Thank you for this, its the best review on joysticks ive found so far. This is exactly why i gave up using fixed beams and railguns in elite dangerous!!
They actually use 16-bit hall sensors in x52. It's just they also use some convoluted double magnet design for some reason. Which in it's turn makes this stick as it is - non linear and janky. But you can actually fix that in like an hour with a couple of small flathead screws and a drop of superglue. Also time to release some x62 or even x72 is waaaay past due. Change that stupid mouse knob for an analog ministick, chage gimbal for a pincer design, some reimagining of grip wouldn't be unwanted also. Maybe recent revigoration of this market will make them move their asses.
The closet Hotas in price to the X52 is the Thrustmaster T16000 Hotas for around 180-256 on amazon(more leading to the higher price due to demand and shipping issues). I would love to get a vkb gladiator nxt but it is only a stick and with it's shipping cost with tax to my area would make it cost around 280usd which is close in price to a full kit thrustmaster T16000(stick, throttle, and paddles if in stock) or a Logitech G x56. I wish there was more mid range hotas set ups in the 100-200 range as this is dominated by Logitech and Thrustmaster with 2-3 options and all other companies I see that make Hotas in this range are from unknown companies, bad reviews, and due to their product shipping would add around 80usd to them and thats a big no go for me. Nice vid
A simply thing you can do to improve the response of the joystick is to link 4x cable ties together into a loop, place it under the spring and close up the loop till its sits snug & even under the spring.
@@FalconsLedge i mean even if they just kept the same design to save on retooling and just swapped out the internals with better newer stuff i have both an x52 and x 52 pro and what they desperately need is like a redesign of all the parts that peak so the safety latch on the stick needs a better spring the thumb Mouse needs to not be defective the cable linking to to should be something harder to damage that a ps/2 i mean seriously do they even make cable for those any more lol replace it with idk vga, dvi something thats screws in or something that pulls out easily usb etc make it something that wont come out or somthing that will come out without bending pins or the socket fix the damn spring its a 20 year old flaw replace it with a better more adjustable system ...make it modular make it so i can unscrew the right hand flight stick from its base and screw on a left hand one or a flight yoke or a extender for a floor mounted stick like if they just did it right they could keep on selling it for another 20 years but at this point its like asking something to buy a used 2000 corolla for the price of a new one is just silly

I dusted off my 15 year old X-52 last week to get back into DCS, and amazingly it still works perfectly. I really want a new setup, but its hard to be FREE on the shelf! I really miss the old Force Feedback sticks, but I just make due with a seat transducer these days.
There are new Force feedback sticks that make the old ones look like toys. Also basically every stick on the market has that kind of longevity. It's not really a feature, more of a standard.
@@FalconsLedge You get to a point where your simulation is so detailed, you may as well build the plane....I don't think spending $2500 on a fake joystick and throttle are realistic for most people. Especially when FF sticks used to be everywhere

I bought my x52 couple weeks ago, so it's pretty new. First thing I noticed watching this is that mine doesn't have "Flight Control System" written on the stick. And a fun fact, the momentary switches on the stick don't work properly, from the moment I unboxed it. The 3rd one from the left is (T5 to be precise), doesn't click to the up side unless I switch it from the furthest left point. And the HOTAS has incredibly cheap feeling. Even though it's my first ever HOTAS, the first moment I get my hands on it, I thought "huh, this is piece of crap". But it gets the job done. At least for now. Ah, and the ting happens at 7:35, also happens to me (from the first day I started using it), whenever I play "intensely" for a period of time. But mine happens to Y axis.
I think the flight control system is from saitek, which is who produced mine. The new ones are produced by Logitech. Sorry to hear about the one you got, quality seems hit and miss from Logitech.
I just got a thrustmaster tca airbus package and it’s my first stick and throttle and I’m truly impressed. In this price range I would prob choose thrustmaster. Logitech tends to feel more cheap even though more functions typically. My stick was designed to be as realistic as possible matching the actual airbus
@@billygames7107 really depends on how much you are spending. For a single stick less than $150, you just can't beat the gladiator NXT. If you can get the TM TCA for less than $100 I'd say that's pretty decent, or of you primarily fly commercial flight sims over combat sims. Once you get to warthog range, unless you can get the WH for 350 or so, I'd say go for Virpil winwing or VKB, they are all higher quality by volumes than thrustmaster.
@@FalconsLedge I got the tca with the throttle pack for 150$ I’m pretty happy about it. The dang throttle is sometimes 150$ alone. You are right about everything you said though..✌🏼
Awesome and concise review! A very long time ago I had a Saitek joystick with the same gimbal solution (the spring + plastic ring) and it was so sloppy I got another joystick which had a different gimbal. I'm sad that they still hang into that damn spring.
You can re-adjust the height of the wrist-rest by unscrewing the nob in the back and raising/lowering the wrist rest for a more comfortable experience. This can fix a lot of the problems listed in this video. Otherwise, the stick works well for beginners.
i purchased a used x52 yesterday only because after not playing any simulators for over 30 years thought I would give it a try .Considering i was lucky enough to get it for $50 Aud , i am verry happy with it so far and if I continue to play might at some point upgrade. @@mr.yonosenada VKB gladiator NXT is in the same price segment as the x52, but it's about 10x better. I will be posting ac review of the GNX today or tomorrow.
Few years ago, I've used to own Saitek X52 and for me it was a great hotas. Today it's also a good option, but IMO only as a used one. As for the your issues with the sensors. It's actually quite known issue with this stick. But it can be easyli fixed. Just stick extra magnets to the ones already in the base and all deadzone dissapears and the stick becomes very accurate.
The issue is not fixed by magnets. I have tried the mod, it does not fix the accuracy problems, in fact in many respects it makes them worse. It gives the feeling of it being more accurate, but in reality its not. I don't think there is any way I'd recommend this stick over others available at the same price point. it is 20 year old tech still being sold as new today. Fruthermore Logitech doesn't care about flight sim hardware, don't buy from a company who doesn't give a flying crap about the segment you are buying from. I get that you had it and didn't have problems with it. This does not make it a good product. A good product is defined when it out competes its competition. In this case it just doesn't. I would much rather have a Gladiator NXT stick only than this HOTAS. The NXT is orders of magnitude better than this thing.
@@FalconsLedge I did fixed it in my case. And I agree with you. Today there is no way, I'd buy one instead of Gladiator. But as a cheap used option, it's not that bad.
@@BartAnt84 I don't really explore the used market on this channel, as it is not consistent, as an example at one time only a year ago used Warthogs (another stick I don't recommend anymore) were selling for more than MSRP. As a used item I 'd recommend the T16k before the X52. Better sensors.
it bothers me that all the HOTAS out there in this price range (which is still considerable compared to just a joystick) have such serious manufacturing flaws. If I'm going to pay $200 for a controller, I expect it to be high quality.
@@FalconsLedge Yeah... I'm seriously considering that one. Maybe even without a throttle to start with. I just bought IL-2 and want to play it in VR, so I'm going to want to make sure all the necessary controls are on the stick rather than the keyboard.

@@FalconsLedge There is no option for just slightly more. The only option would be the WinWing, which is a Hosas, not a Hotas. Thanks for a great review. What’s the music playing in the background, btw? Reminds me of Star Citizen, but I haven’t fired that one up since the first hangar release lol. I was actually pretty close to buying the X52 a couple weeks ago due to a good deal, but decided to go for the VKB Gladiator NXT and wait for VKB’s throttle instead. I used to use VKB’s old mass-market Cobra M5 with an Njoy controller and had to sell it when I moved, and I felt like X52 would be a step down even from that. So the GNX uses it's own gimbal, so it's not compatible with the gunfighter series for sure, but I don't know about older mid range bases from VKB. I would not purchase either of these sticks. They are seriously outdated, some of the worst accuracy on the market, terrible ergonomics, and it's a totally dead ecosystem from a company that doesn't care at all about combat Sims. If you want the best bang for your buck buy VKB Gladiator and STECS throttle. The difference is incredible for the money.
I've gone through a lot of Saitek products in my life. Had the X36, which had its rudder axis acting up once the warranty expired. Then I got the X52 which had its pinky switch stuck once the warranty expired. Then I got the X65 which had frayed wires in the throttle once the warranty expired. Then I got the Thrustmaster Warthog. Never buying Shite-tek again!
This is the worst solution to go with. The worst, they are awful, inaccurate, low quality, unergonomic, and even worse it's giving money to a company that doesn't care about your hobby.
I'm sorry they are so hard to get in some places. I've never had a problem getting them in the US. My recommendation would be to look at saving a tad more and going with Winwing if you can't get a VKB that is more in your price range. I have messed around with one, and it has a bit better materials on parts, but the gimbal still has the same problems, and they use two of the same garbage sensors per axis. So it should be slightly better, but for the cost you could have a gladiator nxt and TM throttle and there is absolutely no comparison between the two. The GNX is better in every conceivable way.
The sensors are very accurate and not garbage at all, you simply don't know how to properly calibrate the stick which is why you're getting stick drift! When calibrated properly, it is super precise, needs no deadzone and does not drift. And it just works day in, day out. Which is a far cry from the reputation that POS "warthog" stick has in the flight Sim scene.
this is my first gear so i didnt think much and bought first one i saw, to figure out what i want from this gear. only thing that annoys me - i need to make holes in table, very unstable gear, they should put some iron in the base. also not all buttons are comfortable on stick.

No offense, just to be fair I personally think that you can't compare your 13 year old (I guess often used) stick with a newer one. Because that just makes it look bad. If you said that it was like this from the day you got it (wich I don't think it was), it would've been OK, but a 13+ year old stick has obviously lost performance over time and isn't as good as any newer one. The video is still pretty well done and was nice to watch. Keep it up!
Lol, I do remember what it was like in 2004. The X52 is not a good stick. I'd rather have one gladiator NXT than the pair of sticks from the x52 any day. Furthermore, Logitech doesn't give a crap about flight sim hardware. They aren't innovating or coming up with new hardware. They are just riding IP they purchased years ago. Don't give money to companies that don't care about their product. Same goes for ThrustMaster, they haven't produced a decent product since 2011 with the Warthog. The Warthog doesn't stand up to it's opposition today either. My main issues with the X52 are: bad ergonomics on the stick, low quality sensors, and overall low quality. These things don't change over time. Have a nice day.

I would not consider the x52 to be good, no. But I also don't think he x56 is good either. The biggest problem with logitch if that they don't give a flying crap about combat Sim hardware. What I'd suggest is to keep the x52 Throttle, is not great, but not bad either, and it sounds like you got a good deal on it. Buy a VKB Gladiator NXT EVO and use that as a stick. It will be a setup that will be very good, and significantly better than the x52 stick (the worst part about the x52)

Back in 2015 when my Saitek ST200 USB bought with Freespace died I did consider it but at the times I wasn't sold on HOTAS (I tended to play old-ass games that often don't even support throttles and almost never twist) and all the cons I heard about scared me off, so I went with a CH Products Combatstick which was probably the most low-maintenance stick I could afford back then, I'm only thinking of changing it because Windows 10 broke the software that did calibration and input filtering and CH Products is not bothering with their gaming lineup anymore even though they are still making them. And yes, the design was a red flag for me too. You could kind of tell they tried to make it look "impressive" to compensate the overall cheapness of the set and if my memories of the review in 2015 served me right it stil worked back then with many reviewers praising the sapacey-wacey looks. The nub was useful to me to slew around the Radar and Maverick Curser in BMS. Until it started to fail. And if I am not mistaken it was mappable. But I cannot remember since it is more than 10 years ago. But I am 99% sure it was. The Thrustmaster T16000 has not enough POV's and no 1st and 2nd detent trigger which is needed in Falcon BMS or even in DCS in certain models. So for all other games it might be the better option. But Falcon BMS and DCS needs a proper HOTAS with many Rotaries and POV's. Unfortunately. And the budget is a thing when comparing a 120 USD (used) X52 to a way over 300-400 USD HOTAS that gives the same functionality. I don't even know why I am watching this 😅 since I know this HOTAS so very well hahaha. Mine lasted many years with many play hours a day. I was so addicted to Falcon and DCS.
I have had an Extreme 3D Pro for 10 years now. Would the X52 be a worthy upgrade for 55-65 €? Or should I just go for a T.16000 + TWCS + TFRP for 170 €?
If you can afford it though, a much better solution and what I consider to be the best bang for your buck right now would be the Gladiator NXT paired with that same TWCS. IMO the GNX is vastly superior to the x52 and T16K for a reasonable amount more.

@@FalconsLedge HI mate do you know if the hotas work on War thunder on ps4, I can't find too much proof that it work. Some people say yes some people say no... 😭
More power to you then, but what I have is context. I've used this and many other sticks, and that's why I know that the x52 does not measure up to it's competition.
The t1600m is an absolute piece of trash by comparison, you're quite deluded in this review. If you knew how to properly calibrate your stick, you would get super precision and no axis drift, and with Teflon spray on the plastic ring at the base of the gimbal, you'd have a super smooth motion. I don't disagree the VKB is a step up in some ways, although the warthog has way too many problems of its own. But the x52 is a popular stick for a reason - it's very precise when calibrated properly.
No way in hell am I using that disgustingly cheep looking T16000M or the expensive and weird looking VKB Gladiator. I'd rather get this even with all the downsides but with better quality, looks and more buttons.
Maybe if you bothered to keep your area and the hardware clean, you'd have been less prone to accruing faults in the control systems. In your next review, leave your snarky "personal opinions" to yourself.

Yeah I'd totally welcome those changes, and they are way pay due.
X56?
Very detailed information. Thank you for the reveiw.
A simply thing you can do to improve the response of the joystick is to link 4x cable ties together into a loop, place it under the spring and close up the loop till its sits snug & even under the spring.
That affects the feel of the gimbal not the accuracy of the sensors., If it works for you great.

The pro has a dual spring gimbal, some additional metal bits and two of the very low quality Hall sensors instead of one.
On the plus side some of the metal bits are some of the high wear items.

@@legokid201 so that's where I disagree, at least in today's market. You need to compare it to what's available. The t16000m, while imperfect is a better kit for the same money as the x52. Better sensors, better gimbal.
And for a little more the Gladiator NXT is 100x better than the x52 it's not even in the ballpark.

Hey thanks for the vid! Does it work with Xbox series s/x on flight simulator 2020?
This stick is 20+ years old. Xbox consoles require a specific security chip in order to function as a peripheral, so no, it likely wont work.
Hi, I am struggling to find the softwere, the Saitek website doesn't work anymore and the Logitech download section is empty. Any link to download? I think the softwere is the same but just in case, I have the pro version. Thanks!
Hm I don't see the software either
@@FalconsLedge Well, thats bad, I'll keep looking, if anyone who's reading could help me it would be nice!
Keep it up!
It was like that from the day I got it for the most part, and I've used 5 or 6 other x52s and they all share the same faults.
@@FalconsLedge OK, that's weird though.
Mine doesn't have any flaws.
@@ben.oderso804 Mine too work perfect.
For clarity are you reviewing your own stick you bought in 2004 having now put 100/1000s of hours on it???
I was gonna get a new x56 for $205 on amazon but picked up a used x52 for $30, would you consider that to be good? I thought it would be nice for the money, I just needed an upgrade from the logi attack 3
It will be a setup that will be very good, and significantly better than the x52 stick (the worst part about the x52)

do you recommend the pxn 2119pro ?
Looks like an Uber low end licensed copy of the x52. I don't recommend the x52, let alone Uber low end copies of it, but here's the thing:
If your budgetary limitations are such that the pxn 2119pro is what you can get. It can't be worse than no hotas right?
Personally I'd save up a bit more and get a T16000, it's a bit higher quality and has a far better sensor.
@@FalconsLedge make sense thank you
Is any joystick that doesn't do, like X52. Is X52 pro any better?😬
Not much better, slightly better feel, slightly better sensor arrangement, but not enough to be worth it in my opinion.
@@FalconsLedge . Thank you. 👍 Experience and opinion, what i came for. That jerking is pretty bad.... 😬 Trying get some information. And try to play VR IL-2 for the starters...
@@alexk2418 sensor not website... Not sure why that corrected to that, sorry. Depending on your budget, that is what is going to determine what is the best bang for your money. If you are limited to x52 money, say under 200 for both throttle and stick, the t16000m kit would satisfy you. If you can go to 250, then you will not beat the vkb Gladiator NXT with the thrustmaster TWCS throttle to pair it with.
If you only do warbirds and you want a bit higher end solution you could stick with the TWCS throttle and go for the vkb gunfighter mk.iii warbird edition. The big plus here is that you can buy other grips like the kosmosima if you decide to fly more modern aircraft
@@FalconsLedge . After your review, I will definitely go for that gladiator. In my opinion, 150€(pro190€ on that side of the globe) too match many for that behavior (X52 jerking). Sorry I don't think it's good as a first. VKB Gladiator NXT is the best first stick. If money is super concerning then t16k.
I didn't know the trigger was dual stage though, or at least I don't remember anyone else mentioning it in their reviews.
I love to poke at the looks, because it's really cheesy. It can certainly work for people and the throttle isn't half bad for a single axis one.
@@FalconsLedge I think I saw a knock-off x52 throttle during the mid 2010s while ggogling sticks back then, I'm not sure but IIRC VKB made it but I can't swear on it.
@@det.bullock4461 VKB does not offer throttles, but they are coming out with one in a couple months here, but it's nothing like the x52 throttle.
There are a bunch of throttles and some sticks that either stole the design or licensed the design from saitek.
@@FalconsLedge It was back when they still made the Cobra Defender, I don't have very clear memories of that time. I just remember what was visibly a knock-off x-52 throttle being associated with them, I don't remember if it was them or just some forum threads of people that used said throttle with their VKB stick.
I would go for the T16k over the x52
If you can afford it though, a much better solution and what I consider to be the best bang for your buck right now would be the Gladiator NXT paired with that same TWCS. IMO the GNX is vastly superior to the x52 and T16K for a reasonable amount more.
@@FalconsLedge Trouble is the TM devices come in a pack, which I am not able to separate. So it'd be all or nothing on TM.

@@ezanchi5422 the x52 is 20+ years old. It may be worth it, but the T16k has a much better sensor, a better gimbal, and it doesn't look like a bad 90s future joystick concept design. (It looks like an early 2k design that is still pretty ugly IMO, but better than the x52).
You might like the x52, who knows, that's ultimately up to you.
It seems just about every single HOTAS that's available for me has loads of people complaining of some very deal breaking issues.

Wait, you complain that it feels like it has a dead zone in SC, and then set a dead zone in DCS and complain that it's not sensitive enough? I'm not understanding.
You're also comparing a $150 retail hotas with 15+ years of wear on it to one that's $400 minimum with much less wear.
In wasn't saying they were the same, just saying that the difference was staggering. The sad part is that Warthogs aren't great compared to its competition. The stick didn't perform any better new fyi
Also I altered the deadzones numerous times. You assume I never tried anything, but I did. The x52 isn't a good stick. It may have been when it had no competition a decade ago, but not today.
I paid 68 pounds for this about ten years ago. A bargain. Not planning on spending a weeks wages on a joystick. My only gripe is it's too small for my big hands. I cannot touch the pinkie switch with my pinkie
More power to those that enjoy it. And 10 years ago it was a pretty good solution. Nowadays there are significantly better solutions for a few dollars more.
Man one is like 4x the price
Which one are you referring to?
When you let go of the stick and it drifts you might say it adds a sense of more realism to the flight. After all in real life unless autopilot is active letting go of the stick you dont still fly a straight line
Lol no, the stick centers, but the sensors drift, this is due to very low quality sensors and a badly designed gimbal, there is no positive side to it
@@FalconsLedgeright the stick might center and a real one would show movement if you let it go. But still in real life letting go of a stick the craft would lose control with no auto pilot engaged and no hands on the stick. LOL
