    I just bought this recorder secondhand. It's funny how it is not at all cheap after all these years, which I guess means it's quite good and does a good performance. Your video helped me get the basics of recording, and I think it is a very good one, for both the not very technically inclined, as you put it, and the more advanced users that have never had this particular recorder. Thanks.

    Just to clarify when you are talking about 12 as the record level, that is not the db level, it refers to the record level between 0 - 90. As you can see on the display, the db level at 12 is around -43dB. You need to move up the record level to 42 to 50 to reach a -12 dB level, depending on the distance from the mic and loudness of the speaker's voice.

  • @gregvanpaassen
    @gregvanpaassen 5 років тому +2

    Excellent explanation for its intended audience: non-technical people interested in capturing history before it disappears. Repeatedly going over the basics is just what these people need.
    Your video highlights that the Tascam controls could be better - especially adjusting the input level (so that your recording hits the -12 dB mark) really needs its own buttons as the likes of ronald ferreira so vividly demonstrate.
    Still, everyone agrees that they are reliable devices, and that's what really counts.

    Since nobody seems to understand, I'm going to say this: This is NOT like the old portable cassette players you would take with you, record something and listen to it back using the recorder. This is NOT INTENDED FOR NORMAL AUDIO PLAYBACK. It records a digital file to be used elsewhere. In fact, some models of these things don't even HAVE a speaker. Use the USB cable that came with it to plug it into your computer and copy the WAV or MP3 file over. Alternately, you can use POWERED EXTERNAL SPEAKERS plugged into the headphone port. IF you want something to record a lecture and then play it back when you're studying, this isn't it.

    • @JunkBondTrader
      @JunkBondTrader 3 роки тому +1

      It can be used for playback fine. Everyone understands. I mean, it functions the exact same way as the tape players you are talking about. Those were meant for palyback, I guess, but not like they were any ebtter at playback than this. The playback is just to check to make sure you got everything. A cursory glance. I don't think anyone is using this as a walkman lol.

      wrong and incorrect, it has a stereo line out/headphone jack so you can run a boom mic, interview mic or or set of wireless mics into mic input or just use the stereo mics inbuilt, you can put a headphone splitter to headphones for monitoring out and a line out at same time, so you can run 2 radio mics and monitor and output to devices at the same time, its far more technically advanced than an old tape recorder..

    You should record at 48KHz instead of 44.1KHz. That way you can line it up with your video. It will drift over time if you don't record at 48KHz and then try to line it up the recorded sound with video.

    • @JunkBondTrader
      @JunkBondTrader 3 роки тому

      pro tip, you can convert 44.1 to 48khz and restore the syncing

    do you know how to pause playback, so you can then unpause and continue where you left off? the "stop" button just starts the recording over, a big problem if you're several hours into a very, very long recording.

    Hallo! thanks for the detailed tutorial. I have a problem with my DR-05. I bought it recently in Dec 2017. Am able to record the files. Once i connect it to computer, recorded files is not showing up the in the computer. After disconnecting the DR-05 from Computer, when i switch on the recorder it is asking me to format the SDcard. Please help me to get the recorded files from DR-05.

    I think the 2G refers to the maximum file size (before it starts another file) not the size of the SD card. It can take cards up to 32 GB.

    • @gregvanpaassen
      @gregvanpaassen 5 років тому

      That's correct. If you want long recordings up to 23 hours 56min, use the format MP3, 192 kb/s. Virtually no-one can tell the difference between that and 48 ksa/s WAV files--proved by double-blind listening tests.

    • @jamesslick4790
      @jamesslick4790 4 роки тому

      True and that's for EACH file!. If to start a NEW file, it's ANOTHER 23Hrs!, but you'd better power it by USB, I don't even know if my better Eneloops will go enough for nearly 16 WHOLE days of recording on my 32Gb card 😜

    Brilliant. This is the best video about this voice recorder. Since this video is 2+ years old...do you think that this recorder is still good for recording during vlogs or would you rather suggest something else that is newer and better in one way or the other but at the same time...it should not cost an arm and/or a leg.

    Doesn't look like original poster answers any questions so I'll throw this to the viewers - with this unit, what's the best way to record 2 people at the same time? It looks like you would have to lean in very close to the on board mics to get a decent voice recording and in these current times it's not a great thing for 2 people to be doing. Is there an external mic solution to this where we can be further apart? Thanks :)

      attach to a gorilla pod or tripod and start talking it pics up everything in the room, for awesome sound attach dual wireless mics or a boom mic. if you simply add headphones for monitoring you can just easy interview, buy an interview mic and put it into the mic input..

    • @mfsmfs63
      @mfsmfs63 5 років тому

      Yeah - buy something different. This is made to transfer the files to a cocmputer. The speaker is only so you can verify it's recording, not to actually listen to playback. That's not what it's for.

    I can see the record volume is at -34 needs to be turned up to around -9 or -12 that’s why it sounded super quiet when you changed to it plus needs to be 48khz for video but just 44.1khz for interviews that you aren’t matching the video up too.

      To format the SD card please open "Disk Utility", select your SD card, click the "Erase" tab, choose "exFat" in the "Format" area on the right-hand side (exFat is more efficient and uses less space on the card), then click the "Erase" button (this will completely wipe the card).

    • @jamesslick4790
      @jamesslick4790 4 роки тому +2

      The 2Gb limit is for individual file sizes. (This is a limitation of the FAT32 file system). You can use all 32 gigs on your card, but only in 2Gb "chunks", You have the 2Gb MAX for just a single recording! 2Gb at the HIGHEST quality settings, (24 Bit WAV, 96k Samples in Stereo mode.) is 1 Hour and 2 Minutes. At the LOWEST quality settings, (32k MP3, 44.1K Samples in Mono mode.) is 23 Hours and 59 Minutes. Again those are the maximum times for EACH SINGLE recording! Multiply those times by 16 to get a rough idea of how much TOTAL time of audio your card will hold. The "SIze" setting in the REC SETTING is the limit for each recording. Since 2Gb is max for FAT32, Leave it there for ANY CARD that is OVER 2Gb in size, IF for some odd reason you are using an old card that has less than 2Gb, Then use a lesser setting.

      Not made or intended to use the RD-05 for playback. People don't understand this. It doesn't even need the speaker, because it's intended for you to transfer the digital file to a computer. they put a speaker in it only so you can verify it is recording something - not to actually listen back.

    • @mfsmfs63
      @mfsmfs63 5 років тому +1

      @@holygeneration7 What I was trying to say is that MOST people that buy this use it to record live music. And after recording, they transfer the digital file to a computer for further electronic processing and/or to sync it with video. While it may work to record and listen back to a lecture, it was not designed with that use in mind, as the speaker is so tiny you can barely hear it.
