As an artist, I use countless tools to create art. I won't get this. I refuse to pay for a digital item for a month or two when I'm not using it! Thanks for Nomad Sculpt; it is my go-to app for iPad.
Can you imagine working on a project for a client and then every year that client asks you to make major changes to that project and expects you to do based on what they originally paid you ? Just how long can you go on doing that. Their original plan under Pixologic was done in the 1990s and early 2000s because they wanted to grow their user base. They and blender created the idea that software should not be a service. It used to be you bought seats or licenses and then upgraded each year for half off. The choice was yours and a gamble for them. Now it’s far better, we pay them they make it better and if they don’t we leave and go elsewhere. The fact you have a free version means you have access to your data Nomad is a fun tool, buts not zbrush.

I understand your frustration. The free version doesn’t allow exporting. STL is an old outdated format anyway, I don’t know why people still use it. Most slicers will accept any standard 3d file formats.

I have always wanted to try and learn zBrush because I want to do professional stuff, but what was holding me back was the price. Seeing that the iPad version is cheaper in price seems like a great deal to me. I'm very tempted but I think I'd first have to focus on making 3D art more frequently and learning how to balance between making 2D and 3D art and just keep practicing and creating in Nomad. I can always install and try the free version of ZBrush iPad to get a taste of it 🤷🏻♀️
Just installed it yesterday, works amazing on my new iPad. Strange thing is that all of a sudden a blurry desktop left toolbar with the brushes and strokes icons appeared underneath the iPad toolbar. When I then searched the prefs for some setting I might have accidentally switched that caused this, the App crashed, weird… Smells like they build this on top of the old desktop UI somehow ?

Since ZBrush doesn't have the real-time renderer effects that Nomad does, it shouldn't drain your battery as fast. When using Nomad I always love having the real-time render effects on so I get a more accurate representation of my sculpt and I've noticed that my iPad gets reeeeeal hot and the battery drains fast when doing so. Initial looks of ZBiP look promising. Biggest downside, no ZModeler that’s shocking as ZModeler is rich with lightweight power. Looks to be a business decision to force commitment to use of full ZBrush
@@SouthernGFXthe developers said in an interview that there were too many technical challenges to implement Zmodeler in the 1.0 version, but they are working on the challenges bringing it to the iPad. I’ll post the link to the interview in a follow on comment, it’s a really interesting in depth look at the development philosophy.
Just in case links aren’t allowed at all, here is what the developer said about all the major missing features: to be there in 1.0 are SpotLight, ZModeler, sculpting layers, and Surface Noise. Those are the four main features that aren't there. There are also some rendering features that didn't make it, like BPR Filters, and obviously, Redshift is not available on the iPad, but the aforementioned four are probably the main ones that people will miss. Our plan going forward is to understand what exactly needs to be done to get them implemented on the iPad. For example, with ZModeler, you can't take what we've done on the desktop and put it on the iPad - the tablet is not big enough for the UI. Also, not all iPads have hover states; only M2s and up have that hover state ability, and ZModeler is completely driven by hover state. So there will need to be some changes in ZModeler to put it on the iPad. The same goes for Surface Noise, SpotLight, and sculpting layers - their UI needs to be carefully evaluated and reviewed. That's part of the reason why some of these features aren't making it. We want to make sure we take the time to implement these features correctly because they will require some design and under-the-hood changes to work on the iPad, but we are looking to get them working. I can tell you one feature that is not going to make it ever is the See-Through Mode - you just can't do that on the iPad. The tablet itself doesn't allow it, so there's no way for us to implement that feature.
Personally ZBrush for iPad is definitely a game changer, I've heard that they plan on adding an additional 200 brushes at some point (only for the paid subscription users). I will stick predominantly with nomad as I prefer certain standard brushes especially the tube tool as opposed to the ZBrush variants. I also don't like certain choices in ZBrush for iPad like having to hold down the option key to cause an inversion style of the brush i.e. adding / subtracting clay, being able to toggle it off and on with tapping the option button just feels more efficient rather than a hand covering part of the sculpt. Also not a fan of how panning around the canvas isn't as controlled like nomad where you can have it as trackball or turntable, as majority of the time I prefer sculpting with the turntable manuverability and occasionally switching to trackball to get to awkward sculpting angles. Personally I think I'll do 80-90% of the work in nomad and use ZBrush to get those higher levels of details or even clothing. Here's hoping they'll add a posing / rigging function in ZBrush for iPad 😅
Hi, Glenn! I tried to upload more than 1 matcap to the Ipad Zbrush, but I don't know why, it keeps replacing the last one instead of adding multiple. Is this an error or a normal thing? Thank you!
I downloaded the free version yesterday, its allot easier than Zbrush for desktop that I never quite got the hang of but not as intuitive as Nomad. My question is if I'm primarily sculpting characters and creatures for myself or my business is it worth the subscription? What tools does Zbrush have that would make it worth switching, I primarily use nomad to make portraits and toys for 3d printing? Are you going to be releasing a new course soon?
I can see the live booleans being useful for 3D printable models. It would make adjustments easier. Also Nomad doesn’t yet have an actual rigging system with IK to pose models. It’s labor intensive to set up the hierarchy of objects in Nomad. So Zspheres seem better. Also Zbrush has dynamics for sculpting cloth, which Nomad doesn’t. You’ll have to subscribe to export your models, the free version of ZB for iPad won’t let you export.
Personally, getting to use all my desktop zbrush brushes on the iPad version is great. The sculpting experience has crossed over well too and is less convoluted that the desktop version. To be honest, there are things it does that are better for pure sculpting over Nomad, but Nomad trumps it on others, such as being able to access the heirarchy quickly and obviously the rendering output. I’d struggle to say which one is my favourite, though hopefully the competition between the two will lead to a better user experience being made on both

Really sad about the subscription model.. id rather have the option of a higher initial buy in than renting a program. Maybe im just getting old. Zbrush has always been a high buy in with long term support. Buy once cry once. Very thankful for the amazing value we get from nomad
Which iPad do you have? I'm not seeing any lag to speak of until I start getting into the super high polygon count. But I am on a 1TB M4 iPad Pro, so it could be I'm not seeing it with my high spec’d iPad. I still have my 256gb M1 iPad Pro, I'll have to see how it compares.
@@Ferrous_Bueller m1 iPad Pro. Gonna upgrade to the m4, but Just going between nomad and Zbrush. Zbrush’s navigation feels worse unfortunately. Hopefully they iron that out
@@ronaldbell7429 I didn’t watch the whole thing, I listened to it while driving. But regardless, I didn’t say it had no lag, I said I’m not seeing lag on my 1TB M4 iPad Pro. I’ve got about 12 hours on it so far and haven’t seen it on my iPad, emphasis on mine. I just loaded a model up just to double check, and I pushed it to 50,000,000 and had a tiny bit of model rotation lag, and zero brush lag. I took the same model and pushed it exactly the same in Nomad Sculpt, and at 25,000,000 Nomad Sculpt has an extreme amount of model rotation lag and unusable (for me) amount of brush lag.
Yeah I'm not switching to a no real time post processing even if it was for free. But honestly..how hard it is to freaking implement it for a team of people? Stephane did it all by himself!
So you scrolled like a page with capabilities of free version vs full version on ipad, and free version don't seem to have an export feature, what? so you can not use what you have modelled? why then removing other features, if it is only good to try what it can do anyways?
I used zbrush for like 3 years, and still do, but honestly i see no reason why you wouldnt use nomad in the Ipad instead of zbrush, you only have to buy it once, i achieved same levels of models on nomad as i did on zbrush, it is even easier on nomad, at the end you gonna have to export the models to maya or blender anyways
Now, I feel like Maxon bought Zbrush to hold my wallet hostage. This reminds me of college, where you're forced to pay for filler classes/updates that you don't use, nor were you interested in. When a company creates a new tool or update that the art community is excited about, people come willingly to pay for those updates. While holding my wallet hostage, there is no incentive for Maxon to release strong and useful updates monthly or yearly!!!!!!!!!!
Problem I’m having with it. The smooth tool doesn’t work. They should have improved the lighting rigging. The material system is still out of date and needs to be replaced by renderman. It’s a much more powerful and efficient way for material and sub surface scattering with lighting. I just found out about it today so I will complain more later. 😄
Zbrush isn’t like other 3d. Because its heart is 2.5d it only works in 3d when your moving the model, then it drops to the canvas and you only have what you can see, very clever. That’s what you can get insane poly counts on smaller engine machines. Something like that anyway. Question is … does it still work like that? If not, is that going to make it just like every other software? Soooo many of us got out when pix sold out to Max. I’m running on the pre-sub software and quite happy.
I’m also wondering the same thing, where’s the 2.5D? And Pixols? The whole point of the Z in the ZBrush name is the Z-axis. But from what I can see it now seems to be just another 3D modelling app and that’s it.
No zbrush even in drawing 2.5d is still 100% 3D. The 2.5 happens in rendering things which have been dropped to the canvas. It’s 3D but they wrote their own graphical API that makes certain sacrifices to achieve the performance they have.
I'm wondering if it makes any different using a M1 Ipad pro with 16gb of ram compared to a M4 Ipad pro with 16gb of ram. I also wonder if you can export the sculpt to octane render on ipad to do a rendering
@@roofoofighter Something that lets you try out a tool and learn for free shouldn’t be sneered at. They built some limitations into it? Of course. Most people fiddling around with zbrush won’t have needed those features anyway
Like you mentioned, it's a subscription and I'm not supporting that in any way shape or form. I'd rather support Nomad, keep that small company going. Even with the free stripped down version of ZB, I'll stick with Nomad, does everything I need to do and then some.
In my opinion ZBrush is better used on a powerful computer like an i9 with a powerful video card and 64 gigs of RAM FOR rendering the tablet cannot handle this the subscription cost 89.99 annually from Maxon. Moreover the Apple tablet Fully Loaded COST $2,199 total cost $2,288.99. And after all that spending you have to train for 3 years or more to get good. Its just not practical.
The only thing that is tempting me is the dynamics and cloth sculpting tools. If Nomad had that I would be in hog heaven. Otherwise Zbrush doesn’t appear to be worth it for me. The free version is just a crippled demo so it’s no good for anything except to frustrate people into upgrading.
The demo version is probably good for new people to dip their toe in to see what the fuss is about or if it’s for them. The lack of export, some pretty important brushes and some key features means experienced users won’t have much time for the trial version
@@roofoofighterI agree - strange decision that. I haven’t been on the free version for a while but when I was, it didn’t even have the dam standard brush which I thought was a trick missed too, since a proper version of that brush was always needed on its main iPad competitor, Nomad
A lot of people using a brush might not use more than what the free version offers. Use it and see if you’re bumping up against the limitations enough to make it worth paying. The main thing is just to remind people that nomad is awesome. The arrival of zbrush shouldn’t make people forget about that powerhouse
I have used the paid version of Zbrush on Ipad the last couple of days. I love it. I think it is very affordable I wish that the desktop version would also be rewritten to have this modern UI/UX design too. And I hope that the Ipad version will eventually have all the desktop features like for example Zmodeller, and reference image capabilities.
Now they have done this, when the old-timer desktop users (like me) approve.... they should completely re-tool the desktop version to be more in line with this (and have a seamless workflow - like Logic Pro X)... I HATE the desktop experience, even when you are used to it, you are used to a real mess.
I’ll post replies to questions in here in the next few days.

I hope you have enjoyed the video. If you have any questions please leave your comments below as Glen and other beta testers are going to do their best to reply in the next 24 hours and if there is a common theme Glen will look to do a video.
Really sad about the subscription model.. id rather have the option of a higher initial buy in than renting a program. Maybe im just getting old. Zbrush has always been a high buy in with long term support. Buy once cry once.
Very thankful for the amazing value we get from nomad
Does it have Damian Standard Brush in the free version?
Is Zbrush taking advantage of the 16gb on the 1 and 2TB iPad Pro models, or is 8gb enough?
More RAM, more polys....
What suggestions did you make during the beta that got implemented?
I wonder if they will abandon Forger?
Is there file format compatibility between ipad and desktop versions?
Seamless with Goz. Simple click
Yes if you pay the subscription. The free version can’t export.
I hope they improve navigation, it lags pretty bad compared to nomad
Which iPad do you have? I'm not seeing any lag to speak of until I start getting into the super high polygon count. But I am on a 1TB M4 iPad Pro, so it could be I'm not seeing it with my high spec’d iPad. I still have my 256gb M1 iPad Pro, I'll have to see how it compares.
@@Ferrous_Bueller m1 iPad Pro. Gonna upgrade to the m4, but Just going between nomad and Zbrush. Zbrush’s navigation feels worse unfortunately. Hopefully they iron that out
That’s what it looks like in the video for sure
Hi, what's the best ipad to use with this app, and what model is the ipad you're using ?, thanks.
2024 iPad Pro OLED.
is it coming to anroid as well?
Hello,Why my Ipad Zbrush defult model is dark, I do not use Mask, all defult setting, I used Ipad pro M1.Thanmk you so much!
i love using zbrush on the computer i have an i9
Thanks for your content
does it have good low poly tools? that's the worst part of nomad, the lack thereof.
Hi! Can you convert a logo done in procreate to Zbrush?
does it have z modeler?
Yeah I'm not switching to a no real time post processing even if it was for free.
But honestly..how hard it is to freaking implement it for a team of people?
Stephane did it all by himself!
I hear you. I’ve been making that point for a while
Why is it not part of Maxon 1?
So you scrolled like a page with capabilities of free version vs full version on ipad, and free version don't seem to have an export feature, what? so you can not use what you have modelled? why then removing other features, if it is only good to try what it can do anyways?
nomad is capable, but having a zremesher and z modeler brush would be a game changer
nomad has their own version of zremesher too tho
Can i import models from nomad sculpt and rig them here
What about rigging your characters?
I have an iPad Pro gen1 and this needs ios17 which mine won’t go to😡
I used zbrush for like 3 years, and still do, but honestly i see no reason why you wouldnt use nomad in the Ipad instead of zbrush, you only have to buy it once, i achieved same levels of models on nomad as i did on zbrush, it is even easier on nomad, at the end you gonna have to export the models to maya or blender anyways
I will stick with nomad.
I think a huge amount of artists will. Subscription and no realtime are deal breakers for a lot of people
Now, I feel like Maxon bought Zbrush to hold my wallet hostage.
No real time rendering and they want us to pay more than Nomad 😂😂 Nah.
Thanks to Forger, (earlier user, paid once)
I'm wondering if it makes any different using a M1 Ipad pro with 16gb of ram compared to a M4 Ipad pro with 16gb of ram.
I also wonder if you can export the sculpt to octane render on ipad to do a rendering
The free version can not export any kind mesh and it is a huge deal breaker. What is the purpose if can even make a stl file.
to learn the tool
Think of it as an old shareware demo, it’s meant to frustrate the user into upgrading. 💰😜
@@ramsaybolton9151 if it doesn’t have all the features then it’s not much of a learning tool. 😜
@@roofoofighterat least you can try it without paying
5:44 and retention drops to zero!
@@dantorres1844 makes no sense though, even ZB core mini has OBJ export
@@roofoofighterI agree - strange decision that. I haven’t been on the free version for a while but when I was, it didn’t even have the dam standard brush which I thought was a trick missed too, since a proper version of that brush was always needed on its main iPad competitor, Nomad
@@dantorres1844 can you customize brushes in the free version like in Nomad or does that require a subscription?
A lot of people using a brush might not use more than what the free version offers. Use it and see if you’re bumping up against the limitations enough to make it worth paying. The main thing is just to remind people that nomad is awesome. The arrival of zbrush shouldn’t make people forget about that powerhouse
I have used the paid version of Zbrush on Ipad the last couple of days.
I love it.
I think it is very affordable
I wish that the desktop version would also be rewritten to have this modern UI/UX design too.
And I hope that the Ipad version will eventually have all the desktop features like for example Zmodeller, and reference image capabilities.
Nomad need to upgrade Gizmo look like zbrush
I feel like real time preview rendering for a sculpting app is overrated. As for texturing yes you might want it but it’s not something I 100% need.
Now they have done this, when the old-timer desktop users (like me) approve.... they should completely re-tool the desktop version to be more in line with this (and have a seamless workflow - like Logic Pro X)... I HATE the desktop experience, even when you are used to it, you are used to a real mess.
nOMAD wINS
Will not use it.
This tool is focused on business customers and not Hobbiest.
maxon can suk it
No Android love. Guess have to stick with nomad sculpt, without remesher. Android hate sucks.
it's @#$%^&^%$# expensive then
