    Interesting issue that gets a lot of attention among owners and non-owners alike.
    In this video i share the full functionality i get with my current setup. I must point out that for those not familiar with Bluetooth, you "pair" devices only once, and then every time thereafter they will "connect" automatically when turned on. On occasion, there is an error of one sort or another and you must redo the pairing operation.

    I think you hit the nail on the head here, I have read many many comments about pairing helmet audio systems with BMW bikes...I ran into a video by a different manufacturer of audio components, and they said many of the problems lie in the fact that people think you have to pair both helmets to the bike, which if your NOT using the BMW helmet comm system you can't do that. You can only pair one helmet comm system to the bike if your using Cardo, Sena, etc...

    Recently having acquired a 2016 R1200RT with Nav VI, and Interphone Tour headsets I watched this with interest, and attempted to follow the instructions.
    For the benefit of others this is what I did and found :
    I paired the pillion Tour headset to the rider's Tour headset and established intercomm communications.
    I paired the bike Audio to the rider's Tour headset (after switching off the pillion Tour), and listed to music in the headset from the bike
    The pillion then turned their headset back on.
    Neither the rider nor the pillion can hear anything over the intercomm until either switches the intercomm on (single press, rear button), whereupon the music is cutoff for the rider and the intercomm works instead. Switching the intercom back off re-enables hearing music. The pillion never hears the music. Thus a manual intervention is required to switch between music and intercomm, the intercomm does not auto interupt the music.
    I then paired from my Android smartphone to the Nav VI in order to gain access to live traffic information on the Nav through mobile data on the smartphone.
    Note: I am not seeking to hear Nav voice commands (there are simply too many, I find them distracting), nor share music to the pillion (who prefers travelling silence with the odd chat on the intercomm). I certainly am not attempting to use the headset for phone calls.
    Nor am I criticising the video; I am simply reporting my findings for the benefit of others.
    It would be nice to hear music with auto interrupt from the intercom but that may be beyond the Interphone tour capabilities. That might also be sensitive to sneezes, coughs, throat clearing and possibly any wind-noise in the helmet microphone cutting out the music.
    I am not claiming this is the best way to setup this combination, anyone with direct experience of this equipment who can provide explicit instructions is welcome to add them.
    I will ignore the "why not try this, why not try that" type of comment - you are just making assumptions and guessing.
    Finally I note that the pairing is a process initiated by one device, I believe each single device can only initiate a single active pairing at any one time (correct me if I'm wrong), thus I believe the double ended arrows in the video really ought to show from which end the pairing is initiated.
    I hope this helps someone, please don't ask me a load of questions about what else does and doesn't work, I'm not offering to answer them.

    Hi Chris, great video.
    I just went to a '16 RT from '13 GTL. I have the BMW Comm since '13. I went that way for compatibility. May have been a mistake. On the GTL i was able to tether my iPhone to the bike using the auxiliary cable and an adapter in the fairing compartment. My phone, 6S, doesn't fit in the compartment on the RT. I bought a Nano which fits in nicely and shows up on the Source display as iPod but I can only play the songs in rotation and cannot shuffle. I was able to shuffle on the GTL with my phone. Any thoughts?
    I tried using bluetooth to connect my phone to the communicator but haven't been successful.

    I have been troubled by this very issue of not being able to connect my Sena 20s with my BMW K1600, the Nav 5, and my cell phone until now. Thank you very much. BTW, not even my local BMW dealer could help me connect all three things and make it work. I believe my issue was that I did not initially turn off the Bluetooth on my cell phone prior to trying it.

    Thank you for your efforts! I have the 2017 RT. Purchased Thursday the Schuberth M1 helmet along with Schuberth M1 SRC System. Plug and play sort of speak. I have the NAV 6 along with iPhone 6, would love to adjust my volume without putting my hand with gloves on the back of helmet searching for the cardo system volume controls. Currently I have it connected to my phone versus the NAV6. Because it's so new here , no videos exist yet on proper set up and usage. The material that came with the SRC system is just a few sentences. If you know of a website or UA-cam I can watch I'd love to watch or read as I spent about $800 for this new helmet and cardo SRC system. Best

    Chris, thank you!! I have been waiting so long for someone to solve this never ending issue. Could you answer a couple other questions I have that I don't know if they're myths I've read or absolutely true. I am purchasing a K1600GTL next week and would love to deal with these issues. #1. According to BMW, you must purchase the Schuberth C3 pro helmet with their very expensive SRC Bluetooth kits to reach full rider and passenger functionality. Supposedly any other helmet or Bluetooth set, such as Sena will only pair with the rider. #2 - Even if that's true, is it possible to purchase different helmets, the Sena 20S dual pak, hook the rider in totally as you have done, then let the passenger either hook into their phone or yours while having a conversation with them through the Sena unit? My wife doesn't necessarily need to hear the nav commands or any phone calls. Any insight you could give would just about answer any remaining questions. Thanks so much for your very informative videos!

      +A Poole this is debated and complained about continually on the BMW forums. You are correct in that the direct phone and stereo functionality in the passenger lid can only be attained using the BMW communicator. AND the communicator only fits certain Schuberth lids. HOWEVER---You can bypass these 2 shortcomings by:
      1) pairing your intercom with the Nav V for cell phone connectivity. Your intercom of choice ideally will be able to stop intercom and music to take phone calls. Mine is a Q3 Cardo. Sena makes great systems and i am sure they offer that functionality as well.
      2) for stereo music to your passenger, you just need to choose an intercom that has a "music share" functionality. The Q3 does. Again, i am sure there are Sena models that do as well.
      After those 2 shortcomings are met , you should be good to go with all the same functionality of the BMW system.
      The only catch is that the K16 may have a different internal system than the R12-- so check the forums to get owner feedback-- the SENA system is popular, so it should not be hard to find.
      NOW---- I have been using my setup for several weeks, and i have noticed in practice that i find it easier (using the Q3) to keep my intercom on full duplex (no music interruption ) since i tend to talk with my passenger the whole ride-- i then choose to keep the speakers on the bike playing background music (the shield on the bike really keeps wind noise down). Most intercoms will still interrupt this duplex to give the driver nav prompts and phone calls. The passenger just gets a temporarily silent audio during these interruptions.
      I have also noticed that sometimes i have to turn off and on the loudspeakers at the beginning of a ride to reconnect with bluetooth for music when riding alone. This only takes a second, but it reminds me of how unstable bluetooth can be even when the system is paired and sorted.
      I drive a BMW car as well, and the bluetooth in it can get sketchy at times.

    Excellent video, as are all of yours. I bought a cardo pack talk system to take advantage of the voice activated commands and I love that function- it works well. The issue I have is the lack of volume on this setup. I always wear earplugs when I ride and I find that even with the phone and unit volume control turned all the way up it is very difficult to hear clearly (I use it mostly for phone calls) unless I’m riding at slow speed. Do you know of any way to improve this?

    • @kiki231000
      @kiki231000  4 роки тому

      Firstly -- you are wise for wearing ear protection. As I speak at national motorcycle events, i find myself having to repeat my words to the more seasoned riders...
      On the Cardo systems, as good as they are (stability, weather resistance, compatibility) , I have found they lack the volume of the Sena systems. I dare say that the Sena system, at full volume, is way too loud unless you have plugs in, and even then is full sound.
      So assuming you are going to stick with it, i can make a couple suggestions that might help-- but your results may vary --
      1) try lower NRR rated plugs -- remember that Decibels are not linear in comparison, so make your steps very minimal.
      2) I used BOSE Noise reducing buds with my Cardo and it was brilliant (instead of the helmet speakers). Some find them uncomfortable after longer rides -- so try passive reduction buds first (which are dramatically cheaper) -- several rubber tipped buds for under 40 bucks and they all did reasonably well.
      3) try padding under the speakers to push them closer to your ears-- this will make a surprising improvement.

I like to ride with music off my androld phone so i hook mine up a bit differently but lose the abliity to use the nav to see my calls. I won't using that function anyways while riding. I can use a thumbdrive as well to listen to music. I find that the sirus signal throught the headset to be of terrible quality. Not sure if you experienced the same thing.

      I can attest to the poor quality on the sat radio. This is a common complaint, but its not unique to the bike, or even BMW. I believe, in general, that the sound quality of satellite radio is poor to begin with, since the service provider digitizes an analog file in order to compress it and send it out in manageable sizes for your radio to process. There is loss in sound quality (hence the file format called "lossy"). Since your headset "digitizes" it an additional time , the poor quality becomes exacerbated. When i listen to Sat radio on the bike, its only through the speakers, unless talk radio, where the sound isn't as important to me.

    • @iham1
      @iham1 8 років тому +1

      Very true. I've cancelled my subscription to the sat radio on my vehicle's because of the compression and poor sound quality. I guess the sound quality isn't as important in a moving vehicle because of all the ambient noise from the road and car itself. Even with my old ears it's very discernible. Again Chris I really enjoy your videos.
      Cheers mate.
      John.

    Hi Chris, thank you very much for the video. I own this bike with the radio and the nav system and I'm about to change my intercoms.
    The issue I'm facing is that the seller currently provides me Cardo Intercoms FREECOM2 and FREECOM4. I don't know which one I should get to be able to set up my bike like in your video.
    Do you know anything about new Cardo's features? Thanks in advance.

    • @kiki231000
      @kiki231000  6 років тому

      Thanks for the note. I usually only post a video after i have personally tried and found success with a particular piece of equipment. As you mention above, Cardo revamped their line this year, and the models have all changed. I can therefore only offer you my thoughts on the whole thing, and cannot guarantee this system will work like the old system (which is not perfect, by the way)
      The Freecom 2 vs 4 -- i believe the 4 is only an additional value over the 2 if you have 2 bikes with a total of 4 users (2 riders and 2 passengers) . And if you never ride with a passenger or other bikes, then the Freecom 1 is probably the better choice.
      Other than that, from what i can read, you should be able to pair up the system like i have in my video (although you buy at your own risk).

    I have been using the RT Nav5 and radio blootooth for 2 years now for solo music/phone/gps. When switching helmets I often got frustrated with the radio failing to pair, I believe I have it worked out now. I have a hot weather and a cool weather helmet, each with a different Cardo unit. And when I switched, I couldn't get music to play because the radio endlessly searched for the newly paired helmet. Even though it said it was successfully paired, it wouldn't work until after I cleared the radio and the Cardo of paired devices and repaired everything. The solution was: 1)turn off Nav5 and phone bluetooth. 2) unpair all helmets (radio forgets previously paired devices). 3) reset cardo unit so it also forgets previously paired devices. 4) pair cardo unit bluetooth 1 to BMW radio 5) turn on phone bluetooth 6) turn on nav 5 7) pair cardo bluetooth 2 to nav 5. The Nav 5 and the phone remembered each other without issues.
    Maybe there is a better way, but doing it that way resulted in working system for one rider with music, phone, and GPS 5 out of 5 times.

      You got it Tom! I just last summer bought the 2018 RT and found the procedure in the audio manual that came with the bike to be exactly right , the way you got yours working. I have the Sena SMH10 and use it for everything, solo. The BMW audio guide book offers several different procedures for connecting everything. ( method #5 I believe I used, single rider with phone) I had to use the Sena pairing instructions instead of the BMW helmet the audio book mentions. Something I found was that when my bike was parked right next to the house during the procedure, it was picking up the bluetooth signals from the satellite TV system just inside the house. I had to roll out to the street to get away from that interference for it to finally work. Another tip, after it all is working well , I find that it helps a lot to power up the helmet comm system when suiting up and get it searching before powering up the bike. That may not be critical for everyone but with my Sena it worked daily for two weeks on a fall trip following that protocol.

      I find the BMW set is overpriced for what you get-- even the dealer agrees with me. Additionally, it is a Cardo system made under contract, or so I am told. However, you do get easier and more secure connection for the passenger to the music function.
      My advice would be to use either SENA or Cardo. You will get more for your money. Each brand has a host of models for different needs -- whether you need music or not, whether you are riding with a passenger or in a group of bikes, etc etc. I would recommend visiting their sites and choosing your model form what they offer.

    What about listening to music that is coming from the phone? Is it possible with such setup, and how’s the sound quality (I heard it’s pretty mediocre because the bike has outdated Bluetooth 2.0).

    • @kiki231000
      @kiki231000  4 роки тому

      In order to listen to music from your phone, you will need to connect to the wire interface (in the glove box on the right) , and then use the bluetooth on the bike to transfer that to your helmet. As far as audio quality, do you mean quality or quantity? the reason i ask is that some prefer volume over quality. I have an old, but high quality "stereo" system in my home with analogue-only input and processing. To me, THATS high quality sound. On the bike, with wind and road noise (albeit muted), digital compression at the source, and losses over wireless transfer, even the best bluetooth systems are only "ok" sound. Its stereo, the volume is adequate, and the frequency range is good -- so i am happy with it for what it is.
      As far as the 1250, I haven't gotten my hands on one yet to comment.

I put my musuc files into a file directory system that I like and it is selectible from the menu on the dash controlled by the wheel.
