    Hiya! My great grandmother just gave me a sewing machine and I’m finally using it! I’ll try make the pot holder and update on how it comes out! (Don’t sue me for not having the middle material lol). Wish this first time seamstress some luck 😅 UPDATE: It’s been- hours. and. my pot holder literally died. It scrunched up as I sewed it and as I tried to straighten it up all the thread ripped 😭🫠. I’ll try again some other time. I WILL NOT GIVE UP!!

      Keep going!! Sewing is one of those things where you want to tear your hair out and then all of a sudden things work and it feels amazing!!

      Oh boy, that's normal first project behaviour that your pot holder displays. Don't ged discouraged, try to analyze what you did, watch again what you need to do and try again. If it fails again, maybe look up other videos of this or a similar project, to give you a different perspective - for me that was what made it click in the beginning.

      A few unsolicited tips (feel free to ignore☺️)
      1. I’d check your thread tension. Using different color threads on the top and bottom makes it easier to see if there is issues. You shouldn’t be able to see the top thread on the underside or vice versa. Google sewing machine thread tension for a better explanation and how to fix it.
      2. Sew a few lines on a test piece of fabric to get used to using the machine. Make sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of each line.
      3. Make sure you’re using the right fabrics for this project. A slippery or super lightweight fabric will be very difficult to work with. A quilting cotton or any similar fabric will be best.
      4. Practice and have fun! you got this! 🎉💪

    Idk if they have it in Australia but for the US peeps if you make that very cute potholder they sell special batting so you don't have to worry about burning your hands. Insulbrite is an option but anything with thermal insulation works❤

    • @emmasly6619
      @emmasly6619 24 дні тому

      They do have it in Australia - but its often easier to get online.

      I think something like that exists everywhere in the world, though maybe not always in local sewing stores. Also, in my opinion a thicker walkloden out of 100% wool works way better. You can find that fairly cheap on youtube, in shops or as you need only a small amount (and the color really doesn't matter) even really affordable in the auctions.

    Love these projects and you always find the most beautiful fabrics ❤. I filled my draught stoppers (not as pretty as these, will need to make new ones now 😊) with fabric scraps. So extra tip to use the scraps (used a knitting needle to push them in).

    I am not a great seamstress, but I can manage to make simple dresses, etc. I had never seen such a cute potholder so decided to try it out. My binding would not stop puckering no matter what I did. I was so frustrated. What’s the secret to getting it around those curves?

    • @RoseryApparel
      @RoseryApparel  9 днів тому

      That’s no good ☹️ Did you make your own bias binding? If so, were your strips cut along the bias? Cutting along the bias give the bias binding a bit of stretch making it less likely to pucker around curves

    Is hessian what I would call burlap here in the US?

  • @musicmonster13
    @musicmonster13 24 дні тому

    Did you need to use a heavy duty needle/thread to get through the hessian? How did your machine handle the thickness of those corners? (And did you find the hessian at Spotlight? I've never seen it there but perhaps i was looking in the wrong area!)

    • @RoseryApparel
      @RoseryApparel  24 дні тому +2

      I just used my normal needle and my machine handled the layers fine. A heavy duty needle isn’t a bad idea though! Yes the hessian is from Spotlight and it was in the furnishing fabric department in my local store 😊

    • @musicmonster13
      @musicmonster13 24 дні тому
