  • The lyrics to "Shape of my Heart" by Sting on the Ten Summoner's Tales album.
This is what Sting said in his lyrics book:
"Dominic Miller, an extraordinary musician and a dear friend, has been my guitarist since 1990. One day a week, he'd come down to visit me at Lake House and we'd try out rough song ideas that either of us had had in the interim. During one of these visits, he turned up with a beautiful guitar riff. I was very taken by it, and he and I worked on shaping it into a song for the rest of the morning.
That afternoon, he asked me what I thought the song would be about. I said I didn't know, but I would take a walk and try to figure it out. I took off along the riverbank for a mile or so, through the woods and up to the sheep meadow, then headed back as the sun was dipping to the west.
When I got back, the whole song was written in my head.
Dominic now thinks that I find lyrics under a rock somewhere....
He could, of course, be right."
Like this video (or dislike it, if you must), comment, share it, or even tell me which Sting song I should do next. In whatever case, thanks so much for watching.

For anyone who wants to know the meaning of this song:
Sting (from a 1993 promotional interview): "I wanted to write about a card player, a gambler who gambles not to win but to try and figure out something; to figure out some kind of mystical logic in luck, or chance; some kind of scientific, almost religious law. So this guy's a philosopher, he's not playing for respect and he's not playing for money, he's just trying to figure out the law - there has to be some logic to it. He's a poker player so it's not easy for him to express his emotions, in fact he doesn't express anything, he has a mask, and it's just one mask and it never changes."

Yes indeed, very beautiful song and quite philosophical. To the surface it seems he's just singing about playing cards, but if thought about it, cards can be played in many ways, and how you play your cards, partly defines you as a person, some play greedy for the money, some play to study the opponent, some play smart and patient and so on.

He deals the cards as a meditation
And those he plays never suspect
He doesn't play for the money he wins
    He don't play for respect
He deals the cards to find the answer
    The sacred geometry of chance
The hidden law of a probable outcome
    The numbers lead a dance
I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier
I know that the clubs are weapons of war
I know that diamonds mean money for this art
But that's not the shape of my heart
He may play the jack of diamonds
He may lay the queen of spades
He may conceal a king in his hand
While the memory of it fades
I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier
I know that the clubs are weapons of war
I know that diamonds mean money for this art
But that's not the shape of my heart
    That's not the shape

to me it is a political lovesong to the children of the world .. the shape of his heart means his position towards the worldsystem, in other words, a sad protest against greed (diamonds) war (spades) and politics (clubs) .. "and if i told you that i loved you, you maybe think there is something wrong. im not a man of too many faces (like most people) the mask i wear is one" (the heart is one and for ever) .. his poetry's message in that case is: be authentic look around and be conscious about the state the world is, preferably in the silence of the heart, while looking around who your real friends are … beautiful. thank you sir.

To me this song has so much meaning! It hit so hard and it made me cry, i guess everyone will interpret this song in their own way, to me, while in active addiction I was this poker player, always hiding my emotions, always playing others, they never knew what cards I was holding, the feelings I had... sometimes I would pretend to have hearts, other times diamonds, other times, clubs... depending who I was playing with and I always had my mask on so they couldn't see that in fact I don't have a poker face because I just pretended to have one, the truth was, I was living in fear, scared to show myself, scared to show what cards I was really holding. The only one that could see through that mask was my ex, she made me feel vulnerable and for the 1st time I actually loved someone enough to show my true feelings but because of that mask, there was so many mixed signs that she could not believe me and I lost her, because of that poker player I always pretended to be. My advice, do not ever be scared to show your true self, it brings way more harm than good

Jordi, what you wrote is an amazing piece of art in itself. I related to it, more than you could possibly know.
I’m sorry for the Loss of your love & struggle you had. I’m also proud of you for having the heart and ability to see and understand yourself. Most of the world , aren’t that honest with themselves… they’d rather fool themselves with Lies, than face the Truth of who they really are.
THANK YOU for sharing your story.

@raymondcarroll3876 tank you, I think that more often than not, we feel lost, but fear does such a good job at fooling us, at telling us that in fact we aren't lost and that everything is ok, I read somewhere something amongst these lines " fear makes us believe that our comfort is more important than our happiness" I spent most of my life believing a lie, believing that I was someone I really wasn't, being comfortable under a fake skin. Now I can proudly say that fear doesn't control me, I am still scared, don't get me wrong, but I am strong enough to admit it and face those fears head on. I hope everything goes well for you in life. You are worth it! Keep fighting, brother

Stings music reminds me of when you go abroad to Spain. On a red hot day. And you go to one of those street market places. And then you hear one of those street performers playing a Spanish acoustic guitar. That what it reminds me of I love that Spanish influenced acoustic guitar sound. It's nice I find it very relaxing. Sting is awesome he's got some really good music I like it.

I'm at a pivotal moment in my life and this song is helping me with my direction, my direction on MY path that I have chosen-Or am I just following my destiny? Thanks to every person and everything that has brought this into my life. I am Blessed! nameste
