It's 1976... my brother and I are watching a rerun of Don Kirschner's Rock Concert on TV and see band called "Mahogany Rush" that gets us all excited. A couple days later he goes to Orange Plaza Mall and mistakenly buys a newly released album by another 3 piece band called Rush. He brings home 2112 and we are both blown away! I then went out and found Mahogany Rush IV, which we also think is fantastic! We then spent weeks afterwards swapping the 2 albums back and forth. Ya gotta wonder about it... 2 power trios, both from Canada, both sharing the name "Rush", that released ground shaking albums the same year... 1976 was a good time to be a teenager!
@@mmk7340 thanks... my brother was so excited when he came home... I said "that's the wrong band- we were watching a band called Mahogany Rush". Decided to listen to his "mistake" anyway and became instant fans. Discovered 2 great "Rush" bands in the span of a week.
There is no weak Frank Marino album, he’s so damn good. I’m gonna go with The Power Of Rock And Roll. Ain’t Dead Yet has to be one of the best guitar oriented, rippin, hard rock songs of all time!
Was fortunate enough to meet Frank after one of his shows & he autographed my guitar! A genuinely humble human being who God blessed with gargantuan talent!
I agree- Frank Marino's whole catalog is a treasure chest of soulful and sincere music...he is a masterful stylist whose playing feels spontaneous and free... a truly rare quality
My first taste of Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush came in 1978 with the incredible and highly underrated 'LIVE' album. My mind was blown again by an incredible guitarist, the first being Hendrix, and I played that album to death, and I mean the grooves were worn down all the way. Tell Frank to put out a new edition of the 1978 'LIVE' album and add more tracks, I know there's a lot of early stuff out there that could make this a double album, which we should have got the first time ;) great ranking once again Pete, stay safe and keep rockin'
Great GREAT Frank Marino! Been a fan since 1981. My Top5: 1. The Power of Rock'n'Roll 2. Juggernaut 3. World Anthem 4. What's Next 5. IV All other albums are very good IMO & all live albums too are amazing. Cheers!
Hi Pete. Frank's rendition of King Bee live on California Jam II is the most brilliant version and impossible to do any better IMHO. Thanx for an excellent post.
He is the best all his albums are awesome no bad albums. All his Live albums are the best. And don’t forgot his latest dvd/blu-ray Live At The Agora Theatre. I saw him back in the day’s in Amsterdam wow so great. He is the best. Now waiting for new material. Great review Pete👍
Strange Universe is a masterpiece and my number one. Agree there isn’t a bad album in his catalog. Frank Marino definitely in the top twenty all time greats. Don’t overlook Child of the Novelty a guitar workout of the highest order.
I have to agree, Strange Universe and Mahog Rush IV are the two best. Been a fan since the night I first saw him on Don Kirchner's Rock Concert in 1975 i think it was.
Pete, I have to say I'm a Frank Marino FREAK and i absolutely love "Power of Rock and Roll" and "Whats Next" as my number 1 and 2. Can't seem to change it up. Those are solid in my book, and I also love the album called" Eye of the Storm" which by the way you made a tiny error by calling it "Full Circle" LOL.
Rock's most underrated guitar player in my view, for me What's Next is my favourite album. I first heard Frank in 1978, when I bought California Jam 2 album, ironically because it had Ted Nugent and Santana on it, but it was Frank that blew me away. From that moment I went back and got his catalogue, havent missed one since
Saw Mahogany Rush in downtown Waterbury, Ct. at the Palace Theater years ago and was knocked out shocked because I didn't even know who they were! Thanks so much for covering this master guitarist as I have not seen or heard too much of his music but I soon after picked up a few albums.
Nice to see you put Frank in the spotlight. About his last studioalbum Eye of The Storm you say it's from 2005, 15 years old. Actually it's 20 years old. It was selfreleased in 2000, reissued in 2001 and the 2005 version is another German reissue. Think I'm gonna watch his brilliant recently released 6 hours live dvd now while thinking how unjust the musicscene can be..
Hello Mr. Pardo, I actually went to see him at the Spfld. Civic Center around 1980, only problem was it wasn't him, it was another band named RUSH, never heard of them.
Saw Frank live back in '87 on Full Circle tour. Ronnie Montrose opened. Orgiastic frenzy of guitar. I was bleeding from the ears when I left. Definately in my top 5 shows of all time. So good.
This is your post that caught my attention, I've always been a fool for Mahogany Rush, thanx. The results among Mahogany Rush albums I listened to then are right here with yours, this we share very much in common. Where I eventually fell off was after the World Series Of Rock event he played at. First of 6 superb acts, played for just a little over an hour right around noon while doing his utmost to embarrass the other 5 main acts. 5 of the main acts did show out that day due to Franks efforts, guess who didn't? They played fourth no less right up against the headliner.
Frank ruled the late 70's for me, was lucky to see him a few times back then and as an opening act they blew away the headliners each time and the RnR Marathon tour when they headlined was the best, still have the image of him stuck in my head. 1.Child of a Novelty 2.World Anthem 3. 4
Saw him in 78 open for KANSAS at MSG NYC great show all around. The last was about ten years ago at BB KING in MANHATTAN he played 4 hours what a show the man is one of the GREAT ONE'S.
I saw mahogany rush and humble pie in 1980 play at the cow palace in San Francisco I was 18 years old great show loved humble pie as well apparently Angel and mother's finest opened up but I didn't get there in time for either of those acts but I did see Angel live in 75 or 76 at Edgewater Park in Cleveland Ohio Cleveland's Michael Stanley band opened up and I was 14 or 15 years old
I was so glad you corrected yourself about the Max/Novelty songs! I was yelling at my phone--" no,no you got that wrong!" LOL! I have loved Frank since I was 15yrs old.... I'm 65now.
The first albums that I ever bought (I got them at the same time) were Mahogany Rush "Live" and the first Van Halen. I started ranking his stuff and couldn't come up with anything that made me happy, so I'll just enjoy your list, Pete (and commenters). With those two being my first albums it's no surprise that I ended up a guitar player, I guess!
Been a fan since 1976. The concert at Newcastle in 1977 was one of my fondest memories. Juggernaut World Anthem IV What's Next Strange Universe Eye of the Storm Tales of the Unexpected Child of the Novelty The Power Of Rock n Roll Maxoom Full Circle From the Hip
Pete going to see him in again for the 4th time in Cleveland in September hopefully if this Covid crap is done ? Your right he doesn't have a bad album , his live albums are fantastic especially the new DVD at the Cleveland Agora by the way , it's highly recommended !
oh we loved Frank and MR. Still do but in 1975 that was huge underground type stuff. One day that year we all smoked up and put on Maxoom (it's an M at the end btw) and I was really blown away by the album. I got to see them a few times, one great NYC show on the IV tour. That album remains my fave (good call, Pete!) but any one does it!
The first two concerts I saw were in 1979, Ted Nugent in June, Kansas in September. Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush were the opening act both times. Fantastic!
Music journalists in the UK slagged off Mahogany Rush like they were trying to hang on to the coat tails of Rush. Never paid attention to them from that moment on. The track Tales of the Unexpected is incredible. 40 odd years later I am still loving it. Scandalous Marino wasn't bigger than he was.
very difficult to do this , thanks a lot for your work . For me any album depends first on the circunstances, a time of listening , and the feeling envolved , for me Strange Universe as the first cotact made me say that it is my favorite , 4 too , the most beautiful with dragon and the answer , but you were very honest and I always agry with you !!!
Oh my God, I remember Kick Axe because when I was sixteen or so I ordered it on those 12 albums for a penny thing. I think it was on cassette or maybe just maybe it was CDs. I remember that one, and I also got King Diamond too. Now I'm 51 and that was almost 40 years ago and I'm still a Metal Head by the way.
"I WISH IT WOULD RAIN" maybe might be my favorite among so many other great songs. there's just something about the melancholy mood of this particular song that has always affected me. whenever I'm feeling down I always reach for this song (and Todd Rundgrens Healing pts.1,2 & 3) and somehow feel better !! and you gotta love those Les Paul/Charlie Christian guitar licks, go Frank, go !!
You and I are so connected about this ranking. I'd only differ with I'd put World Anthem as number 1 and Mahongany Rush 4 as second. Thanks for the review. Very good.
Here's my Top Ten; 1.4 2. What's Next 3. Strange Universe 4. Juggernaut 5. World Anthem 6. Full Circle 7. Power of Rock and Roll 8.Tales of the Unexpected" 9.Maxoom 10.Child of the Novelty And we know that ALL the Live albums kick ass. Thank you Pete.
FRANK!! We just don't need another album, we need you to play the UK once this friggin' lockdown is over with, and not just a one off date in London either. C'mon over, be great to see you play live, you will be extremely well received
Frank Marino is a guitar God!! #1 'What's Next' for me....esp the killer side 1 starting with 'You got living' and ending with 'Something's coming our way' Saw him at Port Vale 'Heavy Metal Holocaust' in 1981....main reason I went along with Ozzy with Randy Rhoads..... . #2 IV #3 Juggernaut #4 Eye of the Storm #5 Strange universe #6 Tales of the Unexpected #7 Power of Rock n Roll #8 World Anthem #9 From the Hip #10 The child of the Novelty #11 Full Circle #12 Maxoom. Certainly hard to rank and I have done this quickly..
When I was a McDonald’s store manager in London Ontario, Frank Marino came to store in the ‘80’s for McHappy Day. He worked cash, fries, and made a Big Mac. He signed my albums that I brought and had some goodies for me. Amazing time with Frank.
Have to ask - did he wear a hair net and do you have any pictures? Frank Marino - favorite guitar player for 44 years, have seen him play many times, and will see him later this year. FM&MR Live - #1.
Electrawire. Sadly, there were no photos taken. His hair was tucked into the paper crew hat. This was 1988 at the Highbury location in London 🇨🇦 Canada. One thing he gave me was the new Double Live record signed. What a great person.
i have Marino's first 3 albums on vinyl and the forth on vinyl as well--he played a lot in Detroit back in the day. He def. was out of the Hendrix mode...and so be it!! Great guitar player!
Yes a very well talented guy from my town , Montreal. He was an electrefying performer , in my hearth he was replacing the lost of Jimmy. I saw him has his début in park ( parc hauntsic ) then they made the montreal forum with Maxoom, it was an incredebil show ( high to the roof ) Good Music, Good Memories, God Speed !!!
Frank is dealing with health issues and is retiring from touring, good thoughts toward you, Mr. Marino. Not a bad album in the bunch, but my favorite is World Anthem, and live of course.
I concur with your top3, Pete. Absolute killer and must have for any rock guitar, Hendrix fan. Frank an Pat Travers were (are) my favourite 70 ies guitar heroes. I also dig Randy Hansen a lot (Champagne and cocaine), but he become just a bit too much of a Jimi Hendrix clone, whereas Frank always remained unique.
We all know that Frank is probably the most underrated guitarist of all time, but glad to see that Pete pointed out that his vocals are also very good!
My Dad worked for CBS Records. In 1976, he brought home a couple of MAHOGANY RUSH LPs for me. He was playing a show @ Calderone Hall on Long Island. I was 12. Dad knew I was a fan & I guess he thought it was a good idea to drop me off & pick me up after the show. But, what is going on here... as I looked around & watched everyone with a baggie on their lap rolling funny looking cigarettes? Wow! I had my face melted off so young! What a life changing night! Fan forever! Can't wait till this f'n virus is over so we all can experience "greatness" once again!!
He was scheduled to play in New Hampshire last month but because of the virus his show was postponed. It's been rescheduled for September and I was able to change my ticket from a 3rd row table, right side of stage to a 1st row table just left of center. Someone obviously wanted their money back for what ever reason, maybe the new date didn't work. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be sitting in the 1st row on Sept 10th.
Once again Beaker Street from KAAY Little Rock introduce me to "Strange Universe" and Columbia Record club offered "Child of Novelty" & "Maxoom'. So I had the trio on ...8-track tape when "IV" was released. So naturally these 4 are my top 4. But as you said Pete. Not a bad one in the bunch. Now that he finally released the Live DVD after 14 years maybe he's got time to hit the studio again.
First time I saw Frank and MR was 1977 here in the UK. World Anthem tour with Lone Star supporting. I still pinch myself now and then to make sure I hadn't dreamt it, easily one of the best shows I have ever seen. A 16 year old me, totally lost in the music, the best of times.
I have Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush full performance from Cal Jam II along with all of the other artists except Rubicon, it is a Japan bootleg I got years ago, and it's too bad the whole concert was never officially released.
I've been playing guitar since '86 and Marino has always been an influence. He was one of my earliest influences. If a guitarist doesn't know Marino I don't have much to talk about with them.
I kinda feel sorry for them, really. :) I started playing in '78, my friends often wondered why I didn't light my hair on fire over VH or SRV, no knock on their obvious talent....I had a stash of Frank records, :)
@@allancrow134 My uncle was playing Marino records for me back in the 70s. I remember hearing Frank tear it up on "The Answer" back in '77 when I was three or four. This is music I grew up with. Just listening to Frank and buying his albums, especially when I picked up the guitar at twelve, made me a better, more melodic player than I would have been otherwise. I don't play anywhere near Frank's level to this day, but having Frank as an influence helped me aim higher and work to a higher standard, and I'm grateful for his influence. He's also a great singer. I can barely sing backing vocals. If I could sing I would. And I love that he plays an SG. So very cool.
@@angusorvid8840 Hey Angus, I learned to sing because of Frank and the other singing guitar players like Jimi, Clapton(Cream), Pat Travers, Kim Mitchell, Mark Knopfler, Rory Gallagher., SRV, the Beatles and even Kurt Cobain. Apart from Cobain and John Lennon, those guys don't really have killer high ranges, it's not like trying to sing Zepplin, Aerosmith or Purple which I can't do very well but did anyways from time to time. I covered a bunch of Frank songs for years and still do. Songs like King Bee, Dragon Fly, Crazy Miss Daisy, Once Again, Johnny B. Goode, Running Wild and Maybe it's Time would pack the dance floor every time. Same with Shadow Play and Follow Me by Rory. Most of the audience would be hearing those songs for the first time. Often people would ask me if they were originals, that happened a lot. I can play The Answer but could never coordinate the singing at the same time(still trying), I don't know how Frank pulls that off so effortlessly. I wasn't content to let some lead singer dictate what music we were going to play. I discovered that early in life when the lead singer kicked me out of my first band. LOL. The live music scene where I live on Vancouver Island used to be really active, weekend gigs were everywhere, now it's pretty much dead. I had a good-paying seasonal job working as a commercial fisherman so I had lots of time to practise. I did a lot of listening and singing practice out on the boat in the middle of the ocean. It's too bad things have changed so much, this COVID thing is like the final nail. Anyhow, nice to chat and share. Cheers Bro.
In 1979 I had a choice of going to my high school graduation or sitting 8th row center for Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush opening for Ted Nugent. It was a no-brainer!
Also pete, the live tracks from tales of the unexpected were new songs it would be great to hear the studio tracks of those with the backing tracks etc

I really like the early 80's release Juggernaut.
It's incredible that his music doesn't sound aged like a lot of 80's stuff.
Juggernaut is my fave Marino,..hands down
Strange dreams is just timeless
Frankster since 77. Met him twice. LOVE HIM. Good list. Pretty similar to mine. :)

FRANK!! We just don't need another album, we need you to play the UK once this friggin' lockdown is over with, and not just a one off date in London either. C'mon over, be great to see you play live, you will be extremely well received
My top 3: 1= The power of rock'n'roll, 2= Juggernaut, 3= What's next.
My favorite epoch of his career!
Get the dvd it is stunning
Got my start with the Live album. That's where I'd tell people to start. Great stuff all round.
I love it all...
I've listened to your top 2 more times than I could possibly count.
Frank Marino - favorite guitar player for 44 years, have seen him play
many times, and will see him later this year.
Ha! just listened to a song land of 1000 night and you release a video about him not bad not bad 😍
Frank is dealing with health issues and is retiring from touring, good thoughts toward you, Mr. Marino. Not a bad album in the bunch, but my favorite is World Anthem, and live of course.
I love Frank Marino My favorite is Juggernaut and the runner up The Power of Rock'n'Roll!
Maxoom and Double Live. Poppy is my favorite💮💛Frank
Great video. World anthem my no1. But mostly agree with the list.
His version of crossroads off the live album superb.
Guitar legend. What’s Next is number one for me
Once again Beaker Street from KAAY Little Rock introduce me to "Strange Universe" and Columbia Record club offered "Child of Novelty" & "Maxoom'.
Imo his first 3 records with Mahogany Rush (Maxoom, Child Of The Novelty, Strange Universe) and "What´s next" are his (their) best ones !!
I try to keep up the best I can, but have you ever done a best of Anthony Phillips albums? I know he's quite prolific.
I have Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush full performance from Cal Jam II along with all of the other artists except Rubicon, it is a Japan bootleg I got years ago, and it's too bad the whole concert was never officially released.
Lucky find
Yes another Frank Marino album would be great, 👍🏻🎸
I've been playing guitar since '86 and Marino has always been an influence.
I can play The Answer but could never coordinate the singing at the same time(still trying),
I don't know how Frank pulls that off so effortlessly. Cheers Bro.
Oi Adoro seu canal , sou aqui de Porto Alegre / Brasil ! Por acaso vc já fez um Ranking de álbuns do Manowar ? Abração !!!!
