  • This time on Curiosities of Staffordshire we visit the Essex Bridge which spans the River Trent in the town of Great Haywood, Staffordshire. Originally spanning some 40 arches, Essex Bridge was, and still is, one of the longest packhorse bridges in Britain, though now only 14 arches still stand. The bridge is a scheduled ancient monument and is one of the best examples of a medieval packhorse bridge in the country.
It stands next to the Shugborough Estate and takes its name from its founder - Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex who lived at the nearby Chartley Castle.

Thanks Potter number one. I'm a native of Great Haywood and have moved away. Lovely film of childhood haunt, great commentary!

Weird question but is it safe to jump off the actual bridge?
