  • Step by step video showing 12V battery replacement on a BMW 520d F11 model. Both - the replace procedure and software registration are shown in the video, apologies for the sound, as it's not the best due to technical issue that has occurred during production.

Hi there. How did you remove the floor covering the battery? I've undone the screws on the trims near the boot edge but the floor is still securely fixed.

Hi there, in all fairness, on this one it wasn't attached, just sitting in place, there were no screws holding it. We are talking about the lower cover just under the flat false floor under the boot?

Yes, it's the lower cover just under the false floor. I managed to get it off, removed 4 screws from the boot trim (boot edge)and the plastic retainer plug. I 'carefully' levered the lower cover away from the retaining trims. All good now and battery replaced. Thanks for the video, very helpful.

Hi there, loads of options to download, if you look through eBay - you can buy the interface with a CD, or look for auctions that actually give you a download link - I cannot help you more from here, but there are many options - another one is BMW forums.

one question about registration - you have to do it? whats the reason?

You are suppose to register the fact that the battery has been replaced, apparently it will affect the way the battery is being charged by the charging system - which in turn is much more advanced than those of the old days, when we've had a dynamo and a regulator under the seat. It will work without probably, but since BMW tells you to do it, I'd do it as they know more about their cars than I do. Every piece of software or diagnostic machine has got an option to do it, so I think there's got to be a valid reason. Battery capacity deteriorates over time and I think BMW software takes that into account and compensates for it - that's my understanding of the system. Hope this helps.
BTW: You do not need a laptop and ISTA, you can do it with Bluetooth OBD2 dongles and software on a phone or most (even simple) diagnostic devices.

It is indeed, a lot of OEM supply comes from Varta. Expensive though.
