Hi May, I did outdoor swimming last winter. That tingling is so nice, and not feeling cold afterwards. Keep it up, just be aware when it gets really cold it can take the wind out of you. You need a swimming buddy for safety 😊

That route has the advantage of being able to forage fresh fruit along the way. You are doing an amazing job of tweaking the little jobs around the boat. That is such an idyllic spot I can easily understand why it's your favourite mooring.

going back to your gas locker, I presume their is drain? You need this for safety, LPG being heavier than air, its needs somewhere to escape overboard. Its a Boat Safety Scheme Requirement

Spent loads of time in that spot. It is magical. There have been a few free parties start up in the quarry itself a few times, which meant loads of rubbish left in the forrest and surrounding areas. The village above the quarry has an amazing wood fired pizza every week, and they are cheap and tasty.
Yesss!! I know this place... and ive experienced the rubbish too sadly. Just gotta pick it up and crack on!

Hi May, if you can afford it, you won't go wrong with a Stihl MS170 at about £200. The petrol chainsaws they occasionally have in Lidl and Aldi are good value for money at about £80 and have the bonus of a three-year warranty. I made the mistake of buying a pair of chainsaw gloves which had tanned leather on the palm side, rather than suede, which had no grip at all when wet or mucky. They were by Oregon and had the protection in both gloves. They may have changed the design now as I bought them about 5 years ago. I also have a battery pole chainsaw from Lidl which I use most of the the time as it is so convenient with none of the faff of messing with petrol and quieter with no smoke the inhale. It is slower but you can use it as normal chainsaw and has the benefit of putting you further away from the dangerous end and less bending They are seasonal and cost about £90 +£28 for a second battery. Stihl do them too but they are ££££

@@wellbeingonwater The Stihl MS170 is a petrol saw and is good to use and reliable and you can buy one at any time - like I said you won't go wrong with one. If you don't want to spend that much, I'd wait for Lidl or Aldi to have their petrol ones as they are way better than what you can get for £80 elsewhere. An electric pole saw may not suit your needs especially if you have to saw a lot in one go as you're reliant on the battery life. Two batteries gives me about an hour and a half, but that's plenty for me in one go. You can go all day on a gallon pf petrol. I bought it to prune trees but quickly realised that it was much more useful that ,
That GIANT Foam-Monster was the 'treated effluent spillover' that you filmed earlier on your walk to your bathing spot ..... OOPS!!! .... Used to work on building sites back in the day .... My brother used to BREAK the ICE on the water butts through the winter and submerge his arms up to the shoulders for a few minutes before starting work to warm himself UP! .... I was a WIMP and left it to HIM 😂😂

Well... Obviously yoga has been very good for you, LOL! I don't know how good the cold swimming is for *your* cardio, but you had *my* heart beating faster there for a moment. :) As for the chainsaw, there's a cordless drill-sized model that would be good for small, 8-diameter or smaller logs & branches. It comes with two chains, grippy gloves, safety glasses, the tools to tighten the chain when it gets hot and stretches, two battery packs & a charger. The couple on the Boat Time channel have one. They loved it. I looked online and got one here in the US for my wife to use when she is wanting to trim little Water Oaks and Sweetgum saplings out of our hedgerow. I've used it to trim low-hanging branches that used to be in my way when I mow the yard. It will saw through a branch the size of your wrist like a hot knife through butter. It cost me $85US+shipping here.

Haha! Nice! I went for a swim in the sea on New Year’s Day a couple of years ago in Plymouth. Certainly got me attention! I always say, make sure you’re warm when you get in and get covered up and dry afterwards - have something warm to put on. Like you, I also felt warmer afterwards and with cold feet and a tingly body 😀

If you don't want a chain saw, a bow saw with fresh blades is quite efficient. Especially a big one. You might even save time using that instead if you're not using it for bigger trunks. With training of course, and remembering not to use force, let the saw do the work as much as possible.

Just a suggestion- a different option in place of a chainsaw, it to obtain a cordless Sabre saw. Given that you do sometimes do some d.i.y., a Sabre saw allows you to do some woodwork and cut firewood. (Just change the blades).

One thing I miss is a good cold shower at least once a week. Unfortunately, in Florida, my well water sits in an aeration tank in the sun, so the best I get is warm showers.

I would love to go back to cold water swiming, but I have stage 3 small cell lung cancer and my consultent has more or less banned me, not good for me, or my condition. I was told I had until the end of May next year the chemo may have increased that time limit by a few months.

Doctors are amazing and are much more equipped in knowledge and with practice and study of your own body I believe you can know just as much, if not more! Sending hugs

Just a bow saw and an axe would do you grand. That’s what I use I’m always in the Forrest doing bushcraft. Chainsaw would be spot on too but a bow saw and an axe there’s nothing you can’t do with them. Also learn how to baton split logs with a knife for your kindling and you’ll be laughing 👍🏻
More cold water 😜I used to sit in a sauna during the winter. We would get as hot as we could stand, then jump outside into a snow bank. Would science say this is similar to your cold river. All I know is that I slept well afterward.

look up high quality wood saws like silky saws. they are quite efficient, quiet too! saves having to mix 2stroke and keeping bar oil. and nothing worse than dibbing the chainsaw in to soil or a stone. the chain is instantly dulled. either way. its good to learn how to sharpen your own blades/chains. saves money and time. oh, if you get bar oil for a chainsaw be careful with the biodegradeable stuff as it dries out and blocks up the oiling system on the saw when its left laying for a few months

Hope you are alright after that storm. How did you cope? Good video. I used to go to the woodland behind my house and collect wood for my wood burner. Rule was you could have what had fallen, but you were not allowed to cut any trees down. Now i moved and miss the wood trips. 😊

You mention a chain saw but have you considered a safer Rip saw. It certainly would manage the side of wood that you need, they’re safer and easy to control and run on a chargeable battery. Much safer too when working on your own and you wouldn’t need all the expensive protective clothing.

Think seriously about chainsaws. You really need a proper course that will cost you about £1000, take a week & then there is the safety gear. Plus storing the saw & more particularly petrol on board.
A very viable alternative is a good Silky or Silkys (arguably the best Japanese pruning saws, the Gomtaro is probably the cheapest useful one, but a Big Boy is worth thinking about). Real Silkys are very effective. I am a qualified tree surgeon, but carry Silkys on my boat, not chainsaws. With some effort, they will handle anything you want to tackle - cheaper, safer, silent, minimal maintenance, good exercise, etc, etc. Do wear a good glove on your non saw hand though!
Also, though ash will burn wet, that does not mean you should, it is lower moisture, but not dry, so won't burn well, will soot up, tar up & fill with creosote your Aga and stove. Worth drying first.
Similarly wood on the ground. The best by far is standing dead wood or dead wood still on the tree. Both will be burnable dry.

Ha ha! we all know what the best part of the foam monster is, so be very careful! Jumping on slippery branches to break them why not use the two together trees in front of you to snap it between? put it between and pull save twisting your ankle. If your ever Torquay way on Boxing day you can join the rest for their annual sea dip and the morning, go in normal swimsuits and come out blue, pure punishment. If your bow floor is above the waterline or an outlet can be made above the waterline, get the welder out, 4 holes throw both skins, two bits of pipe running through both holes each side, (or one through one side whichever), three hours of prep and welding inside and out, sorted. Winter is a coming so get stocked and stay warm.
Nice advice. I quite enjoy fighting with sticks! Sadly the bow is below the waterline otherwise I'm sure it would drain much easier

Hi, Hope your safety moored away from the Fooding that’s happening around the country at the moment. Our local canal Tow path is under 1ft of water . With a Narrowboat moored up to it (I don’t think there is anyone at home ) . Are there any regulations about gathering Fire wood ? You do hear ridiculous stories about someone’s Dog carrying a stick back to the Car ,and the own being fined for removing it from the Wood .
All is well here re. Flooding! Thankfully. There are rules and regs for everything these days. I always get permission from landowners and/or give my time in exchange for a bit of wood

To be honest, you would probably better of with a good quality folding bow saw, rather than a chainsaw. Chainsaws are inherently dangerous and should never be used by anyone who is alone. Especially when you are somewhere you cant be easily reached by emergency services. Even professional tree surgeons get injured from time to time.
The foam monster is run off from the crop sprays.
