  • This StudyBall is going to be a reaction to the Bills firing Ken Dorsey yesterday. Now, one of my biggest pet peeves with social media and where society is right now is that when you defend one person, everybody thinks that you’re criticizing or condemning another person. I never like to work that way. Sometimes it’s just about defending one side of things and yes, sometimes there’s collateral damage that you have to point out some issues with somebody else in doing so…but this is really just to talk about Ken Dorsey and how it didn’t make sense to me why they made that move with all the success they have had previously. Yeah, things are going great right now, but it’s not just on one person. When I look at an offensive coordinator, I say to myself their job is to get guys open for their players to be able to make plays. Now, we can talk about creativity…we can talk but you could do this different. I get it but the bottom line is are guys getting open…are you putting your players in positions to make plays and then the players have to make those plays. So, as we take a look at the Bill’s offense, I just want to show you what I’m seeing…and a lot of people will say I’m attacking Josh Allen. I’m not attacking Josh Allen at all…I actually think he is one of the best quarterbacks in the national football league. That said, I don’t believe that he’s playing his best football right now and you’ve got to figure out why. Maybe that’s part of why they let Ken Dorsey go, because Josh isn’t playing his best football right no. But to me it’s always a collective effort…when you’ve had success and then all of a sudden things start to fall off, it’s not just pointing the finger at one guy. I’ve seen it too often in this business where one person becomes a scapegoat, and again maybe there’s more going on…maybe there’s things that I don’t know about. But I was just watching the film and I didn’t agree with this move. Let’s dive into the tape and let me show you what I’m saying. #joshallen #kendorsey #buffalobills

    Man i love this. Kurt Warner is one of my favorite NFL analysts. He hits the elusive balance between skillful communication and expertise-detailed, in-depth anaylsis that's organized so it's easy to comprehend, AND no bs like so many others (i.e. sound-bite platitudes that just serve as filler for guys who like to hear themselves talk... Y'all know guys I'm talking about lol). Football is one sport where the more you learn, the more you love it. It really is like a chess match played out on-field by some of the world's best athletes. Look if you watch a lot of football, you’ll know that in my opinion, offenses have the advantage in the first 4-5 weeks of the season(I know the pundits say the opposite, but the offense can put in new schemes and plays that the defense hasn’t seen, and offense has all off season and preseason to practice) with that said, if u look back to even last year, after week 4-5 this offense was in dire straights. The offense called the same plays, same formations, no layers or plays different, built off the same old formations. Why are you in shot gun on a 3rd and 1 or 2 yards ALL the time. You put josh under center on those, the defense has a harder time trying to decide what they will run. It can be a run, a play action, a play action with josh running on a roll out, or a roll out with a pass to a linemen or TE. Dorsey never even implemented motion with crack back blocks on run plays. Sooooo vanilla. I’m glad they fired him. I don’t like seeing a guy lose his job, but it was overdue

    Great video Kurt! This was the first game in this span of 6 flat offensive games where Allen really looked lost. If you were to look at Allen's numbers in the previous 5 games, even with the INT's his numbers suggest that it wasn't really him that was the problem. High COMP%, good yards, TD's etc etc. Now admittedly simply looking at stats is not telling the whole story, but also, what others are doing where they pick a few plays where Allen is missing open receivers and acting like he is playing bad is also deceiving. This was the first game where he really looked terrible, even with the INT's in the previous 5 games. Allen is pressing, he is inside his own head, the coaches are in his head. THey wanted him to play different. Josh started the season with this controlled excitement or whatever he called it mentality. Who put that into his head. We have Fournette, who is a veteran of 6 seasons, who has said that it will take him longer to learn the play book because this is the most complicated playbook he has ever seen.. Really? Is Dorsey overcomplicating this thing? Too many questions as to what has gotten the Bills offense to this point and why it wasn't being fixed.

  • @YourMachines
    @YourMachines 8 місяців тому +14

    The reason Dorsey probably got fired was cause he had two backs avg 7 yds a carry in a game where he decided to throw more than give the ball to them. On the Bills last TD drive they didn't attempt one pass. Do that all game and they probably shit stomp the Broncos...coming from a Broncos fan.

      Yes exactly. It’s the kind of insight we crave, to better understand why things are so hard for the Bills currently. There’s no doubt in my mind that the team feels the tremendous weight of the fans’ expectations, and that’s contributing to Allen’s apparent lack of confidence. I do think that, for whatever reasons, the Bills offense is predictable to other defenses and they feel less afraid to challenge now than before.

    Interesting to see the mistakes Josh Allen made. The only part I'm concerned about now is that Watson shows some of those same qualities; half-second late, bailing on plays to early and being impatient in the pocket. Unfortunately, the Denver game was the straw that broke the camel's back. This team's offense hasn't been right since the Kansas City win last year. On paper, the numbers were great. But watching the team week after week, every down seemed like a struggle. It was out of sync most of the time. Sure, there would be stretches of great drives or a game or two like the Dolphins but then it would fall apart. There was no imagination to the offense. Hardly any pre snap motion.i even texted a friend the other night, how many times in a row are they going to line up in the same exact shotgun formation over and over and over and over again. Defenses were figuring it out. Out of 10 games this season, they had 3 good offensive games, one pretty good against the Bucs, and the rest were mediocre to bad. Yes, Allen turns the ball over too much. But the play calling wasn't helping fool the defense. There wasn't any adjustments being made. It was difficult and frustrating to watch.

      @@biym6969 They looked good up that point but then defenses were figuring it out and adjustments weren't made. They didn't do enough to develop a running game through out the year. They traded for Nyheim Hines, and while he was excellent in the return game on special teams, Dorsey had a difficult time scheming him into the offense. They had such a hard time developing a slot receiver, to the point they had to bring back Cole Beasley. It seemed out of sync last year as well. They barely beat a 3rd string quarterback in the 1st round of the playoffs and then we're beat soundly by the Bengals. At that point they were emotionally drained and beaten down from the shooting in Buffalo to the snowstorms to the Hamlin incident. I also chalked it up to growing pains with a 1st year OC. But it regressed even further this year. I thought they did a good job breaking down the offensive struggles in this video
      ua-cam.com/video/pIDKWEzr_Kk/v-deo.htmlsi=owlUI4agUvWKVjKo
      Dan Orlovsky has had great breakdowns of how predictable this offense had become as well.
      For an offense with this talent to not score more than 25 points in 7 of the 10 games played during the easy half of their schedule, something wasn't working. Not every game is going to be a blow out but something had to change with the difficult part of the schedule coming up.

    • @ThorGodofThunder420

      @TheHeadincharge maybe they should run the ball more. The straw that broke the camels back for me was the bills running for 7.1 ypc in the first half and opening with 4 straight throws. They finally decided to run the ball down denvers throat on their last drive. As the OC he should see the struggle and adjust. Run the ball until they load the box and pull more defenders in, then you get REAL 1 on 1 match ups. You get people wide open. Before the last drive they threw the ball like 6 or 7 more times than they ran it and they were getting all they could eat on the ground. He doesn't even have creative runs, there's no jet sweeps, no double handoffs, no flea flickers. It's all just so vanilla. He was putting too much pressure on Josh to make the perfect plays all the time when they don't even need to throw the fucking ball.

    Kurt, I'm a little late here, but are those mirror routes actually Verts .. .cause it seems that the receiver on the near side had an option to either check up or go deep depending on coverage. Coverage was tight, so Josh expected a deep route, but the receiver checked - thus the ball went sailing over his head. Safety working back to mof on near side, so maybe josh figured the WR was going to bust deep vs m2m... but the coverage was off so I would have expected the wr to check. Not on same page either way.
    I was never a big joe brady fan (overrated from lsu results), but I love some of the added concepts - using the RBs/TEs - using Josh's legs more - setting up the power with the spread pass and runs. More of that college flexibility - power spread if you will.

    While the analysis of these passing plays are on point and Josh made some mistakes here, I think the video misses the most important thing: Allen seems to make these mistakes because he feels pressure on himself to make big plays. As an OC, I have to notice that and put some pressure off his shoulders by giving him a decent RUN GAME. Dorsey did not give his RBs the ball at all and ran most plays from shotgun without playaction. This puts Allen in the situation shown in the video.

And btw at the 6m mark you nailed it - Josh isn't patient in his progressions later in the year - why? - Bills are struggling - he's feeling the pressure again to be DA MAN .... honestly I don't think this sit in the pocket and read patiently is Josh's thing ... some other more innovative and simple schemes would be great - use his legs - one and two read stuff then run ... Play actions - rollouts -- all different kinds of stuff to keep it simple and let him be josh... college style - think that's what brady is doing more -- but now we are transitioning once again with a new OC late in the year.

    Hey Kurt, I almost always agree with your criticism or critique, but with this film, yes I guess those guys are open in NFL speak. But with Josh having thrown a pick already, and nearly threw a second, I believe those guys are covered in most of that film. The route by kincade when he drops the ball, that was in his hands, and as I watched josh during this game specifically looked to be dbl clutching the ball a lot more. I watch a lot of game film, but never played the position, so it’s just my opinion. But from all the different breakdowns of Dorsey’s play calling, I could see there wasn’t much variety in the routes or scheme. Even orlofsky said that their offense was the easiest to prepare for. I watch another pod cast called cover one, and even they said the same as Dan, there are no layers to his passing routes/scheme. You look at teams like Houston, and their guys look to be schemed open, with a rookie qb and not a true number 1 receiver. As far as what I mean, the play that kincade dropped with the dbl slants, why not have kincade break a out route, and diggs a slant. Basically the safety is helping with diggs, and the corner covering kincade, not only has to work through traffic, but he also has single coverage. I totally agreed with his firing. I could have written a book on how all his plays/routes are the same, dictated by the coverage.

  • @erikmacaluso
    @erikmacaluso 8 місяців тому

    Dorsey's offense was so unnecessarily complicated while being so painfully predictable.
    Basically each receiver was to read the defense and coverage and then pick a route based on the general play concept that would beat the cover. Which leads me to believe nobody had a clue what the guy next to them was going to do on any given play. And this is framed by replays of Bills receivers literally running into each other and being in the same spot on the field, multiple times throughout this season already.
    Also, Coach Claps needed another fall guy.

      You can watch film on just about every team in the league and see missed receivers and all just like what Warner is pointing out. Bills problems start with not having any real talent at wr after diggs. Gabe Davis is not a starting nfl wr. He’s not even a #3. He’s very limited athletically, I e been watching for years since he’s been here. I cehckecn out his draft profile by scouts and they described him to a T. A decade or so ago buffalos # reciever was Stevie Johnson who looked a lot better than he actually was because he was the best they had to throw to. Gave Davis’s big plays now and then and straight up lack of consistent possession receiver type numbers tell the story.

We all know that's not totally true ... but... this is way too much timing and read progressions imho for josh... hmmm..going to see how it's going this sunday night - last game vs dolphins. havent seen the bills since the first couple of games with Brady...

When you look at the stats, Josh is #3 in Completion %, #4 in total yards, #1 in total tds, #4 in adjusted QBR, and just behind Patrick Mahomes in passer rating. Also, isn't he like 5th best in turnover-worthy plays %? Just seems like whatever can possibly go wrong, is going wrong.

    You're a football genius, and understand the game, perhaps, more than Josh Allen ever will (that doesn't mean he might not be a HOFer some day). As a college OC myself, this year I had a complete disconnect between what I wanted and what the players understood. Ultimately, that's on me. Dorsey was annointed "the quarterback whisperer" as Allen made his ascention from raw talent to one of the best ever; perhaps, that was just the case of Daboll behing the actual impetus behind Allen's success -- coaches often give their assistants all the credit. That is not to say Dorsey doesn't understand the game, but it is obvious, from your own analysis, that Josh has ceased to understand the bigger picture, of the play and of the situation, in the last two years as we've watchted the parabula his perfomance has taken, at least in the public's eyes. The other factor here is that, McDermott has infused his "Brian Billick" approach to the game, and Josh might be double-clutching on simple reads because he has his HC in his ear telling him, "Whatever you do, DON'T throw an interception! That is the FORMULA to winning games in the NFL!" Whichever has affected Allen more, Dorsey had to go. Ultimately, they held on to the wrong coach after the :13 second game, in which Josh Allen looked liked the best quarterback in NFL history.

    Allen seems to be struggling with self-doubt. He's not trusting his instincts on reads, making him reluctant to pull the trigger early in a play. It's like he's double-checking his work...which is a great habit on paper but awful for elite sports where milliseconds matter. Earlier in the season i remember Allen talking about how he was aiming to change his style of play a bit-as he gets older he said he wanted to evolve away from his improvisation/scrambling, in part to stay healthy and in part to avoid costly mistakes. (This topic also came up more recently in that podcast he did along with Tom Brady, where Brady essentially said Allen should be more cautious with his improvisation/scrambling, too.) Maybe this goal to evolve & mature his game got in Allen's head so much that he's second-guessing all the time out there, leading to late throws and broken plays?

  • @kazolar2000

    There are scheme issues, and there is sequencing issues, but it wasn't clicking. Since Joe stepped, it's clear that Josh is freed up, they're executing. Also, NO SHOT of Dorsey sticking with the run game against Dallas to run up to 270 yards, he would have called a bunch of shotgun throws, and messed with Josh's reads, got in his head. It was absolutely clear that Josh is way more comfortable with Brady -- not sure if the scheme is that different, Davis is still running bad routes, that hasn't changed, but Dorsey refused to use Cook. To my mind, he should have been fired after the Jacksonville game. Offense has been running on sheer talent of Josh and Diggs for far too long. Not sure how things shake out, but Dorsey is a horrid in-game play caller. You picked a handful of plays where timing was, the TIMING WAS OFF for almost a full calendar year outside of 2-3 game spurts, all other games where they put up a lot of points was simply talent.

About 1/3 of allens picks are off of possesion style throws down field i.e. high risk/reward throws and tipped passes by either our own recievers like davis last week or like when the catch was ripped out of diggs hands or great defensive plays that caused tips at the line or second level. I get Josh is missing throws but isn't it the OC's job to identify the route that should come open pre snap? If the coordinator just calls plays couldn't the quarterback do this based on what he's seeing? This video tells me Dorsey who wasn't a great pro himself and was seeing ghosts when he became a professional isn't what the Bills need. They need a coach who knows what's coming and has beaten those looks before. Not knocking Dorsey but he hasn't done anything professionally that would lead me to believe he isn't the problem. Kurt was cold blooded but he also had Martz and Vermeil, 2 offensive geniuses and I'm pretty sure that helped considering how late Kurt became a HOF'er.

The Bills did well last year in spite of that, although the offense starting having issues in the 2nd half of last season. The performance from players to me still comes from a lack of enthusiasm in whats being called. It's too predictable from a scheme point and players aren't being used to highlight their strengths. It's an efficiency based offense that is boring its skill players by not letting their strengths shine. It requires alot of heavy lifting by rhe offense. Allen has a large blame in this but the bigger blame still fell on dorsey. He wasn't developed enough as a OC for this team and roster he can definitely thrive and grow in another situation this one wasn't the fit for him.

    Dorseys most obvious mistake. Calling gun all the time. The whole offense has a big problem with that. The running game is ofc not working in gun formation but the problems go beyond that. The offense is extremly predictable. And if you set a safety as a qb spy and get diggs in double coverage, the rest in regular man coverage, then dorseys system is at the very end. This offense then has nothing else to offer. The playcalling wasnt great ar all and under brian daboll it simply looked much better and way more creative. Dorsey isnt the single problem here but with his playcalling they cannot get this offense go again.

    From a meta perspective:
    Regardless the Xs and Os, it's been clear from last season that this offense made everything look hard for this whole team; the metrics and record were the talent shining through in spite of the scheme and play-calling.
    McDermott should have recognized this and fired Dorsey in the off-season; on top of 13 Seconds, and questionable game decisions and game plans, an outward impression of little or no accountability from the HC or anybody really, McDermott's culture brings a very high floor, but also lowers the ceiling substantially.
    So a move had to be made when this season, predictably, has gone much worse as the ball luck has regressed to the curve relative to last season, when a lot of ball luck was going our way. McDermott's process fails to account for luck, though, as he seems to prefer to coach and manage the team purely by metrics. The buck stops at McDermott, but, the Pegulas won't fire him, so Dorsey had to go, cuz otherwise McDermott may not have seen next week; Hell, he may still not, or maybe (hopefully) loses his job at the end of the season.
    McDermott the DC is elite; McDermott the HC, is toxically loyal and unable to hold people accountable for their failures. His process and culture are great for an early rebuild, NOT to see the promised land.
