  • The 18th century folly of Mow Cop, a familiar landmark for the folk of Staffordshire and Cheshire, was originally built in medieval style by the lord of Rode Hall. Today, the folly is closed off due to the steep cliff on one side but the viewpoint next to it and the surrounding area is a popular spot for dog walkers. The top of the hill affords a remarkable panoramic view over Stoke-on-Trent on the one side and the Cheshire Plain on the other. Bring a pair of binoculars, a good telefoto and wide angle lens and enjoy the view!

I could see this from my bedroom window, growing up. Along with the coal trains rumbling by. A few times went there and walked up it and enjoyed the view. There is something really special about it. Left Staffs in 1986. Have lived mostly in the South since then. To tell the truth I don't miss it much, I spent 6 months living back with my mother who was in Uttoxeter then and that was a ruddy miserable business.

Mow Cop was the scene of great Primitive Methodist outdoor gatherings where thousands gathered for prayer and preaching. Meetings derided by Arnold Bennett as 'religious orgies'. If your 'imaginary history camera' had had audio you might have heard this whole area ringing with the sound of passionate Methodist hymns. Thanks for these curiosities.

Lovely view but Jodrell bank is less than 12 miles from Mow Cop, no where near 25-30 miles.
