    As another 70 year old rider i can identify with your Dad, hope he recovers and keeps his nerve, after a get off myself when a woman failed to give way it took me some real sole searching to get back on a bike. Props to him for riding that thing, that is a young man’s bike, when you get older little things like that kick stand just slip your mind to check.

    Sending prayers to your dad hope he's going to be okay. I lost my brother on virtually the same motorcycle in 1985 he hit a guardrail and it ripped him open from his crotch to his throat. I still have that cursed old bike covered up in the back of my shop. Try to save that old chopper if you can. These are awesome Hondas. Be blessed in your travels.

    Hell of a bike to ride at 70 y/o. I'm 73 rode since 1966, got hit by a truck in 2000, broke my back. Was back on 2 whells after a 6 month layup in 2 piece body cast. Just this year I gave up on the big bikes and now ride an 883. Still scares me. The HD as you may know have ride off sidestand to eliminate this type of scenario. My 883 broke a sidestand spring and I thought the tranny was blown, but thanks to HDs ride off stand I was saved and rode home using a bungee chord. Your dads decision not to put screws in his neck is IMO the best option. I healed naturally w/o operation.

    Glad your Dad is gonna be OK. I've ridden through your area many times out of KY. In 2012, I flipped my Toyota and got five fractures in my C2 and C6. Got a helicopter ride to Vandy from BGKY and got the halo for 12 weeks. Vandy told me that the C2 is the fracture that is most responsible for paralyzing people. He had the Good Lord looking after him that day. Prayers up and God Bless y'all.

My C3 thru C7 are fused and plated, so I know all too well about his neck injury. Hopefully, you will be able to get the bike back on the road. You should see about converting it into a 3 wheeler. it would look pretty cool.

    It is good that your dad made it. I am 76 and we older riders don't bounce as good as we did 50 years ago.
    The bike looks pretty good from where I am (😎), minor stuff like handle bars, fender, sissy bar, clutch perch are expendable. The gas tank may be salvageable, you won't know about the trans until you pull the shifter cover off and look inside. Honda built good engine/transmissions, pretty tough. Since the forks aren't mangled and the engine is intact I suspect the only frame damage is to the left rear, that doesn't look bad. Have someone hold the bike up straight with the front wheel straight and sight from the rear wheel forward, if the wheels are still aligned then that would be a good indication that the frame is alright. I wouldn't consider totalling it before checking it out good.
    I am west of Nashville, a neighbor talks of fishing at the dam, I may have to check the maps and ride over there. You take care, glad your dad will recover.

    • @butlercustoms
      @butlercustoms  5 місяців тому

      We will be shooting a laser down the frame and taking measurements to verify the condition of the frame. The road to the dam is one to certainly check out. Thanks.

    At 68, I can only imagine what your Dad is going through. Kick stands have been the cause of many terrible accidents. In high school I remember 2 guys on a Harley together left a bar and forgot to put up the stand. After shortly reaching highway speed the driver attempted to lean left, caught the stand and it shot them across the rd. into a guardrail. Both guys died instantly. So sad of a mistake. Best of luck to your Dad! Always check your stand.

    Choppers are not like your normal motorcycle, nor do they handle and behave in the same manner on the road. I've had a couple of hardtail choppers in my 63 years on this planet, 49 of them riding motorcycles on the road. In fact, my second motorcycle was a hardtail BSA engined custom chopper that I bought myself for my 16th birthday. Kickstart only, and a bike that was "piloted", rather than ridden. Not sure what the rake was, but it was a looong springer fork up front with a 21" wheel, and a 16" back in the rear. Right foot gear change, left foot old style shoebrake only. No brake up front. A lot of "anticipatin'" had to be done to pilot that thing. It was a pig to ride, uncomfortable and safety was not high on the order of things when it was built. I learnt to tighten a lot of bolts and fasteners before taking her out, one "learning" experience was one night riding down the road and having the complete exhaust system fall off. Headers to the non-baffled mufflers. She was still running, looking spectacular with blue flames shooting out the front of the engine. I turned around to go see if I could salvage the situation, only to see an eighteen wheeler flatten the pipes. As I said, a learning experience. But I loved her, and still miss her nearly half a century later. Still ride, Harley's for the last 35 years. Hope your Dad makes a full recovery, I wish both of you peace and healing, prayer is a powerful thing, I know for a fact God hears our prayers.🙏👍🇭🇲

    I did the same thing on my uncles CB750. Left the pump and tried leaning left. The bike said nope, we're gonna go through this flower bed and across the sidewalk and into a lane of traffic. I didn't wreck thank God. Glad your Pops is ok. As we know, bikes can be replaced Pops can't.

    Hi, I’m glad your Dad is ok. He’s very lucky he wasn’t hurt worse. I think the Bike is worth saving. There’s really not much damage to it, compared to what it went through. You might be able to find a Trike Kit you could fit this too. That way he still has his Honda, but will be a little safer. 👍👍

    It may be more work but you could disassemble the forks and check the run out on the stantions I’ve used my wheel balancer to do this but even a flat surface would work. The lower legs are pretty stout usually salvageable. Good to see your dad came out of this fairly well sending prayers for a solid recovery

      Thank you for the prayers for my father. I have a dial indicator and a laser that we will be using to verify the fork tubes and we will be putting a laser on the frame as well once we get it on a lift this winter for a total frame-off rebuild. Thanks again.

    Glad to hear your dad is relatively OK. That's a great looking bike. I don't know what the laws are over there but could you trike the chop if you are stripping and rebuilding it anyway? If the bike has sentimental value it would be a way to keep it alive and do away with the kickstand. You may find that if you slacken all the yoke (triple tree?) bolts you may be able to cure any misalignment of the front end. I have built a few trikes over the years (I'm in the UK) and enjoyed riding them. Good luck and I hope your dad heals well, us old guys don't bounce like we used to.
