Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 on an Entry Level Camera (Nikon/Canon) - Demo and Review!

- The 70-200 f/2.8 is a go-to lens for many professional photographers. I got my hands on a Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 and decided to see how it performs on an entry level crop sensor camera. I used my trusty Nikon D3400 for this demo, but I could have used any entry level compatible camera in the Nikon or Canon range (D3500, D5600, D7200, Canon T7i, T6i, etc.).
Regardless of brand (Tamron, Nikon, Canon, Sony), the 70-200 f/2.8 is a GREAT versatile lens, but is it worth the money? The answer will depend on your needs:). I have shot the same range from Nikon, Canon, and Sony and feel Tamron is on par with all three.

Whenever I think about upgrading my camera from D3400, I watch your videos to say to myself that D3400 is very capable. I got the tripod, nifty fifty and the 35mm on your suggestion and they did not let me down so far. Thank you :)
Glad to be of help!:) I have taken many shots with various cameras and feel the D3400 along with many others in the same line are capable of capturing great images. A great shot is not necessarily the result of expensive gear, rather a great shot is the result of a photographer's ability to use the gear:).
I was looking at one of the videos (for Tamron 70-200 MM 2.8) and then in the right corner saw your thumbnail with this lens and dropped that video and oh man your presentation is so simple yet so powerful and skill is just great :) and the best part is you don't just recommend expensive glass like most of YTers do who are just 20-30-35 Year old, you know this profession really well and guide all the people in the right direction (rather than expensive/Wide open aperture is better)

The Tamron 70-200 is one of my main go to lenses for a wide variety of projects. Even though I use a different camera body now, I started out with a Nikon D3400 and I recommend it to anyone starting out in photography. It is such a capable entry level camera. Combine the D3400 with the Tamron 70-200 and you have an excellent combination. Along with learning the fundamentals of photography and a willingness to experiment, I would say good glass is one of the top most important elements in photography. This lens is a must have if at all possible. It is great to see you do this demo and review Mark.
Thanks for the post/feedback and agreed!:) Good glass is an important factor to consider. No need to get a great camera body and attach poor quality glass ... resulting images will be sub-par. Some will think bad images are a result of a bad camera when they should first consider the glass:).
I do photography for my Fire Department, and my 2 lenses i use are the 24-70 and the 70-200 G2, both Tamron on my Nikon 7200. Love those lenses and allows me to run and gun and capture it all!
Sounds like a great setup Dave!:) A few years ago I happen to have my camera gear with me as I drove to the gym. On the way I stumbled upon firefighters working to extinguish a blaze. I caught some great action shots that I later sent to the fire department. The 70-200 f/2.8 would be a great lens to pair with the 7200.

@@RealWorld I just got this exact lens last week and am using it on the D3400 as well 😆 I loooove it. It's quite heavy, but I feel like it's worth it. Just a question though: have you tried the G2 version? Is it so much better than this one?
Because of your videos I was bought Nikond3400.. now i consider what to buy from telephoto lens, and again you give me the answer.

Glad to be of help Greg!:) This a solid lens with a wide aperture - great for sports, etc. I also see many photographers use this lens for portraits.
Always look forward to your videos especially since we both use the D3400. I just recently purchased the Tamron 24-70 G2 and I love it. Can't wait to get the 70-200 whenever I recoup from my 24-70 purchase lol.

Glad you've posted a new video! Invested in this lens, no regrets, but it is heavy. Will always keep my fixed 50, but the options from the 70 to 200 have been worth it. The VC options really help. At least than half the price of the Nikon, well it's a great piece if glass in my opinion.

Nonetheless, I plan to break it down and show some sample photos so stay tuned. LOL - agreed ... relatively heavy lens, keep the fixed 50mm but lean on the 70-200 whenever flexibility is needed:).

That lens is amazing! I had it on my D7100! It is fast, crisp and the bokeh is beautiful! The stabilization is crazy good! Strongly advise the investment! I have since sold it along with my Nikon gear and invested in a Fuji X-T3 system and the Fuji 50-140 f/2.8 is their answer to the 70-200mm....but that Tamron is hard to beat!

Great video as always! For those like me who cannot afford a lens at this level, I would recommend looking for a used 80-200 F2.8 Nikon AF-D lens - I bought one in great shape for about $350. No image stabilization, and heavy, but has a tripod collar, built like a tank, and takes great photos. It is manual focus on 3000 and 5000 series cameras, but works well on 7000 series and models like the D300 and above. Just a possible alternative - cheers!

Hey! Don't know if you still remember me or not. I first started watch your video about explaining the manual mode and also the D3400 videos. I then believe photography isn't all about the equipment but more of the skill or idea. After considering quite awhile, I purchased a second hand d5200 for nearly 220 us dollar plus an extra battery from my cousin. You're the one I learnt and discovered the magic of raw images so I did take lots of pictures in raw. I had taken some images since I bought the camera and am very excited to maybe receive comments from you. Is there anyway I can show them to you? It would be extremely helpful! By the way, really love your work so humble as always. Keep it up :)

I use this same A009N lens with a Nikon D7200 all the time. I get great action shots with this combo.

Very good video, i'm on the go for buying this lens for my D7200.
Some people telling that have some front back focusing problem.
I have not noticed any significant front to back issues ... note the minimal focal distance though which is 1.3 meters:).

That is a nice lens indeed, super sharp, but I got instead the canon 70-300 is ii, more reach, lighter, cheaper and outstanding AF/stabilization. In my case, I prefer lighter lenses, if the package is to heavy I tend to leave the camera at home. Greetings from Chile ! Superb work as usual !

RealWorld where do I start ....it did up until I watched your video on flash photography ..then started looking at off camera flash photography..so went to the d7100..then I watched your video on the fixed 50 vs the fixed 35. And now let's just say .i take decent pictures I must say thanks to the tutorials you put up..I think I have 2 projects I did on UA-cam not my best work but good enough to share with family and friends. and you can use this lens for sports photography (which is what people mostly do with it because of fast AF speed and that wide aperture), planning to buy this real soon
Agreed ... the f/2.8 all the way through is nice to help achieve a fast shutter for various zoom shots (sports, wildlife, etc.).

Thanks for the post/feedback/question:). Would I recommend upgrading? Depending on your needs, yes. The Nikon 55-200 is f/4-5.6 whereas the Tamron 70-200 is f/2.8 all the way through. I know a good number of professional photographers who use this lens for portraits. The f/2.8 gives a nice soft bokeh which is great for close-ups/portraits/etc.
........I'm in love with this review against a Crop factored camera (i officially have no interest in going full frame) .... Good bye sigma (reviews on its 70-200 Art have been disappointing) .... welcome Tamron 70-200m G2.

Hi Sir, love your videos. They are very unbiased and honest. I am confused between buying D750 & 24-120mm f4 VR kit or, D7500 (same sensor as D500) +18-140mm f/5.6 kit & Tamron 70-210mm f4 VC. Price is same for both combination around 1700 USD. I don't need the D500 features because i am not in birding. The D850 is out of budget around 3100 USD. I love Bigcats and i shoot mainly bigcats in the wild and a few landscapes (not a priority). I hate noise and would love to get some good background separation in bushes where the background is not very far away from the subject, for example a tiger. D750 has excellent ISO performance but reduces the reach than crop bodies but it has 10mp DX mode if i need extra reach. I currently own the D3400 and 18-55 VR and 70-300mm f/6.3 VR kit (its very sharp and fast but background separation is not very good) and recently got a used Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6 VR for 650 USD. The D3400 mount seems very fragile for the heavy 200-500mm, it seems risky.
What combination will be best for low noise and good background separation (for ISO upto 6400, if needed a bit further also)-
1) D750+200-500mm f/5.6 & D3400+24-120mm f/4
2) D7500+200-500mm f/5.6, & D3400+70-210mm f/4.
The 18-55mm & 70-300mm kit lens will also be with me.
Thanks for the post/feedback/question!:) You have done your research!:) Many bird/wildlife photographers will choose a crop sensor because of the reach (like the D500). Nonetheless, the full sensors are nice and provide more recovery from various situations (high ISO, cropping, etc.). I shot with the 7000 series for many years as well ... the 7000 series leverages a similar sensor as found in the 3000 and 5000 series, however the 7000 series has AF built into the body and is well constructed (weather sealed). If given the option, I would lean towards #1 (the D750) ... the D750 is solid:).
@@RealWorld Yes i really like the colors and depth of field of full frame sensors. I am also leaning towards the D750 since i don't do birding a lot, only bigcats and other mammals. I think a clean image at 500mm is better than a noisy image at 750mm. If in any situation there's no other way, i could switch to DX mode.
I bought the D3400 after watching all your videos.
So, i am buying the D750 with the 24-120 f/4 kit or if possible with a Tamron 70-210 f/4.

@@stripes_in_raw d500 is THE BEST crop sensor camera Nikon makes.. it is not just for birding. You shoot in the elements with a Nikon d3400? That entry level camera will not last (no sealing of any kind). Sell that 3400 as well as the junky kit lenses it came with and put the money towards a d500 if wild life and nature photography is truly what you shoot. It's AF capabilities as well as ISO performance rivals and even surpasses the d750.
@@donathan82 no it doesn't surpass D750 in ISO. It may in studio lighting conditions under High ISO but not in real jungles, it doesn't. Compare them both in 500px or flikr in scenarios like maasai mara at dawn and dusk and see the differences between D500 and D750 above 3200 ISO till 10000 ISO. Sharpening and Details are both different things. A sharpened image in post with noise reduction simultaneously looks bad compared to a not so sharpened but detailed image out of the camera. For Birding D500 is no brainer because of AF and Buffer. For mammals D7500 is enough because of same sensor. No one needs more 51 points AF to click mammals. The D3400 is an excellent camera with the 70-300mm, not a junk at all. Got many images featured by BBC earth insta page and also many in exhibitions and twice in Top 10s only with the D3400 and 70-300mm DX VR.

On a budget would the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro AF Lens vs Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 .. Would the older version be worth the current price instead of buying the new version .. Pro's vs con's between the two lens ..
One of the major differences in VC (vibration control). If you have some extra money, I might stretch towards the newer version ( amzn.to/2TP7OGX ). If not, the non-VC version will produce great results as seen in this video.

Good glass makes a world of difference, even on a cheaper body. Sensor is the same as the more expensive APS-C bodies, just less bells and whistles. Nice glass makes that 24mp sensor shine!
Ahhhh yes ... agreed!:) I see some people with nice sensors/cameras but bad/cheap glass. If you have a nice camera/sensor, might as well use decent glass:). The resulting image is only as good as the weakest link/component.
I have a D3400 and due to budgetary issues I havent been able to invest a lot in gear. I mainly shoot people. I have the 50mm 1.8g , the 18-55 kit lens and the 55-200 from Nikon. Lately I've been thinking to invest. Would you suggest to invest in this lens (second hand) or buy the D750 second hand instead?
I can understand and appreciate your situation:). I would consider looking for a used D750. The D750 is a great/solid full sensor camera. Keep in mind that you will also need to invest in new/used lenses.

I have the nikon 55-300 F3.5/F5.6 and I really like it . it is really great for steady shoots but not for actions. off course , to be able to open the aperture to 2.8 is great but the price is also great 1400$ USD.
at the moment I found sigma 17-50 2.8 great as all around lens as well for portraits . I own also both nikon 50mm 1.8 and 35mm 1.8 but found that I sigma is more versatile.
Now my big concern is about mirrorless cameras and how to attache these old lenses to the new cameras ....

People in Europe, try looking for other brands than K&F. At least when I bought from Amazon.de the Andoer version was cheaper, and is similar.
Take note; you might want clamps instead of the twist system. I liked them to begin with, but honestly I'd rather have the clamps - To each their own 😊
Thanks for the post/feedback/info!:) Lots of fun shooting with this lens ... spent the day taking shots and having a good time. The butterflies were interesting as I never tried to capture them before ... fun to see what happens when leveraging continuous mode and shoot away:). Someone will certainly be interested in the 18-250 lens. You might consider the Nikon fixed 40mm f/2.8 ( amzn.to/2AY9ffT ) ... this is a true macro lens capable of shooting solid portraits as well. I used the lens on my macro video ( ua-cam.com/video/TzdY3azkzYc/v-deo.html ) and might do a full review on it relatively soon:). Regarding tripods ... I like both but had a few cheaper clamps break on me. The twist will not break but can become difficult to twist over time:).

Omw out of the door to shoot some pictures while the sun is finally blessing me with some light, and try my chinese fixed 50 again - Need to see if I still find it 'to zoomy', or if it's just me 😁
Thanks for the insight on clamps. Honestly I should probably just use the twisties some more and finally learn them (that's my issue - Not locking them properly then having my tripod 'slip'n'slide' haha).
Also I forgot to mention the Andoer monopod uses a different thread size so people/I need a 'converter'.

I just bought this lens. I usually shoot in P or S mode jpeg. Can I keep the aperture on with this lens or do I need to lock it in what aperture I'm going to think I need when shooting? Is it going to work with ot against the automatic aperture in my camera if I leave the lens one on? I'm shooting with a nikon D5600.

Great question as I believe Tamron came out with a newer version of this lens ... both are solid and the form factor changed slightly.
This is the DI DC USD? Was looking at that one but also the LD IF Macro version. Do you have any experience with the older one?

My Nikon 3400 is saying the lens is incompatible. I need help please.
If you are using a Nikon lens and see the message, check the connector pins on both body of the camera and the lens. if they look fine and you have tried to detach and re-attach the lens with no luck, i suspect a problem with the lens or body. if other lenses work, the issue is with the lens.

Both are solid but I might lean slightly towards the D3500 or better yet the D3400 ( amzn.to/2WXruJv ) ... higher ISO (25600 vs 12800 ... you may never need/want to go above 12800 though:)) and much better battery life (1550 vs 430 shots). Nikon also removed the AA filter from both (this is the anti-aliasing filter which tends to soften images slightly (not a huge deal but worth noting). The xt100 offers a rotating screen which is nice along with built-in time lapse. I suggest the D3400 because Nikon removed the function button and IR sensor from the handle in the 3500:).

Thanks for the post/question:). Yes, this would be a great lens for sports. I used the same lens for football, softball/baseball, volleyball, soccer, etc.:) Since the f/2.8 carries all the way through the zoom range, you will have good light at 200 which is great when you are on the sidelines. I really like the fixed 50 f/1.8 and fixed 35 f/1.8 as well:).

@@RealWorld I bought the G2 version like new, in box from mpb. I still have the 24-70mm f/2.8 original VC version, which is still way better than the Sigma. DSLR lens prices are still very high, for a system that is supposedly dead. Thanks for the informative videos!

Hi great review ! Professional and to the point. I do a lot of wildlife photography, was wondering if i can use this instead of the canon f/5.6 400 fixed that i have, its heavy and becomes cumbersome without a tripod ....

Hi, I want to ask you what do you think of a monopod (in general ...), but of this type / Manfrotto Element Monopod Aluminum red. Thanks.
I have a tripod that converts to a monopod and also have a dedicated monopod. When I received my dedicated monopod, I thought I would use it more but that was not the case:). I rarely use my monopod. Why? Monopod pods are great if you have a heavy heavy lens ... like a fixed 400 or perhaps the 70-200 on a long day (standing on the sidelines of football game, etc.). When I shoot with the 70-200, I am typically walking around with the camera/lens slung around my shoulders, etc. ... no need for a monopod.

this is a GREAT lens if you need more reach with a wide aperture. if you do not need the extra reach, stay with the 24-70:).
I really need to get 70/200 I do a lot of sports but I used my 18/400 and I still get goid photo but I know the 70/200 but the best choice to have thanks for sharing
Thanks for the post Mike!:) The 18-400 is a great lens and one I reviewed not too long ago ... really like the extended range. Nonetheless, the 70-200 opens all the way to f/2.8 which is nice when shooting fast action sports from a distance:).
All fx lenses ( f mount) can be use in both dx and fx bodies ? And vice versa
FX lenses can be used on DX cameras without any issues. DX lenses can be used on FX cameras, however you will experience strong vignetting:).
Great vid as usual. Is there anywhere on the market a monopod that is heavy-duty enough to be used as a trekking pole?

Thanks for the post/feedback/question!:) While the 18-270 is a solid lens, it should not be mistaken for the 70-200:). The major difference is the aperture. The 70-200 can open to f/2.8 all the way through the zoom which means you can open to 2.8 at 200 which is awesome. The 18-270 will open to 6.3 at 270 ... not completely certain what it would open to at 200 but definitely not 2.8:).

One question. I’m trying to photograph a person holding a tassel out in front of them and focus only on the tassel. Any suggestions on settings for a pic like this? I also have a 50mm I’ll bring along.

Thanks for the post/question Tyler!:) I can relate to your situation as well as I plan to photograph a graduation ceremony soon:). I would consider using the fixed 50 and aperture priority (ISO 100 and let the camera control the shutter). Set the aperture to something wide like f/2.2 (you could use f/1.8 but the depth of field will be very tight). Have the graduate hold the tassel at arms length > lock focus on the tassel and take the shot ... should be nice:).

Since I'm only taking pictures for myself, and even *if* I start taking some work doing portraits etc. I'll still be sticking with the D3400.
I think I won't make the jump until 'I get serious with it', and by then I'll probably sacrifice the D3400 for some mods or maybe give it away to a family member 😊
The only thing that nags me a bit is the inevitable 'money pit' that is lenses - Once I start having +5 lenses or something like that it'll probably annoy me a bit that I could've had a mirrorless body and just 1 nice lens.. 🤷♂️ Ah well.. 1st world issues I guess :D

Ahhhhh yes, the debate between mirror and mirrorless:). I have given this a good amount of thought over recent years. While there are some benefits to mirrorsless, I feel both result in great images which is the most important aspect to any camera in my opinion. I am looking to get my hands on the Sony A7 III at some point and possibly make the jump but like you, I would need to swap out various lenses:). This might be worthy of a video at some point as I have many thoughts on the subject. Regarding the 40mm ... nice!:) A great lens with true macro capabilities. I might create a full review video on the lens ... used it in the macro video but did not put it through the full pace/test for my viewers.
What about wedding photography tell me the sharpness of this non vc and non sp varient

Looking at buying the A001E, EF mount, Tamron 70-200 2.8. I think its the 1st generation? Does anyone know where to find more info on it? Ive been looking. Im a beginner and I only have Canon kit lenses, so I know the newer Tamrons are better but I can get this lens at a great price for now. Any thoughts on that earlier model? I have a Canon 80d.
Thanks for the post/question:). This is a solid choice in my opinion (1st gen 70-200). After putting the lens through the paces, I feel it is a great option and you will not miss much between the 1st and 2nd gen.

Brother plz help me i have the same lens with canon eos 600 D but my aperture remains variable. It increases with zoom which reduces my image quality. When i use the same lens on Canon 1200 D it does happen. What to do plz help me..

Ahhh yes, I did a review on the 70-300 which I found to be surprisingly good - ua-cam.com/video/1RaXjNuD6ls/v-deo.html ... check the description on the video for a link to the lens. In addition, you might look for a used 70-300. Nikon included the 70-300 non VR in a kit which was a good deal (that is what I tested). Nikon also sells the 70-300 VR which is nice because it includes VR:).
Just one question, does the aperture also increase by 1.5 times on crop bodies or does the F number remain as it really is. I plan to take a 70-200 tamron G2 which also goes on Dx and Fx bodies and I own a d7200 so I ask that will the aperture be 2.8 or 4.2 also i know it will actually be a 105-300 lens Thanks in advance

In short, yes - a crop sensor body impacts the focal length and aperture when compared to a full sensor body. The aperture nor focal length actually change, rather the sensor size impacts both when compared to a full sensor body.

You can try Amazon or consider used from eBay or something similar. The lens is expensive but should retain it's value relatively well.
