- What a NIGHTMARE!
in this one we have one of the worst things to ever happens on the farm!
The PD results are in and it's not good news. Despite throwing the book at the cows this year, our second calves have really let the side down once more. Where do we go from here? I really don't know.
Could this mean some major changes to our farm?
I hope you enjoy it.

Every farmer watching this has had those weeks where you questioning "Am i really a bad farmer?" Just to say we've all been there!!
surprised you didn't see some of those empty cows bulling
I had same issue about 7 yrs ago and its devastating, took years to recover and that was the day I changed to Stabilisers.
Age thing suggests issues from the drought in 22 and low grass quality this year despite good growth?
I've some Stabiliser heifers available if you are interested in making a bigger jump over to them. I ran the new bull with 46 which is too many really ut he got 45 in calf the other was a heifer that probably isn't right which happens.
I appreciate that you show the good and the bad. Farming is hard work. And romanizing it doesn't do anyone any favors.
Keep your chin up James. Everyone has good weeks and bad. Hopefully things pick up soon for you. Merry Christmas to you and all your family.
Try to think of the positives James, yòu could always fatten the emptys and replace them with incalf heifers. Just the way I do it the odd time. Good luck with whatever you do.
Hi James, definitely not a crap farm. It's so hard with so many variables out of your control. Your doing job
Well. Been there done that with those females not in calf. I had early embryo loss in mine this year. Hot weather in June led to heat stress , cattle need shelter from both rain and sun. Then with the wet weather in July and August grass had lo energy. Either move them to autumn calving if they are any good. There's way round these minor problems. So as we say here in Ireland once your problems are out side the front door it'll be grand.
Could you purchase some more stabiliser heifers and buy in some dairy calf to beef while you build up numbers.
I had a similar problem which was cured by mineral bolusing. Could be copper deficiency which is not easily determined from a blood test as there could be adequate copper but locked up by other minerals such as manganese.
I’d suggest you buy BBX calves direct from a good dairy farm. You’d have to buy the milk powder and calf nuts but probably no more than the cost of keeping g a suckler but with the added benefit of avoiding this type of heartbreak.
Blood test see what’s up. Personally I would just put the bull in with them now, and by turnout (March/April) you can pd them to see if they’re in calf. Cull out what’s not, turn out to grass what is. Yes they won’t be rearing a calf over summer and you’ll be calving slightly early with that one group but it’s a better way than just culling the entire lot now or waiting until may to put the bull in.
How is the back gate in the crush engineered?
Keep your chin up matey....we all know that you and your dad are great farmers......my advice would be to investigate, identify the problem...then fix it......truth is I know you will do that anyway....because that is what professionals do!!!!
happy xmas to you and your entire family!!!!
Hi james , first time watching.scaned 6o lim x sim today.i had 3 ementy. Nothing wrong with them. They never were bulling dont know whats wrong. All ran with powerfull char bull. Suckling is waste of time over here. Its to expensive to keep cow.maybe u guys have bigger scale and cheaper inputs.anyway good luck.
Hi James good for showing the bad weeks as well as the good thanks again
Im sure you will get to the bottom of it james, iv heard people sayin some of the early lambing ewes have scanned badly, they were in lamb but the lamb had been absorbed, at least us farmers have bad memories and seem to forget the bad years, will you sell the cows or maybe put them back to the bull now, we used to have more luck with autumn calving than spring in the past
Pity about the scanning results same happened to me the last year i had cows plus i got them benchmarked which was also depressing so off to market they went so i just buy weanlings and keep them through to beef and a few ewes too alot handier as i work full time
You'll figure it out, I have confidence.
We had fertility problems last year after the ewes got into red clover, we were told that issues with it were an old wives tale but were suspicious ,I was talking to another farmer recently who has a lot of red clover on the farm and is also having fertility issues .It might be worth looking into and may be a case of providing extra minerals ,maybe iodine to combat the problem ,good luck !
nice video, not always are good days, keep going James
Understand your frustration had a group of red angus 2 years no calf checked everything and it came to genetics but it was a a small group of 25 but its upsetting when they was some high dollar cattle
Why was it genetics ?
Is it some kind of inbreeding ?
@@markocarroll9424 apparently the sell they came from the rancher wasn't around and we had another group from the same people and they was awesome cows turns out this group the bulls was either sire
Absolutely gutted for you all. You’re definitely not crap farmers. Don’t ever think that bud. Keep your head up.
Your not a crap farmer James, 👍 there's alot who i know of unfortunately.🤔👍
People would say theres no money in suckler cows fatten not in calf stuff and tern over more srores as they can be handy money at some times of year when folk are full up
Were the cows coming bulling do you know?
Anything to do with the herbal lays?
Sounds like a mineral deficiency at Thornton, chap.
Just paused it feel for you there
Be interesting if you find the answer
We had bad run last year and culled more than I wanted to for being empty
This year only had 1 empty cow
But the heifers calving now are doing a crap job
We calf still outside and a lot of heifers from one origin are shockingly bad
Best of luck I’ll watch the rest now
By the way only real farm I follow on UA-cam so chin up it’s farming for you
The weather in ireland this year had a negative impact on fertility.
Not sure why yours worked out the way they did
How do you not see the heifers coming into heat and getting bullied ? If they’re 14 months old then you should see it. Moving forward. Have 1 bull to 20 cows and always run 3 bulls with anything over 30 cows. Why ? Because the bulls will fight with each other when a cow comes into heat. While 2 bulls fight against each other then the third one takes care of business 😂
Talk to Charlotte and Roy. They had fertility issues with their herd. I think it was iodine deficiencies
Everybody has crap weeks now and then. Always a gamble buying stock never know if you get good ones
What was the PD result from artificial insemination?
