  • What I love so much about Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes and their rapport together is how they play just a little bit outside the structure of every single play. This can be dangerous at times but when you have two unbelievable players that have a great feel for the game and understand each other as well as these guys do, how beneficial that slight adjustment within the course of a play can lead to big plays.
Super Bowl week here on Studyball and so as you guys know I like to break down the game and get into more details throughout the week like I normally would. We are going to look at a lot of different things. Take a look at the playmakers for each quarterback, the dynamics of those quarterbacks, the defenses, or any other little things that stand out and may be a contributor to the game on Sunday afternoon.
That’s some really good stuff between two guys that have an unbelievable feel for the game. I would not recommend you doing this with all of your different receivers. That’s really tough. It was hard for me as a quarterback when my receivers would do that because I was was always looking at defenders, I was trying to get my read and ball out on time and when a guy adjusts like this, it’s hard to do that. But what you see with Patrick Mahomes is he will play a little more off schedule than a lot of quarterbacks just buying a little bit of extra time. It allows him to see exactly what Travis Kelce is doing. For those two guys to work together to find openings and that’s going to be key against a really good Philly defense in the Super Bowl. Those two have to be on the same page and making some of those plays that might not be there within the structure of the play. #traviskelce #kansascitychiefs #superbowl

Defenses are designed to stop designed offensive plays and concepts. The reason Mahomes and Kelce are nearly impossible to defend is because they live outside of the structure whenever the play isn't there in structure. Kelce frequently doesn't run the route as it is drawn up because as a former QB, he understands the coverages and can see them the same way Mahomes does. That's important because they can stay on the same page even when the play goes out of structure and turns into backyard football because they are both looking at and reading the defense the same way. This type of connection between a QB and a receiver has been nearly impossible to defend every time we have seen it over the years. Mahomes and Kelce aren't the only time we have seen this, but they might be the best at staying on the same page throughout the chaos of a broken play the league has ever seen.

This is why the Chiefs need to start preparing for Kelce's retirement now. He hasn't shown any signs of slowing down, but the reality is he's 33, and he takes a lot of hits. They need to get someone Mahomes can build that kind of connection with, and they need to start practicing asap. Better to have overlapping years than gap years

@@MVPatty15 You're definitely not wrong. Kelce is the best to ever play the position, so they aren't going to be able to just swap in a new TE to replace him. They will need to get a true #1 receiver as well as a dominant possession receiver to go with the Tight End they replace Kelce with. Yes, it will take THREE players to replace him completely. Kelce is THAT good.

Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes have such a mental connection that cannot be duplicated which makes them the greatest duo in the NFL. It’s like they know what each other is thinking every time on the football field. Kelce has also been used as a decoy to attract attention away from the primary receiver.

Some offenses have this kind of structure built into the play calls, where the QB and receivers make a read pre-snap and know ahead of time how they will adjust their routes to beat the coverage. This is a very difficult kind of offense to execute because very few receivers have the game "intelligence" to pull it off. But every once in a while you will get the right personnel that just clicks. The Tom Brady-Era Patriots were one such example, which is why their receivers were so hard to cover. And to some extent the Steelers with Ben Roethlisberger operated this way as well.

...yyyeah, also, Bill & Tom had literally hundreds of one on one meetings where they pored over the illegal recordings made of other teams' practices. This allowed Tom to know what to look for, & Bill to know where to send the check-downs. Kurt Warner just did a good video showing how Travis Kelce gets free, but he's never as free as the Patriots receivers were.
Cheating helps when the league is too cowardly to punish people for it. It wasn't that _all_ the Patriots receivers knew how to do this or even that there was ever a half-decent offensive coordinator on that team. It was all the end result of the cheat.

For a variety of reasons, who’s gonna cover him? Nickel corners are usually smaller. You’d need to put a bigger safety on him, do you have a safety that can cover in man at a great level?
To go with this, Andy Reid knows this. He constantly shifts Kelce, or puts him off the line. Makes it difficult to man up on him. As a TE he does work next to a tackle too at times, you gonna play your safety on the line in front of a tackle?
It’s not just as easy as placing a man nickel on him.
