The best thing Tipper Gore and the rest of the PMRC did was take the music industry to court. The result was the Parental Advisory label put on explicit albums. That DROVE UP the sales of those albums.

Also, I'd argue that - statistically - organized religion has a body count SIGNIFICANTLY higher than any genre of music is alledged to have.
Even when taking a single period in history:
- the Spanish inquisition (3000~5000 killed)
- the Crusades (continuous tours of conquest & killings for about 200 years)
Of course, not all conflicts that involve a religious aspect or involve religious groups ARE in fact 'religious wars' or 'holy wars'.
Even with the Iconoclast / 'Beeldenstorm' / 'Bildensturm' in the Netherlands and Germany, socio-economic inequality was very much part of it - (Catholic churches decorated with gold, while the people were starving)
But organized religion does play a huge part in creating 'Us' and 'Them' groups, and those DO play a part in conflicts.
It creates a clear image of:
- who is part of the group, and who is the adversary (in Group Theory, literally "Us" vs "Them");
- who is (alledgedly) "right", and who is (alledgedly) "wrong";
- who is (alledgedly) righteous, and who is "barbaric";
- who has the right to live on certain land or control certain areas, and who needs to F* off (or die as a consequence).
Rock & Metal mostly divide people into "who is cool" and "who is square".
And then... No killings involved: mostly self-expression, self-exploration, self-examination, and a sense of being at home among more open-minded people.

Christian metalhead here. There is no such thing as “evil music”. Music is what you choose to make of it. Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne and even James Hetfield are actually Christians. These are the founders of heavy metal. Just because you look scary doesn’t mean you are evil. Heck, the Bible says angels, messengers of God look terrifying. Yes there are satanists and satanic themes in heavy metal but there are musical and artistic masterpieces in the Renaissance about satanic themes. Just because you put lyrics and an electric guitar into classical symphonic music doesn’t make it incredibly evil. Also, there’s such thing as Christian Metal. Eg. Stryper, Narnia

Black metal has been a worldwide thing and apart from a small Norwegian cluster while it was forming you very rarely find such incidents. You can't stop human idiocy, but that doesn't put a label on all black metalheads worldwide.
I'm a metalhead too and while I very much dislike such bands I can understand why these people chose to promote their ideas through music and specifically metal, cause it's what I do too when writing lyrics or composing. As for evil or not... everything is in the interpreters hands.
I see people campaigning against metal cause they simply fail to see that 90% of the time everything is cause of their own interpretation but I don't see those same people caring at all about, say "rap/hip hop" songs that are about violence against others, drugs or simply "lick this pussy just like you should". That's commercial right now and it's ok, I suppose... Hypocrisy at its finest by certain people like always.

If only they could see the irony, the parallels between their youth, and the youth they complain about. Parents in the 50s were certain that Elvis' swinging hips were going to be the downfall of society. Parents in the 60s had plenty of drug and sex related music to concern themselves over. Parents in the 70s partly faced the continuation of 60s music, but also had all kinds of war-related songs and drug paraphernalia to fret over.

My 15 year old has been a metal head since birth. He's one of the kindest, most respectful, considerate teens I know. Kids grow up to be violent jerks because of poor parenting, lack of attention or insufficient meaningful communication with adults, not because of music.
To all those worried moms out there: try listing to your kids without judgement, try unconditional love, try giving your kids boundaries while communicating why those boundaries exist, try allowing your child to experience logical consequences for their decisions while pairing that with meaningful guidance on how to make better choices in future, try treating your child like a person instead of an accessory to your image, try letting them express themselves while showing them healthy outlets for their feelings, try validating your kids feelings without encouraging them to think they are the center of the universe.
Parenting is hard. Finding a balance between authority and ally is hard. Offering guidance without trying to make your child in your own image is hard. Learning to admit to your kids that parents are humans that make mistakes is hard, and apologizing when you are wrong is hard. Setting a good example every day because your child is watching you is hard. It's the most difficult and important job you'll ever do. You won't be a perfect parent, but you can try your best, and you can be honest with your children. You can show your kids that learning is a process that never stops, and that as long as you never give up then you'll be able to be proud of your own accomplishments some day.

I don’t believe that mother saying the music caused her son to become mentally unstable. I don’t believe for a second her home was so loving and stable as she claims it was. When I was a a child, I listened to music to escape from the abuse going on in my home. I found Depeche Mode at the age of 10. Their music saved my life.
If a child has a loving family, and healthy environment while growing up, there is no way he would become suicidal just because he likes and adores an artist and their music.... I am interested in all kinds of metal and rock music, death metal too, all of them probably. And i am usually a happy, kind person 🤣

Was shopping at the HEB a few months back, and as i strolled past the frozen section to grab some popcorn shrimp, a sharply dressed old man (like 65-ish) noticed my Amon Amarth shirt and told me i needed to "repent before i end up in Hell". I looked at him and said, "Hell?... If I'm going anywhere it's Valhalla" all the while flashing the horns at him. He didn't say much after that, he just had the most perplexed look on his face.

The PMRC sold more records in the 80s/90s than anything else.
People at the time blamed what their kids listen to rather than acknowledging that the root of teenage depression was, and is, in the family. Drugs, alcohol, and heavy metal were their escapade rather than the problem root.
These are the faces of people who never actually talked or listened to their children. Dialogue is important.
This is almost nostalgic for me and I actually thank some of these Karens (most notably Tipper Gore) for opening my mind. I was strictly into punk at the time of the Satanic Panic, and was most concerned about what was happening to The Dead Kennedys, until the legends that are Dee Snider and John Denver spoke up in court and earned my teenage respect. 'We're Not Gonna Take It' indeed!

It’s just a chemical imbalance in his brain, and if the music that speaks to him helps to make sense if the world so be it. My dad was born in the late 40s and my mum early 50s. I was born in early 90s. I'm a huge rock and metal fan. My mum doesn't approve of the music I listen to but doesn't really mention it. My dad is a musician and often borrow my album's and enjoys them
