I actually bought one of these for a dollar at a garage sale years ago. I got a lot of use out of it and it actually made me appreciate mono VCRs. For linear mono, it is not the greatest but it is doable. I found that Japanese recorders from the 1980s had superior linear sound. I particularly like the Sharp mono and the Hitachi Dolby stereo units from the eighties. Very simple repair. I had to check the position of the erase head on mine as it would not play back tapes with sound during a test. I guess not enough tension. Thank you for these great videos.

It's incredible the miniaturization and cost cutting of electronics, that thing was built to a bare minimum!

I just picked up a stereo model much like the one in this video for free today. It works good after a head cleaning.

Great fix for a machine that hasn't been used since Mulroney brought in the GST. Great to see you got the mono monster working.

For the time, these were way better than the Orion mechanism that was sold by the likes of JVC (for instance, the HRA591U). The Orion ones were even worse than Funai. The Orions had an optical mode switch which would take forever to switch between functions. Plus, they had horrible sound and video quality. The hifi was temperamental and the linear audio was fuzzy and had a high pitched ring throughout.

I like that you didn't have to fix it, but it beats it going into landfill and someone might take it off your hands for archiving

I know this video is old as the hills! I have a similar unit (Panasonic PV-V4520) with EXACTLY the same problem - the little felt strip (for back tension) evidently broke & dropped off. Like you, I found it in the bottom of the machine; unfortunatly mine had snapped in two. So unless I can magically find that little bugger, the machine is doomed to recycling, I'm afraid! Anyhow, I'm enjoying your way-back-machine videos!

Even if it is a bit short it will work. Glue the piece back on.

mono vcrs are useful for stationary studio filming. i did this back in the day. when i had a vhs-c camcorder that i can move around easy and i wanted to record in SP for best picture and sound. then until i found a way to record in stereo with a hi-fi vcr with 2 mics ... fun times.

Yep, I think that particular unit was a 2005 or at least around that area looking at the date on the motor assembly as you were disassembling the unit.

Thank you for your rare advice on how to fix a vcr with no play back.
i'm having the same problem (my brand is also PANASONIC) except the picture goes to black in play back also it makes an unhealthy whirring uneven sound in play mode.
I know vcrs are a thing of the past BUT I have many tapes not available on DVD or streaming formats, & so i need to fix it, when i fast forward on screen there's very little picture also, and its sometimes winding slowly forward & back

I have a problem with my vcr, it plays for a couple seconds, then the screen goes black, and the sound shuts off, but its still playing. If i just leave it black, the tape pops out on me, but i can pause the tape, doing that turns everything back on, but when i play it, it only plays for a few seconds and it does it again, and just keeps doing it. And it only seems to happen sometimes, is that fixable?

I had a Panasonic that looked like that years ago, don't know what the model number was on it though. It always worked like a champ, sad to finally see it go, DVD killed the VHS show they say.

I couldn’t get my Panasonic to display, I featured it in one of my videos, it ate 2 tapes and played for a second, so I just kept running a cleaning tape through it until it worked but then the cleaning tape got jammed

Yep quite a cheap design, but good enough to do the job :-D.
I was expecting the traditional plastic band/pad wrap around, but no.
The final vcrs were £30 to buy, almost nothing, mad aint it?.
Looks like Sir Clive Sinclair has passed away, his basic computers got a lot of people into using computers, and many more inventions r.i.p.

@@12voltvids this chassis looks familiar to the 1997-1999 chassis made in japan. I REALLY liked those Panasonics as well as the mid- early 90's genetation with the broken ic2 connection which i never had and the front loading cog skipping the teeth causing the tape not to load or eject itself.

You can use a spray to clean the switch mode without opening the switch mode

    • @sunspot42
      @sunspot42 2 роки тому

You can, but it gets cleaner and you can inspect the little pins if you open it up. You also don't risk spray or drips getting on components you don't want it on.
