I quick word of warning. I brought a Tascam 05X . No matter what I did I could not record a file my PC understood. After a day of frustration I gave up. I decided the next day to buy a new memory card. Wow everything worked perfectly the card was an old card from an old phone obviously corrupted. If you are having problems playing files on a PC it maybe worth while spending a few dollars and buy a new card. I posted this so other users won't waste hours trying to figure out what was wrong like I did.

I just ordered one from Sweetwater on sale right now for 90$ I’m very excited to start using it! Thanks for the video review!
thats where I got mine .Love sweetwater. We were on a trip and stopped in the show room.
Lots of 'excellent review' feedback but I don't see how that's possible with no comment at all about audio quality, the most important criterion of all
I've been looking at a lot of audio recording units like this from mainly Zoom and Tascam but also Sony recently. I'm amazed at how little importance has been asigned to the need for a 'headphone jack'. It's most often a 3.5mm port split between the headphone and line out, meaning one or the other. I'm shocked at this. Like monitoring the audio you're recording is somehow un-important. In terms of features I'd gladly sacrifice internal features like multiple alternative recording formats or limiters and compressors for a 'seperate' 'dedicated' 'headphone jack' and a seperate 'dedicated' 'line out'!! These as far as I'm concerned are core features that should be in all audio devices at all price points.
it seems like that this device has an input and output jack. or am i wrong?
The headphone jack is on the left side.
Nice review. However it would have been nice to see it connected to a PC - which you mentioned was a key feature in why you bought this unit.
Excellent. Thank you very much for your time and effort.
the preamp and noise floor has not been improved from the old DR05, and all the channels are controlled together with one input level.
It would be a good idea to mention the room conditions and your distance from the mic when test-recording. Otherwise the results are unclear. Also, can it use the two on board mics + an external mic simultaneously??
Just ordered one because mics go to 128db.time to rock n roll!
It does not accept the 128GB cards. I found that 32GB is the maximum.
Good overall review. Thank you I am a neophyte when it comes to recorders, etc. so this went a little fast for me, but still helped me out with my new TASCAM DR-05X. I am sure i'll get the hand of it...and will probably return to this video when I get more familiar with the equipment,
The DR-05 has a well documented RF interference problem when using the inbuilt microphones... have they fixed this in the DR-05X...?
Dang I thought I was the only one. I've never been able to figure it out but I guess its a common thing
You never mentioned overdubbing or overwriting- i just bought one and the manual doesn’t mention either
It's so odd that Tascam's own website does not have any audio actually recorded by their product, just background music. Just weird, but I guess they know how well their product works! Just sayin'
I'm getting it on Best Buy. It looks really nice lol, no joke.
Can I actually get better results plugging a lavalier mic into this? Say.. versus an iPhone or Android phone??
Love my DR-05. My only criticism is the battery door wears out quickly and became floppy and loose
Does your DR-05X have any white noise when recording silence? Any white noise on the line out when the unit is on and has earbuds plugged in? My unit has these issues and was wondering if others have it too, maybe it's normal, idk.
How about doing a quick start how to use for novices?
What is the advantage of the DR-05X over the DR-05?
Is there no display of volume on the screen (VU metering)?
Sounds very good
Is it a proper tool for recording piano and other acoustic recordings which are rather "loud"?
H!i Do you notice any RF interference when an electrical device is near (like a cellphonne or streaming device)? Excelent Review by they way!
Thanks! No, no interference from my experience but I am mostly using it via USB connection with my laptop.
I got one works great. However I think that it should have came with a sd card so that you could use it out of the box. I got mine and found an old cel phone and took a old 2 gb card out of it and used it to text my new unit with. I was really happy. I did order a sd class 10 card for it that did come latter on in the day. Other than that I am happy with the unit. Works great.
Hi, nice channel and video. I have the Tascam DR-7 and want to upgrade however the firmware is not very different to the DR-7? The low-cut feature seems to be a welcome addition.
The DR-7 is not a bad recorder but there are some issues with it. For example, date and time settings lost after empty or removing batteries. That really annoys me allot. How this recorder handles this issue?
The DR-7 has a pretty high white noise level when using the internal mics, how this recorder performs on this?
Another thing is battery life, it is pretty short on the DR-7, how about this recorder? I made an USB-adapter for it to be able to use it with an USB powerbank, that is really an improvement however you need to carry an extra powersource with you.
The DR-7 cannot be powered by the USB-socket on the device. Connecting the DR-7 to USB (computer) requires an additional power source, batteries (drain batteries when in use) or must use AC-power. That is really a design failure. How about this recorder?
If you use rechargeable batteries, the DR-7 has a menu option to select this type of battery and seems to change the power scheme however does not charge batteries when connected to AC-power adapter or USB. Is this recorder able to charge batteries? That will be a cool upgrade.
Thanks for reading and any reply, thanks.
recorded music and got right cable but having problem copying music to computer any ideas
Hi! Thanks for the review. I don't understand the MON on the main menu, turns into PWR when recording. Nothing in the manual other than saying MON refers to "Input Mix Function Status". I can't find an option for this in the menu... Does it have to do with using an outboard microphone with in onboard mics? Any help kindly appreciated.
Can you please help me out' i have this and it keeps starting over every 10 seconds' and sometimes records longer but kinda has a mind of its own
You have to go into menu and then to rec settings, there is the size configuration, change it to 2G (you are probably into 64MB).
yes
Is this good for recording a college lecture ? The person giving the lecture is about 5-9 ft away
what's the difference between the dr-05 and the dr-05X? Is there a difference in sound quality? Thanks.
Not sure. I don't have the dr-05
Micro USB instead of Mini USB jack. It can be used as a USB microphone in to the PC. 128Gb max card capacity.
It also works as a two-in two-out interface. Two-in being the stereo mics and two-out being the stereo out for monitors or headphones.
Thanks for sharing this review. I’m trying to decide between this one or the DR-07x and DR-10L.
I decided on the DR-07x thanks again.
@@RCModSquad why did you go with the x7?
Brian Lopez just for the mic pickup patterns. Other than that there isn’t any difference that I’m aware of. It’s not a feature I’ve used yet but I do have plans to.
@@RCModSquadthanks for the reply. I bought the 05x today. On sale $89 first recorder should be fine and dandy.
Brian Lopez I’m sure you will be very happy with it. Congratulations 🎉
Does the USB port also supply power if we don't want to use batteries?
Your question makes no sense. The term is bus power from the downstream USB device.
You can use either of three power supplies: 1.) internal AA-batteries 2.) external power supply unit - available as an optional item or 3.) a USB cable. So, the answer is yes! Theoretically, you should also be able to power it using a USB power bank. But I haven't tried that yet. When you connect to a PC or Mac, it will supply power and you can use the device as a sound card or card reader. Only limitation connection type "iOS", which will run on batteries. More info in the manual: tascam.com/downloads/products/tascam/dr-05x/e_dr-05x_rm_vb.pdf
If you plug it directly to your PC, does the recorder energize by the USB connection or does it need batteries still?
When connected via the USB menu and a cable to a computer the USB powers the device, not the batteries. It is a default setting when connected by a USB cable.
Which direction do you actually speak into the mic when recording voice over work?
Hi,a few days ago I bought DR-07X and notice a strange feature .
When increasing the contrast from the default (5) in the display visible vertical lines which vary in different menu positions.
If the contrast value is higher or equal than 10 the display information is completely unreadable with a maximum value of 20.
I understand that the main thing is sound recording and there are no problems found.
Everything works great under Win10 & even WinXP.
But still interesting is the software problem or recorder malfunction.
What does the display look like on your model when increase the contrast?
Can this record from an audio mixer? If so, can I simultaneously have the output file saved to my laptop?
I use the older 05, and according to your sound test, it seems like the newer 05x sounds way worse...
thank you for shared
Hi! I'm completing a master's at university. In about two months I'll start collecting some data, so I'll be interviewing different individuals, including a focus group. With the last one, I'm curious to know if it's better this type of recorders or a good mike, like the Blue Yeti, would do well. What do you tnink?
For just voice interviews I would use a cheaper option like the Sony one I also showed in this video
I also prefer devices that do not try to be smaller than they need to be, it's annoying having to fiddle finicky things. Like cellphones not using mic jacks because of size problems, but using screens without bezels, that's absurd.
Some devices are TOO small small today. I actually miss the size and weight of old full sized VHS camcorders as they gave me a more stable "platform" when shooting "handheld" (er, shouldered.). This series of recorders are perfectly sized. Pocketable but large enough to be not so "fiddly" in the hand. I also prefer the larger "bridge" (the ones that kinda look like DLSRs) type cameras than tiny "pocket" models. I can handhold shoot without relying on OIS as much.
Thinking of getting one to replace an old Zoom that takes over 45 secs to boot up (with a fast 32GB microSD). Does anyone have any metrics for start up time from off to "ready to record" state? Thanks in advance!
4 seconds boot time.
What's the handling noise like? I've found that the zooms recent models are really cheap plastic, so the handling noise is bad. I want to use it to collect organic samples. I have the q3 which is great, but due an upgrade
With this unit, what's the best way to record 2 people at the same time? It looks like you would have to lean in very close to the on board mics to get a decent voice recording and in these current times it's not a great thing for 2 people to be doing. Is there an external mic solution to this where we can be further apart? Thanks :)
4:16 use as external mic for computer
excellent review... i want to replace the terrible audio from action cams while fishing... is their a clip available to attach to belt or clothing... thanks!
There is no clip but it does have a port for securing it to standard tripods. Hope that helps
Can u not plug microphone into it?
I need some help with my Tascam DR-05 mic. It says it has a USB Audio Interface, so I should be able to connect it as an alternative input for my Macbook, right? I want to use it for my online lessons to improve the s
what brand and model of tripod is that?
Thanks for your video!
Thanks for your video! Can you help me on choose one n these mics or an audio recorder like the zoom H1, I'm musician and I need something to record good audio quality but lightweight and not so expensive. The video is going to be catched with the phone, but don't know what option is better for acoustic spanish guitar and singing.
I have 150 dolars for one.
Have a good day!
I just received this recorder. It's trash really. I was recording with a Samsung phone and thought a separated recorder will blow me away. Wrong! I have to say first I'm an audiophile and that's different than most people who use these things for podcast. For recording music from speakers it sucks. The tone is well off. The sound from the speakers in my room is not the same sound it captures. The phone was more accurate in tone than Tascam. It captured the highs in a bright presentation. The mids are absent and the bass is congested. It sounds cold not warm and not full. Thin too much treble and lacks warmth. I plugged in mics and it is an improvement but then, the built in mic is useless. Interface is easy to use. Returning it after 1 hr of testing.
Can you effectively use it as webcam mic without the need to manually align the video and audio through a software? If not, what other portable sound recorder do you recommend that can do that?
Yes, you can use it as a webcam mic. You just have to set it up as such with your computer
Hi there. Does it have an aux in? Thanks.
Sir Kay deserves answers
Comparing this to the dr-22 wl what should I get?
I have a DR-22WL. The wifi functionality is well-intentioned, but not well excuted. The Android app you can use to control the unit is unusable. Menu navigation is less easy to use than the DR-05. The microphones are also less sensitive on the DR-22WL than on the DR-05. I don't have a DR-05X, but if it's like the DR-05, I would get that instead of the DR-22WL.
good review mate. comparison with Camera mic is useful.
can you plug in a shotgun mic into it and also headphone to monitor the audio at same time as your recording to ??
It has both a mic in at the top and headphone out on the side.
@ wow thank you my friend cheers that helps me
Can I record audio line in into external mic input such as dj rack and computer? Please.
Would you rank This above the zoom h1n?
Hi, what would you recommend to get to record a concert (Rock/Metal)?
I have an iPhone, if that helps. 😅
Are you bootlegging? Cause that’s cool.
@@bobbythompson4268 No i'm not. I wanted to record a Tool concert for my personal use.
I did it with my iPhone under the seat.
Turned out to be good enough for me, just to remember that awesome night from time to time. :)
I got this "DR X Series ASIO" message error every time I try to change the input preferences, do you know what is happening? I tried on Ableton and Audition, even WIN sound preferences don't recognize the device.
I have no idea. Perhaps you got a faulty one?
I have the exact same problem with a DR-40X. Have been searching for hours and I don't seem to find a solution. Nobody talks about this.
I have the same problem, theres almost no information online about the issue, Any luck?
I don't think the DR-05X is a "voice recorder".
What was the distance to the microphone during the test recording?
Good point. Maybe I'll make a new video testing it out with music. The voice was recorded with only a few inches distance from the mic
@@erasertech16 What I meant was that it isn't really in the same category as the Sony dictation device you're comparing it to.
The DR-05X can be used for any recording application. It also features Dictation mode designed for human voice recording and transcription.
which one is best? dr 05 or dr 05x?
Hi nice video 👍
Does the LCD display always remain on. Is there a way to put the unit off when not in use
Thnx
The LCD light turns off after a few seconds but the letters remain on.
Debaser Photography thanks. I’m using it perfect now
Cheers
@@grandmasterjo1 You can set the back lit display to "always on" in the preferences. Options are 5, 10, 15, 30 sec or always on.
avviano thank you 👍👍
How is this Dr-05x f different to the previous 05 version?
@ 7:13
Why is there hiss when recording to the sdcard, but not when using as USB-Audio?
I wonder that too. I think it has something to do with the settings
@@erasertech16 I believe when you had it connected to the laptop it was a mono recording, where as on its own it was a true stereo pickup that I seem to hear, which is not what you want for voice anyways, so that could be why we all heard more hiss. When recording voice-over it should be a mono track as that will sound a lot better. But if you are recording a band or an acoustic guitar then def stereo for that.
I do have one question maybe you can answer and that is does that mic in jack allow for a stereo mic input by this I mean if you hook up something like the LOM mikroUši Which is a HQ external Stereo Mic Pair for field recording, will the Tascam record from the external mic jack in true stereo. If you can test that and how it sounds via any 1/8 stereo mic as I don't expect you to have the LOM on hand, that would be great as that info is never touched on it seems in any reviews I have seen so far.
Can it be connected to a pioneer rx2 controller to record?
Is it a single track??
Is it only battery operated? Cannot be plugged in and charged?
It can be powered through the Mirco USB port.
Does the Tascam dr-05x have voice activation recording capabilities?
Yes it does.
Can we using on computer in microphone ? Or just for data transfer ?
Yes, it can be used as a PC microphone by USB.
can you monitor audio while recording with this?
Yes, there is a monitor audio jack
Does it come with the USB?
where are the speakers located??
Can you add on to a prerecorded track? Can you stack at least once?
That’s what I want to know also
You can record Line In with audio cable? Stereo?
Yep, you can even digitize old LP records via your preamp's out connection. You'll need a "Y" cable, though. (if it's stereo RCA out)
Your use of a low cut filter is exactly backward for voice so I guess that is why your voice sounds like Mini Mouse. Further, the input is for an input not as you said an output.
I'm not sure how much of ANYONES voice is below 40Hz. Cutting below that will decrease background rumble., Oh and to be pedantic, (as you were with the minor input/output flub.) It's "Minnie Mouse" if you are comparing his voice to a certain D****y character. a "Mini Mouse" would be OK to toss in a backpack with your laptop though.
Is this divce good to record dj's sets?
I would think not because a mixer output would overload this unit. Look for the Tascam DR-40 for a unit that can handle hot signals from DJ equipment.
But has it a sd card or am I going to buy it separately?
Buy it separately. The unit is not ready to go stand-alone out of the box.
Does it have it's own memory, or card is always needed?
A memory card (micro sd) is needed.
Can you transfer files to computer or phone with usb chord or SD card?
Yep
Def with the SD card. Not sure about using a cord, but I believe so.
Hi, It's the latest DR-05. isn't it ?
Yep
Does he simultaneously record on pc / mac and sd card?
No, just one or the other.
Hi
Could you use this to record live bands?
Not the best for live music because the mic is very sensitive so you have to turn the gain way down but ends up being too loud.
@@erasertech16
Thanks for your reply
hey how do you find the overdubbing feature on this?
It’s easy to find- but it doesn’t do anything
Is this mic binaural ?
When recording music this unit sux.
Can it connect to a DSLR camera as an external mic?
This is what I’m trying to figure out
Yes, use the line out port in the tascam.
Has anyone used this for the sony a7s3?
How would you compare this to the Zoom H1n?
I wish I could answer but I don't have the Zoom.
This is larger. The auto gain with this is a nice feature. What are you using it for?
Did you purchase a dead cat? If so what kind? Are you using a lav mic with it? If so what kind?
Dead cat? No lav mic used here. Just the internal microphones
@@erasertech16 I definitely see the advantage of buying the latest model, but I am looking at getting these to accessories. So trying to find a good model of each.
Got the dead cat and not too expnsive at all. From China and shipping was free.

If it's from Amazon it should be legit. But check who the seller is.
any issues yet?
No, no issues after a few months of use.
Poor review! You only told us what we can find out by reading the online manual. You SHOULD have demonstrated the features that you blabbed about.
