    We review the NEW Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 G2 and compare it to the Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS II Lens. The Tamron 70-200 sells for just $1299 and provides image stabilization and constant f/2.8 - everything that the Canon provides. Is the Canon worth the extra $600?

    Got to say - Steve came in with a Canon preference bias and held on to it until the end. Truth is Tamron is changing the game entirely. They are putting out superior - and YES professional quality products at lower prices, and no, that doesn't make them focused on the hobbyist. In fact I hate when people say "if you're on a budget..." What a load of rubbish that is. Is anyone not on a budget of some kind? Especially pro photogs? I look for value and the best return on my investment. That doesn't mean I'm cheap, it means I'm smart about how I use my resources. Tamron IS changing the game, and Bravo to them for doing it! If you spend the extra cash to buy Canon glass when you have this Tamron alternative available, then you are just drinking the koolaide because there is no advantage to the Canon version that makes it worth the premium price when compared to something as great as the Tamron.

      @entremontanas7614 yes I am. I have a 70-200mm and a 24-70mm. Both pro series. They still represent excellent glass at a more reasonable price.
      That said, I do also have some Canon L series glass. I especially love my 100mm f2.8 macro L. No question that Canon's glass is well made and high quality.

    Hi guys! Nice review but you could improve on a few points:
    - the difference in focal distance you are seeing is focus breathing, you should explain that this is only visible when focusing at close subjects
    - talking about this you could have also compared minimum focus distances, this is quite interesting since the Tamron can let you get very close to subjects and in some cases this can compensate for the focus breathing issue, and actually get you an even bigger image than with the Canon
    Thanks for all your videos and continue the good work ! :)

    The fact that Tamron came out with a comparable lens to Canon 7 years later at $600 less speaks about technology and how it gets cheaper over time. Yes Canon was ahead and released it a while back but that’s because they do have the technology and research on their side. If we’re talking simply in photo quality and straightforward comparison, why would anyone pay $600 more for a lens that produces about 95% of the same result? To say that if you’re going to use it for professional work, is a bit of a stretch since the only negative I heard was the ergonomics.

      Dennis Rongo Resale value, build quality and full compatibility with Canon cameras. I have the Canon version and once the lens fell off from my back pack, into a concrete floor (height about 1 meter) and surprsingly nothing is broken. If I'm looking for a budget, I won't mind buying Tamron. I love my Tamron 17-55 f/2.8 so much.

      This happens when Canon advocates pretend to do a review of something, anything else. I was in a Nikon/Canon "church" all my life, and was arrogant enough to even try to acknowledge that other companies actually catched up and surpassed those two. I was suprised that even Tamron recently did it as well. Me and my friend, we both were nothing but hardcore Canon fans, but last 2 years we moved to Fuji and Panasonic camp, and we are never coming back. Canon stopped truly innovating long time ago, and since then they just been sleeping on their own laurels, slapping their logo on barely changed products, and increasing the price tag. Just like Google did with their Pixels. Another friend of mine, who is retired press photographer, said that 90% of people in the industry shoots with Canons/Nikons. It is like everybody is driving Audi's and VW's - all pictures look the same, not matter who took it. Because everybody shoots from the same positions, with the same 5D Mark IV's, with the same 20-700's. He said: "-One of the reason I got higher rates is because my equipment wasn't "mainstream", and editors always seek for that little edge of difference, that Canon doesn't have anymore". So, that's your answer. The same is happening in Video world, as well as with software: Adobe is Canon, in the way, that's why so many people (including me, after 17 years of using Premiere) are moving to Final Cut Pro and Resolve. There's just simply too much oblivious, ignorant people that are refusing to acknowledge that the change is not coming - it already did, and long time ago.

    crappy effort... we wanted to see shots from the new Tamron... we do not need a review on the Canon that has been on the market 5 years. Very annoying that 75% of the time was spent on the Canon. Thats the trouble with Canon shooters reviewing ANYthing that isn't Canon. The Canadians are very bad about that.

    I'm thinking of Buying the Tamron, I think I can work around the focus-breathing problems, particularly if the lens has a closer focus distance. Obviously I would prefer the Canon, but it's a huge price difference. The ultimate question is whether to sacrifice a stop of light and go with the Canon F4 version.

      Thx. That's to bad. I don't understand why Tamron would not at least release this in an Amount version. Especially with the A99ii being released. It's to bad. FE mount would be great as well. I had the 70-200GM from sony but the image quality at least on my copy did not justify the price tag so I returned it. Really want that extra stop of light for indoor sports like basketball.

    • @shaolin95

    So you'd take the Canon over the Tamron, a perfectly capable and obviously professional grade piece of glass, because of the "investment factor"? If the build quality is near the same, and the difference between shots is negligible (both of which are proven true in this "review"), why not take the newer lens for 600 bucks less. Let go of your first party glass pride, and accept that your "investment" just got bodied by something 600 bucks cheaper, bud.

  • @lensman5762

    Tamron lens suffers badly from ' Focus Breathing ', where close subjects appear to be smaller. At longer distances , there are no issues and they reach the advertised focal length.

      Actually I ordered a replacement and even the second copy has the same sound. The sound is more audible when I keep the filter-side down (Camera side up) and try to gently tilt/move the lens by say around 5-10 cms. If I hear from upclose, then I can hear a sound of something kinda rattling inside (maybe its the movement / play to accommodate for the Vibration Control VC) I dont know what it is, but I am preety nervous about it.... and Wanted to check if that's normal. Ive tried to use it, it focuses and works perfectly fine...just that this minor rattling sound is bothering me. I dont know If I should send it back or keep it. Ive already sent the first one... :(

    I'm too mad at the Canon service. They told me that my EF28-200L IS USM cannot be repaired due to a lack of spare parts and that the repair is uneconomical too expensive. But they made me an offer for a new lens for 500€ cheaper. How are they going to fix it if the new one breaks? With Tamron I get a 5 year warranty. I am very satisfied with the Tampron SP's 2.8/15-30mm G2, 2.8/24-70mm and 150-600mm G2. Consequently, I will also buy a Tamron SP 2.8/70-200mm G2.
    BTW: a small company in Germany repaired the 20-300L for just 300€ and gave a 1-year warranty on the repair.

    I read or saw a video somewhere that stated that aftermarket lenses tend to be closer percentage wise to the advertised focal length when dealing with mid to longer telephoto lenses.
    I believe that the Tamron is more like a 68-198mm and the Canon is closer to an 78-220mm (guesstimate).
    That being said. Is the center sharpness partially better on the Canon because you are standing in the same spot, but are filling the frame more so with the Canon then the Tamron? It is a little bit harder to tell on video.

      No - It is slow AF but I 1/2 press for AF before I start filming and all is fine - works great for me.

    I bought a Tamron & I'm gonna get rid of it. Been using Canon for over 40 years and just can't get used to the zoom ring at the far end of the lens. Also, it's too close to the focus ring. Hard to zoom without hitting the focus ring. I knocked more than one photo out of focus, frustrating. I've also noticed when compared side by side with my 70-200 F4 L Canon, the Tamron is more of a 60-190 MM. Check one out at your camera store B/4 you buy one.

    How funny these videos are more for first party funboys to get some ripoff validation other than real review as you put in the title "Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 G2 REVIEW"

  • @johnsg8
    @johnsg8 7 років тому

    I can't see any detail in VR shots. The Canon looks consistently underexposed by 1/2 stop. If you are shooting faster subjects like sports, that's a VERY big deal.First party lenses always have better AF.The fact that Canon hasn't released a new lens is not an issue. If anything, it would make me buy a Tamron if I am in the market now. You may want to rent the Canon but a 70-200 is one of the most used lenses by a lot of purchasers.

    The Tamron does focus breathe however some people say that canon isn't a true 200mm it's a 210-220mm focal length. How true that is I'm not sure

    • @chirag4
      @chirag4 7 років тому

      No, it is only 200mm, not more than that. This is a fact.

    • @chirag4
      @chirag4 7 років тому

      Tony Northrup mistook it for 225mm and he later corrected his error in judging the canon 70-200 IS II saying that it is not what he originally thought, but 200mm only. You can check his videos. Thanks.

      For sure. A used one is only 250 -300 less for a good condition lens. Considering the lens could be 7 years old and still holds 80% of its value is fantastic.

    To be generous; this was almost a waste of time. You are really just doing a commercial for canon, not really reviewing both lenses in depth. Don't be afraid to be honest and say that at over $600 bucks and just by a hair almost the same quality, the Tamron is a better buy. What about sample pics BTW? I expected more from both of you.

      Hey Ron, We missed the mark on this one - I have found it difficult to actually teach on workshops AND create proper reviews at the same time. I have backed off trying to create reviews while on tour and just gather data and spend time really thinking about the value. That said I do think valid points were made.

    Before the other guy opened his mouth, I can already tell he’s already a bit biased towards his Canon. Not everyone will have the same issue as him artistically or ergonomically. It’s not a comparison since he’s been using Canon already and he’s used to the feel.

  • @Janet_Airlines802

    I can't remember who said it, I think Ken Rockwell . He said it's possible in ten years maybe less that the Tamron might not work on newer Canon bodies. Kind of like Sony having problems recognizing non native lenses. I'm saving for a 70-200 now. I came close to buying a Tamron. I'm gonna wait till I can afford the Canon version iii.

  • @theflyest203
    @theflyest203 5 років тому +1

    bad review the tamron is a better and more professional lens than that cannon for less money and the slight focus breathing is made up by walking in since the minimum focus distance is much closer on the g2 which would lead to filling the frame much more.. also that cannon is terrible with back lighting as its coatings are old in which the tamron can easily handle back light and flaring and not lose contrast and get washed out images like that cannon reason cannon released a version 3 to fix those issues...

    • @theflyest203
      @theflyest203 5 років тому

      It is True the focus breathing only happens under 2meters and the Tamron has a much better minimum focus distance which makes up the difference and then some for the breathing it does around 2meters away from a subject I own the g2 @@lukazupie7220

    • @lukazupie7220
      @lukazupie7220 5 років тому +1

      Twilson Tony Northrup made a comparison and canon was capable of bigger magnification, so for now i will trust him over you, sorry:)

    • @theflyest203
      @theflyest203 5 років тому

      luka zupie his comparison was with the g1 not the G2 and you keep taking advise from a guy that said shooting JPEG is for pros not Raws lol sorry you are wrong and misinformed completely.. check Matt grangers UA-cam on the G2 he compares to the 200 f2 and the G2 even beat that in minimum focus distance which closed the gap and passed it with any focus breathing under 2meters from the subject.. like i said i own the lens and know what I am talking about

    • @lukazupie7220
      @lukazupie7220 5 років тому +1

      Twilson you are right, tony was testing older version. Sorry about that.
      Anyway, you still don’t get 200mm compression, which is i would guess for most people more important than maximum magnification.

    I just cannot understand making $600 difference so important for this important lens. I am paid here where I am working 10-20x less then same work in USA and I can easily afford Canon 70-200 IS II. Even after I went from 5D3 to C100 for video and when 70-200 isn't useful crop video range anymore for me, I left that lens for not more then 10 photography jobs per year and private use. People in America need good financial advisory, because somehow they have a more money then rest of the world and everything is expensive to them (and they have cheapest electronics). Just do not make mistake and buy Tamron, there is reason why that lens is cheaper (and not - it isn't because Canon has bigger profit margin, thats a myth), and you don't want to find why is cheaper few months after purchase.
