JOHN ARCH Explains Ageless Voice: "I Don't Smoke, I Rarely Drink, I Don't Do Drugs"

- JOHN ARCH, the unmistakable voice of the first three Fates Warning records, left the music industry in 1987 after just four years of the touring cycle. It would be over seventeen years before Arch would enter the recording studio again. Though he did appear with his former band-mates during a 1994 Fates Warning concert, and though he did audition for some band called Dream Theater (a guy named Kevin James got the job), it wasn't quite enough to sate his creative appetite.
John Arch needed to do something special. Now living part-time in the music world, Arch and his old buddy Jim just dropped the second Arch/ Matheos album, titled "Winter Ethereal"
In this first installment of a herculean two-part conversation with Sonic Perspectives resident metal dude Gonzalo Pozo, Sir John Arch spills the beans on his longtime friendship with Mike Portnoy, his wry observations of contemporary doomsday cults, and why composing with Jim Matheos is like a certain dysfunctional bicameral legislative body headquartered near the Potomac River.

John Arch was the whole reason I started singing. I was blown away with how different his style was/is. He always went against the rules & had no boundaries. I studied his style for years & it totally opened up the doors for a wild & krazy journey. The interview was great. Singing over top of loud ass guitars & drums is the only way to really develop raw power. Amazing. I'm so pumped up from the 2016 concert in Germany & the interview to boot. Makes me want to dust off the pipes. Thank You so much John, for everything 🤘❤❤
John Arch is one of my Favorite Metal Singers! Love his work.
I think he is good shape because he didn't tour so much. Touring wears down a lot of voices
A real treat to hear John speak. Poetic, articulate, humble gentleman. The most original singer I've ever heard.
Indeed. He’s one of a kind. Absolute legend.
John Arch is my second favorite singer and has been since I first heard Awaken The Guardian when it first came out and I bought it. Still, to this day, it's the most brilliant album I ever heard, and not only for the awesome vocals, musicianship and song writing, but for the brilliant vocal harmonies and lyrics. When I listen to that album, it takes me away to those places he talks about in the songs. And, I still listen to it once or twice a week.
It's awesome to see him singing again. I remember when he quit Fates Warning and said he was retiring from the music business to do cabinet work, I was disappointed and thought we'd never see him again.
One thing, though, is I remember when Ray Alder first joined the band, he harshly criticized John in an interview I read with him. I really couldn't get into Fates Warning after that, especially without John Arch.
Hey, great interview!
Same bro!! I still listen at least once every few months. I used to have a boom box with a bass speaker in the middle, and I would just sit down by a lake and blast it in my face, losing myself in the world Arch was weaving.
@@PastorShayne That's an awesome way to put it, losing yourself in that world he created.
Ageless voice? His voice is definitely aging...like a fine wine.
Wow, the man is a legend...So to think that this long after the break through, he is mastering things, how cool is that? Thank you John, I salute you, all class and respect for you always!!!
Thanks for getting him on the phone awesome interview! Thanks John for doing it!
so glad i grew up in CT with at the same time they came out. luckly enough to see arch matheos and awg
Great interview! I'm glad religion came up. Been listening to Arch FW since HS in the mid 90s and was always curious about what was up with his myriad uses of Christian imagery.
Great interview! The new album is amazing. John's a top-notch guy as well. Looking forward to the second part.
He didn’t record any albums our tour for decades. I would hope he’d be able to hang onto his voice 🤷🏻♂️

John is my hero !!!
What's the name of the song at the beginning? It's killer
I think that if John would have joined DT, DT would still be underground. Its a very personal opinion, but I think that John's voice and writing are too good and "odd" for mainstream.
Or it could be even cooler than it is right now! We’ll never know but also it isn’t so important anymore f dt
@@dreamtheaterpanterathey’d likely be my fav band of all time had Arch won that gig.
Saw Fates Warning in 1984, in Union City, NJ. Little rinky dink place called "Liceo Cubano"
I was stunned at this dudes vocals, from the get go. We had a few beers together, after the show, too. Attacker was another band there, too. And a band called Stryker, who turned into Gothic Slam. Old School Metal. Best times ever.
