I am tired of "My branch was harder bullshit." I am a former US Army Soldier 18B;Special Forces Weapon Sergeant Went in as a 31B Initially. Their training is what it needs to be for what they are. The USCG saves more lives yearly than any other branch. They are 100% about preservation of life. Where as I spent time in a fucking sand box in some far away country fighting for....what? They were diving into ice cold water in the middle of the night, to rescue American citizens. If you ask me, they did MORE for the people of this nation than almost any Soldier, Marine, Sailor, or Airman I ever served by. Every single branch is there for a reason. Have respect that they signed the paper. We all signed the same damn papers, understanding the risks that came with them. ALSO the USCG is the HARDEST branch to get accepted into! Just thought I would throw that out there!
If you are getting ready to go to Coast Guard boot camp you had better prepare yourself mentally and physically. For starters, I suggest getting yourself to a level where you can run (not jog) at least 3 miles and do 100 pushups without stopping. Prepare to have someone screaming in your face constantly. I went to Cape May boot camp in 1974 when the basic training was 13 weeks long and the Coast Guard had a competition with the Marine Corps to have the toughest boot camp. Don't kid yourselves. Unless things have changed dramatically in the USCG they are going to be on your ass and kicking your ass every second you are at Cape May. If you were a slob or acted crazy when I was there you'd be on your way to a living hell in the dreaded Red Belts (now called Performance Enhancement Platoon - PEP) so fast your head would spin. I once saw a guy in Red Belts who had a badly swollen leg who was forced to keep running with his full sea bag until his leg broke as he was running up the steps to enter the mess hall and his Company Commander went over and poured himself a cup of coffee as the recruit lay on the floor of the chow hall screaming in pain. The Company Commander then told the staff in the chow hall NOT to call the ambulance because the recruit wasn't going anywhere until the Company Commander had finished his coffee, which he did sit down and drink while the kid lay on the floor screaming with a broken leg. Some Company Commanders are great people and some are assholes who like to abuse their positions of authority like the Drill Instructor in the series: Band of Brothers. A big man in boot camp and an asshole that nobody respects in the field. Come prepared for the toughest eight weeks of your life at Cape May. They run a tight ship and they don't tolerate any bullshit. And YES, it will be worth it in the long run. A few weeks of pain for a lifetime of honor and pride.
@butchMB09 Learning how to wait and read your helmsman lol. I honestly don't remember too much, but the majority of it was definitely spent waiting and sitting as tall and straight and quietly and staying awake as possible.
@obie309 Being in the Coast Guard myself, I have dealt with this specific thing you just mentioned a couple times. It was the hardest thing I have had to deal with my entire life. That is among other things we have to go through, burned people, people run over by boats, floaters that have been in the water a couple weeks. I will never forget that smell, they smell the same every time. Oh whoops I just typed way more than I meant to. That one save, makes it all worth it when you see there faces.
@pinkjapanwolf I suspect it is like any other fear. Constant exposure to build your confidence. Which means do a lot of swimming in deep water. No shame in being scared as long as you control your emotion and learn to overcome your fear. Your fear is rational, in that you could drown, but through training you can control that fear. Good luck.
@jaymsthemajestic: It all comes down to what your main job would be. As a BM, your main job would be serving as a coxswain so to speak and as an ME, your main job would be law enforcement. They didn't have ME when I was in. I wish they did.
@obie309 I do that in my civilian job. It is not a fun task and I don't take pride in doing that. If that is a reason for you wanting to join the Coast Guard, then you have some MAJOR issues.
I got a cross tattoo is less than 1/4 inch width but is kinda long down 1/8 will i qualify and i got a tattoo on the forearm but doesnt reach the wrist bone like by 2 inches will i quaify?
@SFTBLLLVR3 Join the Navy! Hooya! It has been the BEST decision that I have ever made. I love every minute of it and I DON'T regret anything. The Navy is where its at! You ultimatly have to do whats best for you. I had some friends who ultimatly chose Navy over coast guard and they said the main reason is bc the coast guard doesn't guarentee your job. I don't know if thats true or not. Either way your serving the world's greatest nation. I wish you the best of luck on your decision. Hooya!
Of course you would say that. I would rather join the navy. In the coast guard, all you do is drive in a boat and wade of swimmers who swim to far away from the beach. In the navy, you can go around the world and explore.
@Meatre26 Ohhhhh, gotchya. Thats what we did at first, but by the end we had to be able to do a timed 3 mile. Idk what ther requiremnt was for males, but females is 3 miles in under 31 min. What are your requirements for after bootcamp? Do you have a yearly PFT?
I actually feel bad for the ASTs or "rescue swimmers" cause they have to push really hard and PT more on there down time and maintain all the other Standard like passing written test etc. Cause once done with your basic they go to their Advanced training which there PT gets harder. Still love the Coasties. I am retired Army Infantry
AF used to be easy. When I was in CG boot camp 9/72 it was 10 weeks. AF was 6 weeks and they didn't train with pieces or even high port. My son joined the AF 6 years ago (career man.) I heard what he went through. Today, I'd say Navy boot camp is the easiest.
I'm a US Army soldier 11b 4 years in service so far but I'm planning going to coast guard. Does anyone know if they will treat me as prior service? Or I'm gonna be just like everyone else?
Jerry Turner there is a program for prior service and law enforcement it is called DEPOT( Direct Entry Petty Officer Training). It is 18 days long instead of doing 8 weeks but it takes a while to get in. Plus if you get reverted you done with DEPOT and out into the 8 week program. For a prior service people look up to you as a leader but I had many people say this is the 2nd hardest(marine corps #1) boot camp in all military branches. From what I heard from all military branches. I am fresh out of coast guard boot camp I been a E2 for 3 weeks so far let me know if you have any other questions. Unless you are already in Tracen Cape May.
I'm trying to decide between joining the Coast Guard and the Navy. I'm not sure which to do, but I know with the coast guard I have more of a chance to have the career I want
@jaymsthemajestic wouldn't recomend trying to go me, bm is the way to go.... besides the me rate is all locked up right now you cant even get on the list to go to school for it
We didn't have a state of the art track to run on. Boondockers on the grinder. No weight benches or life cycles. High porting, that's how we built ourselves up. I'm not saying it's easy. Just changed. And probably for the better. The Coast Guard is still the best of the five Armed Forces.
@SFTBLLLVR3 research and find a job that you really want after that work up to it, each branch is going to shit on one another, its what you want its not what everybody else wants.
someone explain to me how swimming is hard? what is the point of a 5ft platform? You jump off then what? Christ, if anyone has ever been to a lake before then I guess they pass? Enlighten me

Andrew Jones Can you not post it on every video?
I'm prior service Army, and I give mad props to the Coast Guard you guys are the unsung hero's of the US military.
@SFTBLLLVR3
no question. Coast Guard. You will find more people who haver joined the Navy over the CG and regretted their decision.
"scuba steve had to come save me" lol

I'm having a really tough time deciding between the Coast Guard and the Navy.
Scuba Steve? lol
I research about the military ALL of the time. Ive been waded off the beach by coast guard for swimming to far before..

this is awesomeee like dude i love this... where do i sign up....
do they give u the brick test in basic training....when u have to get a brick from the bottom of the pool
I got a cross tattoo is less than 1/4 inch width but is kinda long down 1/8 will i qualify and i got a tattoo on the forearm but doesnt reach the wrist bone like by 2 inches will i quaify?

if i enlist in the navy i can go in at E-3 because of NJROTC does the coast guard allow this also?
LOL. Been in the CG 13 years, B4 that, 6 in the Navy

im deciding on the cg, navy or airforce, which has the easiest bootcamp, cause i wnna b challenged
maybe not as physically demanding as other services, but how often does an army ranger zip a body bag around someones drowned child?
they lost alot of ppl from physical training??? you can get dropped from basic training???
oo aight
A mile and a half? haha. Coastie boot camp must be so rough.
ok, so i know this may be a dumb question, but how accurate is "The Gaurdian"?

@jaymsthemajestic
@SFTBLLLVR3 research and find a job that you really want after that work up to it, each branch is going to shit on one another, its what you want its not what everybody else wants.
That run is not looking good for me... that swim though. I could definitely crush some people going butterfly in that pool
someone explain to me how swimming is hard? what is the point of a 5ft platform? You jump off then what? Christ, if anyone has ever been to a lake before then I guess they pass? Enlighten me
Those life cycles suuuuck!
