You are the first instructor to answer the question I have had for years. "How do you determine your length guide for layers"????? In every tutorial other than yours the instructor just plows in without any explanation for how they arrive at a length decision. Thanks so much.
Yay! You're so welcome! You can also determine layer length by preference or facial features you'd like to enhance, but this one is a great tool and standard to use as well, especially if the hair is very long. We hope this helps!
Been doing hair for 14 years, mostly as a barber though. Im starting at a new shop where i will be getting back into womans cuts a lil more and this vid helped so much!!!
I really appreciate this video. Most of my layer cuts are ladies with med length hair and I handle those fine....hair this length sometimes challenges me if they want layers. This is an excellent video to help me finesse my technique.
Cassie, You truly are the absolute best when it comes to teaching. I have watched a lot of videos lately and you are the only one that seems to really explain what your doing and why. I cant tell you how many videos dont even speak at all No explanation whatsoever. I found myself watching every video I could find from you even if I never plan to cut particular cuts, I just feel like there is something I can learn from everything you expain. Thank You for sharing!!!
Excellent tutorial & teacher . So easy to follow . Always find it intimidating handling this much hair , but your methodical approach gives me something to aspire to & practise . Many thanks from Australia ! 👏🏆

Finally! This is the most sensible long layered hair cut I’ve found on UA-cam so far! Most I’ve seen are horrible in that they are just butchering the hair into a choppy thin mess. I think the problem is they think you must cut a lot of hair off to make layers & truth is you don’t! The biggest mistake I see most make on long hair esp thin long hair is not leaving enough weight at the base of the hair so it ends up a stingy mess. But most of what you did is how I also learned to cut long hair layers. I don’t do hair anymore for others but I have long mid back fine hair so I deal with it every single day! I also have wavy hair & use bleach highlights & live in a very humid climate which means over layering is going to be a frizz ball with whacky sprigs everywhere. So my pro tip under my circumstances is I do basically what you did except I don’t go as far down with the layers as the piece behind the ear as a guide. I keep my layers & my guides at the parietal arch & occipital bones & above. I want a heavy base line all around my head from the high bones down. * I also never point cut or use thinning shears except for a little on my short disconnected bangs. The reason I avoid any thinning is because with fine wavy hair in humidity I want it as slick & blunt cut as possible to avoid random whisps. And I don’t want it to look like split ends but like blunt fresh cut ends even in the layers. It just looks healthier when blunt cut. Thanks for sharing & for the best long layer technique on UA-cam! 🏆
Great video. This is the exact haircut that I want/aim for. Given that it's a pretty simple long layered cut, it's amazing how hard it is to find quality references. It's good to have verification of the things I'm doing right and to clarify some things I wasn't confident about. My waist length hair can rest easy tonight😆

This was a great tutorial. I’ve always struggled with layering my hair. After washing your video I’m a lot better. I liked the song playing in the background. Who’s it by?
Its gorgeous I love it . I'm glad I seen this cuz I'm getting my hair dresser to watch this and do it the same way I don't want to much of my length cut . This is really nice .
hi... Im a student and I was taught to use a comb to do blunt cuts. Seems easier to use fingers. And you start layering from the top of crown towards the bottom. I was shown to do the opposite, but this method seems easier to follow.
Looks amazing! ❤ tried this on myself 2x (I know, not the best idea)😅 and my front ends up having just short pieces and is way too thin ...😂 how do you still have so much length?
Wow !! stunning cutting skills Great cut, rare to find someone that can actually cut a precise hair cut nowadays everyone just don't care about sectioning the hair at all... No precise haircuts in my area please bring them back this lady is genius 💜💜💜💜

I’ve been doing hair for a while now 😆 and I’ve never put effort into practicing to style hair with that curling iron. It feels it’s not for my hand .. I only use Marcelle irons and it’s just perfect for my fingers and finish fast curling hair. Foe some reason I just love my Marcelle’s. Also once in a while I come Back here to watch perfection I really love Kenra education. Thanks again 🥰
Oh my goodness, what a great tutorial! Love the tip about how to determine the shortest layer, Ive always used the nilly willy determination lol. Beautiful model and beautiful cut! Thanks for sharing 😊
Yes you can! You will need to keep in mind the type of curl during your consultation as well as its elasticity & elongation as this could effect the curly results when dry.
Great video. Sooo much better than the first 5 I found in search. Question tho: You trimmed to the length you wanted, then when layering it looked like you layered all the way down the back of the head to create a new length in the back. What did I miss? I never know if I should taper all the way to the bottom or leave an under section untouched.
Hi, Katy! For long layers, you can cut length first. Cassi measured from the side point to make sure that she doesn't actually cut into the length. The idea for this particular approach is to cut the layers while maintaining as much of the perimeter untouched as possible. We hope this helps!
Theoretically yes! You'll want to adjust your guide for the shortest layer, but the angles, over-directions, elevations, etc. can still be done the same!
Love all the looks on your UA-cam channel. Can you please ask the stylist to please show the styling of the hair as well and what styling products were used so I can buy them thank you.
Hi, Mechelle! The products that were used and shown in the video are Kenra Platinum Luxe Shine Oil, Kenra Platinum Blow-Dry Spray, and Kenra Design Spray 9. There are also links to each of the products in the description of this video so you can view performance attributes and ingredients before purchasing. Thanks for watching!
I would have appreciated greater detain when it comes to the front layers and how to blend them into the haircut. I feel like that is missing. I really want to give this technique a try and I love Kenya’s education videos.
This was really wonderful and filled with such valuable info and so easy to follow! Quick question: Are square layers best for everyone who has fine hair but a lot of density?
It depends on the effect you are looking for. If your goal is to maintain strong peremiter then yes for sure. I love a vertical layers though when I want a lot of movement and specfic styles like shags.
Are you bringing the hair center when you are connecting the back to the front? I couldn’t tell with the camera angles. I know it’s 90degrees up but are you over directing to the nose at all for the front?
Nice outcome .but my hands /arms will be sore afterwards 😂 I’m a petite HD . Ok I have a Q? The new millennium method or technical approach They are teaching customization once you’ve done jour regular blow dry. You only did cross check on wet hair ? Unless you did it off camera? But it looks just perfect 👍 thanks 🙏
Hi, Silver! You can absolutely do additional detailing, thinning, or finishing in the cut after the blow dry. Some people like to cross check prior, some like to do it after, but how you choose is up to you! Thank you!
Hi Tamara! Depending on what look you are going for-- yes, pulling the hair out horizontally versus vertically from the head will affect how long and how many layers there are. Be mindful though although everyone is different, if you only pull out horizontally from the sides of the head and don't address the weight at the top, it may appear quite bulky and heavy in the crown.

This sectioning allows for maximum length to be left without cutting into the perimeter. When following the head shape you will encounter the baseline which can leave it whispy espescially on finer hair.
