  • Chartley Castle, Staffordshire is one of several castles built by Ranulph de Blondeville, Earl of Chester who also built Bolingbroke castle and Beeston castle. The ruins are visible from the A518 just outside of Stowe-by-Chartley but it is hard to park and there appears to be no access. The site is famous for being one of the places where Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned before her trial and execution.
*Note- where I said 'Elizabeth II in the video, I of course meant 'Elizabeth I'

Visited today but could only view the ruin from the A518. The castle is on ‘private land’ and cannot be accessed. There are sometimes, I’m told, guided tours but how one would go about booking this isn’t really clear and there doesn’t appear to be anything online that I can see. There should be a right of way up to ancient monuments of this nature so everyone can enjoy their history rather than one extremely selfish individual who fancies himself as lord of the Manor.

You have to be very careful if you want to see the castle close up, the owner of the land doesn't like people walking over he's land. I know people who have asked the land owner if they could look around the castle. Answer. NO.
