    I want to thank you so much for this video. I have a 1981 rca top loader that was playing perfect and suddenly the picture was completely gone. I figured something electronic blew out. Then I came across this video and thought what the heck, I'll try it. Honestly thinking it wasn't gonna be the problem since it was playing clearly, bit I did what you said with the paper and IT WORKS!! THANKS SO MUCH. I love the vcr a d really wanted it too work!

    The problem with newer vcr's of the day was the blanking of the picture if the r.f from the video heads was too low or missing. (very dirty or broken videoheads).
    A black screen gave no clue to the problem.
    Some hitachi vcr's showed a blue screen instead, pretty but still didnt help.
    Old machines didnt blank the screen so you could seen the picture mess.

    I have an old Accurian, which I had cleaned. It will play tapes I recorded myself with no problems at all. But tapes that were purchased new, it will play the audio perfectly, but no picture. What may be the problem? Thanks.

      It sounds like the tape is not riding in the right spot to work for both cassettes. You could try to adjust the tape guides to raise or lower the tape as it runs through the machine. These should be the ones that sit next to the drum head when a tape is playing. Adjust both of them the same amount of turns as you try to find the picture. Remember where you started so you can return them if it does not work. Good luck.

    I have this VCR. It was my family VCR when I was a kid and it is in similar condition. I cleaned the areas that you circled and got it up and running. It plays well enough but I'm hearing a grinding noise when I stop a tape. Any idea what that could be? Also, I'm curious where I could get belt replacements like you mention in the video.

    • @ElectronicsEditor

      Does it make the noise on one tape or any tape that you put in the machine? Maybe the mode switch needs to be cleaned, or the belt is not putting the moving parts all the way where they need to be. For a belt, you'd have to just search the internet for a match. It's a tedious job to find one because you have to know all the measurements of the belt. You can try to boil the one you have to make it last longer. That's a temp workaround that I've done and it worked for a long time. Don't buy the variety pack of belts you see online, they are all too small.

      @@ElectronicsEditor Hey, thanks for the reply. It makes the noise with any tape that is stopped. I appreciate the suggestions.

    I have an old Sony VCR SVL-ED333SG and I just removed it after like years to see some tapes. First day it worked pretty fine, audio and video was perfect. The next day I put in the tape, the audio is there but no video but like it's not showing any black screen at all like the video is there but it's the black and white pixels dancing and a little bit of video is clear which is jumping up and down. I tried cleaning the video head with a cotton swab drenched with a little alcohol. But its the same results - no video. Any suggestions?

    • @ElectronicsEditor

      Never ever ever clean the heads with a cotton swab! Hopefully, you did not break the tiny heads on the drum. The swabs fibers catch on the sharp edges of the heads and then the heads crack or even break off. I don't know if the VCR has belts in it or gears, but maybe the main belt is slipping and needs to be replaced. It still sounds like the heads are dirty to me. Clean all the surfaces that the tape touches when it moves, with a cotton swab or wipes(and alcohol), but not the main drum. Use a piece of paper soaked with alcohol and rotate the drum by hand. You should see the dirt come off the drum. I hope this works for you.

      @@ElectronicsEditor Update: so I found out that theres a roller with a sponge that cleans the head. The VCR is really old and it was sat in a wardrobe inside a box that the sponge got all mushy and it was totally worn out. That roller actually messed up the heads. I removed that whole sponge from the roller and now theres nothing on it. The tapes works perfectly fine with full audio and video. I even cleaned the surfaces that the tape touched as you said. Thx

    I have a Sharp VC-MH741 that played a couple of tapes just fine but all of a sudden gives me just 1 second of sound when I start the playback and the screen is completely black except for some small white interference. Do you have any idea of what may be going on or how to fix it? Thank you!

    • @ElectronicsEditor
      @ElectronicsEditor  4 роки тому

      I'd have to say make sure all the parts that touch the tape are clean first and see how it works after you clean it(make sure the tape is good by opening the door on the tape itself and looking at the tape. It should be perfectly clean, no funny marks or smears on it). If it happens again, and you clean all parts again, see if there is somewhere that the tape is picking up grease or something of the like, on it from when the tape loads. Grab a good magnifier and look closely at the heads on the drum and make sure none are broken or excessively dirty. You may have to remove the board and inspect the solder joints on everything to make sure they are good. One bad solder joint can make things act funny. Good luck.

    Did you know that the pua3228 ic2 in the early/mid 90s panasonic vcrs can fail? The soldier connections can break from it becoming hot.

    • @ElectronicsEditor
      @ElectronicsEditor  4 роки тому

      Not familiar with that particular problem, but I know that a lot of electronics equipment fails because of bad solder joints. These days though, electronics is a throw-away type purchase. It's cheaper to just buy a new one. Sad for us who repair it.

      @@ElectronicsEditor 12voltvids always repaired vcrs, tvs and audio equipment back when he was a shop worker in the 90s and all those panasonics he repaired all had that same fault. It will eventually develop on yours if it does have that ic which it may not.

    Panasonic made great VCRs in the 80s but many of them suffered from power supply issues when caps were drying out...

      From my years of collecting, I seem to have less trouble with Panasonic OEM decks than I do their clones (Magnavox, Sylvania, General Electric, Curtis Mathes, Quasar et al). I wonder if lower grade components go into them despite being made at the same plant. I would love an explanation.

    So a Q-tip wet with 91% of isopropyl alcohol will damage the head?

    • @ElectronicsEditor
      @ElectronicsEditor  4 роки тому

      Never use Q-tips on the heads drum. It will catch on the heads and break them. The paper with alcohol I found works the best. Also, something I've noticed over the years is that too much alcohol to clean anything could and will damage parts, especially small parts like VCR drum heads.
