I was never taught to use flesh toned fabric for facings when the main fabric is a little sheer, until I saw it on your channel. What a brilliant idea! I've since utilized this treatment and LOVED the outcome! Thanks for sharing 😊
Yea, the skintone fabric as lining makes ir still appear translucent without truly being translucent. White fabric as lining brightens the translucent fabric and give an appearance of more opacity. It’s so fun to manipulate these properties to carry out your vision.
Someone told me over 40 years ago to use pink or blue. I found blue worked better for me. Same way for bras. I had used white in a blouse and I hated the look of it.
I agree. This is a great idea. Will have to try it. I have very pale 'English rose' type skin with a lot of blue veins showing (despite living in Australia all my life!) so it will be interesting to match up a fabric.
Wow. God listens to prayer. :) Sis and I are just becoming interested again in embroidery after our grandmother started us out as children...... So special a memory, and we didn't expect to do it ever again. But we are now seeing it differently, and sis esp. interested in SASHIKO - couldn't believe you included it today! Perfect use for it, BTW. The concept of your video is superb. I am an almost-beginner after many years of not sewing, and now finding myself gaining confidence with online tutorials and very simple patterns. I too tend to sew skirts and overlook blouses, and was thinking about simple blouse PDF pattenrs, just before your video popped up! (No coincidences.) Many thanks. I feel already that you are a friend across the miles, having viewed your lovely videos before and recently subscribed. Your quiet and beautiful taste is cheering. BLESSINGS from the USA.
Oh, thank you so much, and what a lovely memory learning embroidery from your grandmother with your sister, that sounds so special. I'm so glad we can connect this way too and I hope you and your sister have so much fun getting back into embroidery 😊
@@Sarah_Naomi My pleasure! Yes, sis is excited about embroidery and I am excited just to see what she is planning and doing. So much different than sunbonnet girl pillowcases, ahem. Seeing what can be done on clothing is a-ma-zing! Again, thank you for your kind words and excellent content. YOU are such a delight.
Seigaiha are meant to be/represent calm waves, a super traditional geometric design. Depending on the design (two or three "rows" within a wave) it can look a little bit like the wifi-signal though! I love how you used it on your top, it looks incredible!
Congratulations on such a lovely wardrobe. All of your pieces turned out beautifully. Thank you for the free pattern. This will be the first garment piece I ever make. You're an inspiration.
I really loved everything about this video. I’m very “old school” in my own sewing and appreciate attention to interior finishing as well as choosing really nice fabrics…even for a simple tee such as the Hansie pattern. I joined Seamwork a few weeks ago, so this video really caught my eye. Unbelievably, I have also accumulated pattern blocks, thread, needles, and fabric to learn Sashiko embroidery. I lived in Japan over 30 years ago and loved everything about my time there. So it seems today was my lucky day that so many of my interests unexpectedly popped up in your lovely video. Thankyou!
These are very beautiful. And my favorite was the embroidered one. Honestly the darts did not seem to affect the embroidery pattern. They are all beautiful. Great work. And thank you for sharing your journey sewing them
My happiness at having this pop up in my feed this morning was unreal. I’ve never made a top before, my sewing projects have been, uh, diverse … so the Hansie top was going to be my first foray into tops. And then you come along with this! Wonderful! If you want to continue using sashiko in clothing, I believe you can purchase pattern sheets in larger dimensions for easier transfer. To save you some time and frustration 😅
I'm so glad to be of help and what a fun coincidence! Ah yes, if I try embroidering another project again I will try and find some larger tracing paper - my small tools made it pretty tricky! 😅
Hi Sarah! Your Hansie tops are absolutely lovely. I recently made one but was disappointed in the outcome, which I now realize was due to fabric choice; it definitely requires a drapey fabric, and I plan to give it another go after seeing how well your tops turned out. The biggest takeaway from your video, in my opinion, was your recommendation to use a skin-colored (whatever your skin color might be) fabric on the facing of translucent fabrics. Providing information such as that to new sewists is invaluable! Your facing blended into the background and allowed the simple shape of the top to take center stage. Thank you for all the great ideas.
Hello and thank you so much! I'm sorry your first try with this pattern didn't go so well with a stiffer fabric, I imagine that makes it a bit more boxy and the sleeves a little pointier, right? I hope your next try is a success! Thanks for your feedback on the see-through fabric tip, it was a game-changer when I learned it and I'm so glad it's helpful to others! Your kind words make my day 😊
I cannot believe the amount of time to make your embroidered top! A tour de force! And it is so beautiful congratulations. I have copied a ready to wear top from years ago that is basically the same style. I have made numerous variations, that are all different due to what the fabric 'says' I also have an adapted version for knits. Your tops are beautiful
Oh, thank you! 🥰 What a cool way to create a top pattern that is all your own and it must be so cool to be able to adapt it to your fabrics and style, bravo!
Sarah you are a wonderful seamstress. The pattern is fantastic. Loved them all but my favourite is also the hand stitched Japan art work. Just beautiful. Thank you for sharing. ❤️ 🇨🇦
Oh thank you! I’m glad you like the Sashiko one! The process of adding that embroidery turned out to be really soothing (mentally) - it was a pleasure to work on it 😊
Love these tops you made. The Sashiko embroidery is gentle to match the colour and style. Yes, be very proud of your work. Thank you for the tip to use skin colour fabric for the facings.
I love this pattern, its so simple and still has beautiful shaping. And the sashiko on that sea green light weight fabric is simply stunning! I'm in need of a simple white top, and am now eyeing this one, I love how you used a textured fabric.
They're amazing Sarah 😮💗 I love the different spin you put on all of them but my favourite is the sashiko top. So lovely to see you incorporate your Japanese heritage into your garments ❤️ love the music and editing too ☺️
Thank you for sharing❤. Making variations of this top have been a staple in my wardrobe for over 30 years. I have made plenty of dresses for myself using this for the top design and wen my daughter was a girl, I made her dresses like this too.
Your previous post about the top inspired me to try it and I have already made two and have plans for more. It really is the perfect top and so wearable. Thanks for the recommendation. Your versions though are on a different level - beautiful.
Those 3 tops turned out amazing. They really suit you and are very elegant. I just got a new top pattern that has 3 different types of sleeves. Kimono sleeve, 3/4 length and short sleeves with either a v neck or round neck. Have a fantastic time with your family. Safe travels
Sewists like me are always on the lookout for fabric when we travel. I have a favorite fabric shop in Mazatlan, Mexico and found shops in Taiwan when I went with my husband for his job.
Beautiful blouses. Thank you for sharing your creations . I just discovered Sashiko myself. I have been sewing on and off for 10 years on other types of projects and want to start to sew clothing. This is a great video to start my next project.
You are so delicate, beautiful, and feminine. Your dressmaking style makes me feel calm inside... I just came across your channel, but will be watching often for peace of my mind... Your videos are awesome and so appreciated 👏 💐 Thanks for your positive content, and please keep on bringing happiness to our hearts!!!
Thankyou for sharing such lovely makes! They all turned out gorgeous and very inspirational. Such useful tips as well. I have a more or less exact pattern that I drafted myself, the key is the bust darts as it fits much better with them. I tried several cap sleeve patterns first but the fit was awful so I’m glad I manage to draft my own. The simple style is perfect for embellishments as your lovely sashiko! I embellished one of mine with some applique and single block prints with textile paint. I use biasbinding for my neckline and for the one with applique I used the same fabric as the applique and turned it to the right side to get another detail.
Timely video for me to see, too. When I was young I could sew a couple of bandanas together for a top. I'm not good at shaping basic pieces from scratch and really need that dart. I have some smallish remnants I want to use and while I have some basic top patterns I really don't want to set in sleeves right now! I love all three of your Hansies, and really appreciate hearing your rationale behind the underlining and inter-/facing choices. These are lovely tops, and the Sashiko design on the aqua colored top is very special! I hope you had a wonderful vacation back home.- Kelly
I'm so glad that this video is helpful for you and it sounds this pattern would be a great one for you to try! Thank you for your well wishes too, I had a lovely time with my family 😊
Thank you so much for bringing the Hansie top to my attention, it's the perfect shape for me. Ive just finished making one up in a great linen/cotton blend print. Your's all look amazing. Thanks for inspiring us!
Beautiful! I love seeing all these versions. The only sashiko I've done is that same pattern on the standard dark blue (from a kit), and I was thinking of sewing it onto the back of a jean's jacket, as I'd like it to be seen more than just sewing it into a pillow. I really love how you started the embroidery down a bit from the neckline - looks amazing!
This is the pattern I’ve been looking for ❤Thank you so much Sarah ❤all three of your tops are beautiful and so exclusively executed, have a wonderful holidays with your love ones
Beautiful. You have enviable patience but looks like it was all worth it as version 3 is particularly gorgeous, both the colour of the fabric and the lovely embroidery. 😍
Thank you for sharing this free pattern! So true about the expense of buying patterns for someone that’s just starting out. I downloaded the pattern and printed it right away. I am so excited to sew my first top! ❤️
Whilst I'm not sure that I'll make this particular top, I thank you for the inspo. I have been looking for some new t shirts, but can't find anything I am willing to spend my money on, I had never even considered making my own!
Wowwwww. I’ve been looking for a great T-shirt type pattern for small pieces of fabric and this is it. PLUS all the good tips. Thanks so much. I’ll put your video in my Save bucket to watch again.
They all turned out beautifully and I will definitely be making one or two or three. I have looked for a pattern like this but this is perfect. Thank you so very much.
I did sashiko embroidery on the sleeve bottoms of a kimono jacket that I made this past winter. It's quite pretty, and you did a great job with your top. J'admire vraiment le grand savoir-faire des Japonais. C'est une sorte de perfection à imiter. I'm still working on my French. I understand about 20% of any conversation but my reading is pretty good! You really are an inspiration. Thank you!!
Oh, how lovely that must look! That's a great idea too - adding a little embroidery to embellish the sleeves of your jacket. Je trouve aussi le savoir-faire des japonais fascinant - un travail de subtilité et de jeux de contrastes - j'ai envie de m'y immerger ! Thank you for your kind words and I wish you great success in your French studies 😊
Always so thoughtful in your makes! They turned out so lovely, the embroidered version is truly so special. I'm a Seamwork member and you've def convinced me to give this pattern a try!
Oh my goodness, how absolutely beautiful your Hansie tops are. And with your attention to detail and your creativity, I so enjoyed watching your video. Thank you so much for sharing your gorgeous creations. I have seen some of your videos already and really appreciate your calm and clear explanations 💖 I have just subscribed, I really love what you do! Thank you 🙏
Just came across your channel. I so enjoyed watching you in making of the three tops. The sea green and embroidery is so lovely. I am sure you will enjoy wearing these g
Thank you so much for this video! It’s so calming to watch and has motivated me to start on my hansie tee. Unrelated but I really love the dresses you wear around 8mins when sewing the white top- the multi coloured and purple strapless dresses! I would love if you could point me towards a similar pattern 🎉
I'm so glad to hear it! And thank you! The two dresses I'm wearing while sewing up the first Hansie top (in white) is my Sew Over It Lottie dress in a multicolored Nani Iro cotton gauze and the second is the McCalls M7947 dress in a dusty blue slub linen. I hope that helps!
@@Sarah_Naomi thank you only problem is which of stash fabric gets made up first lol oh and the weather it’s very changeable spring here in New Zealand
Maybe my favorite video yet! ❤ adore the sashimi and am tempted to give it a go as I am in Japan and could probably find lessons or a kit to start. I think this pattern works well in light weight fabrics, which is what I need in my wardrobe too. So I may download the pattern and make a sashiko blouse as I already have a white and a navy fabric that 1 meter each- just enough 😅. Have a great vacation! BTW, You make a delightful ambassador for Seamworks’ beginners!
Thank you so much and yes, you're in the perfect place to learn sashiko! Sashiko embroidery looks so lovely in white thread on navy fabric, or in colored thread on white fabric, it sounds like you have the perfect fabric to work with!
Absolutely love the video and the tops! Perfect timing as I’m endeavouring my first project. I just saw that the shop in Frankfurt is permanently closed, I would have loved to check it out next time I’m in the area. The sashiko top is specifically beautiful! Thank you for another lovely video, your content is a pleasure to watch. ❤
Thank you for your kind words and I'm so glad this video helps! Good luck with your first project! I didn't know about the shop in Frankfurt, what a bummer, but thank you for letting me know 😊
Excellent presentation and video, and beautifully made tops. I'm glad to have happened across your channel and look forward to watching more of your videos. You mentioned wanting to begin your sashiko below the armscye, but I couldn't quite make out the term you used -- the "French ??? style". If you have a moment, would you mind letting us know what that is? Thanks so much!
Thank you and welcome! The style I mentioned with the stripes or Sashiko embroidery starting lower down is the French « marinière » style that was first a uniform style in the French navy (in the 19th century, I think) and made popular in everyday clothes by many fashion designers of the 20th century, but especially the designer John Paul Gautier 😊
One of my most favorite sounds: a beautiful pair of shears cutting throught fabric.

Lovely just like you and you are an excellent sewist❤
Oh thank you! 🥰

Welcome to this space! 😊
So glad I found this channel as I have this pattern and I have been thinking about giving it a go.
I’m so glad! Happy sewing! 🪡
@@Sarah_Naomi thank you only problem is which of stash fabric gets made up first lol oh and the weather it’s very changeable spring here in New Zealand
@@violetsidhe a very relatable conundrum! 😂 but I bet spring in New Zealand is glorious 🤩
@@Sarah_Naomi when it’s not raining or windy it is amazing. We have native bird nesting in ours and our neighbours trees
I love all your tops Sarah. The version with the sashiko is extraordinary. What a fun and elegant idea. xx Karen
Thank you!
Thank you for this great video.
Love the sashico shirt
So inspiring! Your sashiko version is absolutely beautiful!!
Thank you so much!
I didn't know about the shop in Frankfurt, what a bummer, but thank you for letting me know 😊
Lovely garments.
Thank you so much for sharing!!!😊
You are so welcome! 😊
Thank you!❤
Thanks 🤗
