it's funny how every song gets darker the farther we get into RWBY
I personally love it because it deals with the development of loss and a newer, darker perspective once the curtains are pulled back. People who once knew you could trust make you now uncertain- anyone can become the bad guy.
Also rooster teeth intensionaly made RWBY darker and more for older kids so as kids were watching the kids were also growing up

I'm a year late but just wanted to say it also shows how messed up and dark the world of Remnant actually is but it's the Hunters and Huntresses that are the ones preventing that from manifesting. Not saying that's a bad thing though. :)
Yeah, although if you look closely, it's been bubbling under the surface the whole time. Red like Roses II was about Ruby's depression over her mother's death. "Every nightmare just discloses, it's your blood that's red like roses, and no matter what I do, nothing ever takes the place of you"
This genius makes Watts look like a punk in the knowledge department. Watts might be a master hacker, but Merlot does that *casually*, as a side gig. His primary specialty of somehow genetically modifying and controlling literal manifestations of Darkness created by a GOD far outstrips anything Arthur can do.
One could argue that Watts just never got a bigger chance to shine, cause I could see him commanding an army of reverse engineered robots and unmanned Paladins.
But, that still pales in comparison to anything Merlot has done. Him recoding a monster born from one of the fucking deities of his world is as terrifying as it could get.
Watts: has direct access to the Grimm and their mommy. Can't figure out jack about them.
Merlot: has just his Chad intellect. Almost cracks the code.

Reminder that by the time Watts died, RWBY and friends never even knew he existed. At most, they assumed Ironwood had something to do with hacking Penny, but that's about it.
In all fairness, Watts was a Tech genius, Merlot was a Genetic engineering Master, the two are different areas of science buy yes I do agree Watts looks like a simpleton compared to Merlot who looks like a god

It's a good thing that Salem didn't get her hands on Dr.Merlot. He's a genius that can rival, if not outclass, Watts, and if She would've managed to turn him on her side (which, knowing her talent for manipulation and his passion for the Grimm, might have not been so difficult) Remnant would've been doomed in less than a month.

But if Grimm need humans in order to actively be a threat to humanity, then that pretty much defeats the point of them.
Now, if we had a Silver-Eyed Warrior who was WILLINGLY working for Salem/Merlot, and was using their silver eyes to cover themselves in Grimm Liquid and manipulate it, then we'd be onto something...
Despite how generic he was, merlot is one of my favorite villains in rwby. He was the only villain(not counting salem) who was able to genetically alter grim, who, as far as we know, don't have any genetics or cells. I want a whole story with this dude about how he changed grimm

The act of controlling the Grimm for the good is a really cool concept, In my opinion they should have made this Dr. Watts motive, him being in Salem's group could also be explained as his own way of attaining deeper information and knowledge about the Grimm to one day use them against her. They would've created a really good morally gray character.
Kinda like Heisenberg in RE8. Workin' with the big bad but secretly plotting to rebel.
The fact that Ruby is in this art for the song is showing how Salem could turn her into one of the most destructive and smart Grimm in the show if she gets the opportunity

I swear everytime I hear "I've given you life my Lusus Naturae, open your eyes!" every single prominent mad scientist-adjacent character i've known in my life comes to my mind, from Dr. Frankenstrein about to defy nature, through Henry Wu witnessing the first dinosaur born in Jurassic Park, to Shou Tucker in FMAB making an abominaton out of his own daughter. This song evokes undead, abominations, chimeras, cyborgs, crimes, accidents and whatever scientist has believed they could play God behind all of these

Dude, I wouldn't be surprised if it is later revealed that Merlot unearthed the truth about Salem and the Brother Gods during his research and also aimed to destroy the Brothers too. Salem and Merlot would have made for a terrifying combination.

The Hound needs to be an excuse to use this song in the actual show. Not very likely that they’ll use a V4 song in V8 though :/ besides, there are some parts of this that clearly reference the fact Merlot is a scientist. I guess you could apply it to Watts as he’s the closest thing to an “evil scientist” we have in the show, but then it doesn’t really make sense, because it’s safe to assume that Salem created the Hound. Point is, it would be cool to hear this in the show, as a lot of people aren’t going to hear it if it’s just in the relatively obscure game, but unfortunately it’s not very likely that will happen.
I may fall is a vol 1 song they used in full in vol 3. I can see this and especially sacrifice appearing In show proper later...

I managed to finish the game this year; Merlot makes a Good Villain in my opinion and Grim Eclipse was a Very Good Game. (I can't say the same about the Actual Show Anymore)

Salem once was the scary Wicked Witch of the West, now she's just a "Poor little thing, the princess lost the prince." Doctor Merlot scares and disgusts me out of the skin, I can't wait for what Red Sun Over Beacon will do with him!!
If you pay attention to the words, Merlot's plan at its core is pretty noble, use the Grimm to save humanity, rather than harm it. Turn Salem's weapon against her.

TBH its not a terrible idea the Grimm are practically infinite since they spawn from pools in the Dark Continent. (or at least it is heavily implied that until we know more about how the hell they work)
Also if Dr Merlot was able to create a version that can infect other Grimm then he would basically have a chain reaction that would eventually purge all non-pacified Grimm.

I believe he is doing it for the good and his reasons and goals are conflicting with Salem's, that's not bad and remember, they only target Humaniod beings and their creations... and get lured by negative emotions. I think Salem programmed the Grimm or are part of her magic or the ooze/portals? (Netherworld)

The cannon event was a team rwby solo, dlc teams didn't go through it. Also some gameplay elements are likely slightly different.

I'm pretty sure they're supposed to be elephants even though their tusks are more mammoth like due to Oobleck saying "The goliath in the room" instead of the elephant in the room. But as far as I know, those don't have hooves, so it couldn't leave a hoof print. I believe it's a large Grimm we haven't seen before.
To me this doesn't so much seem sinister as tragic. Like the frankenstein story; Frankenstein wasn't actually evil, he was a gentle soul who loved children. He was just attacked because he was big and scary. Maybe that's what the Grimm once were- gentle...
I don't think Merlot was based on Frankenstein, but Doctor Moreau, a mad scientist who sought to make animals into humans via cruel vivisection. He makes his beast-folk reject all animalistic activities and worship him. It's an interesting book talking about how different we actually are from humans. It's quite underrated in my opinion.

Except that Merlot was obsessed and didn't care how many people he put in danger or outright died because of his ambition for the Grimm (Which, really, the reveal of their origin in vol4 makes seem pointless). In the game it was implied he was the cause of the disaster in Mountain Glenn
