Lyrics:
You consider me the young apprentice
Caught between the Scylla and Charibdis
Hypnotized by you if I should linger
Staring at the ring around your finger
I have only come here seeking knowledge
Things they would not teach me of in college
I can see the destiny you sold
Turn into a shining band of gold
I'll be wrapped around your finger
I'll be wrapped around your finger
Mephistopheles is not your name
But I know what you're up to just the same
I will listen hard to your tuition
And you will see it come to its fruition
I'll be wrapped around your finger
I'll be wrapped around your finger
Devil and the deep blue sea behind me
Vanish in the air you'll never find me
I will turn your flesh to alabaster
When you find your servant is your master
And you'll be wrapped around my finger

Born in 1972 youngest of 6 kids. We would sit in the dining room after school doing our homework good songs like this would come on the radio we quick jump up and hit play/record button on my dads boombox and bootleg this song to play over and over…. That was living!
Wow almost exactly the same as me. Oldest of four kids. We would do the exact same thing.
todos en diferentes lugares del mundo y la misma época haciendo las mismas actividades.
and how much we hate the annoucer keep talking while the song already started.... hahahahahah
Awesome I'm the youngest of 6 Born in 1966, Peace out...
1972 representing ❤
From a songwriting perspective, this is a masterclass in dynamics. Each of the three masters up their game in the 3rd verse, building the song to a crescendo that’s essentially unmatched in popular music. It’s not about volume. It’s not about tempo - but it is (as Jeff Porcaro would say) about “lope.” The song leaps ahead in the third verse - starting the with bass line, under the “Devil and the deep blue sea behind me” lyric - that’s a perfect “on ramp” to what’s about to come. Stewart plays hi-hat and rim clicks up to this point, but then erupts with tasty snare fills, kick drum and ride cymbal (on the chorus) that elevates the song. Andy’s (added) guitar part sounds like an alarm blaring: it’s subtle, but it’s a great guitar “hook” alerting listeners to the upcoming chorus. And the lyrics leading into the third chorus are among Sting’s best (and that’s saying something): “I will turn your face to alabaster: when you'll find your servant is your master: you'll be wrapped around MY finger.” What a brilliant twist! The whole song comes alive, with each musician playing an equal part in building the dynamics. This is how songs can, and should “move”. It’s not quantized. It’s not even about tempo. It’s about chops, mastery of instruments, and songwriting. Thank you Sting, Andy and Stewart.
Wow!
If I were to add a word to summarize your point of view, would "modulation" be adequate?
You just helped me appreciate great drumming!!
Amazing assessment!
On the fkn dot man! Its my favorite Sting song period

SOOO GOOD...2024
This was one of my mother's favorite songs and music videos when I was growing up. She always commented on how she thought how pretty this video is. She passed back in February 2024, and even now I cry when I hear this song. I miss her everyday. Love you mom ❤
You just made me cry, but in a good way❤
This is very sad your mother passed away such a short time ago. Both my mom and dad have been gone for some years now. I can say that with certainty: your mother(her words and deeds)will still live in your heart and thoughts. We will be praying that you have comfort in the hard days ahead. Blessings.
God bless you and God bless her! She is still with you! This is a beautiful song from the Era I grew up in. Continue listening to this masterpiece for yourself and mother.
Oh my heart, I'm 65 now and I adore this song. I lost my Mum when I was three. We could have been good friends.
Very sorry for your loss. The Police were definitely one of those bands who not only created excellent music…they were one of the rare few who actually created pure magic.
Proud 80's kid here! This is one phenomenal masterpiece.
Ditto to all of that!!!
55 year old lady here who has loved The Police from the moment I first heard them. I was about 9 yrs old and "Walking on the Moon" was on some Saturday morning TV show - I was immediately HOOKED! I had some very dark times when I was a kid but I SWEAR - the music, talent and lyrics these gentlemen gave us actually saved my life! I have EVERY album they ever made (both vinyl and CD) and I also had the privilege of seeing them perform live in London several years ago. There are billions of singers/songwriters and musicians out there BUT seldom are there people that can do all 3 (i.e. sing, play AND write good lyrics)! Stewart, Andy and Sting, however, have more talent in their little fingers than most of us have in our whole bodies. Love you guys and thank you so very much! xxx
Thank you Samantha. you have expressed it so wonderfully. I am the same. Nicholas
I was very attached to their music about a year or do after Roxanne was released, since I was 12.
56 now
You are not alone on this ! I am 53 years old and have loved the police ever since i first heard them when i was a child in the last 70s
These guys are a super tallent!
I listen to the police whenever i need to reminisce my childhood/teenage years
55. Zenyatta Mondatta was my first ever album. Wow… had to listen to Wrapped around your finger…. Masters for 👍🏽
Stewart Copeland is a calculated mastermind on the drums. Not a hit too little, not a hit too much.
Well said...

Copeland is absolute genius.... GOAT.

Yeah he's pretty good.
songs like this only come once in a lifetime
I agree but I think it would still have done good even in 2024 just because this band did things very different and different is so awesome and still worth doing!!!!!

But last a lifetime in one's psyche.

And they remain in our hearts forever
Well here I am in 2025 still listening. I am stuck in the 80's and couldn't be happier!!
Melissa, the Police were one of the best bands of the 80's in my opinion, you have good taste in, I am a rock and roll singer myself, and a Russian Orthodox choir man.
You have very good taste in music, sometimes my brain runs faster than my typing..... Causing me to leave words out I want in the sentences.
When you find your servant is your master... Absolute gold lyrics
My favorite part of the song !
I love this part. It's like a complete change in the story

Their work is still somehow incredibly underrated even today in 2024. So many different styles, no two albums the same. This is a masterpiece in anyone's era or language.
They are not underrated at all, anyone who knows about music from this era knows how massive and amazing they were/are.

It is a gorgeous song.

Only Sting can effortlessly slip in lyrics about Mephistopheles and the Scylla and Charybdis into a rock song. Genius!!

@janeydever752 yes, it is
Came here from Rick Beato's conversation just to hear that lyric that makes Stewart hate this song so much!
"I will turn your face to alabaster..."
An incredible change of power. It went from “I’ll be wrapped around your finger” to “you’ll be wrapped around my finger”. When I found the true message of the song, it just hit so much harder. Truly incredible.

THE POLICE was one of the best things of the 80s. Today I am 67 years old, but in 1985, I worked in a bank in the city of Rio de Janeiro/Brazil, and I asked for a gift from a hidden friend - Christmas thing , in Brazilian cities. A vinyl record - nothing more and nothing less than Synchronicity - one of the best records ever made. Decades later I bought it on CD.
One of the best songs ever written, lyrically and musically.
By a fantastic band
Well what do u expect?? They are British after all 😊👍🇬🇧

And the russians too..what a coinsidence the history repeats.
Most definitely
"Caught between Scylla and Charybdis," lyrics like this - 🙌🙌🙌
When the song reaches its peak with, "I will turn your face to alabaster, when you find your servant is your master." So good!
This song always reminds me of an era gone by when music was music. Growing up, I had a chance to listen to all music. And I am thankful for music, like many great artists that I tuned into as a kid, a teenager, a young adult, and now as a 57 year old young woman. It's amazing how songs bring back memories, good or bad.
I am 47. I do agree to your comments

Stewart Copeland’s drumming is insanely perfect in this song!!
Dude is one of the top 10 drummers in the world.
i play this as a cover on my roland electronic drum klt... yeah Copeland's drumming style is unique to itself...he copied no one with his signature sound, which I find refreshing!
Love how he just holds out on that snare. Dynamics!
My favorite drummer
You can say he was inspired by a lot of reggae drummers like Carlton Barret, Sly Dunbar and more. Reggae drummers play in that style.
One of the best videos by The Police.. directed by Godly and Creame... A masterpiece... Timeless
3:18 The way the finale builds up is phenomenal. Goosebumps. Always.
Props to Sting's bassline. That's what's building the climax
It's the absolute best...then Stewart starts going off at 3:33 and it's just incredible.
I always get this vivid image of the former master in a dark room, with the servant's voice booming from all directions, taunting him, saying "You'll never find me!" And then he strikes in a flash of light.
Devil worship tho
There is a reason for this, you can't outrun the devil and the deal you made. You think you can, so sting wrote it in hopes he was more powerful and could leave it all behind. You cannot, the song puts a spell like most that's why it is magic, evil and powerful. It's why we listen over and over. Look at the most repeated section on the UA-cam line..it starts at 3:18
Still a great song after almost 40 years. The Synchronicity album is a masterpiece!
Especially Synchronicity 2 (Reprise)

That moment, exactly
Same!
If you listen closely, this is the moment when the lyrics change too. It changes from him being the guy running for her (I'll be wrapped...), to the guy becoming the "master", letting go (You'll be wrapped...) and reclaiming his power. Even the listener feels the shift in feelings!
Yeah, Copeland had such a killer snare sound, just cuts through and rocks the whole tune.

@@matthewb9955 The Police were actually one of the biggest grossing bands in the 80s. They weren't even in the "just as good as any other band" club they were in a league of their own both in live ticket sales and income which is why they aren't mentioned among the others; they are not comparable, particularly when the musicianship in the 80s was on the decline due to the increased use of sampling and drum machines and less of a need for actual talent.

Already here, 42 years ago.
I gotta say, I've always been impressed with this video set.
As a triple fire sign, and a person obsessed with candles and firelight, this video had me captivated, along with the seductive song.
How they didn't set the set on fire is beyond me.
I love how Stewart has his own little avenue cubby for his kit. ❤
The whole thing is great. This song pops into my head randomly even now, monthly at least.
It was a good time in my life.
Also, at 60, I've been feeling a need for sunglasses like Gordon wears in the video. Except mine need to be Rx these days, lol.
There are certain 80’s songs that give me an overwhelmingly painful and bittersweet sense of nostalgia. This is definitely one of them
With u on that babe
Let me have a girlfriend
Yes indeed.... I agree
Indeed. Sting himself, was going through one of the most heartbreaking times of his life, when this album was recorded. "Wrapped around your finger", "King of pain" and "Every breath you take" are all about the pain of his divorce from his first wife.

When I hear The Police I am reminded of a beautiful girl I knew back in the 80’s in my class and she loved The Police.
Sadly alcohol took her and she is gone now. Sad to me, I always wanted better for her. But when a song from the Police comes on it almost always reminds me of her.
Sorry to here that ☹️🙁😕😔
Aww that is so sad, so sorry 😢 she now knows u cared..
She lives on through their music brother.
I offer my condolences.
Sorry for your lose
The music has laid back island vibes. 🏝️
It's supposed to have those vibes, the police based their original sound off of those vibes.
God is on our side.
Listened to it when I was 16. Knew it was a special song. Now I'm an old man it makes me sad how quickly life passes us by.
agreed

We must be very close in age,....I think we all mourn our youth,...but it's ok,....
Got the same ❤❤
such an atmospheric, mysterious, dark, yet warm song, it paints a beautiful landscape in one's mind with Sting's articulate, thought provoking lyrics, his deep bass, Stewart's tasteful, percussive drumming, and Andy's melodic flourishes, this is a masterpiece
" I will turn your face to alabaster, when you'll find your servant is your master..."
pure genius.. one of my all time favorites, this band and song will always hold a special place in my heart, this was my childhood
I just heard this beautiful piece of art for the very first time ever today, and I absolutely love it. God, I love the 80's.
No auto tune and made very organically. A true beautiful song. Timeless. And so 80s.
I'm sorry you had to wait so long for the experience.
How is th is possible, was you stu ck on a deset island till last week??????????????
Watch the live performance from the reunion tour! Stewart goes all out on all his toys.
Was in basic training in 1983, and every breath u take was number one hit,it helped get me through the intensive training, then later the whole album was a masterpiece, proud to have served awsome music awsome times
The Police was a group that helped define the 80's. I miss the 80's.
Yes 80's was a magnificent year
Police YES llll
Me too, we truly live in the end days now.
39 years later you fully realize how masterful this piece of music it was
You are SO right! Although I loved it in 1983 I didn't fully realise that this record is quality in every way! Genius lyrics & a truly haunting melody that lingers for ages on the playout of the track - For me, this magical min or so of instrumental with stunning percussion just takes me to better place.....1983 again!
Right
@@LoinkyToinky starting at 82
I never stopped KNOWING that this is magical and masterful. Never stopped listening.
Ubetcha, fir me, it hit me (this song did hard when I was about 30) so sing was about 20 or a little more old
All that amazing sound, and only three members, great musicianship....
Isn't real music that doesn't rely on autotune just amazing?
👌
+Bobbynibbles it sure is ! our kids don't know what good music is
+Bobbynibbles Now you're talking!!! back in the day Only True Talent took the stage!
Like Tiny Tim.
I love how Sting dances singing plus all the candles so magically beautiful for a music video
This is the best song in the universe... I can't explain the feeling I get when I hear this amazing song. My dad loved listening to this song, but now that he's gone it just reminds me of what once was...

I heard this song for the first time on *MTV* .
It has such a mellow and easy flowing rhythm.

That it does. I was a teen in the 80s also.
My mum bought The Police Greatest Hits years ago. Invisible Sun, Spirits in a Material World and this song are my favourite tracks on the album. Still are.
Old is Gold❤
You'll never hear music like this again!! SIMPLY MAGIC!!
You just don't get intelligence in music anymore. The likes of Dylan, Lennon, Jagger, Townsend, Bowie, Bush, Sting were seriously bright people able to delve into high culture for inspiration. They have no modern equivalents.
Macgyver era bravo jeje
They had people wrapped around their finger back then and still do.
I agree.
@@TommyZeus-i8n Agreed. Music was way better then. So was sports, movies, tv shows, and comedy.
Stewart Copeland’s drumming is...sublime.
At 3:30, in the softer “Devil and the deep blue sea” section, and right after the next line, “Vanish in the air you’ll never find me”, Copeland brings it all back in with a single snare flam, and it’s so impeccably tasteful, so effective, so impactful in its simplicity...and so very perfect for the song, that it’s stunning.
So many other drummers would have tried to fill that space (or really wanted to) with a busy, thundering (and yawningly predictable) huge drum fill...
But Copeland? Nope.
With that one flam on the snare, he “says” more than any 20 piece kit drummer could ever hope to present by pounding out some “big” fill, and rounding half a dozen toms in a pseudo Phil Collins “In The Air Tonight” style.
Part of being a great player, particularly those that play as part of a band, is to play in ways that best serve the song, instead of serving themselves (and their own egos) with a “look how many push-ups I can do!” bragging style in their playing.
Copeland is an amazing drummer to be sure, and it’s not that he can’t play technically complex fills or drum patterns, (because he absolutely can), but...he’s also a great MUSICIAN, because he has that rare gift of playing in a way that is always so very tasteful, and with parts that always serve any song he’s playing so incredibly well.
IMO.
🙏
Nice observation. I'm going to have another listen.
That single, potent, explosive flam is the pivot point of the track and is simple, subtle genius. Watch the recent Japan version too for more of it when Stu comes down from the huge array of percussion to pick up the bridge on his kit………just awesome.
@@nicprs5109 - thanks for the suggestion, I will definitely check that out. 🙏
The other thing about that snare flam that I forgot to mention, is that Copeland doesn’t (predictably) hit a crash cymbal on the downbeat after it, and that makes the flam all the more elegant.
Sometimes (often, in fact), it’s what ISN’T played - a drum fill, a guitar lead, a bass riff, etc. - that can be far more tasteful (and way more effective and impactful) than any fancy drum fill or shredding guitar riff could ever convey.
Stewart Copeland is a master of dynamics, and part of that mastery is recognizing both when and what NOT to play, and in letting a song breathe by allowing an exquisite sense of space to exist.
IMHO.
🙏😊
@@donnythompson408 ua-cam.com/video/43l4ksaD3vA/v-deo.html. I completely agree with you. And as I reflect on all the drummers I’ve listened to over my life……it’s quite possible that Stu C is by far the most exciting and dynamic……because he’s so different…. And I love some of the greats. 🙏
Fuckin A man.
" I will turn your face to alabaster, when you find your servant is your master... "
Anyone who enjoys lyrics or writing poetry or music knows how epic that lyric is !
Yes
Here! Here!
Beauty moment
Absolutely. And it isn't just that line, but the whole verbal buildup to it (and the instrumental buildup too, of course!). Starting with "Devil and the deep blue sea behind me."
One of the thing I absolutely *love* in poetry is the reversal of fortunes! Servant becoming master and vice versa! O fortuna!
I was a HUGE fan of Every Breath You Take, but there is no doubt that this is my favorite song by The Police. The lyrics and the music combine to make a timeless classic.
They'll never be a better era than the 80's
Nope

What I love about The Police is not only the incredible songs in their catalog but Sting's insightful lyrics such as this song. Beautiful how the two verses describes how he is strung along by someone only to have it turn around them at the end. Spectacular!
And how much can I add about Stewart's tasty drumming throughout this song? I love how he comes in with a flam in the third verse and then driving the song to its lyrical climax. That fill leading to the "Oh! (Then) you'll be wrapped around my finger" chorus is so simple, but so right! Amazing!
Hi Vitreous. You are such a beautiful woman and I would love to be wrap around you finger and remain there forever!
Quite agree. Copeland shows remarkable taste. While he could obviously show off, he restrains himself, adds what the song requires; no more, no less. As a consequence every beat counts; every fill has significance. If only more drummers exhibited similar judgement!
Phil Smith Copeland is probably one of the best drummers ever, but has not such recognition by many because he is not into hitting 1000 times per second... His tecnique is flawless.
This song is particularly intense and meaningful not only because of the divine lyric but even for the amazing music involved.
the drum fill at 3:55 makes life worth living for me haha, Paiste makes amazing cymbals, great song, great lyrics, superb musicianship, and music that comes along only once in a lifetime, this band was magic
I'm 54....awww, the memories. Sting is an extraordinary songwriter. ❤❤❤
