.
@vivianpowell1732 you never paid attention. Even president Kennedy referred to him as general.
Those marine uniforms never age
DDE was indeed a great man, and the last decent Republican. Good video - thanks! :)
Why are there almost no comments?
Idk
because it's a foolish world so something truly wise will be ignored
I get your point. President de Gaulle, one of his comrades-in-arms from world war 2, represented France as general Eisenhower's funeral. It was one of the last things he did as France's president.
It's called "don't give a s---." Few remember what "Supreme Commander of The Allied Forces" would mean. Few care about the liberators of WWII.
He was an effective leader behind the scenes, he did not need to create a lot of flash around him.
If he knew what's going on today, he'd be happy to have already move forward.
I heard that he was an extraordinary poker player.
1:50 that looks like the Kennedy Limo. I know they refurbished it and put it back in the fleet.
It is.
Why are comments turned off for Winston Churchill but not Dwight Eisenhower? Is one above reproach and the other not?
Back when this once great country was respectable, and didn’t have two walking memes as the last two presidents.
It's interesting to me how much General Eisenhower's state funeral mirrors what I've been seeing in the funeral of Queen Elizabeth. Both of them were excellent leaders and well deserving of such a grand send-off.
no where near the scale of the queens
Do you still think they're comparable?
@@eddiegaltek In scale, no, but that was not the point. As far as the elements of the funeral, yes. The formal procession, the coffin draped with the flag, the lying-in-state...these are probably elements common to the funerals of leaders all around the world, but before now I only ever saw Presidential funerals.
Who would have dreamt? In 2022, I’ve become an Eisenhower Republican but, no such party exists anymore….
Great filimg for that time
A totally different era.
The brain behind the victory over the tyrant Nazis. He and his force saved the world in the war . Long live hero!! 🌹🌹🌹
Former U.S. President. Harry S. Truman was unable to attend the funeral service for his successor,
because he's at Key West for vacation with his family, He sent a condolence message to General's widow Mamie Eisenhower and President Richard Nixon.
I was there in 1969 lining the route. I saw the limos pass by.
A lot of people may not know this but President Eisenhower had an older brother named Edgar. When this older brother was a senior in high school, his classmates voted him most likely to become President of the United States. Talk about a spooky near miss.
Dwight D. Eisenhower was my 9th cousin 4 times removed
