    You will miss the corn and straw and rotating the cereals with grass ,also putting more eggs in the one basket but it will take away some work and hassle.

    Here in Nova Scotia, we went the opposite way. Because buying grain and straw just got to expensive. When I started farming here ,that was the government advice to do.. But when over the years it got frustrating to get straw
    So we have started growing it,the weather was hell last year but still worth. I hope your government payments while pay for you to pay for buying everything. Ps we do not get these government grants like you great.

    I think I predicted this about a year ago, only need the BIG cattle shed building now, I’m sure there will be plenty arable around you that will do muck for straw and also for you to buy barley ❤

    this will be interesting because i am going to plant 12 acres into a SFI lay , have taken a cut of silage when its greened up will spray it off then plough and leave it for as long as I can and perhaps cultivate to help eliminate wireworm /leatherjacket , to plant a clover /grass lay , love to see what you are planting , i know straw looks like it will be a issue this year we are going to bale up some rough grass and make some hay to use for bedding to help with the problem

    Good luck hope straw and corn prices don't rise too much we thought about it a few years ago but still growing corn still works out cheaper than buying in .

    Great video James. Love what you did with the drill. Great idea by your dad. This is huge news and one I saw coming and think is a smart move for your farm. Keep up the great work buddy!

    Only you know what’s right for you! Might be worth hanging onto the gear though just in case ye change track in a few years. Ye have lovely fresh arable gear, won’t do any harm to maybe hang onto it for a little while!

    U not worried about having to buy all the straw in? Straw always seems to be expensive now with the weather being so bad and having an effect on the crops.

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  Місяць тому

      Not really no. We buy the vast majority of our straw in anyway and I’ve got a plan to start and our winter a little bit which will help reduce risk.

    I've watched you videos for awhile now and you make alot of round bales with a change in your farming policy of going all grass wouldn't it make sense just to make clamp silage

  • @richardmatthews3304

    Id stick with a bit of arable james mixed farming is the way forward i think, we cant do a lot of arable but the bit we do saves a lot of straw and feed buying

    Where will you get your straw from? As straw is ridiculous expensive at the moment and will be short this year ?

  • @theDavitos
    @theDavitos Місяць тому

    ohh brother... just buy new aftermarket plastic pipe as i am sure it time for that soon or swap out the shorter one with one of other that is longer. :D

    are you going to slowly get rid of the crosses ?
    does it change what tractors you will have?

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  Місяць тому +2

      Yeh the cross will just be culled out as they get old or don’t get in calf etc.
      Tractor wise there will be a big change. We will go from 3 to 2. As they are replaced moving forward we will have a high powered 4 cylinder tractor (150hp) with a loader as the main tractor for mowing, carting bales etc and a physically smaller tractor (120hp) for yard work, bale shredder, bale wrapper, rake etc.

    Why not just take all the pressure of the coulters or even the springs?

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  Місяць тому

      Usually do if just drilling grass seeds, but it still put the small clover and herb seeds too deep. So took the pipes off the coulters and got on well and though we should make something more permanent 👍

      Tbh, I think next time I’ll just buy what’s cheapest. 😂 McCormick is on the doorstep and JD is a few miles away (won’t have another though) everything else is a fair trek but will give them all a chance.

    You've completely wasted your time with your combi drill, all you needed to do was screw the little top links up on the drill to lift all the cultours up. They will spread the seed if they are out of the ground. I've done 1000's of acres like that contracting, just fine
