  • I take you on a tour of my Back Garden to show how well - or not - the plants have done after the unusual harsh British Winter. We also see the glorious spirea 'bridal wreath' in full flower.
    My English Garden is near the coast in North-West England, 1/3 of an acre (including the house) Zone 9a with sandy soil.

    I can't believe you are so much ahead of me! I gave my Russian sages to my best friend a few years ago, I don't even remember why. They thrive in her garden and she is pleased with them no ends. I have two very big spireas (Spiraea vanhouttei) in front of my house, I am going to cut them back a lot this year and see what happens. I need more light and space in that part of my garden. Thank you for the tour!

    • @paultsworld

      That Russian sage had better flower this year! It is looking healthy though.
      I’ve just looked up your spirea - lovely big blooms - I’m sure they won’t mind being cut back hard.
      I’m sure your garden will catch up and ‘overtake’ mine in a month or two when your temperatures get going and mine stay where they are 😀 🌻

    I do hope your tropical plants pull through . The winter was certainly harsh on much of my garden - I lost a couple of Cordyline and a climbing fuchsia, so I’m looking for ideas to replace those. Love the Spirea at the end there - what a display! Always a joy to see your garden Paul 😊

    • @paultsworld

      Those cordylines shoot back from the base Lindsay, so give it a few more months before calling in the undertaker. That is if it’s a green one or even a red one - I had a small pink one that I knew wasn’t very hardy so I’m sure that’s a gonna!. So pleased you enjoy the garden.🌻

    What a lovely surprise to have another video this week. I spotted the robin early on. He's under the Euonymus when you were showing us the Lamium. You must be pleased that so many tropical plants have made it through Paul and I hope your Brugmansia springs to life soon. Did I see Thalictrum next to last year's photo of the Lobelia "Queen Victoria"? I've never managed to get any germination from the seeds so it shows that you really do have green fingers.

      @@hanhanckmann9121 I just leave them in the ground - I put a mulch over them and hope for the best. Some of them have been OK in the ground for 20 years. Sometimes if very wet weather is forecast in Winter I will cover the bed with a tarpaulin as they don't like to be wet over Winter.

    You have a very entertaining and educational show. I love your tropical bed, don't panic about your brugmansia aka Angel Trumpet. I grow many of these in various heights and colors of trumpets. I live in South Carolina, USA zone 8. In the fall I cut these back to the ground and mulch them heavily. Last winter it dropped to 8 degrees (-13 celsius). Luckily mine did survive and they are just starting to shoot up from the root system.

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  Рік тому

      That’s really interesting how you deal with the brugmansias - I should have done what you do and cut down to the ground - I tried mulching round it but the badger swept the mulch away looking for worms. I’ll try that next year.

    Good Morning, Paul, Things are going well in the back garden! The music you chose was very amusing. Love the little red assistant landing on the plant as you were describing it, quite the showbird. Ironic isn't it, you finally get to make a tropical garden and wham, coldest winter in years! To tell you the truth, I have been quite alarmed by how mild your winters have been previously. It wasn't right, (in my opinion) Two or three minor frosts a year wasn't sounding normal to me even though you live on the coast. May your Spring sunshine warm the soils of your bananas and cannas! 🌞

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  Рік тому +1

      Hello Margaret, I normally just follow the robin - he choreographs the tour.
      Actually my very first gardening video was inspired by an orange tip butterfly flitting from plant to plant so I followed it and chatted - and suddenly I had a gardening channel!
      It’s true, we didn’t have a Winter here last year - probably the mildest ever where I live. It’s all down to the jet stream and where it drags the highs and lows. If a high doesn’t pass at a certain latitude to drag cold northerly air from the Arctic we get constant South-westerly or westerly winds and it’s almost impossible for the West coast of Britain to get a frost if the wind is coming off the Atlantic Ocean from that direction - particularly with the Gulf Stream bringing constant warm water from the Caribbean straight to my little garden 😄. That’s my theory anyway! 🌻

    • @margaretmichelsen766

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  Рік тому +1

      So sorry you lost the plants that were in the garage. But don’t give up on things too quickly - some of the experts say wait till at least June.- growth can come up from the roots. I’ve never had a problem with dahlias in the ground but this year I’m a bit nervous - particularly as my two favourites- moonfire & bishop of Llandaff are slightly more tender than many others.

      I have some brugmansia cuttings I’m trying to get going - the one I’ve got is a bit tricky but one or two should make it.

  • @titiaswildlifecottagegarden

    Hey Paul🙂
    I always enjoy seeing your back garden.
    I love the variety of plants you have in (to me) such a big space.
    Love the bridal wreath, maybe I will add this plant someday to my new garden to🥰
    Maybe as a part of a double row of native hedging for our local birds.
    Last Friday I went to the garden centre and bought soil for my hydrangeas, like you recommend.
    I also unexpectedly bought a forsythia mikador and lacecap light-o-day hydrangea I didn't really needed😂
    But they look good in the area where I put up my rose arch that same Friday.
    I will let a native dog rose grow over the arch and continuing on the house wall, since they can grow up to 6 metres in length👍🏻
    I'm editing a lot of upcoming videos for my channel, including putting up the rose arch👌🏻🌹

      Hi Titia, double row of native hedging sounds really interesting- I’ll look forward to see what plants you choose.
      Ha, ha - everyone needs a lacecap light-o-day hydrangea! Your plants will love the fresh compost you’ve bought - keep it well watered and you’ll be amazed at how quickly they’ll settle in.
      I’ll check out your new videos. 🌻

      @@paultsworld thank you, Paul. I would appreciate that🙂
      I took hawthorn, blackthorn, elderberry and flowering current cuttings last fall/winter. I will use them for the hedging.
      When you enter the garden, there is a row of small non-native trees (aside from one elderberry).
      And I like to replace the non-native ones over time with the native ones and planting shrubs like the light-o-day or bridal wreath in front of it.
      It will be so useful for my new bird friends and pretty to look at😀🥰❤️

    Spirea is absolutely stunning . Tropical plants are hardy in your location, is sign of changing climate.
    @2:10 -Euonymous looks great in this natural shape. How big does it grow and can it be left unprunned ? I have a same one in same shape and I love it.

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  Рік тому +1

      The tropicals that can’t take any frost wouldn’t survive but it appears many can manage growing from their roots - I’m testing to see what can.
      I think the euonymus can grow very large - as you say I tend to leave it and only take off growth that’s getting untidy - or is reverting to green. They can climb other plants and get quite tall. I find if you prune it it produces lots of thick growth and new leaves which also looks nice.

    Thank you for this very enjoyable video. I would hedge my bets if leaving some marginally hardy plants outside. If your Brugmansia is like my white Angel’s Trumpet you can cut off a few branches and stick them in a jar of water (change it occasionally) and they will root over the winter. Just in case. I like your Persicarias which are pretty impossible to get in USA. I especially like thatDragon one! I think it’s because they are in the same genus with Japanese Knotweed and so e other thugs so everybody just goes, “Nope!”

    Hi Paul I think I’m following you too closely if I’m honest as my garden is turning into a replica of your garden but on a much smaller scale. I bought a Weigela Bristol Ruby last year as a small plant and I’ve put it in my new allotment. Good afternoon, I don’t do anything special with the weigela but it has been there for quite a few years. I have fed it a bit - mostly because of the plants around it. When I feed I just use the normal things such as chicken pellets or bone meal.
