Here's a little factoid that I don't think a lot of people know: Steve Cropper, who is playing guitar in the background for The Blues Brothers, was also the guitar player on the original recorded version by Sam & Dave.
The guy on the keyboards is none other than Paul Shaffer, who was the sidekick/bandleader to David Letterman in late night TV for 33 years. He was originally supposed to be involved in the film, but he had a scheduling conflict at the time of filming.
Near as I can tell this is the only time they did this song, yet it's, arguably their best known song. I believe that's because this was their first national coverage, they'd been touring and playing clubs but this was their first national audience.
Back when Saturday Night Live was great! I miss John Belushi
This is when singers and entertainers who performed on SNL were GOOD and had TALENT!
LOL they were actually actors, not singers but one of the funniest SNL skits....EVer seen the movie? Freaking hillarious. Look it up..."Blues Brothers." You won't regret. Seriously, Aretha Franklin, James Brown....wish I could name them all....Lots of stars.
You understand this was a comedy act from SNL, and a movie. The lead guitar is Steve Cropper, one of the best from his time.
THE ORIGINAL MEN IN BLACK!!!!
I was 10 or 11 when I first saw them sing this song. The way Belushi sang and performed it I thought he was singing "I am so mad," instead of "I'm a soul man." Thanks for recognizing an awesome performance.
Originally a Sam & Dave song brought back by the Blues Bros on Sat Night Live
John is on a Mission from God!! ❤️🔥
RIP, John Belushi. Such talent.
This is what I called America's music from the old days
I loved this band. I was at the show at Universal Amphitheatre when this album was recorded, actually at one of the two shows where the album was recorded. What a killer show!!! I of course recognized John and Dan though they introduced themselves as Jake and Elwood. They had not yet debuted the group so nobody had ever heard of them yet. I can't say enough about the band, absolutely outstanding!! One of my friends worked for Universal and asked me if I wanted to go to a concert. I asked "Who's Playing," she said you wouldn't know them if I told you but it is going to be a killer show, so I said yes and am I ever glad I did. Thank you for reacting to this.
The backup band with Steve Cropper on guitar and Duck Dunn on bass were part of the MG’s - the house band over at Stax records in Memphis. You’ve gotta watch the Blues Brothers movie- a complete homage to the best blues and soul singers.
They had a band so powerful it could turn goat (bleep) into gasoline
All I can say is that was entertaining as hell lol. Awesome
There was a time when SNL was fun. Crazy but fun. I was a big fan in these days and seen it when it first was aired.
They got some legends behind them as well!
Love this! ❤️
