- The lyrics to Fortress Around Your Heart by Sting, on The Dream of the Blue Turtles album.
This is what Sting has to say in his lyrics book:
"There are songs of love, songs of heartache, songs of revenge. And then there are songs of reconciliation" (Sting 112).
"Then let me build a bridge, for I cannot fill the chasm." I can't find words to adequately describe the poetic aspect of Sting's lyrics. Beyond genius.
I agree 100%
Tears every time...
Sting is a genius. Synchronicity 1 & Shape of My Heart, I literally just heard this one today, but it’s a poetic masterpiece.🔥💯
Poetry at it's best, and musical genius.
This peaked at only #49 on the U.K. national singles charts on 20-10-1985....unbelievable it wasn't a bigger hit. Brilliant song.
Never knew what the lyrics meant when I was a kid, but now they, unfortunately, make perfect sense.
What do they mean to you?
Anyone listening to this in 2021/2022/2023/2024? Peace to all here! To me, this song reminds all of us how we try to 'own' our relationship with our significant other. We are all human and have our own destiny. Sometimes with you and sometimes with another. I hope he re-built his relationship with her in this song. Many of us have messed up great relationships/friendships. To me. the meaning of the 'mines' represent the accumulation of baggage in a relationship (on both sides). Sometimes in a committed relationship we need to 'let it go' and move on together!
...I still in 2020 and forever...at least while I keep breathing!!
2020 and every other year.. music like this does not die
2020
Actually was getting ready to send it to my Mrs. Should be explanation enuf !
Me!!!! And forever I hope!!!
Been listening to this song since 10 years old. Now that I’m 28 these lyrics resonate with me more than ever.
If your listening to music like this then your much more well rounded than the people around you think
Agreed
You deserve praise, more and more praise.
One of the greatest song ever
Got to see Sting live with the Police's Synchronicity Tour back in 1983 when I was just 11. First concert ever. I had no idea how many concerts I would attend after that. In hindsight, I still can't believe it either.
Never a more compelling song on how to defeat jealousy! This song saved my marriage! 35 years later, and we're stronger than ever!
@@KitaKatt1988 I'm sorry that things are not working out for you, or did not work out for you. Best to move on to something better.
Ooohh I'm a jealous son of a biscuit...lol maybe I don't get the lyrics😂
@@shanagries6457 What don't you get. This song is being sung by the one who is jealous, and with jealousy most of the battle is inside the jealous person's head. In this case, the day to build the city, is more like the length of the relationship. They have children and the relationship has soured because of the "mines". Jealous people see their significant other as a possession. "Mine!" This battle has been going on for some time. In my case only three years; but, the problem was me, I didn't have the confidence to believe that someone could love me for who I was. This song says, I am not my jealousy.
When I first got hooked on this song, and mentioned it to her. She wept, that I finally saw what I was doing. But, in her case, she made me an imaginary fuzzy little stuffed creature, cute... she called "A green meany" It became the emblem of my jealousy. I saw jealousy as a mental demon created from prior heartbreaks. I fell in love easily, I could always find something in someone to love; I fell out hard. One torch from before my wife still existed; I only put it out about 15 years ago. But, before that kept the grean meany in check with this song.
I had to build a bridge because I had destroyed too much of the relationship. I started anew by building a bridge to understanding. Fifteen years ago I finally filled the moat. ;-) We can now both look back on this song with fond remembrance of a former me whose jealousy was born of a lack of confidence and didn't know that I was worthy of unconditional love.
I still have the green meany. If I run across it, I'll post an image, and link it to here! ;-) The only question you have to ask is whether you are the Mine layer, or the recipient of the mines. If it is your significant other who needs to sing this song. Just show it to them and say I wish you could sing this to me. OTOH, I'd make them a "green meany", and tell them it was inspired by this song. If the tables are turned and you're the one with the issues, make a green meany and give it as a gift to yourself. Be sure to also sew a small red heart into the meany, as a reminder of what's at the center of the meany. :-) On the inside, not the outside! ;-)
More than 30 years later, still I think his musical genius is off the chart.
The lyrics to this song are genius.
Ok for baritone!
These lyrics are a poetic metaphor to a failed relationship and then a reconcilliation
to start it again..build this fortress around your heart..fear of walking on the mines
I've laid = fear of repeating the same mistakes again.
relatable
"So let me build a bridge, for I cannot fill the chasm" - Please forgive me, for I cannot undo what I have done.
I hope he re-built his relationship with her in this song Mr. Carver.....many of us have messed up great relationships/friendships. To me. the meaning of the 'mines' represent the accumulation of baggage in a relationship (on both sides). Sometimes in a committed relationship we need to 'let it go' and move on together!
Now I got it!
Another solemn reminder that Nothing lasts......enjoy Now. It really is all we have.
One of Sting's greatest songs ever. Check out his lyrical brilliance, folks.
Wow. The Shakespeare of modern music.
To me this is the most perfectly written song ever.
Michael Derhamer Also, his song "When We Dance": ua-cam.com/video/oBT7uokc8Ss/v-deo.html
Mmm... Probably.
So perfect and an emotion we ALL go through atleast once!
You're not far off from the truth.
Yes it is.
This song is timeless to me ...I buried my dear cousin on Feb 29,1990 and this song was playing in the limo ride to the grave site
Sorry for your loss...just wondering why the limo would be playing music anyway??
My aunt requested music in car to keep her nerves calm
🕯️🙏❤️
Good idea! Music anywhere! After my daughter's grandmothe passed. The song from Pocahontas! Played😊
This, like many of The Police & Sting’s songs, are not only some of the best lyrics but also some very complex key changes & progressions.
Excellent Musicianship !
Yeah I don’t know why but when I hear this song I can’t turn it off for a while. The tempo and harmony in this one, in my opinion is some of Sting’s finest work.
My senior year in H.S. I used to hear this song on my walkman as I prepared my body for Marine Bootcamp entry shortly after graduation
Sting has done some of the most compelling pop rock ever. This one's a good example. He's a smart man, a great lyricist, and writes great songs.
Love the french horn and sax....world class arrangement!
Agreed Brad Fisher
Anyone listening to this in 2019
@@markfromct2 yes
@@markfromct2 absolutely.
Pure Genius!!!!!
His best song in my opinion...gives me chills
The chorus does it to me every time!
Here still getting chills in 2020
Agreed....my niece is named Ariann
I've loved it since the first time hearing it. Damn. Can it really be 35 years? Where the hell did all that time go?
Ditto.
Anyone listening to this in 2019?
His best song in my opinion...gives me chills
Wow. The Shakespeare of modern music.
A great metaphor for the ego's protection of our "shadow self" and the work we must do to excavate our authenticity.
La lírica de esta canción es perfecta!!! Que letra!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
Brilliant song!
I just want to add my voice to the chorus of those
who are very fond of this song, Sting, and The Police.
Jack Wells Hi you look like my Dad.
Great album!first CD ever bought .they said you could notwear them out. I just did.
Love this song it brings so many memories
this writing .... is beyond great... awesome writing
If you don't learn from your mistakes, you're condemned to repeat them.
Overlooked but Sting is a brilliant lyricist
‘Overlooked’ usually means if you look at the artists history they are trying to stay out of the limelight
He’s so freaking good at lyrics, genius. Roger Waters and Sting my favs
For all who live with guarded hearts in fear of love
2022 and still loving it
MASTERPIECE !! 2020
This reminds me of my challenges in life.
Caught my ex wife cheating on me after 12 years of marriage.
My boys and I walked in on her.
Life is much better. It’s been 5 years and I am debt free and have rebuilt my empire and my boys are happy.
Wow. Did you reconcile or move on?
Saimazing Life
I never spoke to her again.
She is dead to me.
Your kids saw it?! That's horrible, I'm sorry. That's the risk you take when you cheat, hurting others beyond repair. Sounds like you repaired your heart though and that's awesome!
Wow😳
Such a haunting melody.
The Police and Sting's music never gets old. Great tunes combined with great lyrics are rare in artists these days! Long live Sting.. We're not worthy!!
MASTERPIECE ⭐🌠
... I TOO, AM OF OF BLUE 💙
The man is a genius! Thanks for giving us the lyrics.
absolutely EPIC lyrics and a phenomenal song ! bieber, lil wayne, 'lady' gag-gag & the rest of todays brain-dead, so-called "musical acts" need to crawl back under the slimy rocks that used to sing under and allow a REAL talent like Sting to be played on the radio ! songs like THIS are true woerks of art, whereas the music you hear on radio today can best be described as TALENTLESS NOISE. props to Sting for great songs like this
I agree , but the majority seems to want that slop. I'm just thankful there are people like Sting making music.
Pure poetry!
Nobody describe love like sting does , this man is a classy Genius who never gets old ...
Agreed Tressa and Shawn. The first time I heard this song I was going through a really bad divorce. The lyrics alone got me through the rough times. I actually cried the first time I heard this song.
Haha me too. I went through divorce in 2018. This song helped me through my trust issues afterwards.
Any red pill-er can relate to that!
Lyrical and metaphorical genius..Sting is
Just an awesome album from an amazingly talented musician...
Sting was underrated in my opinion
I can't belive it's been so many years since this came out
Tell me I know
No doubt! Here it is 6 years after your post... In '85 I flunked out of UW Madison and was working at a sub shop wondering what's next. This song came on the radio every hour. I can pull up that memory/feeling now as I think about it. After many years of hard work and countless life's stories ups and downs, I can say I did pretty darn good. 58 and semi retired, live on 40 acers and can do anything I want to do. And retire whenever I feel like it.
Wow! His ego made his own problems.... truly poetic!!! Walking on the mines I laid! : )
................ An individual's personal insecurity, can lead to severe possessiveness of a friend or lover. Wanting very much to protect a relationship, the fearful one stifles it instead. Fear takes the place of trust. - Joseph
truthaboveagenda perfect explanation
chet732003 - Thank you. Years ago i heard a man state the answer for this difficulty, he said, "replace fear with faith." Plenty of work to accomplish this, yet worth it. -Joseph
Yes!! Too much of a pain in the ass.,, Waste of time, Will fall apart in the long run anyway
Great analogy
Thank you PrettyBluePeople for translating. I sang 80% of that song completely wrong as a kid. :-)
jesi5000 me too
jesi5000 me three!
jesi5000 I think most of us who grew up in the 80’s did. LOL.
jesi5000 yup...
Brilliant I Agree Jack Wells, what a Writer, he sounds like he's reading English Literature set to music.
Are you aware that Sting was. A English teacher prior to The Police?....true....
My favorite STING song!
Sting would be a hero of mine. The music he's made through the years, I don't really listen to it, but the fact that he's made it....I respect that....LOL! In all seriousness, great song!
ALL LOVE PROPHECIES ARE BEING FULFILLED NOW!!💖🌊🕊🌎🕊🌊💖
a great song combines great lyric with great melodic structure. This one melodically goes from one level to another, from a sombre and pensive main part to a soaring and open end chorus.
I. LIKE. THIS. SONG. BY. STING. BECAUSE. THIS. SONG. MAKES. ME. THINK. OF. MY. 16. YEAR. RELATIONSHIP. I. REALLY. MISS. MY. 16. RELATIONSHIP. BECAUSE. WE. WERE. SO. GOOD. TOGHTER.
I have come back to this song many times in life.
The English always seemed to have it over us when it came to clever and intelligently crafted lyrics.
Great song great lyrics one more time great song great lyrics well-written
my fave song off of the Blue Turtles. :) Sting amazes me; some music just can't be put in a box, be it generation or style.
=^^=
I have been looking for this song for a month
Love the key changes and minor chords. Sting is amazing.
One of my 2 favorite Sting songs...the other was Shape of My Heart, which also played during the credits of the movie The Professional, with Natalie Portman and the French dude who played the badass hitman with a heart (It was darker in the real story, from what I understand). Both with the word "Heart" in them, funny enough.
Jean Reno is the actor my friend 👌🏽
a genius Rock and Jazz ..
This Song Went To Number 8 On The Billboard Hot 100 Chart In 1985.
There's so much going on in this song, it's up there with the Doobie Brothers' "What a Fool Believes" as far as both a truly interesting and poetic story couple with more intricate musical content than the average three pop songs put together.
I first heard this song when I was 17. A young man just beginning his journey through life. It touched me in a place that I thought I would never be. Boy was I wrong. I recommend that no human should ever listen to this song. It goes with you, even in your deepest darkest moments. Who wants to live forever?
The chorus of this song is absolutely addictive.
"If I've built this fortress around your heart"
He is saying I know I've done wrong and I'm responsible for the defenses you've put up to keep me away as to preventing further hurt.
"Then I went off to fight some battle
That I'd invented inside my head
Away so long for years and years
You probably thought or even wished that I was dead"
Meaning, he has pushed her away, has been distant from her living inside his own head and she is angry and resentful for being emotionally abandoned.
The chasm is the baggage, damage and resentment which can't be traversed or removed because they are the MINES. Thus, he desires to build a bridge back to her bypassing (her forgiving) what is in the chasm and he will then put an end to the battlements (arguments/fighting).
His sincere contrition and regret is ignored and the offer to build the bridge rebuffed by her because she is filled with resentment (the prison sentence lyric)
An extremely sad and emotional song for those who know
F***** song is deep 👍👍👍🔥
Well said 👍👍

Indeed
Chills.
Every. Fucking. Time.
Growing up I've learned english watching TV and reading Sting's lyrics
Great song from a great artist. Love sting and the police.
Sting is a fantastic singer of amazing music and songs And this song is wonderful
Wow this song Rocks, even in 2020. This is “The Police” that Everyone will always have respect for. Good Day Everyone!
(muttering between clenched teeth) Nothing worse than getting into a favorite song, and have it pause half way only for an advertisement to appear.
grazie mille pretty blue people!
i was listening to Sirius XM 1st Wave and this came on and i haven't heard it for a long time and forgot how good this song is lyrically and musically
Fuck this is a great song ...lyrics are mind blowing
One of the best lines in rock history:
"This prison has now become your home
A sentence you seem prepared to pay"
Reminds you that a man's quest for freedom often ends up being a decision as to which prison suits him best.
That's damn profound.
That line is a metaphor for his woman's resentment towards him and her refusal to let him get close to her and risk being hurt by him again
Need cliffs notes or something, but what i dont need explained is how chivalrous this is. Its like theres no fear of losing with this. Its pure, something he created for loved ones everywhere. Romantic without reservation of how he felt. Very cool.
I Love This Sting 1985 Hit, "Fortress Around Your Heart," Which Became The #1 Rock Hit In America, A Top 10 Hit In America, And A Top 35 Adult Contemporary Hit In America.
9/7/2022-still love this haunting song❤️❤️❤️❤️
Best song on a great LP! Thanks for posting this! Great audio too!
God sting is a great fucking writer.
What if... You built the fortress around your own heart?
Doesn't matter what year you listen in, it still makes sense. I hope all those rappers and pop song glittertots who sampled 'Shape of My Heart' are paying their due. Sting should be a gazillionaire by now, just on that!
love singer/bassist
He still is the best
it's raining outside right now so I started singing this and had to hear it.
Complex harmony at verses
Great song!
my favorite song
The timing of this songs U.S. release was perfect..... blustery, grey cold day in late fall...
Thanks for laying out the lyrics.... I always thought he was saying....."or, can I fill your chasm?".... and I'm thinking " how the hell did he get that past the censors ?
Such gorgeous lyrics.
Love Sting!!!🥰👍
I love progressive rock....lost art
love it
Peace out man~❤🙏
Among several songs, today, this one reminds me most of Elliot Sumner, and, interestingly, of The Police, too, the late Police.
@blogdemarti hey are you speaking spanish? sorry for being nosy but i think that gracias means thank you. oh and by the way to the maker of the video it was awesome!!!
