Great episode! Forever, For Now was originally supposed to be a Myles Goodwyn solo album, but at the last minute was changed to a band album, this the variety. I’ve done many an episode on this band, one of my favourite Canadian bands ever.
Harder...Faster, First Glance, and Nature of the Beast are my favorite April Wine albums, in that order. They always seemed like a band trying to figure out what they wanted to sound like. For me, that late '70s-early '80s period was the time when they hit it.
SwanShado., Same for me., in that order as well. Harder....Faster is my personal favorite, being the most cohesive, and solid album, followed with First Glance.
I remember MTV would play a live version of 'Sign Of The Gypsy Queen' with the long guitar jam at the end. They must of had some Southern Rock influences as well.
The 1972 song "You Could Have Been A Lady" went to # 32 (Billboard Top 40) back in May of 1972!! It was renamed April Wine (self - titled instead of "On Record" & a different cover mostly in purple) but only went to # 205 (Bubbling Under The Top 200 Album Charts) in October of 1972 on Big Tree/Bell Records.

April Wine started a trend of local small town bands making it big in Canada. You should check out Chilliwack from the west coast. Successful top 40 radio band featuring Bill Henderson on vocals and Brian MacLeod on lead guitar.
Haven't thought about this band in quite some time so thanks for the mental reboot. Never owned all of the catalogue but had some of the earlier albums and generally were your top 5. Maybe in a little different order but the grouping would be the same. Now time to listen again to the band. Thanks again, Pete...another great show.
I love that Album forever now....me and Pete usually line up on ratings..the last song is amazing... I love the whole album can't believe he picked it last ... thanks for all the great reviews...lots of fans in Canada
Great vid! April Wine has always been one of those bands that my friends have never heard of since they were never real big. I discovered them years ago on a compilation cassette and I was hooked. Great rocking tunes.
I love the top 3 albums of your ranking, Pete. April Wine, Triumph, Y&T, Van Halen, Pat Travers and The Rods were my favourite North American bands late seventies, early eighties. Listened to them ALL the time.
Great band from my home province of Nova Scotia ( the original line up anyway ), they definitely should have been bigger, a lot of great songs throughout their catalog. Electric Jewels, First Glance, Harder... Faster, are some of my favorites.
I revisit April Wine almost daily. I have all 16 studio albums. Life long fan. 51 years n counting. Here's my top 5. No particular order per say, just too much good stuff. So, Electric Jewels, Nature of the Beast, Attitude, Stand Back and First Glance. Hard not to include albums like, On Record, Harder Faster, Power Play and Whole Worlds Goin Crazy.
The first April Wine I purchased was Power Play. I was 9 or 10 yrs old. Love that record. I did purchase the majority of their catalog after that. First Glance is my favorite also. I really dig the first two albums. They are really different but that is part of the beauty. Great video Pete.
April Wine one of my all time faves. Saw them open for Foreigner and April Wine killed!!! Agreed, good catalog. Top 3: 3. First Glance 2. Attitude 1. Nature Of The Beast Nature Of The Beast was created like Heart's Dog & Butterfly. On vinyl as you said, Side 1 Rocked, Side 2, Laid Back. Thanks for doing this one Pete :-)
Saw this lot live in Southampton in 1981ish. Diamond head supported them and blew them away. They were so dreadfully dull and faceless. Always love your rankings Pete.
Good one PETE! April Wine. I first heard of them , when a friends older brother turned me onto HARDER FASTER!...i asked for it for Christmas 1979, along with Flirtin With Disaster. It's hard to fathom why they weren't more popular in the States. It wasn't for their lack of touring. I think to a great extent, it was their lack of radio airplay in the States. My favorite album is their third album Electric Jewels, from '73.
My favorite April Wine is Harder Faster, it is a solid album, and I have been listening to it a lot lately. Great songs. But it is also my least favorite album I own by them too. Come to think of it it is the only thing I own by them. Maybe i shouldn't do a ranking the albums by April Wine, so never mind. I know I'm (very) late viewing this ranking, but watching it made me go back and listen some more. As someone who was only familiar with their late 70s/early 80s output, I'm digging the hell out of that debut.

Great list Pete. Just so you know. Forever for Now was intended to be his solo album in fact. And he just got the band to finish it. . A different selection of influential songs . Cheers. I like that FIRST GLANCE is number one . Great
Just Between You And Me was a regular staple of early MTV. Good times. You still catch classics like Roller and Sign Of The Gypsy Queen on rock radio now and then.
such an under rated band. One of our Canadian best. When April Wine came to town, you knew it. 3 guitar attach with great memorable rockers and Goodwin's vocals, it was gonna be a good time. Seen them a few years ago, and wow just wow. Brian Greenway could of been a house hold name guitarist, had he been in a British or an American band. Go watch April Wine live from London on youtube and see what I mean
Electric Jewels deserved to be in the top 3 imo. Definitely one of their heavier, rockier albums and also the late great Jim Clench's awesome bass playing and great vocals. An all around killer classic album
1. S/T. Very different, psychedelic/rock/folk/hard rock etc 2. Stand Back. After that, I can't choose - each one will differ by the day; Harder Faster, Nature Of The Beast, Electric Jewels.... Love the 1974 Live album. Awesome.
To everyone reading this (including Pete), check out another criminally underrated Canadian band called "The Tea Party". They've been around since 1990 and are beyond amazing. They are an INCREDIBLE trio. Their albums: Splendor Solis (1993), The Edges Of Twilight (1995), Transmission (1997), Triptych (1999), The Interzone Mantras (2001), and The Ocean At The End (2014). Thank me later.
They are from Windsor where I live, talented guys but far too depressing to listen to, kinda like Pink Floyd as I never heard a happy song from them and after a while I need a break from all the gloom ;)
Here trying to track down the songs of April Wine that was on my first HM tape ever(mix tape) given to me in -80(I was 5) by my older sister.. I can somewhat remember them, but they kinda fell short of the other bands ACDC and Saxon.. I listened to them instead, and kinda forgot the April Wine songs that just became "extras".. To me it just means the heart of metal.. My first metal steps as a 5 year old. That is also key to my metal today, I think, and also why I cannot let it go 42 years after.. 🤘 I must look further but thanks a lot!
Though I own the whole catalog I kept second (and third, and fourth) guessing my list, so I scrapped it and decided to just enjoy yours. Great band. Also, I think we all love it when your dogs give their opinion. :) Thanks, Pete! Not sure if I asked before (I don't like to repeat myself), but any chance of a Sammy Hagar ranking?
A band that should have been more recognized outside of Canada. Many of their songs are still played daily here in Canada right along side of all the heavy hitters...cheers from Vancouver
Mine fall in about the same order except I have Stand Back much higher. Oowatanite, Victim for Your Live are rockers and Tonight is a Wonderful Time to Fall in Love got considerable airplay. It has a hooky riff and Myles Goodwin’s vocals are excellent.
Still have my original pressing of Nature of the Beast which was my all time favorite. Picked up Power Play on cassette when it came out and thought it was pretty good. Recently discovered how good Harder Faster is and really enjoying it. I need to give First Glance a chance.
"Nature of the Beast was the top album and I had the tape of it,but of course I'd heard many of their songs on the radio, great hard rock with a little bit of power pop and all, great band."-🤔🎤🎸🎸🎹🥁📻🌐..
Man, I had forgotten all about "This Could Be The Right One". That chorus has such a great hook! Had to add it my Spotify playlist for work. My customers in the Tulsa Post Offices really get treated to some great music...even if they don't like it.
Admittedly, I haven't heard some of the ones you ranked higher up, but I think The Whole World's Going Crazy is one of their best. Shotdown is one of my favorite Rock songs of all time! I was surprised as hell to hear it wasn't a big hit outside of the St. Louis area! Kick Willy Road is also a killer track. I love Nature of the Beast too, but I disagree about the second side. I think One More Time and Crash and Burn are two of the better songs on the album. Great band! Glad you ranked them!
My favorite album by April Wine is The Whole World's Goin' Crazy and my favorite songs are Wings of Love & the Hot Chocolate cover, You Could've Been a Lady.
April Wine fans should definitely check out the Canadian film "High Life" (2009)...April Wine comes up as a theme throughout, and they're featured heavily on the soundtrack, excellent crime movie. One of my favorite AW tunes is "Say Hello".
April Wine is a national treasure here in Canada, still getting airplay daily on classic rock radio. My second concert was April Wine on their Power Play tour. Great band, my fave song has to be Babes in Arms.
I used to love them but I must say I don't feel the majority of their music has aged well - even though Sign Of The Gypsy Queen is still a fantastic cover version. To me, a much better national treasure of Canada is The Tragically Hip.

They are from Windsor where I live, talented guys but far too depressing to listen to, kinda like Pink Floyd as I never heard a happy song from them and after a while I need a break from all the gloom ;)
excellent band!!!
How about ranking Praying Mantis, Samson and Tank?
Thanks, Pete!
First glance in fantastic. Debit lp of the Five members
"Nature of the Beast was the top album and
I had the tape of it,but of course I'd heard many
of their songs on the radio, great hard rock with a little
bit of power pop and all, great band."-🤔🎤🎸🎸🎹🥁📻🌐..
Huge fan. Tragically Hip next?
Man, I had forgotten all about "This Could Be The Right One". That chorus has such a great hook! Had to add it my Spotify playlist for work. My customers in the Tulsa Post Offices really get treated to some great music...even if they don't like it.
Love the doc savage T-shirt, Pete!
I have never heard First Glance.I will have to check it out.You seem Passionate about it.
J'ai découvert April Wine avec l'excellent album Power Play en 1982...Il reste mon album préféré jusqu'a aujourd'hui.
The Nature of The Beast, Harder Faster, Stand Back, The Whole World is Going Crazy.
I think I spot Saxon's 'Solid Ball Of Rock' on the shelf to the left (my left) of Pete's head. : D
Love the Doc Savage shirt!
Yes!! Babes in Arms ROCKS!! (only topped by Oowattanite from Stand Back) but Harder...Faster is their best album! Keep Rockin'!
