TF Prime fan to TF Prime fan A. TF Prime is the best show (RWBY and Teen Titans are tied for second) B. It should really say United we stand. Divided THEY fall. *screen moves to either dying Optimus or dying Pyrrah* (you pick)
One thing I like about Salem as a villain is that she does not underestimate her opponents, or at least tries her damnedest not to. She evaluates people's strengths and weaknesses and judges them appropriately. Oh sure, she's very confident in her victory, but every move is still calculated and she knows that if she leaves the good guys enough room to regroup and form a good strategy, they very much have a chance. This kind of reflects in the way she treated Cinder and the rest of her underlings in episode 1. Whereas everyone is ridiculing Cinder for what she failed to do, Salem actually recognized what she had actually accomplished. She's strict, and undoubtably evil, but in her own way, she's *just*. I still want to see her fail just like everyone else here, but... she's a pretty damn solid villain, and that gives her a really, really good chance of winning, or at the very least successfully scarring the world before going down.
the most impressive part is that, for the majority of the story, salem is in the exact same position as her enemies. she has no idea who's a threat at any given moment, and while her narration shows that she suspected ruby would play a part in ozpin's schemes, she had no idea how much of a pain in the neck this one child would be. in other words, salem can and often is caught on the back foot, unable to respond. the plan for beacon and vale went off nearly without a hitch, but in the process their team lost roman (who, while a minor player, was a valuable asset), failed to kill ruby and got cinder crippled, failed to retrieve the relic, got their dragon petrified and lost track of ozpin, since cinder is sure he died but salem knows that won't keep him down for long. salem's plan worked, but her side took a beating and had to regroup after. salem isn't this uber-powered nightmare antagonist who's holding all the cards. she's in the same position as ozpin, she just has more operatives and can replace lost troops easier.
Fus-Ro-Da! that antagonist (spoiler free!) isn't quite on the same level as salem is, because they are present in the story from the start. they don't have the same aura as salem does, and we see them fail a lot more often than salem does.
NEON Well you probably have to wait a while! We have to endure the entirety of JNPR fall... They're all based on famous martyrs (and now I want to see the Remnant Jesus...) EDIT: Reading through the comments overanalyzing the song, I feel like it's Yang that'll be gone... She will extinguish the flame.
I doubt any of them will die over the course of the show and the lyrics "1 spark can incite their hope and ignite the hearts of their weary souls, I will extinguish that flame" is her talking about how she'll destroy their ability to light the dark or ignite hope that doesn't really Tai in to Yang (yead I made a pun, I bet you're wondering Xaoi Long I've been waiting to use that)
Cinder is such a shit villain her voice actor sounds like she doesnt give a shit half the time i truly hope neo kills her and inherits the maiden powers
@@huynhtonhatquang7533 i mean i think she nailed cinders voice as she had the voice of a powerful person who feels they cant be stopped makes me sad she dosent talk herself normally now
This song made me realise one the of the reasons, maybe the main one, why Salem wanted to ally with the white fang. Humans already distrust the Faunus so if a big organisation of them kill and steal from humans, the humans will turn against the Faunus even more thus dividing humanity even more. She really does put all other villains to shame
Dylan McNab exactly. She & her underlings are all extremely powerful, but she doesn't rely on power alone. She has meticulously thought out plans. She examines every aspect of a given situation & acts accordingly. She's the most pragmatic villain I've ever seen, & being pragmatic is a very important thing when you're commanding troops of people. She can solve problems of discipline in a very strict, but very fair way. She gets shit done.
Artorias' elite It is confirmed comming this fall >< Hype! She is probably SPOILER : DONT READ IF YOU HAVENT WATCH THE LATEST EPISODE. LAST WARNING She is probably not dead. I think anyway, But Monty already created the story plan for 5 Seasons (Or 6?) So.... Hard to say, if the good guy can perma die, maybe she can to. Eh.
This song made me remember the moment when the gang (and us) learned that Salem is unkillable and how evryone dogpiled on Ozpin for not thelling them this. But he had the perfect comeback. "Do you know how hard it is to convince someone ti fight against something you can't kill?"
@@tatsumigakill7347 They might find a way to undo her curse. Or making her realise that what she did back in the day was wrong and after she accepts that she just turns to dust or smth like that.
Instead of "These children you mislead," I originally thought the lyrics were "Your children are minced meat." This is why lyric videos are important, guys.
It makes more sense now after the giant Lore Dump we got. No way anyone can defeat Salem in combat. Ozpin kinda proved that when he fought Salem and disintegrated her in their ruined mansion and she simply revived basically from nothing.
@DuckHunt(AxelRoxasXion) How exactly? She is literally immortal and that was before her grimmification. Look I don't like it either, but don't deny the truth, changing the wording does not change the facts. Even if the Silver Eyes are supposed to be some sort of counterbalance, they are not enough. Unless the writers have some sort of unique method or secret plan, then this looks pretty dark for our heroes no matter how positively you try to spin it.
@DuckHunt(AxelRoxasXion) he has lived at least 4 lives focused on beating Salem (the guy who made the staff, the guy in the suit who asked gin those questions, the king of vale and Ozpin the head master). And i doubt this is going to be an issue of linguistics like the whole "no man can kill me" thing in lord of the rings. She was granted immortality. She has tried to kill herself, she has let others cut her down, and she even survived that time when the god of darkness literally killed everyone on earth, after which it almost looked like a piece of the moon fell on her. But yes, it is still Ozpins fault because he asked the wrong question. he specifically asked "how do i destroy Salem" instead of "how can i stop Salem". The gods also said something about how she had to understand the balance of life and death, so possibly its just a matter of her needing to learn a lesson and boom, immortality gone. I hope its a bit more complex than that but thats all we have right now.
"It was you who ended their lives. Made them dig their own graves. With your dark, sick, cruel design. Convinced them their world could be saved." I feel like that is the first taste of Salem's main flaw where she blames everyone but herself. She's saying "Everyone dying is your fault for giving them hope. It's not my fault even though I'm the villain."
@@tonyepic8His Ex-wife who is trying to destroy the world, it’s not like he’s just trying to get back at her for some petty reasons. The only "not good" thing that Ozpin has done is keeping Salem’s immortality a secret, but the show actually goes out off it’s way to show that he’s perfectly justified in doing so. Lionheart, Raven and probably countless other allies in his past lives turned on him when they learned about it. Even our main characters spend like 2 episodes wondering if they should just give up when they learn about it.
If I had to guess... It's the story of how Cinder and Salem just keep putting grease on the stairs and videotaping the reactions of everyone else in the house when they try to go down them. I can see *zero* other possibilities.
Actually, I may fall is from vol 1. Even tho it was used for Velvet's weapon reveal, so i get your point But what about: Not _fall_ in love with you? xDD
TheRexRider the third volume was a demonstration of how the best can be defeated. Fall is synonymous with loss, defeat, death. All things that happened by the end of volume 3. Also this song is Salem's theme and her goal that we can see is to tear down humanity.
The sad part is, the fandom shows this perfectly because so many people doubt whether or not Ozpin is the good guy or not now. Which is exactly what Salem was after, plant seeds of distrust as to where your allegiances should be.
To be perfectly honest, it wasn't _that_ hard. Ozpin has been keeping a lot of shit hidden from most people, the Maidens, the Silver-eyed warriors and Salem herself, and has been going about this war like it's a game of chess, with both sides taking turns, which allowed Cinder to sneak into the Shit-Security communications Tower, and upload her "Order 66" virus. So yeah, Ozpin didn't exactly have my trust from the get-go, and it doesn't help that I'm a bit cynical when it comes to old-looking people who are in charge of an institution that trains people to fight.
Pretty sure the point is she'll USE that flame to burn them. Basically saying I'll turn your power against you. I mean, she's saying how she'll divide them and let them tear each other apart already so it's not that big of a stretch.
And now we know why she's filled with so much hate and rage. To be honest? I understand. Salem, bad as she was, didn't deserve what happened to her. Poor Salem, poor Ozpin. Fate dealt them both a cruel hand.
She refused to accept Ozma's death and move on. And in her quest to disrupt the balance of life and death, she ended up becoming the architect of humanity's extinction. I mean, come on. She's basically Satan, a creation of the Gods who rebelled against them and was cast out as fallen - given a path to redemption, but too angry and narcissistic to take it. She's a lot like the villainess Demona from the old Disney animated series Gargoyles - both tried to overturn a delicate balance for their own benefit, and despite having been given NUMEROUS chances to come to terms with what they've done, learn from it and try to be better, they never do because they pass the blame for their actions and the consequences of said actions onto others. They are always right, everyone else is wrong. Nothing's EVER their fault. Salem blamed the gods for Ozma's death and for not resurrecting him, then for resurrecting and killing him repeatedly, THEN for preventing her from being with him, AND THEN for wiping out humanity, when in reality it was all due to HER actions - except for Ozma dying of illness, that one's on illness. I wonder if Salem could use her destruction powers to destroy all illnesses in retaliation... That would have been an excellent path for her to take after Ozma's death, become a travelling physician in his memory, travelling the world as they planned, learning everything she could about disease and medicine, and helping people avoid the same heartbreak. Too bad she chose to blame the Gods instead of illness.
It's not like the light god said she couldn't do to the other brother and try, but how dare she do so? What? And then making it so she'll NEVER see her love? And being surprised about her revolting against them? Honestly the dark god IS better: he tried to bring ozpin back, he created fire (now we can eat food better), and more. I mean, yeah he also was apart of the bad, but he did TRY to do good for salem and ozma.
Yeah v6 to v8 like wow, this is some aot level foreshadowing and it not words it the music that foreshadows everything. For example bad luck charm and v7 ep 11 or 12
Having just come off of Volume 7 last night (probably start 8 tonight or tomorrow), yeah, this song hits like a truck after seeing just how horribly they've all played into Salem's hands. Just, ouch, all of the ouch.....and I know it's only going to get worse in Volume 8 due to both instinct/knowing how narratives work, in addition to the spoilers I already know.
"Have you no shame signing them up for your war. Train then to fight what they can't beat..." - Woman who recruited humans to help her fight the literal Gods
@@hiromitsumoonblossom8682 The thing is, Ozpin actually gets set _back_ whenever he's killed, _and_ it takes a significant amount of time for him to get back on his feet. Salem, on the other hand, comes back almost _instantly,_ in the exact same place, and can go about life as though nothing has happened. The worst part is that she can do this no matter _what_ you do to her. Basically, it's a psychological thing: killing Ozpin has an actual, tangible effect on him, whereas Salem can quite literally walk-off a nuke and pick up right where she left off.
Anybody else listening to this song after what we found out in Volume 6, Chapter 3? Because My God, knowing what we know now completely changes the meaning and even message of this song so goddamn much. One of many reasons why RWBY's soundtrack is absolute brilliance.
You mean better than the actual show in every way? Cuz thats what it somehow does in a SONG(something the new writers of rwby failed to do in literal VOLUMES)
Specifically, it rubs in how absolutely insane Salem is, and how badly she overreacted. The only thing Ozma/Ozpin did wrong was forget one of the cardinal Bro Code rules: Never put your d*** in crazy.
I feel like Salem is saying this to Ozpin. Like really, "Have you no shame? Signing them up for your war. Train them to fight what they can't beat. Your sins are what they'll pay for."
Do you think we'll get an episode detailing exactly what it is Ozpin did that royally pissed Salem off. having angered a few women in my day, this isn't just some basic buwahaha I'm evil so I do evil schemes, deal. this just screams extremely personal vendetta.
"Divide them, tear them apart Sever their trust, it will strangle their heart Inside them, plant seeds of doubt Hope will be smothered, they'll turn on each other " Who's coming back here after exactly this happening in v7 ch11?
Salem is the villain I have been the most scared of in a while. You can just feel her burning anger and hatred in this song. She's frighteningly dead set on just watching humanity crumble and making Ozpin pay for what he's done. I'm so pumped for Volume 4 but also super scared for what's in store.
Honestly the more I listen to this song the more I want to hear Salem's backstory and get to know her. I mean sure she seems evil but she's also interesting. Her world view seems unnecessarily dark and she seems to blame Ozpin for everything. I really want to see them both in Volume 4 and get more backstory.
There's also an interesting strain of self-righteousness in her song; she seems to be associating hope, not with victory, but cruel manipulation and suffering. What made her think that way?
Maybe Ozpin is the person who gave the maidens their powers, and at some point, they all grew to dislike him at least, Cinder's line when she goes up against Ozpin could be because of that, and not because of Salem, or both
geekgoddess2.0 Come on this is written by Matt and monty... soooooo.... prepare to feel that snoke scene a second time, yep I'm calling it cinder is going to incinerate salem.
This song really hammered in how bad the heroes lost. I mean they fucking *lost* it wasn't even close. People's trust in higher ups has been put in doubt. Beacon has been overrun and destroyed. Yang looks like a bloodthirsty psychopath and Pyrrha straight up killed someone. The truth of Penny being a robot was exposed. Cinder gained the full power of the fall maiden. ATLAS lost almost all their mechs and robots, and ATLAS looks like they slaughtered civilians. The CCT system was destroyed, making international communication and travel nigh impossible. Penny Ozpin and Pyrrha all died, and they're some of the strongest heroes in the series. Weiss was taken away from the fight by her father. Blake ran away and lost the will to fight. Yang lost her arm effectively crippling her and she lost her fighting spirit. And what did the villains lose? Roman, who is almost a non-factor compared to any of Salem's other allies. Aside from Ruby's Silver eyes, *everything* went perfectly according to plan, and that is horrifying. This song is the icing on the cake hammering in how fucked the situation is for the heroes now. All of this is part of what makes volume 3 the best one, and one of my favorite arcs in fiction.
Armed and Ready Yang Xiao Long This is a big what if, but what if Salem already knew about Ruby and her silver eyes and just left everyone else in the dark?
Evan Sayers salem didn't know she had them, if she had she would've warned cinder in order to preserve her strength. rehabilitation is hard and costly, much easier to keep their newly forged maiden healthy. she does know about ruby though and has for a long time known that ozpin would rely on his "smaller, simpler soul". the reason they're not concerned is because silver-eyes don't work on normal people. ruby will have to fight salem's team with her skill, and they're all decades ahead of her there. this isn't a fight she can win alone, and there's nothing salem is better at than separating teams and cutting them down one by one.
"when you'll get what you've earned and i'll watch you burn" This part made me think of Yang's theme "I get what i want so don't bother and just watch me burn!" probably not a connection but just a little thought i had.
A version like that (might have even been the same version) also played during the credits for one of the episodes in Volume 7, the one right before everything went to shit for the good guys.
I love RWBY's score because it paints a portrait of each character perfectly. I Burn shows the flame inside of Yang, Mirror mirror shows the diffiicult life of abuse that Weis had with her father, From Shadows shows the prejudice that she suffered for being different, Red like Roses shows the grief that Ruby has for "losing" her mother. This soundtrack is different from all of those. It doenst paint the image of a human being with flaws and virtues. It paints the image of a psychopath that will do anything to get what she wants. It shows the vile and selfish ways of a sick murderer: Salem. And that's why RWBY's score fucking rules.
Divide and I May Fall also turn all the symbolism from the heroic songs upside down. One can burn with passion, or burn the world. Shattering the mirror is bad luck no matter what's on the other side. You can rise from shadows, only to fall. Maybe red's like roses, maybe it's the *pool of blood.*
It feels like Salem is saying, "Attention all legendary villains. Sauron, Voldemort, Aizen, Freiza, Madara, and more. Step aside and let me show you how it's done."
at least she's doing what she said she would do. beacon's in ruin, nobody trusts the atlas military, huntsmen and huntresses have fallen, the tower has fallen, shits going down.
Monty Oum loved stories, and using elements from other stories to inspire his characters. He was also familiar with Final Fantasy. I wonder if Salem is inspired by Kefka. Salem has done everything she said she will. Kefka didn't just threaten to destroy the world, he followed thru. And so far, Salem seems to be following a similar pattern.
Hrm, I'm not sure Salem was inspired by Kefka per se; he wanted to destroy the world through overwhelming power, whereas Salem seems to be striving to make humanity destroy itself, just to demonstrate what a fool Ozpin was to place his faith in them. And she's going about it so meticulously that nary a soul realizes what's going on, we're talking about Sith Lord style evil here, much like Palpatine in his prime. This is a very diabolical foe, truly worthy to be the villain in Monty's story, I'm a bit frightened to think what her next move will be, but I know it'll come, soon.
V6 Spoiler I now get what it means at 3:30 “And I’ll watch you burn.” She already burned him alive before, so maybe she wants to do it again This song is literally predicating V6 I love this show
As I'm suffering right now in the hot Australian Summer, I find my repeatedly coming back to this song, because no matter how hot it is and how awful I feel, this song manages to give me chills every time.
does every character get their own song? I've heard of characters getting their own entrance theme, but this going an extra mile they didn't need too. That's really cool.
A villain who is vicious, cruel, without mercy nor remorse. Has a bad ass theme that boasts of a flawless victory and outright mocking the heroes with their humiliating defeat. Won the whole fight through manipulation of allies and even foes. And in the aftermath, the heroes are scattered and divided literally. Perfect.
everytime Salem's leitmotif plays, it sends chills down every nerve of my body. The lyrics in this song indicate that no matter how hard you try, no matter how much hope or what kinds of dreams you have, no matter how big your armies are, you will always fail. really paints Salem as more than just bad guy do bad thing. it really makes me believe that the protagonists really can't do ANYTHING to EVER win
So some people are saying that Salem was very weak in that last episode. and while yeah she was, one must remember, her power is through manipulation and divison, I love the idea of the chess board in the op because of this. in chess you very rarely win by brute shows of strength, at best you get a draw or a stalemate. In chess you win by cornoring pieces, making sacrifices and weakinging your opponent. By sending off tyrian and Mercury she is showing this, sending her men to Vaccuo to weaken them and possibly slow a supply of reinforcements. She knows that her stand in Atlas is a temporary one, and while her efforts may be a direct attack this time, it still holds the psychological impact, even if atlas win the day the people are stll shuck, vulnerable and most of all exposed. Atlas liked itself to an impermeable fortress and for that it will be all the weaker after words. Her strength was never that of her own force, but her power to unite allies and manipulate others We have seen that as far back as her in the tower where she couldn't escape by her self, or when she rallied the kingdoms against the GoD and GoL. A general's strength is in the war room and by carefully moving her pieces around she can when. Admittedly losing Hazel will damper her but it could be seen that Mercury was taking the strongman role anyway. Her strike in Vale was not to destroy the kingdom, not really at least, it was to destroy the cct, take the maiden powers and disunite her enemies. One must realise that in a long drawn out battle a single United front is a lot harder to chip away at then 3 individual fronts. Again I bring to the fore her strength in her disciples. Her maiden Cinder, while rash, is powerful and easily her most powerful single player. Her Queen Watts works in the background, scheming and dislodging the enemy at their strongest allowing her to stay strong. he can weaken the publics unity by keeping the cct down as he did with Penny, as well as spreadingdisunity by hacking the soldiers and altering footage, also attempting placing a weak vassel in Jaque around the table. For that I would call him her Rook Then their Was hazel, who, dispite his strength in battle one on one, wwas more used as a face and as a diplomat. he dealt with the white fang and spurred them on, ever present while also serving as a convincer to make allies due to his history with Ozpin. For that he would be her bishop Tyrian is her knight as he serves the role of spreading chaos throughout the enemy ranks but one must remember that she cannot win a war with four, admittedly strong personel. War is won by the soldiers on the front lines, and with that she has her main advantage. the grimm, her pawns who spread fear throughout a weakened, scared and disunited proples picking hem of one by one and if the humans live then they move to the next settlement, over populating that and causing more fear as resources run short. she has strong grimm too of course but intruth even the strongest grimm can be taken down with a united effort of gunning. So Salem is the king of her chess board, initially weak and by itself useless. And here I bring the main reason for why I feel The Rose's proved such hard adversaries to her, presuming Summer was the same as Ruby Ruby is in her own way manipulative. she can charm and unite her allies around her turning even the most lukewarm ally, for example Marrow, into a more believing one. By manipulating and uniting her allies Ruby can form a force that can win while stripping power from Salem. And where uniting and bolstering wins, pure strength looses. James is the literal Iron gauntlet of this situation. in even his earliest appearance James came in with a show of strength with his Airforce. seemingly scoffing at the idea that a few well trained warriors could do what a fleet couldn't. Despite this he always had a cushy position in a place that couldn't be touched. flying overhead in his stainless steel ships and blasting his enemies to bits, seemingly unaware that his real enemy could underneath his nose while he wasted ammunition on the grunts. at the end of the day what could James do to salem if he gets there, Lock her up and she spreads disloyalty by manipulation, killing her isn't an option and neither is capturing her operatives, she normally under that strategy has time to hide for a century, build her force and allow for grimm to be shot at while dislodging the assault at her core In short A general, even a well decorated one, is only one person, with out her allies she cant win I can see where one can see this as a disappointment, most shonen Antagonists are Physically strong. but rwby isn't a shonen, not truly and that's why I like Salem, conceptually at least, as a villain, she uses politics to win not true strength
Why do I adore manipulative villains so much? And I'm not talking about idiotic illusionists like that green-haired girl. Lies can be uncovered, and deceit solved. The best way to destroy one's enemy is through psychological warfare. Play upon their fears and doubts, and let their own insecurities do the rest. The best way to destroy a family is to exploit the cracks that are already there. More will form, and eventually the metaphorical glass of harmony will shatter. There's nothing quite as satisfying as watching your enemy ruin their own life.
Taxima I feel like that might be not too far away... With the events of Grimm Eclipse fully unfolded, and Dr. Merlot's theme, I worry that he made a breakthrough that started her on the path of developing stronger, smarter Grimm... Such that some may be capable of human speech before long.
Vasuki Dragon so does the rest of the series. the "aura" world of remnant ends with the sentence "use of aura can make you more than a man" and a still shot of ozpin, just standing there. ozpin is old, powerful, and using abilities nobody else possesses. to the degree that oscar asking qrow for "his cane back" is the only proof qrow needs that ozpin is back, since nobody else could replicate this feat.
Spoiler warning for V5: It is actually proven that Ozpin is the Wizard who created the maidens and he is forced to be reeincarnated everytime he dies as a punishment by the gods.
The only "big bad" villains I've seen even come CLOSE to Salem, in terms of competence and terror, is Darth Vader and Makuta Teridax - and, to me, that says a lot.
I'm pretty sure it is mentioned that Salem has been around for an incredibly long time, even before Ozpin, so I seriously doubt this whole "she's Summer" theory holds any ground. Plus they would at least have some similar features considering that RT reaaally likes to drive the whole "they are related" thing with some of these characters. Like seriously half the Schnees look like test tube clones and Yang and her Mom could be twins that had a weird edgy phase.
oGVexx Glynda is mentioned to be rebuilding Vale with the other teachers when Oobleck and Peter visit Tai in V4 though. Its even shown when we see Yang flipping through tv channels.
coming back to certain rwby songs after getting to a point in the volumes really opens your eyes again to the level of foreshadowing they put into these salem's presence has already caused a divide between allies, waaaay back before she was even revealed in season 3; with lionheart easily handing information to her as well as giving cinder, emerald, and mercury complete access into the vytal festival. and then in season's 7 - 8 where she makes ironwood paranoid beyond belief, planting the idea to just cut ties and fly away with atlas leaving the remaining citizens to rot with the hoard of grimm on their way alongside salem herself. with this, it's going to be interesting seeing if the vacuo headmaster joins in with a betrayal of his own or if he remains on ozpin's, as well as the teams, side.
What I love is back in the day there was this big clamor about how the lyrics of the songs weren't canon since they keep talking about all these super dark things and character motivations that didn't match what we saw in the show...and then we started learning about what was going on behind the scenes and realized that the lyrics actually were not only canon but *massively* foreshadowing what was coming.
Carrie Tributes That's the point of her plan. She had Cinder set up a ton of shit to make ATLAS, Beacon, and Ozpin look like the villains. Hell, they really might be for all we know.
Armed and Ready Yang Xiao Long that statement, "they might be", shows her plan isn't just working on the characters, _it's also working on the audience._
*Salem:* (Sings her villain song on stage and then turns to The Disney villains in the gallery) "Well, how'd you like?" *Disney Villains Minus the Horned King:* (One terrified squeak in response. The Horned King however merely claps.) *Salem:* "What? Aren't villains songs supposed to be about our dark ambitions?" *Jafar:* (musters his courage) "Madame, I'm a power-hungry madman who literally had a whole kingdom bowing before me while I humiliated the rightful Sultan and nearly raped his daughter, and I only have this to day... Madame, you all kinds of twisted and foul, and not in the good way." *The Horned King:* "Pfft! Wimps!"
*Bill raises his hand* I technically count as a Disney villain. Everyone keeps forgetting that. Anyway...I've done more horrible things than you could imagine. I tortured an entire town for 4 days with all the horrors of the multiverse. I've driven a man to pure madness without even trying. The only reason I lost was because of someone tricking me at the last moment and a dumb unicorn.
Do'nt forget Frollo from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" who was xenophobic, racist, sexually assaulted, lusted for, and committed arson for Esmeralda, and so on.
After watching Vol.6 eps 3 and 4, this song really reinforces the fact how much of a well-written character and villain Salem is. She knows that the most powerful weapon against her is hope. And hope is found in each other through trust. Take that away, divide them, plant seeds of doubt, they’ll turn on each other. It also helps paint Ozpin as “the bad guy”. He KINDA did sign up children in his war, but for a good cause. Good writing, Rooster Teeth 😊
No no, its good writing monty, cause he designed Salem, not roosterteeth, if they were the main ones responsible we wouldn't have the salem we have now
I don't get how no-one I've seen talking about Salem mentions this in more than a passing manner. She is straight up Saruman. The Grimm are birthed in a way similar to Uruks, she has a tower that overlooks that vast expanse of territory, much like his tower, she presumably has magic, seeing as she doesn't seem to be the one to use a melee weapon or bow, and Monty Oum was inspired by old fantasy stories and fairy tales, and LotR is as we all know pretty damn old.
she is talking about ozpin, you can hear her at the end of chapter 12 volume 3 saying "this is the begining of the end ozpin, and i cant wait to watch you burn"
yasser montasser There are still an unsettling amount of lines that apply to Yang in this song... Just look at the most chilling verse: "One spark can incite their hope and ignite their hearts of their weary souls. I will extinguish that flame." … Yangs symbol is literally a BURNING HEART. One of her later songs is literally called Ignite. and of course: "Strenght will not bring victory." Yang literally embodies strength according to Blake and no character has more connection to it. And two characters Adam and Blake, who Yang is connected to both have brought up strength. With Adam Beacon was a display of strength and with Blake that Yang is strength. Hell even Ghira said once strength is forgiveness. And I haven't even got into the maidens wrapped in a lie pat and Raven being a maiden! and "Strangle their hearts." again burning heart symbol. Kinda obvious. hope will be smothered? like a dying flame? either RT has just really a thing for flame symbolism or Yang is in serious trouble. Oh and lets Not forget about the divide and Doubt thing. Yang and Jaune are basically the only ones who Doubt Ozpin. ... I am scared for her.
Disney Villans Step aside. Cinder step aside. The Master step aside. Trancy Household step aside. Team Rocket step aside. The Dark Brotherhood step aside. There's a new bad ass villan in town.
When has team rocket ever been a real evil team, sure, steal pokemon, be foiled and blast off again, the TRio would be better good guys considering how they are to their pokemon and how they risked their lives to help on occasion
Damn... relistening to this now and paying real close attention to the lyrics again considering what we know now, a lot of these lyrics make a LOT more sense, and also have a lot MORE meaning than before... holy shit...
"These children you mislead, You'll watch them all bleed, STRENGTH WILL NOT BRING VICTORY" are my favourite lyrics in the entire soundtrack of the series
OccultCenturion I assure you, you’ve heard precisely that before. Just about every time Salem is onscreen the leitmotif of Divide is playing somewhere.
That coupled with the final verse, stating that all the protagonists will "Burn" makes me think Yang may be intimately involved with this song. Maybe this song sets up Yang's triumphant return!
AceofBlades X Or her tragic death. I don't want Yang to die, she is my favorite RWBY character after all, but her death makes way too much sense from a story telling perspective. If Yang died, it would devastate our heroes, and Ruby especially would absolutely lose it. Her death would serve as a catalyste for Ruby to fully awaken and control her silver eyes, and will give Ruby major develpoment. If this happens never will I be so sad about being right about a prediction.
Well CRWBY discussed they won't kill anyone from team RWBY until at least the final volume. Besides Yang I feel like Weiss could also die since she's Ruby's partner and one of her best friends. Imagine Ruby losing her sister and a best friend, it would push her over the edge. So for now the girls are safe but for how long?
Also think about the impact of a powerhouse like yang dying would cause? Yang is pretty much the embodied strength of the team, their heavy hitter, she’s a solid center to the girls, one they rely on. When Salem talks about extinguishing the flame of hope, I can’t help but imagine just how broken our team would be, especially Ruby, basically losing her second mother. There would be nothing for Ruby to hold back after.

The one thing the Bay movie did right, making Optimus die in as cool a way as possible, fighting 4 or 5 Decepticons all on his own.
I actually liked the Bay films (except 4. That one can die in a fire). Transformers 1 is actually my 2nd favorite live action movie.
Two Steps from Hell much
One thing I like about Salem as a villain is that she does not underestimate her opponents, or at least tries her damnedest not to.
It seems fitting if the FULL team Rwby takes her down to show that her plan to divide the heroes failed.
the most impressive part is that, for the majority of the story, salem is in the exact same position as her enemies. she has no idea who's a threat at any given moment, and while her narration shows that she suspected ruby would play a part in ozpin's schemes, she had no idea how much of a pain in the neck this one child would be.
in other words, salem can and often is caught on the back foot, unable to respond. the plan for beacon and vale went off nearly without a hitch, but in the process their team lost roman (who, while a minor player, was a valuable asset), failed to kill ruby and got cinder crippled, failed to retrieve the relic, got their dragon petrified and lost track of ozpin, since cinder is sure he died but salem knows that won't keep him down for long. salem's plan worked, but her side took a beating and had to regroup after.
salem isn't this uber-powered nightmare antagonist who's holding all the cards. she's in the same position as ozpin, she just has more operatives and can replace lost troops easier.
Yal Rathol Yeah, you're right! Good villain design right there.
Have you ever read Fablehaven? the main villain is also annoyingly smart and knows how to manipulate people well.
Fus-Ro-Da! that antagonist (spoiler free!) isn't quite on the same level as salem is, because they are present in the story from the start. they don't have the same aura as salem does, and we see them fail a lot more often than salem does.
"I will extinguish that flame"
and the verse after it
brings me to chills each time
The entire song is chilling. It leaves me scared for every living person in Remnant.
NEON Well you probably have to wait a while! We have to endure the entirety of JNPR fall... They're all based on famous martyrs (and now I want to see the Remnant Jesus...)
EDIT: Reading through the comments overanalyzing the song, I feel like it's Yang that'll be gone... She will extinguish the flame.
I feel like if anyone on Team RWBY is dying it's either Weiss or Yang (or both).

KawaiiUnicorn928 yeah, most villains rely on big shows of power, Salem seems to be more of a strategist which actually is a bit scarier

This song made me remember the moment when the gang (and us) learned that Salem is unkillable and how evryone dogpiled on Ozpin for not thelling them this.

Volume 6 Chapter 3.
Yeeeessss
@DuckHunt(AxelRoxasXion) Ozpin is a guy who has lived almost as long as Salem, don't you think he has pretty much tried everything at this point?
Convinced them their world could be saved."
I feel like that is the first taste of Salem's main flaw where she blames everyone but herself. She's saying "Everyone dying is your fault for giving them hope. It's not my fault even though I'm the villain."
tbf, ozpin isn't exactly a "good guy", you know since children like ruby caught in a war between him and his ex-wife
@@tonyepic8 Salem wants to end the world, she is one who dragged the kids in.
I may _fall_. When it _falls_. Watch them _fall_. There's a lot of use of the word fall in this volume. It's almost as if it's the theme of something.
It is obviously themed around.........Spring time :D
If I had to guess... It's the story of how Cinder and Salem just keep putting grease on the stairs and videotaping the reactions of everyone else in the house when they try to go down them. I can see *zero* other possibilities.
Brace yourselves, my lads. Winter is Coming
Actually, I may fall is from vol 1. Even tho it was used for Velvet's weapon reveal, so i get your point
But what about: Not _fall_ in love with you?
Well she will never break my allegiance with Roman despite him being dead. Favourite character ever!!!

Can I just say! After watching episode 3 of Volume 6... this song makes much more sense.
The last verse is "...and I'll watch you burn", but she already burned Ozma, so... Is she a pyromaniac?
@@perr0263 maybe thats just how she likes killing him I mean her name is salem and in the salem witch trials they burned the witches
I feel some sense of irony between these lines:
"I will extinguish that flame!"
"And I'll watch you burn!"
Which one do you prefer, Salem?
She is saying that she will destroy their hopes (extinguish the flame of hope) and she wants to watch them suffer ("burn" them to death)
ToastyMouse I’m late but I think it was written purposefully for irony bc of that
Pretty sure the point is she'll USE that flame to burn them. Basically saying I'll turn your power against you. I mean, she's saying how she'll divide them and let them tear each other apart already so it's not that big of a stretch.
Only Salem's flames are allowed to exist.
She is extinguishing the flame that resembles hope, and she's going to watch Ozpin burn.

That was a really underhanded blow, mate
Man it would be real HANDY if I could come up with puns like that.
Yeah, it's not really a "sunshine and rainbows" kind of song.

I searched "RWBY Jinn's Theme" on UA-cam. This song was the first result. Coincidence?
I feel like Salem is saying this to Ozpin. Like really, "Have you no shame? Signing them up for your war. Train them to fight what they can't beat. Your sins are what they'll pay for."
That's precisely what it's supposed to be.
Yeah it's basically a "Reason You Suck" Speech in song form. Given to Ozpin by Salem.
Now we just need a "world of cardboard" speech from Ruby by the end of it all.
Do you think we'll get an episode detailing exactly what it is Ozpin did that royally pissed Salem off. having angered a few women in my day, this isn't just some basic buwahaha I'm evil so I do evil schemes, deal. this just screams extremely personal vendetta.

Alyssa Agnew also he knew Hazel as well. That's very interesting.
Maybe Ozpin is the person who gave the maidens their powers, and at some point, they all grew to dislike him at least, Cinder's line when she goes up against Ozpin could be because of that, and not because of Salem, or both
As long as Salems back story isn't just "Created by that dark guy so they're evil" I'll be glad for anything.

Evan Sayers Hazel: "We've dealt with her kind before. How is it that a novice was able to best one of us?" Seems like they're not that surprised.
Rogue Pylon Like I said, big what if
Evan Sayers salem didn't know she had them, if she had she would've warned cinder in order to preserve her strength. rehabilitation is hard and costly, much easier to keep their newly forged maiden healthy. she does know about ruby though and has for a long time known that ozpin would rely on his "smaller, simpler soul".
the reason they're not concerned is because silver-eyes don't work on normal people. ruby will have to fight salem's team with her skill, and they're all decades ahead of her there. this isn't a fight she can win alone, and there's nothing salem is better at than separating teams and cutting them down one by one.
With my name being Roman, that hurt! I really liked the guy!
"when you'll get what you've earned and i'll watch you burn" This part made me think of Yang's theme "I get what i want so don't bother and just watch me burn!" probably not a connection but just a little thought i had.
I just realized that when Salem entered the room in the first episode of volume 4, a slow instrumental of this song played in the background. :o
I've known that ever since I first saw that episode.
yes, you're the most important one around here.
Topic change aside.
Kylana Pretty much every time Salem is onscreen the leitmotif of Divide can be heard somewhere.
A version like that (might have even been the same version) also played during the credits for one of the episodes in Volume 7, the one right before everything went to shit for the good guys.
This takes on a whole new meaning with the shutdown of Rooster Teeth.
Indeed my man, indeed.
I searched "RWBY Jinn's Theme" on UA-cam. This song was the first result. Coincidence?

This song puts every Disney villain song to shame.
Definitely. Just think of the video you could come up with for this song. Disneyfied it'd be incredible

You fucking wish m8

Alex Thomas nothing can beat Bill Cipher's scrapped song, it just fits the dorito too much
V6 Spoiler
I now get what it means at 3:30
“And I’ll watch you burn.”
She already burned him alive before, so maybe she wants to do it again
This song is literally predicating V6
I love this show
Cinder also burned him. Villans take turns to burn Oz over and over again.
San Nico thats true I never thought of that
This episode made me go back to the volume 3 soundtrack and listen to "divide" again and man it's hitting even close then before
As I'm suffering right now in the hot Australian Summer, I find my repeatedly coming back to this song, because no matter how hot it is and how awful I feel, this song manages to give me chills every time.
does every character get their own song? I've heard of characters getting their own entrance theme, but this going an extra mile they didn't need too. That's really cool.
most characters do
though some get lumped together
like Mercury and Emerald
or the whole of Team CFVY
I think "Caffeine" was also for Oobleck.
LezzerNet nope caffeine was made for team CFVY
Mr Roboshadow I think he was making a joke about the amount of coffee oobleck drinks
Weiss is on what, 5 songs? (Mirror 1, It's my turn, Mirror 2, This life is mine, Path to isolation)
Perfect.
"Have you no shame?"
Ozpin throwing a civilian off a cliff:
"No"
Now, since volume 6 we know what she meant with “train them to fight what they can’t beat”. This song makes so much sense now.
I love the fact that a volume 3 song foreshadowed a bunch of elements in volume 6
Back after today's episode...welp, time for this again O,O
This still remains to be one of my favorite songs ever
Man, this song is just... WOW It´s like hearing Salem speech and plan in the most hardcore, dark, scary and cool form possible
Psychological warfare, the song.
Yeah.
The chills.. The chills in this music... Oh boy...
Just what the hell did Ozpin do?
Had to be something pretty bad to cause salem to want to burn that bad.
Sebastien Emeric They slept together and Oz dipped out! Then Cinder was born
From the song itself, it looks like Salem seems to view the very act of Ozpin giving people hope as some dark deed of immense cruelty.
Nothing really, Salem is just the worst kind of narcissist.
coolclaytony Well we don't know that.
This is the anthem of the world right now. Salem's influence is extending further into reality
Just watched this in the clouds lmao
everytime Salem's leitmotif plays, it sends chills down every nerve of my body.
Wow, EVERY line has a double meaning now that we know salems past.
Her strength was never that of her own force, but her power to unite allies and manipulate others
We have seen that as far back as her in the tower where she couldn't escape by her self, or when she rallied the kingdoms against the GoD and GoL.
Her Queen
Watts works in the background, scheming and dislodging the enemy at their strongest allowing her to stay strong. he can weaken the publics unity by keeping the cct down as he did with Penny, as well as spreadingdisunity by hacking the soldiers and altering footage, also attempting placing a weak vassel in Jaque around the table. For that I would call him her Rook
Then their Was hazel, who, dispite his strength in battle one on one, wwas more used as a face and as a diplomat. he dealt with the white fang and spurred them on, ever present while also serving as a convincer to make allies due to his history with Ozpin. For that he would be her bishop
Tyrian is her knight as he serves the role of spreading chaos throughout the enemy ranks
but one must remember that she cannot win a war with four, admittedly strong personel.
And here I bring the main reason for why I feel The Rose's proved such hard adversaries to her, presuming Summer was the same as Ruby
Ruby is in her own way manipulative. she can charm and unite her allies around her turning even the most lukewarm ally, for example Marrow, into a more believing one.
Despite this he always had a cushy position in a place that couldn't be touched. flying overhead in his stainless steel ships and blasting his enemies to bits, seemingly unaware that his real enemy could underneath his nose while he wasted ammunition on the grunts.
at the end of the day what could James do to salem if he gets there, Lock her up and she spreads disloyalty by manipulation, killing her isn't an option and neither is capturing her operatives, she normally under that strategy has time to hide for a century, build her force and allow for grimm to be shot at while dislodging the assault at her core
In short A general, even a well decorated one, is only one person, with out her allies she cant win
I can see where one can see this as a disappointment, most shonen Antagonists are Physically strong. but rwby isn't a shonen, not truly and that's why I like Salem, conceptually at least, as a villain, she uses politics to win not true strength
What moron thinks Salem is weak? Lol.
Back after Vol 7 ch 11. ... Here we go again
Haha! The same with me.
Same here.. I swear almost every chapter this volume I've had to listen to this afterwards
Lawrence Gist what the fuck did Emerald do to you?
I don't think relying on illusions alone is exactly a good idea.
why win a battle when your enemies can bring you your victory on a silver platter?
I think one of my favorite things in RWBY is the songs that hint at the story we yet know not of. Hints scattered here and there, for us to catch.
3:02 ALWAYS gets me. I love it. I know they're mindless and incapable of speech, but I always imagine a hoard of Grimm shouting those lines for Salem.
Taxima I feel like that might be not too far away...
With the events of Grimm Eclipse fully unfolded, and Dr. Merlot's theme, I worry that he made a breakthrough that started her on the path of developing stronger, smarter Grimm... Such that some may be capable of human speech before long.
2:05 and then on will and always will be my favorite part and trying to figure out the notes on my guitar
WOW dude i can imagine it too
"Train them to fight what they can't beat."
Poor pyrrha.
Hoe dare you refrence that
It more like trying to keep the maiden power rather than fight salem
this really works with where we were left in volume 7... it fills me with fear for volume 8
redClover 83 you just made a pun
Have any one noticed that Salem never included ozpin on the "humanity" group? She always refer to him as something Else
Spoiler warning for V5:
It is actually proven that Ozpin is the Wizard who created the maidens and he is forced to be reeincarnated everytime he dies as a punishment by the gods.
Volume 6, baby
Volume 6 amiright
It's great watching all this old content after Vol.6. Now everything makes sense.
I love how *victorious* this song is.
I love how this song is from Salem’s perspective basically taunting Ozpin. This show is just amazing. Haven’t checked out Ice Queendom yet.
Frootz I think Salem is glynda
Frootz thats probably why we barely see glynda (aside from her voice actor being fired) and mostly salem
Vexx, I don't think that theory makes a ton of sense, but I WAS seriously thrown off by their voice actors sounding so similar.
oGVexx Glynda is mentioned to be rebuilding Vale with the other teachers when Oobleck and Peter visit Tai in V4 though. Its even shown when we see Yang flipping through tv channels.
Salem isn't Summer, Vol. 6, Epi. 3 confirms that
Came here after V6 Chapter 3(Which is now free on the RT site) its played as an instrumental in the background and this song makes so much sense now.
coming back to certain rwby songs after getting to a point in the volumes really opens your eyes again to the level of foreshadowing they put into these
salem's presence has already caused a divide between allies, waaaay back before she was even revealed in season 3; with lionheart easily handing information to her as well as giving cinder, emerald, and mercury complete access into the vytal festival. and then in season's 7 - 8 where she makes ironwood paranoid beyond belief, planting the idea to just cut ties and fly away with atlas leaving the remaining citizens to rot with the hoard of grimm on their way alongside salem herself. with this, it's going to be interesting seeing if the vacuo headmaster joins in with a betrayal of his own or if he remains on ozpin's, as well as the teams, side.
Yeah every volume divide grows in power
I love how she half deconstructs portions of her second verse with the first.
Wow this song makes ozpin look like a villain
Carrie Tributes That's the point of her plan. She had Cinder set up a ton of shit to make ATLAS, Beacon, and Ozpin look like the villains. Hell, they really might be for all we know.
Armed and Ready Yang Xiao Long that statement, "they might be", shows her plan isn't just working on the characters, _it's also working on the audience._
Often times, the most effective villains are the ones who can be seen as heroes in the right light.
Ozma freaking is
@@yotess3872 Not so sure Oz is any more pure than Salem is.
But the real question: Where did _humanity 2.0_ come from?
*Salem:* (Sings her villain song on stage and then turns to The Disney villains in the gallery) "Well, how'd you like?"
*Disney Villains Minus the Horned King:* (One terrified squeak in response. The Horned King however merely claps.)
*Salem:* "What? Aren't villains songs supposed to be about our dark ambitions?"
*Jafar:* (musters his courage) "Madame, I'm a power-hungry madman who literally had a whole kingdom bowing before me while I humiliated the rightful Sultan and nearly raped his daughter, and I only have this to day... Madame, you all kinds of twisted and foul, and not in the good way."
*The Horned King:* "Pfft!
AbsolX Guardian
Gravity Falls reference, right?
ElvenRaptor Yup!
AbsolX Guardian
So Bill and The Horned King would love the song, then!
No no, its good writing monty, cause he designed Salem, not roosterteeth, if they were the main ones responsible we wouldn't have the salem we have now
Such a great encapsulation of humanity in general. We HATE each other.... over the dumbest of reasons....
TheFableGamer LoTR is a movie though not a story
Loungayvan Batuyog originally a book.
Vol 1: a kid show
Vol 3:hold my beer
"Watch you burn"
YANG NOOO!!!!!!
she is talking about ozpin, you can hear her at the end of chapter 12 volume 3 saying "this is the begining of the end ozpin, and i cant wait to watch you burn"
yasser montasser
There are still an unsettling amount of lines that apply to Yang in this song...
Just look at the most chilling verse:
"One spark can incite their hope and ignite their hearts of their weary souls. I will extinguish that flame."
…
Yangs symbol is literally a BURNING HEART. One of her later songs is literally called Ignite.
and of course: "Strenght will not bring victory."
Yang literally embodies strength according to Blake and no character has more connection to it. And two characters Adam and Blake, who Yang is connected to both have brought up strength. With Adam Beacon was a display of strength and with Blake that Yang is strength. Hell even Ghira said once strength is forgiveness.
And I haven't even got into the maidens wrapped in a lie pat and Raven being a maiden!
and "Strangle their hearts."
again burning heart symbol.
This 100% still stands especially for the current season especially with the most recent episode
I'm amazed of how these songs get better the more you watch the show. This one makes even more sense now :__
Disney Villans Step aside.
Cinder step aside.
The Master step aside.
Trancy Household step aside.
Team Rocket step aside.
The Dark Brotherhood step aside.
There's a new bad ass villan in town.
Flower Covered Failure Team Rocket blast off...
XD
When has team rocket ever been a real evil team, sure, steal pokemon, be foiled and blast off again, the TRio would be better good guys considering how they are to their pokemon and how they risked their lives to help on occasion
even bill cipher?
@@spark9189 even bill cipher.
This song takes an all new aspect when you watch Volume 7 and relook into the lyrics...
Damn... relistening to this now and paying real close attention to the lyrics again considering what we know now, a lot of these lyrics make a LOT more sense, and also have a lot MORE meaning than before... holy shit...
I’ve been looking for this song forever
"These children you mislead,
You'll watch them all bleed,
STRENGTH WILL NOT BRING VICTORY"
are my favourite lyrics in the entire soundtrack of the series
Coming back from vol 6.. EVERYTHING MAKES SENSE NOW
Welp, back here after V7C11. Salem stole the entire show in like two minutes.
I gotta be real this is the single best song (IMO) in all of RWBY
somehow I think an instrumental version of this would make a kick ass final boss theme.
perhaps Qonell will make one
OccultCenturion I assure you, you’ve heard precisely that before. Just about every time Salem is onscreen the leitmotif of Divide is playing somewhere.
I always thought it was "The hope of your people has failed," not "the hope of your people assailed." Huh, weird knowing it's not now.
Imagine if Salem was actually as cool as this song makes her sound
Yeah because this is genuinely one of the best villain songs in history, i'm not exaggerating. (it is only my opinion however.)
What a waste
when the song says I will extinguish that flame I keep thinking that she means she will kill yang
I think it's ruby, ozpin said that ruby had a spark that could give people hope to oscar, so maybe she will kill ruby. I hope that's not the case.
I used to listen to this song when I was 7, yes it changed me.
that is a great mental image
Thanks to Volume 8, I'm back to listening to this absolute banger of a villain song.
rwby is like im watching someone play a game of chess
